So I've been trying to use wireless tether, both Wireless Tether for Root 3.0.7 and Barnacle, but lately its been hit or miss on their success, and hardly at all if its more than one device.
My main issue is with the verizon 4g hotspot app, Im unable to start it, and it causes wifi errors. When I start it, it goes through the provision and doesnt give an error itself, but then the hotspot checkbox to turn it on/off will be checked and greyed out, and never return to normal. If I go into wireless settings, wifi just reads Error, and I have to reboot to get it back to normal.
Anyone have any expertise on fixing or reinstalling the app? I think the main issue is when I was a bit callous after rooting it and trying to remove bloatware and I did something to break it, and through factory resets it doesnt do anything. Any help is much appreciated!
P.s. I wasnt sure where this should go, so I thought this might be a fair starting point. Mods: Feel free to move as you see fit
Searched around the forums and couldnt seem to find an answer or it turns into a foxfi/pda+ help thread. Wondering if anyone knows how to or point me in the right direction.
So I have a XT1060 (VZW DevEd) Rooted running Stock 4.4.2
My question is. Is there any way to activate Wifi tether without a custom kernal or rom?
Tried Wifi Tether 3.4 Experimental APK (some people have claimed around the net that it works) but nothing happens or atleast it seems like nothing happens since my laptop cannot find the wifi. (maybe someone here knows how?)
Even tried turning on Tether Freedom through XYZ Toolbox (supposed to remove tether restrictions) and starting Wifi Tether, same thing.
Dont want to use native app with XYZ, when i tried it My Verizon Mobile asked for SU access and i denied it, kinds weird, dont want that to pop up again.
Also have read that X Tether Module works, but it replaces entitlements, will they go back to normal when i stop the module or does it change it for good? And will Verizon ask for SU access?
also dont mind spending a dollar or 2 if one works from the Play store.
Thanks in advance. Hopefully this will help others with this question as well.
The my Verizon app does ask for root just deny it access..this happened with the last update to the app
X tether module will need xposed framework and as far as I know it only makes the hooks when called for

Thank you. You are correct. :highfive:
Went back to XYZ, Turned on Tether Freedom, Retried turning on Wifi Tether thru native and worked like a charm. No permission request to access SU from Verizon anymore. So just need to deny it the first time.
To tether on my rooted VZW Dev X I do the following...
Use the wifi_tether_v3_4-experimental1.apk from https://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
change device profile to galaxy nexus (cdma/lte)
check box: wifi-driver reload
check box: enabled routing fix
If you have troubles, its also suggested to...
check box: wifi-driver reload 2
Doing this, I can set the SSID and WPA key. And it doesn't touch any system files or anything, so it is one less thing to get in the way of taking future OTA updates.
Or Try this way -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/themes-apps/native-tether-vzw-4-4-t2536166
Or some use the Xposed module.
Straight Talk Tethering, rooted phone
Just trying to use my rooted ST note 3 for a hotspot for my little tab4 tablet. Ran the file programs but only have 2 lines with tethering info and both are set to '0'. Neither one is the providers check gateway? Line. Just a tethering provision line and a tethering automation line. When I turn on my hotspot it just runs 'verifying' and never goes anywhere. Even tried to turn it on and check files while its accessing but still only two lines at '0' show. Thanks for reading this.

I use X Tether http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.dym.motoxtether for my note 3 and it works for me (with X Tether you need Xposed Installer http://repo.xposed.info/module/de.robv.android.xposed.installer . I have used this on different devices and it has worked too, [HOW TO] Tether Blocking Fix http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/help/how-to-tether-blocking-fix-t2544487
x tether and xposed ??
Thanks for the reply. Really dont know enough to install these programs. Dont want to ruin cell. I rooted with towelroot. Trying to just make file changes or additions to get my hotspot working with st. Thanks.

On KitKat you must have exposed to tether(plus other programs). Google caved in to the big providers and the incentive seems to be money. If you are on JB Foxfi should work from the play store.
I looked around and did not see this. Now that the phone is opened up, if there an easy way to just enable the wireless tether?
I've had WiFi tethering since I bought the phone right after it came out, I'm not sure why others don't have the option. I found it in Settings -> More -> Tethering & Mobile Hotspot. I've had this on KK 4.4.4 as well as LP 5.1. Is it because it's only available with non grandfathered unlimited data devices (I think they got rid of that recently too)?
Unlimited can tether the same way, but we have to pay $20 a month. Xposed module xtether seems to work. It let me turn tether on without the message that I need to upgrade. Did not connect and test it yet.

Just flash CF's 1.1A ROM..it has wireless tether enabled where you can turn on in the stock app. No need for a separate xposed app.

Heh, ok. I've got their UNLIMITED TALK & TEXT 2GB plan 75$ and it incudes hotspot/tethering.
Anyone care to share what to edit to get WiFi tethering? Flashing a different ROM is not really what I wanna do right now, would like to just do it on my newly unlocked stock rom Turbo

I'm interested in the WiFi tether as well.
Install xposed, look for xtether, I've used it all day and 0 issues.
Alternatively, I think you can add the following line to /system/build.prop:
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true

+1 for xTether. It works great for me. I used it all day to play on my tablet while the wife was Black Friday shopping.

I did this and am having no luck
So I need a little help please. I have my phone unlocked, rooted, twrp installed, made a backup, and now SU updated from reading on here. I have a UDP and want my wifi tether to work without installing custom roms. I'm happy at this point with what stock does. I'm not the greatest with this, but I am not afraid to read. So to my problem. I'm stuck with the xpose thing. I just don't see or get what needs to be done to install it. I read I need to flash something first? But i'm not sure why. I looked a little at just adding the line in the build file but was not sure if that would still work or if that was old news. Please someone point in the right direction.
Thanks.

Use a file manager with root capabilities such as solid explorer, amaze file manager or whatever to edit the build.prop file. It's in /system/. Add 'net.tethering.noprovisioning=true' without quotes and reboot. Tethering within the settings app should now work.
Thanks for the reply. I added it at the end of the file. Rebooted and turned the tether on. no messages. I think I'm good to go. Again Thanks for the help.
Thanks for the tip on the build prop edit. I've been trying to figure out how to do this for a bit now. Just to confirm, this method will work on the latest version of 5.1 so long as I'm rooted and unlocked, correct?
It has worked great for me. I do not load in ROM'S or make a lot of other changes to my phone. Paying the 25.00 is just math for me. I was giving 30.00 a month to Verizon to pay for tethering. Now I don't. So in 1 month I come out ahead. You need your boot loader unlocked, and will need to pay for that 1 time.
Will this tether-unlock be "visible" to VZ and cause me issues under my unlimited plan? (I presume by smooth's reply that he hasn't had this problem, but I want to be sure)
I recently updated to unlimited data with ATT, and found out after I updated to the new plan that I no longer able to turn the Tethering ON, which I only use it sometimes for may son's Tablet, when we are in an area where we don't have wifi like in my car.
My question, if I root my device, will I be able to have that function back, or is there other option?
Before someone sees search the forum, which I did, there so much information, I dont know which is valid anymore, any advice or link is much appreciated.
my device is:
sm-N900A
Android version 5.0
Base Band version:N900AUCSE0C3
Thanks in advances
no luck

My understanding is the issue is 5.0. 4.0 & 4.2 seem to be possible right now.
