Hello everyone, as the title suggests if only Sammy released JB for my phone. I love the look and feel of it on the S3 but just dont like the phone, its too big and bulky IMHO. I am eagerly waiting for the S4.
Anyway, the reason for the post, i have been using CM10 on my I9000 for the last couple of weeks, i actually love it ands it actually pretty stable but and its a BIG BUT the battery drain finally killed the last remnants of patience i had with it. 12-15hrs on one battery charge is just not satisfactory.....so ive gone back to stock GB 2.3.6 and already the battery life has dramatically increased. Is this a firmware issue or poor hardware I wonder.
In anycase i would like JB back on this phone but I would like at least the same battery performance as GB, so my question really is about which JB ROM i could use?
Anyone got any ideas, recommendations or rom-avoidance advice? Anything would be helpful and much appreciated.

Use a different modem, and try a tweakable kernel like Semaphore. Also install betterbatterystats. That will tell you what's keeping your phone awake. I get two days out of my worn out two year old battery on the latest CM10 with low to medium use. Back on ICS, before I changed the modem, a RILJ wakelock would keep it awake pretty much all the time and I had about 12-15 hours of battery life. I'd rather Samsung stay as far away from software development as possible because nothing they have ever done in that department has been even remotely usable.
I also wish Samsung would release official JB for the I9000, but I'm afraid it's never gonna happen. They have left the I9000 behind it seems, and I think Gingerbread 2.3.6 was the last ever official update. It's custom ROM's from now on for the Galaxy S.

1. are you suggesting you can change the modem - how on earth do you do that??
2. ive heard the word Kernel being used but actually dont know what one is or what it does. complete novice to all this im afraid - i know about ROMs (for JB) like Cyanogen CM10, Slimbean and HellyBean etc etc, and have actually heard of this Semaphore but not actually knowing what it is!
Can you explain what this all means at all ?
btw - i get your point about Samsung especially on thier own non-andriod phones. to be fair the stock roms work flawlessly on my i9000 and the UI progression from Eclair to GB is staggering...even if it is cloaked as Andriod development....still looks and feels better than any Iphone. Thats what i meant by i wish Samsung would of developed ICS and JB for the I9000.
What helps in terms of battery life CM roms is:
-using 2d as much as possible and 3d only when needed (browsing, downloading apps etc). Problem is that 2g mode will not allow you to use data and make phone calls at the same time
-disable location services or at least gps when not used
-freeze/remove apps you are not using (stock email, talk, gmaps are battery drainers)
-disable CM built in app&data backup and use TB instead
-use lowest acceptable screen brightness
-buy a brand new battery

Hmmmm well all that seems like a gr8 idea but then what would be the point of flashing CM or any JB custom rom if i werent going to be able to use the features within it, like you would an S3 ??!!!! Kinda seems pointless to me... At the end of the day JB is the latest and greatest version, youd want to use and explore its capabilites as much as you can, without comprimising hardware performance..
Surely there must be a non battery draining and stable version of JB out there.......:crying:

Totally agree with you. These are just workarounds that make you able to survive a day without recharging but at the same time limit user's satisfaction from owning a multifunctional device (eg no location and gps = no Google now). I'm switching to SGS2 that will get official jb shortly so will see if it gets better battery life but I do not expect miracles. The only hope in Google and Motorola cooperation. Motorola's battery + updates from Google must make a great combo

Before anything else, please install CM10.1 (http://get.cm/?device=galaxysmtd), CPU Spy (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bvalosek.cpuspy) and BetterBatteryStats. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809)
Now in BetterBatteryStats, look at the "partial wakelocks" near the end of a day's charge and drain cycle. This will tell you what was keeping your phone awake. My money is on RILJ being at the top of the list and active for several hours. If that is the case, you need to change your modem. Check CPU Spy as well to see how much time your phone spends sleeping when it's supposed to.
Modems
The "modem" is basically like a driver file for the phone's radios and such. (Cell radio, WiFi, GPS, etc) It tells the phone how to use those things. So some modems are less efficient or not tuned as well for your specific carrier.
http://soggycashew.weebly.com/i9000-modems.html - Here is a collection of modems packaged in Clockwork Mod zip files. If you were able to install CM10, I'm sure you know how to install them.
Go to the "i9000_release_dates.txt" file and try the most recent one. If you have an i9000M which supports the 850MHz band, only use the 850MHz-capable modems. Likewise, if you have a regular i9000, don't use those. Testing may take at least day or so each. If you're still seeing a RILJ wakelock time more than about 20 minutes a day, try the next latest one.
Kernels
The "Kernel" is sort of like the BIOS in a PC. It starts up first then Android runs on top of it. Android communicates with the kernel, and then the kernel communicates with your phone's hardware. It runs the screen, sound chip, vibrator, radios, everything. Some kernels are basic and only include what they need to run the phone normally (like the stock Cyanogenmod kernel) and some are made to let you change all sorts of settings of how they operate.
I highly recommend Semaphore JB for CM10.1

For improved power savings, use the app to turn on Deep Idle, make sure WiFi PM FAST is disabled, and you may as well turn on fast charge. (no power saving, but a shorter charge time is nice)
Android
Now this stuff is pretty simple, but it can be overlooked. Make sure to turn off apps that auto-update or at least lower their update frequency as much as possible. These are brutal for battery life. With your Google account, only enable sync for things you NEED to have updated automatically. Like Gmail and Chrome. Things like Contacts and Calendar you can update manually whenever you want but you probably don't need it constantly ready to sync. You can also do things like lower the screen brightness and turn off the fancy stuff, but I don't bother. 100% screen brightness all the time for me. I'd rather have a good experience than another couple minutes of battery.
I really hope this all helps and you can get on the latest ROM without the crippling battery drain these phones sometimes get. And you have the right idea about keeping all the effects and things on. Everything's active when the screen is on anyway, so battery savings will be negligible. Good luck!
All operating systems have a kernel, Windows, OS-X, Linux, whatever, it's just that in a closed system like Windows no-one knows its specifics or can do anything to it, whereas Linux's can be.
(Take a look at your screen when turning on your phone, the kernel image is not the first you see)

They should do that as soon as possible as the JB thing means a great progress in Android development. The new OS is really faster, covers alot of minuses from the previous versions and Samsung, being so good in the last few years they should stay in touch with new, good ROMs if they dont want to begin to have Google as their second conquerent.

Apple just stops updating devices for no better reason than they want to force upgrades, it's not like the old devices wouldn't work. Like what Samsung did here, except at least porting Android over would take a little bit of work/time. Still no better though. Apple also holds "features" back from older devices purely to market something new on their otherwise indistinguishable upgrade. (like Siri)
Nobody, including Apple, should follow Apple's example. I think Samsung should stop bothering with bastardizing Android and just hand the drivers over to the devs here, because they actually make software people actually want to use, and enjoy using.

A friend of mine gives me the possibility to trade my galaxy nexus for his galaly note, I like the display and the s pen but I would lost the "nexus" support...I can't decide,what would you do?
p.s. with the galaxy nexus i can get 3h 30min of screen on,what about note?
@BurningKoala I had GNexus for some time (app developing) and it's a great phone, but I'm glad I chose the Note over it.
Disadvantages are SO & Hardware optimization (Note's fast and reliable but nothing rivals Nexus) and, maybe, size. If you are considering the Note, size might not be a problem to you. The huge screen is also it's main advantage; for navigation or reading it's just a BIG jump. I really enjoy it. There's a reason why new phones are getting near the Note's screen size...
About battery, it's not as good as the Note II but comparable to that of the GNexus. You'll get trough the day with a lot of use without problems.

You will feel the difference in smoothness if you intend to keep it stock. But coming from a nexus i don't think you will have any problems with CM or AOSP roms, wich are much faster than Samsung Touchwiz.

Stay with the Nexus - the support from Samsung on the Note is terrible. The recent Jelly Bean update to the Note is a disaster, it is VERY slow. Laggy everywhere, ugly, unintuitive compared to AOSP.
Want to use the S-pen? Use the S-Note app which lags like hell. When you draw with it then it jumps, also the s-pen is not calibrated properly (you can get a payed app to calibrate it properly)
Want to phone someone? Press the phone icon on your launcher, wait 5s, then get a laggy animation and then wait another 5s for the phone to load.
Want to perform a factory reset on ICS? Do so and after that you will brick your phone. If you flash a kernel then there is a possibility you will loose your guarantee.
Want to get TW 4.2.2? Forget about it, it won't happen.
Want AOSP on it? Sure we have it. Some very good ROM's... it's a shame that Samsung hasn't released the exynos source code EVEN THOUGH they said they would by the end of of 2012. This means many developers are leaving the exynos based devices and we won't get as much support on new android versions. Also we have a broken hwcomposer meaning it has not got projet butter. And you can certainly see this.
Want to watch a movie on your phone? Great! watch how all yopur greys are replaced with pitch black, imagine what a horror movie looks like on our screen now. That is what the balck clipping/black crush issue is with it.
Anything good about the phone? Well... It has a nice screen size, that's it in my eyes.

Wow... seems like we have two completely different phones.
I can't agree with 80% of what you say. Sadly the emmc brick bug is there, and there will never be enough soft&hw support from Samsung to get us all pleased, but hey...
- JB runs GREAT on this phone, the failure is the update process which ruins everything. Do a clean one and is as fast and estable as it should.
- No lag in phone app. 1 or 2 secs, maybe? Surely NOT 5 seconds. Again: JB clean installation?
- Not liking S-Note? Well, S-pen utility sure doesn't end there. Have 5 drawing apps which I just can't imagine myself using them without the S-Pen (calibrated, by the way, with simple rooting and easy tweaking).
- Black clipping problem, just for your information, is also present in the GNexus as it is in every pentile HD amoled screen. Maybe not as hard, but it is there. Check it for yourself.
- Assuming you want to live flashing new roms, you might get affected by the unreleasing of exynos source code. I never got affected by it, most surely will never be.
- And then, there comes the big screen: Gaming, browsing, typing, reading, showing pictures, watching videos... it is like half a tablet in your everyday life, which in terms of use to me changes EVERYTHING.
Don't get me wrong, you have all the right to be unhappy with any device in the world, but those words seemed like facts when they are not really that objective. As you can see, I didn't say Note was better than GNexus: I just offered my perspective, which is a really pleasant one.

Trust me, I wouldn't be too surprised if I has flashed over 300 times on my phone. Maybe even 500. I know how to perform a full wipe and proper install, also I NEVER have a bloated device. i try to keep as little apps as possible (usually about 15 user apps, nearly all from google). What did I realise after about 3 days of use? The phone got very slow and laggy. Not even restarts helped.

Clear the phone out of the memory, then you will see how slow it is. With me it is usually not in memory because I don't use it that much.
Certainly 5s after a clean install, add another 5s after you have installed a couple of apps.

Although rooting is very easy on this phone, we should have had an already calibrated S-pen. As for alternative apps then yes, they do work. My favourite is Papyrus. However the samsung apps are real memory and CPU hoggers. When I was making my own ROM (Bare Bean) then the S-apps probably took up at least 150Mb... and I ask, on what? Alternative apps from google play take up 10x less space offering better functionality and speed.

Yes, the screen is nice. I must admit that... however that is one of the few things Samsung couldn't break after time with software updates.
I don't know, so many flashing overwhelms me. But I'm in Philz rooted stock spanish 4.1.2 LSZ, without removing any bloatware or anything touched (only rooted to calibrate s-pen and opened multiwindow to any app) and I can assure you my Note goes fluid, with no battery drains and there's no 5 second lag ANYWHERE. No restarting needed.
Sometimes, I get the feeling that removing too many - apparently harmless - stock rom apps and system files, causes unknown side effects. I really encourage rom developers, though - and I will not be praising Samsung work - BUT there's a lot of testing involved in stock roms that always make me more confident about them. In every phone I had, maximum estability and less problems have always been stock roms. Only talking about my own experience.
Good thing about Nexuses: Stock roms are always clean android, directly from OS developer.

I need some opinions here. I am coming from a Galaxy Wonder and I would like an upgrade. Have currently earmarked this device on top of my wishlist. I would like to know if this phone's tech is able to last around 2-3 years.
I'm particularly concerned about the 1 GB RAM this phone has. Is 1 GB enough?

1GB is more than enough in most phones, I've never had RAM management problems with this one.
However, my answer is a big NO.
Let me elaborate;
>Battery life
With proper greenifying, wakelock detecting, and no more than 2% per 12h of battery discharge, it has a decent battery life, but it seems the screen and the tegra 3 chip draw a lot of power from it. An extended battery does fix that though, but don't expect more than 3h of screentime on a normal usage day and 60-70% brightness, on a normal battery.
>Stock ROM
Looks great, feels great, kernel is easily updated (if you got the bootloader unlocked, flash another one), and then works great too. This phone, in my opinion is meant to be the LG Optimus G's younger brother. I've tried a lot of custom roms, but stock is the one that takes it away from me, after properly kdz flashed (without the bloat apps and stuff).
>Heating issues
10 mins of playing, well, pretty much anything that's 3D makes the phone really hot, no thermal throttling though, but don't expect this phone to last if you play an hour of gaming or more. Even Subway Surf kills the battery.
>Tegra 3 incompatibility/unoptimized apps
Most games are made with Adreno in mind, needless to say, Adreno is not better than the T3, just has more optimizations done for it. Also some apps aren't available via the Play Store on this phone, but that can vary depending on your region.
In my opinion, I'd always go with an SGS3, even with stock touch wiz and bloat, because
a) it gets proper software updates, unlike LG and all of their devices, not just the 4X HD.
b) better modding support/community
c) apparently heats up a lot less and lasts a lot more, that also means given its support there's bound to be more extended batteries, cases, stands, cradles, docks, and equipment for it.
The only thing the 4X HD has going for it is the price, I've paid 180e for it, and it was a huge step up from an even worse phone than yours (Samsung Galaxy Mini, s5570), but so far, I'm not a happy camper.
And the screen has a dead pixel on it, which irks me a lot.
Oh and apparently someone took the KDZ repository on that one site down. Dunno what the deal with that is too.

i would buy it, since it has good specs, and with custom roms you will have support for quite some time in future, i hope
1 GB of ram for me is enough, i don't play games on it, and after greenify hibernates apps, i got around 400 - 450 mb free, rom is latest vanir rom 4.3.1. dated 26.10.2013., and i am also using killjoy script
phone works really good, only little problem is with baseband_xmm_power wakelock, but devs are working on that and slow but surely this problem is getting reduced
camera is good for taking pictures, at least for me
i would only like that lock key is on the right side, current position is little awkward, but you get used to it

Hmm.... really now debating which to get 4X HD or S3 really a tough decision. I would want the 4X HD as I'm just a little bored of Samsung, but the S3 looks like will get better dev support. Its hard.

Would love to have one, but they're pretty expensive for me.
After some 'extensive' research, I have finally found the Xperia ZR. Maybe I might get it once the price drops (next year perhaps). Had earlier found the Optimus G to my liking, but I just dislike the glass back and front . Well, both have CM support which is a good thing for me

Battery life sucks, and it gets hot. It is a fricking smart frying pan. Seriously you can cook an egg on it. And it lags oh boy it lags like hell.
A good phone shouldn't need this much optimization to work better. I tried every CM, kernel etc but either you get good battery life and ****ty gaming performance or you get good performance and horrible battery life (like 2-3 hours max).
Get Optimus G or S3 but don't get this.

If you can get it for a good price and are willing to root and customize it, it's probably the best bang for a buck you can get at the moment.
The IPS screen is simply gorgeous. It's even more pleasing to the eye than my HTC One LCD screen if you ask me my honest opinion. Yes, it tends to drain the battery heavily, but with the right configuration you can get over 3 and even 4 hours of screen time easily. Oh, and I can't seem to get any scratches on it. Impressive since I don't use a case or any kind of screen protection and carry it around in my pocket all day. Only downside: fingerprints!
I like it's design and build quality. Even though it's all plastic, it neither feels nor looks (too) cheap. More important: all the buttons are in the right place for me. The ridged back provides some extra grip and looks quite OK (from a distance ) and so does the fake metal finish on the sides. It has to be the best fake metal in the business because it's still intact after dropping on my bathroom floor twice.
My biggest issue with this phone (besides being ignored by LG) has to be the sound quality. The silly speaker on the back is nearly useless when the phone is laying down. Picking it up doesn't improve anything.
I can't really comment on this phone's gaming capabilities. I don't really use my phone for that, sorry.
The only alternative I would consider in your position would be the Nexus 4. You should be able to pick it up for a fair price once Google releases the Nexus 5.

The main reason I went for this device was due to price. If price wouldn't matter, then the Galaxy S3 is a better device IMHO. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my device, but since I am using custom ROM's to have JB 4.2.2 there are some things you need to accept if you use custom ROM's (LG has not had the decency to release a JB 4.2.2 ROM
1- Camera: 3rd party cameras using flash and auto focus have issues on custom ROM's not based on stock.
2- BT can be temperamental if you are on custom ROM's
3- The f****** wakelocks that just came out of nowhere on my device are driving me nuts and killing my battery
4- Gaming is a mixed bag depending on the game.
5- External storage can be problematic if for example you are on a custom ROM and try to sync 2000+ songs (17GB's) with Media Monkey.
6- Audio: This really pisses me off... I listen A LOT to music on my devices, and I use different types of good headphones like AKG 450's or some Senheissers PX-200's and the audio chipset on this thing is pathetic, read the review about it on PhonesArena. Even more frustrating is the fact that with the AKG 450's, every time I connect the headphones, the line gets a permanent noise that was not there before. I tested the headphones extensively to make sure they were no broken, and they are fine on all other type of devices except my P880.
On a positive side, it is smooth on most of the ROM's I tried, I like how it looks, it's quite sturdy, GPS works like a charm (after a few tweaks of course); the speaker is ok, the camera when it works is ok; the community is good; the specs are good; All the good ROM's and stuff is relatively recent since it took a while for the bootloader to unlocked and not that many devs were on board. It looks way better than the SGS3 which BTW also have a TON of issues, which is why I went for the P880. Overall, the issues I listed will be sorted by the great devs that have this device, but LG is not doing itself any favours by not releasing updates more often.
So, yes, I do love it, but I will definitely update in less than 2 years to another device. No more LG for me, thank you very much until they learn to support their devices or I would just get a Nexus device.

I suggest you read all of the posts, make a nandroid backup and test. The one I ended installing was the agps.patch.google.build.nossl.v3.1 as suggested in the tread, and it did improve the GPS performance of my device.

Oh I already did this a while back and now use topNTP from the play store to install it lol. I asked because even with thid I can only get about 4-6 satellites in about 15 mins

lol this is disaster mine is just fine. the real disadvantage of this phone is only the low bitrate and framerate of the camera , but thats just how the lg made it. we cant change the hardware. besides that my phone works fine
So you are saying that:
- 3rd party cameras with autofocus and flash are working fine using a custom ROM as in CM based ROM? Which one please? so I can try it.
- No wakelocks at all? What kernel are you using and how do you use your phone? Gaming?, Internet (WIFI/3G) on all the time? FB/Tweeter/G+ on with auto updates all the time?
- Connecting to a car's BT to stream music works ALL the time?
- You can syncronize more than 10GB's in one go to the external microSD with no issues ALL the time?
You must be using either a stock ROM or one based on a stock ROM.
I also am thinking about buying this phone...
I own a Desire HD and i think that it would be a huge upgrade anyways.
The battery is not a problem i think:
1)U can root and install custom roms and it would be better as almost every phone
2)It's removable so you can always get a extended one
What i would like to ask you and have your opinion guys is it would be a bit wiser to get the L9 II instead of this one

this forum is for optimux 4x so i can only say about that one. the camera is bad. the bitrate and fps are low. so have in mind that and choose. about other phones u can check them in their forum. the reason is... because we dont own them all xD
Okey guys, please dont kill me for this question, I already know that im going straight to hell for this.
Since this week im a (sometimes) happy nexus 6 owner. Before N6 i had S5, S6 and Note 3. Now i cant get used to the stock rom, it is not made for me and im missing some Samsungcrap like making a folder inside app drawer, seeing on what type of data connection im online, having some lag and out of nowhere reboots, be able to modify haptic feedback sentivity, ****-up knox, be able to reset all recent used apps and other ****ty stuff.
Now i like the hardware of the N6 like the bigass display, stereo speakers, cpu und ze fast charging time.
Oh yeah, back to my question aka TL;DR:
Is there, somewhere in the forbidden dark place of the internet, a Samsung rom for the Nexus 6?

You should be able to find an installable Touchwiz launcher that will work on the Nexus 6. That's about is close as you'll get. Haptic feedback adjustment is a kernel feature AFAIK, I know most of the ones I have used had that available in Kernel Adiuter under misc controls.
Based on what you say you want, a Samsung Galaxy Note is for you. The Nexus 6 is designed for a pure experience --if that isn't what you want, you should sell it and buy what gives you the things you like about the Nexus (the size) with the interface of the Samsung.
With no disrespect, the Samsung experience is the complete antithesis of why people buy a Nexus. As people buy a Nexus to get away from Samsung's TouchWiz, HTC's Sense, and all of these other overlays, you're just not going to find that sort of thing.

The settings you said are more or less in cyanogenmod, and you can always use a TW launcher. If it's not enough, then you really should by a Samsung phone.
I was a Samsung user for years, I don't have anything really against TW, I never complained about the lag. When the warranty period was over for my Note 3, I've installed cyanogenmod, and never went back. Now I'm running my own pure AOSP rom, experimenting with ideas for modification.
So if you give it some time, you might even get to love the pure Android feeling. But some people can't and there's no shame in going back. The Note 4 n910F has basically the same hardware, the same resolution and almost as big a screen.

Just bought my new Huwaei p9 after 3 years of iPhone-use.
Can't say that I'm loving it yet; slow, too big for the average hand and some apps crashes.
Anyway - is there a way to tear all the software out and only run the stock android, as this might be the solution?
If you dont like it, replace it... most of shops in every normal country give you 5-7 days return policy...
Especially when you say that its too big for you... because how the hell you could buy phone without checking it first? -_- I seriously dont get people who whine about phone being small/big/have low res screen or have bad camera.... You live in damn world where every legit shop in the world give you possibility to check device before buying it, and they give you 7days return policy, if you are not happy with it... not to mention that you have damn internet to check info about phone... Jesus...
As far as being slow... you seriously didnt saw other flaghips devices... in terms of stability P9 actually beat even S7 that can lag even when you scroll menu... Its not king of performance and games like S7 but its definitely not slow in everyday usage. and if your device is slow... maybe its YOUR device is slow not model it self?
First what you always do after buying new phone is factory reset. that for most of time remove half of problems with device that people always find.
In terms of crashing apps.... normal people would rather blame app, not phone... especially when you didnt even mention what app crash.
EMUI on P9 is actually keept really clean in terms of amount of sideloaded apps, that most imortant: you can delete or turn off.
As for look and functions of EMIU, moving to stock app would be like moving to older car, that sooner or later you would need to fill with new parts, read: more side apps that extend its functions.
I dont know how many devices with android you had before, but stock android is not actually faster because its ripped from addons, its faster because specific phone was optimized to run it, trying to replace phone stock system with modified "clean" android can give you more troubles that you would think. There is just simple rule to having good working phone: take car of phone, and phone will take care of you. so keep it clean, keep it in good shape, and it will never give you any problems.
