Ok so I have successfully rooted my phone after updating to Gingerbread. However, I had a few issues and had to read through a bunch of different posts to get there. So I'm bored and decided to consolidate everything into one.
If anyone has any other issues or fixes post them here and I will update the OP.
Credit goes to mtmichaelson and all those who helped get this working
http://androidinvasion.us/forum/index.php/topic,77.0.html
Here it is:
1. ROOT PROCESS
A. Get back to Stock:
-download the stock Zv4 ROM zip from here and put it on your external SD card- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1326893
-Back up all your apps in titanium (important: USER apps only, no data or system apps)
NOTE: It has been reported that restoring apps and data in titanium may cause some issues coming from Froyo to Gingerbread. I backed up my user apps only for easy re-install and NO data or system apps. It worked without a problem.
-MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 4G ENABLED
-boot into recovery (CWM)
-backup?
-factory reset
-select "install ZIP from SD card" in CWM, and install the stock ZIP from the link
-re-bootyour phone (you will have to re-activate it as well)
-install revo toolkit from here if it was wiped with the system reset - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1144951
-press "install recovery" and then !!!Revo Stock!!! to go back to stock recovery and wait for it to complete
B. Update to Zv6 then Zv7 (Gingerbread)
-manually search for the update and install it (this will install the v6 update)
-once that installs, manually search again to install the gingerbread update
NOTE: Some people still can't get gingerbread. Verizon has not finished rolling the update out to everyone yet.
Now here is where it gets a little dicey...
C. Rooting Your Gingerbread Phone
-pick up the rooting package from mtmichaelson here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1326509
-follow the instructions he has on that page to obtain root
-Two issues arose for me from this point on.
2. ISSUES
A. Drivers Issue
-The first issue was that some people, including myself, couldn't download the esteem drivers.
-Some people were able to get the drivers from this page to work - http://androidnerds.net/2011/10/08/lg-esteem-oneclickroot-now-ready/.
-I was not able to get my computer to recognize my phone using the above drivers either. I would run the root command from the downloaded package and it would get stuck at "running daemon something something".
-What I did was manually uninstall the LG drivers from my computer and deleted everything "LG related"
-Then I got the drivers from the LG website at this link - http://www.lgforum.com/resources
-Scroll down to the Verizon section and download the "LG_VZW_UNITED..." drivers.
-Your phone should be recognized using the drivers from one of these links.
B. Superuser/Root access Issue - NOTE: this should be fixed now with mtmichaelson's newest root method found here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1326509
-The second issue that came up was that the previous superuser app I had installed stayed on my phone after the updates, even though I lost root.
-The root command from the LG Esteem page would think I had root, but I actually didn't get root access.
-Apparently this issue came up on the Esteem previously and someone wrote a fix for it here - http://androidforums.com/esteem-all...-w-superuser-3-0-6-binary-3-0-3-download.html. It will uninstall the old superuser and install the new version.
3. INSTALL CWM RECOVERY
-mtmichaelson's new rooting package should automatically install CWM recovery on your phone now.
Old method:
-To get CWM back on your phone it's the same process as before the update. Get the Revo Toolkit from thecubed here and follow the instructions - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1144951
-There is sometimes an issue where the recovery does not install correctly and gives a fatal error. If this happened, make sure you have version 1.17.1 of busybox installed at system/bin. This worked for me and I got it installed correctly.
...And you should have root after trying a combination of the above. Hope this helped.
-If you have READ through this and still have any issues you can get more personalized help on the IRC channel here.
-Again I did not help with any of this, I'm just consolidating info. If you want to thank someone, thank mtmichaelson and everyone else who helped figure all this out.
-I will keep updating this as new issues arise.
Thank you for compiling this information, it is a useful reference for people to have. I know that the drivers issue took me quite a while to work out even though it is pretty simple. Hopefully this helps others to get rooted with much less trouble.
Quick question using that stock ROM will it completely unroot me?
Also a bit confused with me running revolt does that mess up me just flashing that and it has the stock boot image.
I've Revolted have you?? Sent via tapatalk plugin.
i'm having issues with CWM... i flashed back to my stock+root backup and every time the OTA update tries to install it boots to clockwork. ran the exitrecovery.zip in clockwork and it still boots to clockwork. i cleared the cache/dalvik again, the OTA is downloading gonna try it again...

You need to use Revo toolkit to get cwm off and the stock recovery back on. from there it will run fine. Then you just have to reroot using MT's modified rooting .bat file

Got it. I guess the first release of revo toolkit didn't have the flash stock recovery option. Can't wait to finally have gb on this thing..
Still reboots to cwm... it won't flash stock recovery. Any ideas?

Go into revotoolkit, Click install clockwork recovery, it should pop up to choose !!revo_stock!! or 4.0.0.2. Choose the revo stock. After it runs, click to check which recovery is installed and make sure it says revo stock, then reboot.

It depends on you connection speed. If it's 3g a while. I recommend doing it on 4g or wireless. You also need busybox installed in the right location. Install the version 1.17.1 in system/bin. The newer versions of busybox may work now but they previously did not.

It looks like it's a common problem. I haven't installed the ROM yet but mt's new gingervolt rom is supposed to make CWM stick - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1326542
Ok so I'm a complete and utter noob when it comes to CWM etc. Never had an android device before this one, never flashed a ROM.
I've got a pretty good grasp of whats going to be happening here, but I'm a little skiddish.
I'm on stock GB with root, at the point where i'm supposed to install CWM with the RevoToolkit. In the RevoToolkit instructions, thecubed says "If no version is listed, STOP and post here.". Well, no version is listed, presumable because i'm on a GB stock recovery. Do I stop here, or do I proceed with installing clockwork recovery?
Specifically, RevoToolkit reports "Version Not Found".
Advice?

I had the same thing I got all pissed and thought I was screwed then someone mentioned the GB thing. You'll be fine if you flash cwm. Just flash cwm, boot into it, make a backup in cwm, flash gingervolt, and reboot. everything will work fine

Awesome, thank you for the quick reply. Another stupid question that i'm sure is answered somewhere on here, but what exactly will I lose when flashing a ROM, and what will I be able to restore back with a backup?
Hi all,
I decided to post here because i'm new and I don't have permission to post in the proper thread. Anyway I'm trying to install the new rom 31.0 over my current on 12.1. It installs successfully but then I get stuck on the htc logo boot screen and yes I did the wipe data/cache thing. Can anyone help with this?
Much appreciated.
Did you update the kernel to a newer kernel? Also I would do a full wipe and then install. The two versions you are working with are very different.

did you confirm the MD5 sum? For ARHD 31.0 it's: 601F92B13104A373868C6C1E05972CF9
if it's not, then it's a bad download and you should download again.
EDIT: you should also select WIPE in Aroma installer!

If you don't have a functioning ROM, you'll have to enter custom recovery, adb works there. then you'll have to use "adb pull" commands to get stuff off your internal storage to your PC.
I think there's also an application called "Android Commander" which is basically a graphical file manager that acts as a front-end to adb.

I have a functioning ROM, I'm currently on Android Revolution 12.1. I just couldn't install their latest version (31.0) over my current one even after doing the data wipe both in recovery and AROMA. I re-downloaded the file and checkd the MD5 which seems to pass so I will try to install this new DL when I get home from work.
Thanks for the input guys and I'll keep you posted.

I would still recommend backing up everything to your PC, you MAY have to eventually wipe that. It's always a good idea to keep a backup of everything on your PC (or at least on a USB stick if you have an OTG).
Also remember that most likely your nandroids are in /data/media/... (which will not show up using MTP) as opposed to /data/media/0/... (which does show up on MTP), so if you want to keep them, either move them from /data/media/... to /data/media/0/... EDIT: you need a root-enabled file explorer on your phone to see /data/media/...
or use adb pull to get them off your phone.
Good luck, and remember to hit the thanks button if we helped

The newest CWM is 6.0.4.9. My suggestion would be to delete LGFreedom folder off your SD Card and re-run the FreedomFlex app again as it will then download the latest CWM and you can just flash the recovery again. I had the same issue with 6.0.4.8
Problem is I can't get anything accept CWM, and I can't mount internal card, LG driver is already installed, and I tried to reinstall it, but he is still not seeing it. Any idea how to access it? If I have to have old Sprint ROM to install FreedomFlex again, I need somehow to transfer it to the internal memory and start the installation from there.

I don't quite get what the problem is.... Are you stuck in CWM or can you boot into the rom?
If you're stuck in CWM and don't have a backup or any other rom to flash (why?), you can always sideload a rom using adb (if you are stuck in a CWM bootloop look here for help http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2744482)
If you can boot back into the rom, follow my previous reply....
The only other option is to flash back to stock by following the tutorial here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2644083

Can't boot back to the ROM, I have stock ROM downloaded on hard drive, but I thought if I make a mistake, I would easily copy it to internal memory, and install it from there. Problem is that I cant, adb devices is showing nothing, so I can't use shell to copy ROM.

Well it looks like the only option is to go back to stock from the link I posted and start again, but make sure you've got everything on your phone you need before trying anything... Also trust me CM11 isn't worth bothering with just yet as there is a lot of issues with it, but I'm sure it will get there as PlayfulGod is working on it

Tnx for help, but I spent 4 hours trying to solve why I can't reach internal memory. At the end, LG drivers weren't working, so I pushed manually to set it as ADB port , and finally found the phone through adb devices command. After that, returning stock was easy. Now, I'm on CM11, thanx on those links, combining with one more thread and the problem is solved.
I just got an Ota update. I537UCUCNH3. Can't find any info online about this firmware. Anybody have any info?

Cfg will wipe your data, most likely will kill root and prevent re-rooting.

sorry, could you be a little more specific with these? I'm still a little new. What did you do to restore back to stock? I've currently removed bloatware through titanium, so no longer have at&t software. also, i'm rooted. Am I correct in assuming this is the order?
1 - Restore to stock
2 - Wipe caches
3 - Flash the zip (The entire i537_Update.zip?)
4 - Mount system (Does this mean use the "Mount" feature in SafeStrap and navigate to the specific "System" folder?)
5 - Delete SU app from recovery file manager (completely lost as to how to do this. Is it the file manager in the "Advanced" section of SafeStrap? If so, is that only for files or can I uninstall apps?)
6 - Leave the binary (also not sure what to do here)
7 - Reboot
8 - Check everything is fine
9 - Reboot into recovery
10 - Flash su.zip (Where is this file located?)
Sorry to be a pain, just hoping to get my facts straight. Thanks.

Restore back to stock, needs to be 100% stock NE3,reboot to recovery, wipe caches, install zip.Do not reboot yet,in safestrap navigate to mount, click on system, then click advanced, click file manager, navigate to where su app is(most likely in system/app) just delete it.binary is in xbin so just dont worry about it but dont delete it.Reboot.Once you see the upgrade popup, reboot recovery flash su zip and your done.I could not strip out knox or disable selinux because it screwed up wifi. theres a de-knoxing zip somewhere on here just use that after your all booted up.

Yes flash the odin files. Dont worry about losing root just use towelroot and install safestrap again. Then flash SuperSU zip and continue. If I could make it easier I would. I spent a few hours trying to avoid all this, but there was no way around it.
If you update via OTA you will not be able to re-root using towelroot just a FYI.

So the only way to root is flashing an older kernel and root with towelroot and flash the newer kernel again?
That is at least what I see for other phones that have gotten updates that broke towelroot.
Hello Everyone,
I know this is an old tablet and mine works fine but there are so many apps i cannot run on it because it's so old.
For some reason when I go to recovery (power plus volume down) it only gives me options to install from cache or to install from SD card. My Tab doesn't have an SD card slot and I've tried many different things like putting the Google Apps file in an /sdcard folder but no luck. Maybe I need a better recovery that will allow me to install from OTA USB or from Internal storage, or directly from the PC.
I have never rooted a phone before or unlocked a bootloader, and maybe I'm missing a step, but no matter how many forum posts I check people seem to be able to run it from /sdcard which is simply not working for me.
Please help!
I've got the same issue here, and tried everything, from what you've said you've done to using command lines in adb fastboot, and nothing seem to bring me closer to write on the root of the device. Maybe with both of us asking here someone pops up to bring some light to this.
@saitar
Install the TWRP Recovery 2.8.7.0 or higher.

I don't know if this is still an issue for you, but I went further as nobody seemed to see the post.
I used this TWRP recovery, then flashed the lollipop rom here. But I stopped at the gapps... the only one I was able to flash was this one, but the keyboard isn't showing up. I tried the complete compilation and the flashing failed due to lack of space, although the device was plenty of it...

Thanks for replying. Yes, this is what I found out reading in xda and other forums, as the recovery I mentioned above is the 2.7.1.0, but is there a 2.8 recovery for the Tab 8.9, or should we be able to update the 2.7 to 2.8 without problems? Edit: I noticed in your post signature you got a 3.0 version on your device... how?
@saitar
Here are the link for TWRP https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...ev-testing-twrp-galaxy-tab-8-9-p7310-t3469987
You can update your TWRP with the ZIP file from your existing Recovery or with Odin and the *.Tar file.

You're the man! th tar file didin't work, but I was able to flash the 3.0 TWRP, then flashed the Nougat version and the Gapps. Everything is working fine.
Thanks again!
Nougat update for i957?
Great to see the efforts here, kudos.
A naive question, whether this is going to work on my i957 currently on 4.0.4 ICS? If no, any recommendations for any latest ROM for i957? Being on 4.0.4, a number of apps have started causing issues, support not being available.
If there's another thread I should post on, pls suggest the same.
Thx
