Hello all,
So I know some of the developers are moving on to better phones... and I wonder, after the nexus one which has been an awesome phone, whats the latest greatest everyones going to (I use Att)
You didn't give a time frame for your upgrade but if you can hold out then the S2 looks like an excellent option. It's the first phone that I feel upgrades everything about the N1 and will likely be as popular as the original Galaxy S with the devs. It does lack NFC and has the same resolution as the N1 but it'll probably be years before NFC is commonplace (In the UK at least) and the Super Amoled Plus screen has been called one of the best, if not the best displays out there by several reviews (Check out engadgets review).
The LG 2X (or G2X) is gaining a bit of momentum, although the stock software is pretty bad.
I'd definitely gofor the galaxy S2. Thats like the phone of the millennia.

The S2 has NFC really (point of correction)
And to add to that, i have been using N1 since the month it came out and to be frank the only phone worthy of being an upgrade to my N1 is the Samsung Galaxy S2.

Not in the UK it doesn't
I don't want to go any bigger, so probably Desire S unless the Galaxy S2 Mini is almost exactly the same with the only difference being 3.7" vs 4.3" screen.
i didn't make up my mind between htc sensation or samsung g s2
I'd definitely go for the s2. I see more value for money on that.but that's just me.

Agreed, the Galaxy S II is the first phone that has looked liked a worthwhile upgrade to the N1. I've been a little tempted by it, however I've decided I can hold out a bit longer - for the possibility of a Nexus 3 in December. I'm hoping it'll be as revolutionary as the N1, and not a complete disappointment like the Nexus S.
I wouldn't really call the Nexus S a disappointment.... just more of a Nexus One.5; upgraded touch pannel, NFC, better GPU/CPU. It just wasn't a huge leap like the the previous ~500ghz phones to the Snapdragon.
I wanted the Sensation because I don't like the way Samsung has treated their upgrades, but if the SGSII is hackable enough I might concider it over the Sensation.
I'm thinking HTC Pyramid/Sensation...if it can be unlocked & rooted
I'm a vanilla stock Nexus guy, so I just splurged on a Nexus S. If it weren't for an accident, I probably would've hold out for the 3rd Nexus iteration or Samsung Galaxy S II.
Any phone with dual core and gingerbread in it
anything dual core
Seriously there is no point going with the Desire S or anything like that.
You're getting the same CPU except die shrinked. OK GPU is better but I'm not big on touch screen gaming so its moot for me, of course you may think otherwise. Screen, battery, functionality all similar to Nexus, you won't see much difference.
Basically you want a major bump, and that means atrix, SGS2, sensation, LG2x.
atrix is bootloader locked, ditto sensation. not sure about LG2x but it only has 512RAM, otherwise looks like a good phone. But Samsung Galaxy S2 looks like the runaway best option - you get a vastly better screen, better battery, cpu and gpu that smokes, also ships with gingerbread, very popular so lots of dev support, can't lose. Only issue is cost, gigantor size and availability - apparently there are 3 million preorders/backorders!!!!
In all honesty if SGS2 is not for you, I'd just wait. I'm doing that with my nexus one, I figure a 3.7 or 4" superphone is round the corner (not too keen on 4.3 gigantic size either), or I'll just save a few hundred bucks, in meantime the nexus is still trucking along doing everything I need it to do (push emails, SIP, music, light browsing, google sauce integration, gps, and oh yeah it works as a phone lol).
Is the new Sammy only coming out for ATT or is there also a Tmo version?
first time nexus one user. like it but i see y they made the s. had the g2x took it back, and i have the xperia play on the way. might go with the sensation on the 6th. they cracked the thunderbolt so they will crack that as well. ill keep selling and trading till than.
I have the GS1 and I am for sure getting a GS2. I have had all the droids except for the charge and the galaxy line is far superior to any other Droid. The only other phone I would get is the next Nexus. The rumor is its going to be the Nexus R.

Nexus R? How about Nexus 3!
I've Bern full out nexus one proponent. But the galaxy s2 is finally what interests me to upgrade. Its very future proof, comes with up to date android 2.3.3, minimal skin, and unlocked boot loader. It ticks every box more than any other upcoming phone.
I noticed that amazon were having a sale on the note for £375. Do you think there is any point getting it now? I did have the galaxy s3 and one x. I returned the galaxy s3 because I didn't like touchwiz really or the phone in general. I also returned the one x because of quality control issues. I loved the one x but quality control issues put me off :/. So is the note a good buy for that price?
Galaxy note also has touchwiz. But if you dont like it just install a custom launcher like nova or apex.
What else is it you want info about? In my opinion the note is outstanding and is a good buy at almost any price.
Can you elaborate on the One X issues?
I'm thinkng of going the other way. I have the Note, and I'm getting annoyed with the "Super Bug" issue that causes risks with ICS.
I would like to have a so called "Safe" device running ICS like the HTC One X. It seems on paper to be as good or better than the Note, albeit with a slighlty smaller screen.
thanks
Oh there were some issues with quality control. Some models had screen flex some had gaps which gathered dust. Some had screen flickering which has now been solved. Someone has found a wifi issue now, this happens when the device heats up the metal contacts touching the wifi chip to the back of the phone come lose and wifi strength/signal lowers. & yea my sisters gs2 has the eMMC problem, thats the only thing I'm wary about :/.
Hi. I had a One x for 3 weeks. Well 4 of them. Had constant problems with signal. It would lose signal then never regain it unless restarted. The phone was brilliant when working and felt nice in the hand but wasnt willing to keep restarting all the time. Got the Note and am amazed with it. I prefer it to the one x.

I'm finding that I don't love my HTC One. (I LOVED my Samsung Galaxy SII once I discovered rooting and flashing.) I did not go with the SG4 due to the locked bootloader but now I'm wondering if I made a mistake. I've read that a lot of ROMs can be flashed (using Loki exploit if you're not on newest bootloader). I'm still anxious about getting stuck with AT&T bloatware and touchwiz but I'm leaning towards sending the One back. I need reassured that I won't grow to hate the HTC One.
Issues:
Not loving the camera.
HATE lack of menu button (using TeaMSeven kernel to get logo to menu but this option seems to be generally missing. How can that be? Why have a nonfunctional button?!!!)
HATE no SD card. Phone is already full.
Not a big fan of the slippery aluminum case. Currently have an otterbox but find it bulky (will be for sale cheap if I send the One back!)
Phone seems a little tall and narrow due to screen size + speakers. (LOVE the sound!!!)
Otherwise seems ok. I loved my HTC Aria (until it crapped out) so I think if I was stuck with stock if rather have htc. Still, it sounds like I can get the sg4 and have hopes of custom roms.
What do you think? Anyone know both phones and have advice? Anyone think I've missed some great features of the htc one?

I have used the SG4 and had no problems with it (stock)
Their is also the LG G2 and Moto X or a Nexus 5 to choose from The One is not for everyone, but it's the best phone I have ever owned for Rom development and all around variety (Sense - CM11 - AOSP - Miui - GPE ) good luck finding anything like that on another device.

I found the S4 to be cheap, unreliable and ugly. I'd rather wait for the S5, HTC one 2, or an iPhone (uhg). Tho I feel the nexus is a very good alternative to the HTC One, having a decently OK camera and having a very nice price point. If you'd take a look at the HTC One and any other device, stock, you'd find that sense UI looks so much better, more professional than mostly any other phone on the market. Build quality is some what like an iPhone or even better and you can't go wrong with the fact that HTC actually updates its devices quite fast comparing to the other OEMs (apart from nexus). HTC also optimizes the software for the phone, unlike the S4 where touchwiz is basically ploped on and forgotten about or if Samsung really cared they'd at least make it a little more professional-looking. Samsung has an octa core 1.9 GHz processor (quad for us) yet the HTC One only has 1.7 GHz quad, tho the htc one still mostly beats the S4 by a ton in real world applications. Heck I've got mine down to 1.1 GHz and its still flying. So I would say keep the htc one and just do some minor mods than wasting your money buying a S4
Happy Flashing from the proud owner of a HTC One.

And for the case of custom roms... You will never find a more extensive and wide range of Roms that can even come close to comparing what the HTC One forum has, HTC one has the best developers working on making great Roms and mods and etc here and I think that our development is probably almost as good as the hammerhead's. Best part of xda is the HTC One forum to me

Just download Trickster mod from play store and enable it there.
Happy Flashing from the proud owner of a HTC One.
I see 3 contenders, each has strengths and weaknesses [in no particular order]:
HTC One (M8)
Samsung Galaxy S5
Sony Xperia Z2
I'm not thrilled with the camera on the HTC One (M8), but overall I'm ok with HTC
and have been very happy and thankful for the support I've received on this forum,
I love my Vivid and it's still a great phone.
The S5 has a great camera, and all the other features that matter for me [SD card slot,
active community support, replaceable battery, strong environment resistance] ... BUT
I don't like KNOX and based on what I'm reading [and experiencing with my Samsung
Galaxy Note 10.1 - 2014 Edition tablet], that lockdown & strategy isn't going to go away
any time soon ... and may, for all intents and purposes, be 'insurmountable' without
giving up warranty support - which isn't OK with me, cuz I'm not made of money ...
On to the Sony ... seems like the specs are pretty good, perhaps lacking in onboard
memory [16Gb at the moment, I'd prefer 32Gb or 64Gb], good processors, decent design
and build quality ... but the community support seems thin [perhaps because Sony isn't
a huge player in the US? Perhaps because they're release cycle & adoption by big US
carriers is a lilttle thin & doesn't get as much press as HTC and Sammy? I don't know]
and I don't know how good the accessory market is for them ...
So the question is ... what phone is next for you, and how/why did you come to that
decision?
If it's one of these three, great ... if it's not, great ... because that may help me to see
options I have missed.
Thanks in advance for taking time to slog through my drivel.

Trying to keep the expenses down, so to actually upgrade I am considering the Galaxy S4. The S5 is too expensive, HTC One does not have a replaceable battery, don't particularly like Sony these days.
Mind, I am still 3 months from upgrade time, and my mind is not set.
I replaced the Vivid with a Nexus 4. Comparing the early effort for custom roms Vivid vs Nexus, it was literally night and day. Waiting weeks/months to find a way to unlock the bootloader vs 2 minutes with the nexus.
I will never buy another carrier branded phone, nor a phone that is locked down. If I were to upgrade again, I would have to go with the Nexus 5. I might not get the bells, whistles and prestige of the lofty flagships, but for an Android buff like me, the open nature of the nexus line is priceless.

I was using Vivid in 2011, 2012.
In 2013, I was thinking between google edition i9505 and AT&T SHG-I337 for the upgrade Google edition came unlock but it was cost around $600 at that time. AT&T phone was network locked but it cost around $65 for upgrade with 2 years plan.
I went with AT&T SGH-I-337. I rooted the phone before I activated. After activation I installed the custom rom. The phone came with Android 4.2.2.
This month I installed the 4.4.2 custom rom (Golden eye 29, 30 then 31). I am very happy with S4 this way.
I am thinking of going for S5 after the developer find a way to tame the knox thingy.
So I'm looking to buy a new phone and after researching am not sure which to get. I'm leaning towards the g2 cause it'll be way cheaper. I don't need a 4k screen, the camera seems pretty close and I like the smaller footprint. I'd like an SD slot but 32gb should be enough.
I'm hoping a lollipop ROM will be out soon but closed is good enough for me.
Just wanted to see what you all thought and if anyone decided to keep their g2 vs upgrading.

You can get a brand new lg g2 for 200$ (vs980 32 GB) and the cheapest g3 will probably be around 400. You pretty much said it yourself. The g2 is half the price and still very capable. Of course if price wasn't an issue at all I'd go for the g3 but considering the g2 can be bought for half the price unlocked now makes the decision easy if it were me. Now if your gonna get it on contract it's a different story since looking at deals both can be gotten for free on contract but I always buy unlocked and use prepaid
Sent from my VS980 4G
Tough choice. Honestly the G2 is a super awesome phone. We also have a pretty solid G3 Rom port so they basically have the same features.
The VS980 from Verizon has build in Qi Wireless Charging... where the G3 does not. My CoWorker has a G3 and aside from the (physically) bigger screen... I can't tell a difference.
For me the G3 is also to big. I could probably juggle it but the G2 just feels perfect in my hand.
So IMO, the G2 with Cloudy G3 rom = Perfection
I ended up going with a G2. Found a pretty new one on eBay for 180!! I also considered the new moto x cause they're the same size but the screen, battery and camera are worse than the g2. And its not able to be rooted.
Nice!
I use Cloudy G3 Rom v2 (not 2.1) and it is flawless. It needs some tweaking for Verizon usage out of the box but just cosmetic stuff. G3 Tweakbox + Xposed.
Cool. I'll def be rooting. I was looking at it seems some lollipop Roms are starting to drop.
I'll have to re educate myself cause it looks like you have to have specific radios for different Roms etc??
