Yes, I've looked but I could not find it. I could only find out how you can upgrade a rooted phone but then, all your apps and data, and sometimes a root will be removed.

perhaps you may not have used the right key words in your search
look for backup data and apps
that will show you how to backup your apps and data
First, what firmware have you got now and what do you want to update it to?
I guess you still want stock firmware otherwise you wouldn't care about loosing root.
This phone is so easy to root that there's nothing to even think about.
Do these Samsung firmwares really factory reset by itself? I can't remember but I think not.
If so, I wonder how Samsung can have any customers left if their phones gets wiped with every update ?
Sure its best to make a backup just in case, but its also very simple to restore it back to your new firmware in case of userdata getting wiped. Just remember to back up to your external SD.

what model do you have?
for international gt-i8190 highest version of stock android is 4.1.2 so that is as good as it gets
samsung are not supporting firmware upgrades of this device higher than 4.1.2 android at this point
please note that there are some threads on the topic if you would like to have a read
i strongly recommend that you take the time to do some research before you start thinking about loading firmware to your phone
But where it really all about is that I want to be a developer so I can turn on USB debugging and that can not with my android version. It can only with android 4.2 and higher. So I want something simple that I lose nothing.

Bit of a no brainer, but one that I never really thought about, but how do I back up my Samsung Ace which is NOT rooted?
Bit scared of the thought of rooting at the moment for two reasons which are I may brick my toys and I may void my warranty. I'm not bothered about the warranty as its not as important as owning a brick.
I don't know a way to do what you ask. But owning a stock firmware that can be flashed trough Odin its like having a non rooted backup with stock recovery. The only other thing that may be different is carrier system apps which you can backup with titanium backup.
Also making a cwm recovery backup of your original rom is OK cuz you can always open the resulting .img files and take whatever you want to put it in system or data partitions with adb push. You can push everything except the superuser app and binaries and you're good to go.
Consider that if you actually brick your phone, a backup won't do any good because you can't restore it. If you can restore a backup, then your phone isn't really bricked is it?
ace is practically near impossible to brick.
unless u do something stupid that others already warned about like using rom manager, you're literally safe.
mine got bricked, but thats after thousands of time flashing anything day and night (i'm compiling kernel, thus need to test it by flashing after each compile). guess it couldnt take the beating any longer.
but for normal user, root is practically safe. i'd say go ahead and root it.

Its been well over a year since I first considered rooting my phone.
I have now come to the sad conclusion that I do not have enough memory on the phone for it to function normally and I now want to put everything onto an SD card to free up space on the phone.
So, what tutorials can I use to get a Samsung Ace S5830 with Gingerbread version 2.3.3
My latest firmware is PDA:KPY / PHONE:KPA / CSC:KP1 (XEU)
An idiot guide would be most appreciated as I need to do this ASAP. At the moment I only have enough internal memory to install one or two apps before I get the dredded Memory full pig icon.

when you root your phone you keep it clean, no need to wipe data/factory reset you need to flash CWM and do you first backup but check that your phone's model is GT-s5830 first and that you are runnig Gingerbread android version (2.3.x) please

I am actually trying to update my firmware version through kies, while it keeps telling me that i need 3000 mb. I dunno wat to do. am stuck here. I thought rooting wil help me here.

rooting your device basically means that you now have access to modify your "system" files. e.g. you can now uninstall any system app that you don't like, with a software like es file explorer. There are also tons of useful apps in the market which require your phone to be rooted in order to work properly. Rooting also has other benefits but if you are looking to update your firmware to the latest stock rom, i suggest you look into this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1822109 and follow the instructions. Did you flash a custom kernel to root your phone?kies doesn't recognise phones with custom roms and kernels...that is maybe the reason why it is showing weird things (3 GB for an update? Weird...)...and there's another explaination...kies requires you to free some internal memory for the update (let me guess, your phone has less than 300 MB left?) if you want to update your software, use ODIN instead and flash one...google about it...it's much faster and stable...
By rooting your phone, means you gained superuser access...you can now modify system files...unlike iphone, rooting is not like jailbreaking...you can install apks without rooting but you must jailbreak to install ipas...next time, do some research first before voiding your warranty...

Hello,
After coming back from holiday, my phone suddenly stopped recognising my SIM. It see's a SIM so I no longer get an (Insert SIM Message) but I can't do anything with the sim. This is what I see.
Due to this problem I tried resetting my phone to no avail, I then stumbled upon this. I thought that this was fantastic, I could fix it without going to a store or whatever.
On my quest to root my phone for the first time ever I used a guide from the reliable How-To-Geek. I did everything the guide asked me to but unfortunately my adventure came to a halt when 'SuperOneClick' kept freezing when reaching step 7.
I have never rooted my phone so I really don't know where to begin, your help would be greatly, greatly appreciated! :good:
P.S (I have never rooted or ROM'd this phone before?

I am slightly confused by the terms used. As you can see from my thread, I initially tried using SuperOneClick which seemed simple as it just involved installing apps on my computer and clicking 'Root'.
Currently on my phone, I don't have to backup anything as I just reset it a couple of days ago, it has its stock rom (I believe that's what it is called) Would I have to install a custom ROM or something to root my phone?
Lastly, is this the thread you are talking about?

Make sure to find the right one for YOUR ROM. Read the instructions carefully. No you don't need a custom ROM.
Easiest way to to flash it from stock recovery with the philz file on your external SD card if u have one

In your system settings you will go yo about phone. Match the version there to the Phil version.
I still don't get why you are rooting to fix this...
I am not sure who told you rooting would fix this...
You went on vacation and came back and the sim didn't work
Did you try removing the sim and reseating it in the phone?

Look at the original post. A user had the same problem and his solution was Titanium Backup Pro, he used it to clear user cache or something - this made the SIM work again.
I've taken out the SIM and everything, it works on other phones, just not mine

Really man you MUST read the instructions in the philz thread its very clear.
Well you can try all that, I personally if it were my device would flash philz (safe kernel), boot to recovery, and just do a factory reset and see if it works... but I would only do this AFTER backing up my EFS using Ktool....

Just a side-note: regarding your links, etc that you post in the OP - I won't read those. I don't think other reputable members here will either. No offense please. I only trust sources on XDA, not random websites. If its not on xda, as far as I'm concerned, it is either incorrect or doesn't exist (i will act blind to it).
The Philz kernel for the Note is easy to find via google. Look either direct for the kernel or look for a PA installation guide and skip the odin option.

There is only one root account on a galaxy note, so it is the one-and-only-best.
If you want to root your device read Dr. Ketan's thread (search for it, good excercise for your brain).
And: best rom xyz posts or threads are against XDA rules.
Just read it: your best Rom thread yesterday was closed. Repeating this won't help...
I am returning my phone back to stock so I can trade it in. I found a few threads on here that have ways to unroot but some seem questionable. Can anyone point me in the right direction to unroot an official Kit Kat updated device?

Assuming you have supersu, uninstall all of your apps that have root access (for safestrap, busybox, etc make sure to uninstall the in-app stuff first), i would reboot here but that may not be necessary...then open up supersu and choose "full unroot". Then factory reset and double check status is official ☺
If you get a custom screen after that try rerooting then full unroot with supersu again
Edit: I stand corrected - flashing NC2 with Odin is easiest

Yea @440bro 's suggestion is way easier since Odin removes all of that! unroot with SuperSU does work but it's a long way around for just returning to stock

Did you backup stock rom before you flashed the custom rom in safestrap? if yes, reflash your backup in safestrap then the steps in post #2 should work. If no, I'm really not sure how going through that unroot process with SuperSU while still on a custom rom would work out...Odin is much easier and more reliable so if there's any way you can get to a PC you might want to go that route.
Also if you're selling online you might find some people who do want to buy a rooted Note 3...I sold a phone on swappa a few months ago and there were people looking specifically for rooted phones. The 'cartoon thing' is safestrap and is exactly what you want to see when you turn on a rooted AT&T Note 3

Thanks for your feel good message...made my day. I thought I backed up stock rom however being an obviously root virgin...When I went to factory reset, everything was gone except for my ugly cartoony friend. Luckily I am able to read in small doses so I was able to do whatever it was I did to get her running factory...still rooted and unlocked. When you mentioned that people on swappa might be interested in a rooted device WITH my lonely friend at startup? I felt all fuzzy. I will post an ad on swappa later today in your honor my mysterious phoneguardian angel. Thanks again.

Hello Everyone!
Quick (stupid) question. How would one root the Samsung Galaxy S6 (Flat, T-Mobile Variant) running Android 6.0.1 (Stock)? Last night (As of this post) I've tried installing TWRP but ended in a bootloop at the Samsung logo, and (Thankfully) Smart Switch saved my ass. At this point, tripping KNOX isn't of my concern, as my phone's warranty has expired. Attached is my phone's Model, Build, etc.
Any help is appreciated.

Looking through all the builds, I don't see my build number. The closest one to mine (which is MMB29K.G920TUVU4EPF1), is MMB29K.G920TUVU3EPD1. Now, I would use this, but I don't want a 600$ brick, so unless it's compatible with my build, I'm gonna have to wait.

Thanks for the reply. Hmm...last time I flashed TWRP on my phone, It got stuck on the "Samsung Galaxy" logo, stayed there no matter what, thankfully I was able to use "Emergency Firmware Reset." I've been snooping around forms, and some people state to, "UNCHECK AUTO REBOOT, when finished installing, reboot manually." Of course, I'm hesitant to try that, after all Smart Switch only backs up photos, videos, apps, etc, but not the actual Android operating system.
I'm gonna do a back up of what I can and try EncryptedCurse's suggestion. Wish me luck!

Did as instructed, still didn't work, freezes and shuts down at the Samsung Logo. Doing a Emergency Device Initialization now, and then restoring my stuff. Thanks anyway, I knew I shouldn't have updated to 6.0... :sigh:

From what I've tried, no. I had a feeling this would happen as soon as I upgraded.
On a side note, is anyone developing a kernel for build MMB29K.G920TUVU4EPF1? Twisted Six's kernel only goes up to EPD1...
