[Q] Noob question about rooting instructions. - Galaxy S 4 Active Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have just ordered an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S4 Active SGH-I537 that I am going to have activated with MetroPCS. From the model number, this apparently was an AT&T phone. I have found rooting instructions that I don't completely understand yet. My question is, if this is flashed to MetroPCS, would I still use the instructions for an AT&T phone? If so, are there any accurate instructions that you can tell me about? A video would be perfect. Also, would I want to turn off automatic software updates? Sorry if these are stupid questions, but I am trying to learn.

The only thing you have to do is go to towelroot.com. The instructions you found are outdated.

So all I have to do it go to that site on the phone, download it, and run it, and that's it?

Yes it's an app, you just have to run the app, follow the instructions, afterwords install SuperSU from the play store. It couldn't be any easier.

There are several how to videos you can find. Look for one click root if you only want to root. It is about as easy as you get. It was created by TGA Gunman. Or you can search for the Clockworkmod update.zip and place that in the root of your SD card. Then you would be able to install a Rom without actually needing to root your phone first.
Also please make sure to post questions in the proper section. You will have the wolves after you for posting a general question in dev

[Q] Help me ROOT my Galaxy Note!

Hello,
After coming back from holiday, my phone suddenly stopped recognising my SIM. It see's a SIM so I no longer get an (Insert SIM Message) but I can't do anything with the sim. This is what I see.
Due to this problem I tried resetting my phone to no avail, I then stumbled upon this. I thought that this was fantastic, I could fix it without going to a store or whatever.
On my quest to root my phone for the first time ever I used a guide from the reliable How-To-Geek. I did everything the guide asked me to but unfortunately my adventure came to a halt when 'SuperOneClick' kept freezing when reaching step 7.
I have never rooted my phone so I really don't know where to begin, your help would be greatly, greatly appreciated! :good:
P.S (I have never rooted or ROM'd this phone before?
Here is what you can do
Which model is it ?? International or is it a locked network ??

Hello, do you mean for the SIM? It is the exact same as the screenshot of my settings in the first post. This is because I didn't manage to root it yesterday
The phone is completely fine apart from the SIM problem, that's why I want to root it
The __ONLY__ Current method you should be using to root is the philz kernel method. do not use any other method.
Please go to the philz thread.
PM me if you need more help later.

Thank you very much dude,
I am slightly confused by the terms used. As you can see from my thread, I initially tried using SuperOneClick which seemed simple as it just involved installing apps on my computer and clicking 'Root'.
Currently on my phone, I don't have to backup anything as I just reset it a couple of days ago, it has its stock rom (I believe that's what it is called) Would I have to install a custom ROM or something to root my phone?
Lastly, is this the thread you are talking about?
Thank you very much again dude

Super one click anything is either a lie and bull**** or simply not for this device
Yes that's the correct thread
Make sure to find the right one for YOUR ROM. Read the instructions carefully. No you don't need a custom ROM.
Easiest way to to flash it from stock recovery with the philz file on your external SD card if u have one

In your system settings you will go yo about phone. Match the version there to the Phil version.
I still don't get why you are rooting to fix this...
I am not sure who told you rooting would fix this...
You went on vacation and came back and the sim didn't work
Did you try removing the sim and reseating it in the phone?

Look at the original post. A user had the same problem and his solution was Titanium Backup Pro, he used it to clear user cache or something - this made the SIM work again.
I've taken out the SIM and everything, it works on other phones, just not mine
Lastly, about matching the version on my phone to the one on the thread:
Do I match the baseband version/Kernel Version or build number?

you match the kernel
Really man you MUST read the instructions in the philz thread its very clear.
Well you can try all that, I personally if it were my device would flash philz (safe kernel), boot to recovery, and just do a factory reset and see if it works... but I would only do this AFTER backing up my EFS using Ktool....
ggood luck
but if you want to try clearing cache etc first, no harm done of course
Just a side-note: regarding your links, etc that you post in the OP - I won't read those. I don't think other reputable members here will either. No offense please. I only trust sources on XDA, not random websites. If its not on xda, as far as I'm concerned, it is either incorrect or doesn't exist (i will act blind to it).
The Philz kernel for the Note is easy to find via google. Look either direct for the kernel or look for a PA installation guide and skip the odin option.

There is only one root account on a galaxy note, so it is the one-and-only-best.
If you want to root your device read Dr. Ketan's thread (search for it, good excercise for your brain).
And: best rom xyz posts or threads are against XDA rules.
Just read it: your best Rom thread yesterday was closed. Repeating this won't help...

[Q] How to unlock?

I want to use a tmobile SIM on the captivate but it asks me for a code. How do I get one? I searched up guides on how to unlock it but all of them seem outdated. I upgraded from 2.2 to 2.3.5 to CM11 4.4.2 latest snapshot and rooted. I've tried the sgs unlock tool on the play store but doesn't work. Help would be appreciated, thanks.

Did you see this? http://www.xda-developers.com/android/galaxy-s-sim-unlock-without-code/
I have almost the exact same question, except I mistakenly sold my phone before doing the unlocking. Now the guy I sold it to needs to get it working on a nonAT&T network. He has a sim card.
Can anyone confirm a way to get CM11 (nightly in late July) unlocked? I don't have to revert him to stock 2.1 to unlock do I? From what I read, I don't want this guy to keep trying, as it may become unlockable after a five or so different attempts. Is this still true?
Obviously, I'd prefer free. This guy is seriously unhelpful with providing his comfort level or understanding of root/brick/unlock, etc.
e-unlocker.com is one site I found. Is this legit?

There's a few way, gotta look around the forum to find it.
You'll have to be on stock firmware though, Froyo I believe (2.2) but GB (2.3) might work. The guide should mention it.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm not sure if he's capable of reverting to stock 2.2...
Is requesting an unlock code from AT&T a no go? I talked with a rep and she seemed to think it was do-able. I'm still current and paid up with Att so that isn't a problem. I need the IMEI, but no need to waste time on that if it doesnt' work.
I currently use another phone with ATT.
thanks

It should work with the unlock code. I haven't unlocked a Cappy in a very long time so I'm not sure if it needs the stock dialer. That being said, if he gets the pop-up box to enter the code, it should work.

Is there currently any way to root the Sprint G4 ZV9?

I just bought a G4 yesterday, so I'm still learning all about what is possible with it. It has the latest stock firmware, ZV9 / Marshmallow, installed.
I'm wondering if it's rootable, and if so if somebody can point me in the right direction.
I've seen people mention that the bootloader is still locked, and honestly I'm not real sure what that means.
So is there any way to root the Sprint G4? Possibly if I downgrade to an earlier firmware?
Thank you!
You can downgrade and root that way, and then just flash a marshmallow rom. So far it seems there won't be a root option for MM on this phone.

Yeah it feels like even though this phone is pretty new... Dev for this phone is pretty much dead... Kind of sucks. Root is so useful...
Is there a safe way to downgrade to ZV6 and then root that? Can I just follow this guide? http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/orig-development/root-tmo-vzw-intl-variants-soon-root-lg-t3164765

Yes, after downgrading you can follow that guide and use the ZV6 root. You will probably have to factory reset after downgrading as it probably won't boot initially.
Okay, thank you! So I guess right now it's pretty much a choice of rooted Lollipop (and Lollipop ROMs) or unrooted Marshmallow?

Just wanted to ask real quick, the guide (link above) includes the downgrade?
I've been looking around and waiting, but unfortunately I don't think I can wait for the 6.0 root, and I'm even more disappointed I can't help in any way possible due do lack of experience, but back to topic; could you link the downgrade tutorial?
Also, since you've been on zv9, when you go back to zv6 can you reply back with how the battery life handles?
So far I've been getting poor times and I've heard that the battery should preform somewhere for 6+ even on heavy usage.

As far as I know, they already had root methods.
Sprints issue was the fact their bootloader wasn't unlocked and seemingly didn't have plans to be.
-=This is in no way intended to be a root method I am suggesting.=-
So, before I was tuning into this thread, I had found this (screenshots) in the playstore, now I haven't tested it and don't plan to, but it did catch my interest.
I just wanted to know if anyone has heard / tried this, and if so, how did it go?
Again, I can't stress enough that this is not me answering the question of "Is MM rootable on Sprint LG G4. " I do not know what will happen to your device if you do try it.
Also, even though it lists a method, you can see the Sprint variation of this phone is not in the device list.
