Strange marks on ebony/wood back Moto X - Moto X Q&A

Hi. Just wanted to see if this is a normal occurrence for the Moto X wood back, or if it's something I should ask about since I'm still in my 2 week trial period.
I ordered an ebony-backed Moto X, and I am seeing some irregularities in what looks like the coating on the wood. I thought it might just be dirt, but it won't wipe off with water.
Is it just normal wear? If it's wear, I would hope eventually the entire back panel would look more consistent.

Hi, I had the same ebony phone and I can tell you from experience that mark is from putting the phone in a TPU case. I also tried to rub it off using water and LCD screen cleaner and it would not go away. I returned it because of my OCD.

[Q] Anyone notice scuffing on plastic "bezel"?

I bought a black Moto X and have been very very light with the phone, but I've already noticed "scuffing" on the plastic bezel around the display. I wonder if it is just my device or if anyone else has noticed it. I don't put my device screen down, and the plastic backing is absolutely fine.

no one else has the phone
I would have thought some reviewers would have mentioned it, haven't seen one say it yet. Curious indeed!
I have the same issue. Mine even had all kinds of loose plastic chips inside the packaging, like the kinds that fly around when trimming plastic in a factory. To top it off the vacuum sealed plastic on the box was very loose. To backup my claims, the first unit that they pulled out for me, wouldn't turn off almost like the power button was permanently pressed down. Weird. Had to exchange it. Looks like motorola might have some manufacturing issues to address.
Scuff Marks
I have this issue as well. After a couple times putting it in my pocket I had dull scuff marks on the bezel. Wonder if I can buff it out somehow? Come on Motorola!

Talk about scuffs and dents, buy a metal HTC phone and see what it looks like in 3 months, I had a HTC EVO 3D in black, the exterior is metal with the cheapest black paint job , not powder coated but painted and within 3 months the paint started to chip off exposing the bare metal .

Known defects

I've searched the web daily to see if any defects arise but I've seen only one.
Battery life depleting rapidly
Besides that defect. What are other defects I should look out for that you have seen, heard of, or have/had with your moto x.
Also I've heard that the plastic around the screen grabs TONS of scratches because its glossy plastic(right?). One said after a month receiving a notable amount. Another zero to hardly any after a month.
I just want to know what to look out for when I get it. I'm gonna grab one when the Moto Maker is available for Verizon. I own the Galaxy Nexus and I know there are GNex vets in here that know the issues and defects of the Gnex. I have several HORRIBLE defects with my nexus and I wanna make sure I know what to look for when I get my X.
I am stock rooted and have had absolutely ZERO issues. Not a single random reboot, no battery drain, nothing. Google and Motorola took their time with this phone and it shows. No idea what people are doing to their phones to cause some of these issues. As far as the corners and edge of the screen scratching, I haven't seen anyone else mention that, and mine has been out of a case the majority of the time I have had the phone. The edge of the screen is not plastic. One big advantage to this phone is the fact that the Gorilla Glass 2 that is equipped with wraps around the device.
Its GLASS???? How did I not know! I follow this device closely on XDA and the Web.

A moto x. You can see quite clearly with the white face that it's just a normal pane of Glass that does not wrap around anything. And the right edge of mine where the glass meets the plastic is not set right and you can pull the plastic bezel to the side

I'd be willing to bet money it doesn't. On the left side of my screen you can't detect any joint where the plastic and glass meet. Multiple web sites have also confirmed that it's not the "magic glass" that was first reported but a very well put together phone. Look up the Ifixit tear down

It's definitely plastic around the edge. I love my moto x... but I'm really disappointed the sides have gotten scratched.
The scratches aren't huge issue, but I'm sad because it's the snap case that I purchased from Motorola that's caused them. The way the case snaps into place, there's actually a small gap where dirt/sand/whatever can get stuck inbetween the phone and the case. And if you take your phone out of the case while there's something there.... it will definitely leave a mark.
Another issue I've noticed is that on the back near the dimple, there's a small section my case doesn't cover.. and there's some discoloration going on there. It looks like the plastic has been absorbing finger oil and it now has a bit of a glossy sheen that won't come off.
Got a moto X from ebay with a vibration motor that rattles too much, it actually makes noise when typing. My other Moto X's vibration felt normal. I believe i've read somewhere that the Moto X's vibration motor is attached in some way that's not optimal, and from experience some Moto Xs are better than others at vibrating.
Other gripes with my Moto X:
-Activate Notifications: I keep getting the flashing clock while driving (Which should only happen when you pick up the phone.) It makes me think there's a new notification, when there actually isn't. Quite annoying while driving actually. (I keep it on my lap)
-Battery seemed better on my other Moto X.
-Headphone output seems a bit low. Higher than my nexus 4 and lower than my GS3.
Of course nearly everything else is delightful about this phone. Specially the screen and the deep blacks which complement a black-front nicely. Also surprisingly good accuracy with touchless controls.
Thank you guys for your answers. I've also seen around here lint/dirt can be stuck underneath the lens of the camera right out of the box.

I know what it is FYI. It's just "stronger" glass. I've read up on how they're made.

dropped my first moto four days after getting it. so they gave me another one.
first phone was perfect. second phone.... hollowish vibrating motor and like you... i think my battery isnt as good. i still get a day plus. but my first one was getting 36 hours plus. i dunno what carrier you are one. but i am contributing the worsened battery life to the update.
Adding this to the list of issues:

Um battery life is great on this phone... People that have bad battery life probably have something running constantly in the background.

Popping noise from back cover

Has anyone else noticed a popping/snapping noise from the lower back cover of the phone? To me it sounds like the glue that holds the back cover on is not always touching the back, so if you push part of the back towards the screen it sticks to the glue, and then comes unglued later with a "pop" sound.
Yes I have noticed this, and this came to my attention from other forum members talking about it so we are not alone

Ok, so it's not just a one-off manufacturing error. I'm trying to decide if it's worth trying to get fixed, after all it doesn't affect structural integrity or anything.
I noticed the same popping noise when I got my Moto X. Don't notice it now that it is in a case.

makes sense with my glue theory, the case prevents the back from compressing so it doesn't touch the glue. Alternatively the case keeps it always compressed so it doesn't pop later.
I just got a Moto X and have the same issue. What provider do you guys have? How common is it?
Mine too Verizon
Sent from my XT1060 using xda app-developers app
Mine does this too, right where the carrier branding would go.
What kind of backs do you guys have?
I have a white woven back on a GSM Dev Edition. My friends turquoise back and says her's doesn't do this. It might have to do with material used to make your back.
should I be concerned I didnt get the extended warranty.. I am within my 14 days with vzw.. should I exchange it?
Np, they all do this, just the design there's some air there but sticky tap on the back panel so when you push it down the tape sticks then let's go and that's what you're hearing

Thinking of buying it... need advice!

Hi guys!
I am in need of advice from you owners of the phone.
At the moment i have a galaxy nexus, and it kind of has done its job, so i was thinking of changing it with the moto X 2014.
My priorities are materials, dimensions and price. That's what brought me here.
The main reason i'm in doubt is because i've found an online website selling the white version, bamboo back, at 349 euros, which is a great price; but i'm more into the black front, which can be found on other websites, with the plastic back, at 430ish euros.
The question is: bamboo and lower price or plastic and higher price? Is the bamboo back really worth it? How does the plastic feel?
I've seen as many video reviews as can be found. Some say the bamboo feels fantastic, some say it looks like a sticker and gets easily scratched. What do you guys think?
On the other hand the plastic is said to have a good feel and not look like cheap plastic at all.
What is your opinion on this?
What's your opinion of the phone after a while using it? Would you reccomend it?
Thanks in advance, have a good day everyone ^^
check if both are the same capacity i.e 16 GB vs 32 GB has a considerable price differnece.
A lot of people have complained about the wood peeling off. It looks nice, but I have serious doubts about its durability. The soft touch plastic actually has a great feel to it, but aside from black I don't know what other colors have the soft touch. My first one was soft touch black but I exchanged it for black leather, which I absolutely love.
As far as my overall opinion of the phone goes- it's amazing. I've tried all the other flagship phones and there is no doubt in my mind that the X is the best smartphone on the market right now. Get it, you won't be disappointed.

Thanks a lot for your answer, it really helped a lot. Too bad moto maker is only available in America, anyway the black front black back looks really elegant
X 2014
I just purchased the Moto X 2014 Pure Edition (64gb). I'm coming from a Samsung Galaxy S4 GPE which boasts a bigger, removable battery and removable storage. What drew me to this phone was the built in motorola software and the "OK Google" functionality. Overall I'm finding the battery to be a little lack luster; it doesn't hold up like my S4. However, the processor is quick and snappy, and the device overall has, in my opinion, a nice fit and finish. I purchased the black back with the dark silver accents. The phone has a nice weight, and it doesn't feel like it will fly out of my small hands like some lighter phones do. The metal on the rim and the black standard back are also both pleasing to the touch. The back plastic is almost soft to the touch; it isn't your standard shiny plastic. My fiancé has the previous generation Moto X with the dark wood back; one important thing to keep in mind, you're probably going to have this in a case to protect it. This renders the wood completely pointless in my opinion, even with a clear backed case. The OS takes up a fair amount of space, and I would recommend getting the most storage you can afford given that you can't expand it down the road. This phone, unlike the previous model, does not feel cheap in any way. I would easily group it in with S4-S5 quality.
I would encourage you to consider a phone with a bigger battery if you plan to fuss with it regularly throughout your day, or if you don't have a desk job where you can just leave it plugged in. But, otherwise, it's a great little phone with superb software, and I am fairly pleased with it thus far.
Here's my take.... I too had a Galaxy Nexus and then switch to the 2013 Moto X Developer Edition. Loved the Nexus with Paranoid Android. Loved the '13 X and its similar size.
Then I broke my '13 X and got upgraded to the "14 X Pure Edition with a Bamboo back. I have to say that it looks and feels really good. Of course its going into a case, but a clear TPU one. Just got the replacement in today and unlocking the boot loader tonight.
I'd say its a pretty decent phone if you don't mind the on screen buttons. I'm sure you mind coming from a Nexus. By the way, the radio in this phone is way better than Galaxy S4 that I previously owned too.

Yep, that was my first one, it was gorgeous. The only reason why I swapped it for a leather one was because my buddy was twisting my arm.
I have a white bamboo and a base model black on black. I have had no issues with the bamboo peeling or scratching. I'm actually on my 3rd bamboo phone because I had a clumsy week and broke a couple screens. none of them had peeling issues. I like the bamboo and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I love it. the black plastic one is scratched and marred on the back already and IMO is not as scratch resistant as the wood. I left my real camera at work, but I will post pics tomorrow so you can see what I mean.
I have a bamboo one with a black front and love it. I briefly had an S5 but got bored of it as it was to similar to my old phone (S3) so sent it back. The Moto X is a real head turner with the bamboo back and so far I've had no issues with it peeling or scratching and don't use a case.
Regarding the battery I do charge the phone every night but that seems pretty standard with smart phones. Also I've noticed someone at my work who has a HTC M8 and she is charging hers at least once every day, I never need to do this.
Plus also you can get a turbo charger for the moto x which charges the phone ridiculously fast, so its win, win.

i understand the fear of peeling, but i don't know why wood gets such a bad wrap. if plastic was so tough we'd make houses out of it, but we use wood for a good reason, from the framing to the floor. i make signs for a living. same thing. people come in here not wanting wood because they think it won't last. Outdoors, the MDO plywood signs i make last about 15 years before they even start to show their age. Outdoor plastic signs i make get brittle, crack, warp, and discolor after about two. What i'm saying seems consistent with this picture of two 5 month old phones

That comparison doesn't really work. The wood on the x is veneer, and it's the adhesive that's failing. If it was a thick piece of wood, I wouldn't question its durability, but it is super thin, probably around .5mm. No house is built from wood that thin.

Matt side frame coating chips too easy?

Hi people!
I got my Pixel 4 XL two weeks ago, basically the phone lives in my pocket nothing beside it. Never dropped or hit it anywhere. This morning I noticed a very small chip on the matt side frame on the top right corner. It is not a big chip, but I can see the bare metal under it. It is really annoying because as I mentioned I was really careful with the phone, I can't imagine what would have happened if I dropped it.
Is it normal? Anyone experienced the same issue?

I think someone else has a thread of a similar situation. I swap between 3 different cases all the time (One case is pretty tight) and my sides are just fine.
Sent from my Pixel 4 XL using Tapatalk
Yes mine has Matt paint coming off has been in case since day 1 took case off and the two bottom corners have worn off not happy at all and never once dropped my phone and the case I used is ringke case now I'm using Incipio case
I have multiple cases and swap multiple times a week and have no issues. Ranging from the otterbox to the Google fabric case.
Thanks for the input guys,
The issue is that I don't even use any case. So it is not like the case is too tight and ripping the coating off. I don't have a case on it because I hate the bulk. I got a 2 years old Pixel 2 with only a dbrand skin on the back, never had a case on it. I just removed the skin when I got my 4XL and basically the phone is in pristine condition. It just annoys me that my P4XL shows wear in few weeks.
Basically it got damaged in my pockets somehow, which is weird because I always make sure I don't have any debris in it and I never put anything else in my pocket.
Also, I have never dropped it. Anyway, it seems like I need to get a rubber case or something if I don't want the whole thing to come off by the end of this year.

Get a thin case and I would recommend contacting support and see if they would do a RMA for you. Doesn't hurt to try before they start giving out refurbished replacements.
