I know on order to fix GPS, it is suggested to flash back to a stock based ROM, turn on location services, then restore a cm11 backup. Last time I tried this it broke my recovery and had to ruu, what would be a safe stock based ROM to use for this that won't mess with recovery?

You could run stock rooted, but I think any Sense ROM should do the trick. I know for sure that this one doesn't mess with recovery as I use it frequently: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2712250

I'm running ARHD 11.0 which is a 4.2.2 ROM. I want to go to a 4.1.2 ROM to I can run a 4.1.2 kernel. Is this just as simple as flashing a 4.1.2 ROM from recovery?
You have to wipe your phone when going from 4.2.2 to 4.1.2. If you want to keep everything, just get SuperBackup or Titanium Backup and back everything up.
Thanks. I don't mind wiping my phone. I just want to know if it's straight for to go from newer ROM to older ROM.

No problem It is always better to wipe anyways going from a ROM to a different one just to make sure you don't get any errors and bugs.
Just to make sure I'm in the right page...the ROM comes with the kernel, right?

You can either install a custom ROM based on 4.1.2 (which most likely means you'll have to find an older version of a current custom ROM, like Android Revolution HD 9.x or TrickDroid 6.x) or you can download and install a RUU which will basically wipe your device and install the official, stock 4.1.2 for it which you can then root and install a kernel to.
if he just wipe data, and flash from 4.2.2. to 4.1.2, he can get the 0 folder in his internal memory (and just move everything?), can't he?
well I remember to have a little problem with my s3 when i did that, but you can try... if you have problems wipe everything including internal sd and flash again... (but of course you may need to flash thru sideload or OTG)
AND YES, the rom comes with the kernel, if you come from a HOX (for example) you dont need to flash the kernel manually, as was needed in the HOX
Thanks guys! Will try that

I've researched several forums for help with my GPS lock but I would like a little guidance from someone more experienced before I proceed with a fix. I'm comfortable flashing and I'm starting from the following configuration:
Starting Point:
1. Rooted running CM-10.2-20131016-Nightly, Baseband 1.00.20.0913_3, Kernel 3.410-CM-g5afe42c [email protected] #1
2. Performed a Nandroid backup with CWM Recovery v6.0.3.6
My questions are as follows:
1. Do I need to S-Off to fix this issue, and if so, what's the most efficient way of doing this starting from my CM nightly build and CWM version?
2. I have GPS status from the Android Market on there already and I've cleared GPS data. Do I need to reflash stock ROM to download the new agps data or can I do it from CM?
3. If I have to reflash stock to perform this GPS trick, will my backup restore everything back to the way it is, including installed applications and settings, or do I have to restore all my preferences, accounts, etc.
I've been lucky thus far with ROM flashing and never needed to restore a backup so I'm unclear the level of effort after a stock to CM swap maneuver. Thanks in advance for the help.

if you restore a backup everything will be the same as it was when you backed it up, settings, data, etc. all the same
Is there anyone else out there with this same problem or a solution?

Make a backup of current cm in twrp....... everything but storage options...... flash sense based rom...... update prl/profile(since your already in sense) go into maps while on data connection(found that works better than using wi-fi) maps will get a gps lock.... reboot into twrp restore backup of cm and than i always fix permissions and wipe dalv and cache... reboot into cm and profit hope this helps, never had a problem with gps when doing this.
**edit** a backup in twrp will back everything in the os up......apps....texts....settings....everything

A few questions on your procedure:
1. Will any sense based ROM work or do I need to use an RUU with stock recovery?
2. Can I perform this procedure with S-On, which is my current state?
If this works successfully, I will write a small and detailed guide for other people to use. Thanks.

1) any sense based will work.
2) not sure if the one is the same way with s-on.... but if so you will have to extract the boot.img from the rom and flash that via adb in bootloader than flash the rom in twrp.
Suggestion...... Go s-off your phone makes life simpler and makes playing more fun and much more safe
I have been reading in several threads and I think I understand this correctly but I wanted to verify it. I have safe strap installed. I am on a 4.3 rom and the custom rom I want to install is also 4.3. I would like to make the custom rom my primary rom and get rid of the partition limitations. In order to do this I can wipe the stock rom slot and install it there, correct? If I make a nandroid back up of the original rom before I wipe it, I should be able to just restore that rom if I wanted to later, correct?

You can't NANDROID anything yet, but you can always try it and just use the MJ5 restore method if all else fails. I would go ahead and download all the files there first just in case crap happens (then you won't have to wait an hour to download it)
So basically only backup the data with twrp since the rest won't restore and then if it craps out do the mj5 restore then restore my data with twrp. Is this the restore method you are referring to?

I have just recently restarted using this phone due to my uscellular S4 getting turned off. I am now back on my LG-P990 currently rooted and running CM10.1. BUT most importantly to me is the fact that I have all my wonderful apps on my s4, I want to be able to use them by using the LG phone as a tether and calls not much else BUT CM10.1 tethering does not work, so i find myself flashing rom after rom, avatar rom, older CM mods, none would turn on tethering, so i flashed a modded version of MIUI for this phone and it worked except for ONE thing no signal, tethering turned on just fine so i decided to look around for other roms and found Slimrom TRYED to flash it didnt work, try to flash actual MIUI roms off there site, didnt work, met with an error in CWM Recovery after some searching I found its because Im running the OLD Bootloader -_- THIS is the issue im having IF MIUI does NOT work is it possible to downgrade the bootloader again so i can restore my CM10.1 backup? I have been working at this for a week, if there is something here about this can someone please just point me at it? I would appreciate any help.
On a side note i DID soft brick the phone the other day and found a program called nvflash witch flashed an install of CM mod. Dont know if that will help any.

I really do not understand how other ROMs deny Tethering. Did you flash the latest 2.x kernel by pengus77 after installing the rom? Did you make a clean install(wipe everything then install)? On the other hand, yes you can switch bootloaders as much as you like, just remember that changing the bootloader wipes everything on your internal memory, so do a backup. Did you try just plain old stock 4.0.4? Should work there. Ask anything you want, if you're still having questions.

As to the flashing to stock i lost the original rom backup i had made along time ago and cant find the original firmware anywhere online. When I flashed CM 10.1 I just ran with it, when i go to try tethering it says "Turning on portable wifi hotspot." and it stays on that no matter what untill i restart, left the phone running for 2 days once and that was still stuck on that before i restarted. As for flashing a 2.x kernel i had no idea about that. But yes when i did the installs i would do a clean wipe and install. Most of what i read online led me to believe that there was an error with CM 10.1 nightlys that was not being fixed for the tethering. So that is why i decided to go to another rom. Two questions one how do i go about finding the original firmware for this phone and two how would i go about updating or downgrading the bootloaders and could i be pointed to the files please?

Okay, This is SFSP by @sgspluss which is a pretty fast, stable and battery-friendly slimmed down version of stock ICS. It is available for both Old and NewBL, so you might want to try that first. This is AIO Toolkit. I know that you've used it and bricked your phone, but try again, and for the love of God install the nvflash drivers because most people skip that part. You have to do it manually and if you're running Windows 8 you need to disable Driver Signature Verification. But yeah, you switch bootloaders with this.
Flashed a Paranoid Android rom a long time ago, can't seem to get back to stock no matter what I try. Need to get to a stock rom to activate the phone for my dad.
You didn't list what you tried, so what I would do:
If you want pure stock, download the latest RUU and run that. You may have to update the firmware first.

Be sure to back EVERYTHING up onto a computer. RUU clean wipes your phone. It will also undo any mods you made like HBOOT, recovery, etc.
tip:run the EXE. that's the one that contains EVERYTHING you'll need, including the stock ROM.
