Sup Nation,
I am assuming this has been posted in other forums, but I bet there are people like me that only look at the Vivid, Raider, Velocity section of XDA.
But I thought I would post up a link to get the new Google Play app.
Google have renamed the "Android Market" to "Google Play"
It has a slightly different UI on the phone, and the Google Play Website has been updated too.
Here is the UPDATED VERSION link
The main improvement to the app: under the My Apps menu, you can see Installed and All Apps in a separate tab. This allows you to re-download any app you've previously tried and deleted, or paid for and uninstalled, bringing the functionality more in line with the desktop portal.
Enjoy people!
I liked the sound of Android Market better, but they both serve the same purpose so w/e
Im guessing this is only on ICS?
no.. I ran into it today on my stock vivid.. scared the crap out of me.. thought I DL something that will cost me.. haha
Its cool though.. I'm new to all of it.. but on their site it will tell you what program will work for your phone and it will send it to your phone and install it.. without any connection to your PC or home network.
A rose by any other name is still a rose.

Nope, it's a market update. I'm running Gingerbread and just got it the other day. Anyone have any idea why they decided to do this? It seems a bit unnecessary, and personally, I liked the Android Market a lot better. This just makes it seem like a game store for kids or something. I don't like it.
After watching several videos of it battling the Siri of iOS while I was awaiting my tablet, I was hyped about using this feature.
Now that I have had my tablet for almost almost a week now, it was overhyped and the accuracy was overblown in those videos on YouTube.
I know it's not my accent, since it gets my questions correctly, it just doesn't answer 'em.
I tried simple stuff too, like requesting for the current score of USA vs Korea in volleyball (when the game was going on), requesting for specific train times, requesting to see my calendar, asking it to see if I was busy on a certain day and time, and it just Google'd these questions, not telling me the answers (especially the last one; it Google'd "Am I busy at 4pm on this coming Monday?" instead of showing my calendar).
Hell even the simplest things like "show me my calendar" has it Googling that, and not actually showing me my calendar.
I've only ever successfully gotten it to tell me the weather, the time, set alarm, and tell me when the Olympics 2012 ends.
If Google Voice Search (or w/e they call it) is this bad, I wonder how bad Siri is, seeing how in those videos, Google beat Siri all the time.
Had a guy at work playing around with Siri, not very impressing, certainly nothing like the staged commercials. Technology is not there yet. I think that Dragon has a better voice recognition ability, (part of Swype Beta), but I have not played with their "Dragon Go" yet on my tablet. Didn't care for it much on my phone.

Siri answers a lot more of those types of questions, although it is definitely slower as the videos point out. Overall though, I rarely ask those questions anyways. I generally only ask about sports scores and weather or conversions, and a few more things.
I think they are both good at different things. Most of the YouTube videos I've seen seem to show of Google Nows speed a bit much. Hopefully what Google Now lacks.. now, it will make up for in later updates, assuming they are not harassed by Apple too much more.
I'd also like to mention that Google Now is not in any way a clone or copy of Siri. Voice recognition and human-like feedback have been strived towards since even before the USS-Enterprises computer did it in early Star-Trek Apple, or anyone recently claiming it was 'their idea' should be shot in the foot.
Didn't Google have to 'dumb' down their voice app because of the lawsuit Apple had against the Galaxy Nexus?

In the foot? I can think of another, less elegant location.
Is does work alot better than siri in alot of ways, then again this stuff was available since froyo. I believe Google said all those features are coming back

They removed local search (i.e., showing apps and contacts, etc., along with off-device search) from ALL on-device search, because it was the integrated search functionality specifically that was the patent that the judge found most likely to be upheld. Not related directly to voice.
But atleast Google now is better then S voice lol, I removed it from my G note.... For some reason it never worked for me : /
I'm getting "network error. Please try again" on my S3

I think it's pretty good, it's very accurate for me even in noisy environments.
It's just not very complex in it's abilities, which I agree with a member above is due to it being young technology rather than overrated per say.
As it's part of my phone and I use it more, I still find Siri far more frustrating and inaccurate. Oddly a series of jailbreaks make it far more capable and I'm wondering if we'll ever see similar hacking on Android.
Somewhat related, I'm just glad Google allows for offline dictation as there's nothing more annoying than a voice assistant telling you it's unavailable because you're in bad service area.

Well, if not for the insanity that is Apple, it would have much more capabilities, but I find it pretty easy to use, accurate, and despite local search, pretty good.
Lolz, why people always believe that Apple make new things every time and now calling this Google now a siri clone.
Having used both siri and Google now, I think both are different and have different strength points and Google now doing more work than siri. Siri is more vocal though.
People think S voice is bad but I have found it more useful than siri and it can do device functions as well which siri can't.

Google now isn't a siri clone and wasn't created to be one. Although I will admit that Google now works a lot better on my galaxy nexus, Google Now is pretty amazing. I love when I'm out somewhere that it tells me how much traffic I will have on my way home and will give me better directions.

As somebody already said, the voice recognition is accurate but it just doesn't give you 'local' results. I tried to get it to display a book I have in Play Books or music in Play Music but it wouldn't open those apps. I use SpeakToIt Assistant, which seems to be much better at playing your music, reading calendar, sending SMS's (on my Sensation), etc.
I think it runs better actually... Tried it out next to an iPhone 4s and asked them both the questions at the same time and my Gnex blew it out of the water

The OP complains mostly about calendar integration...which I agree ought to be included. It will, however, schedule reminders using alarms. I hope this isn't yet another patent issue....especially since voice commands have been in the works for years on multiple platforms. Heck, back in the 80s I had my Amiga executing various commands by voice...even telling me the time using Majel Roddenberry's voice after a 'computer. Time please' command. I programmed a bunch of voice commands using AREXX.
I find the voice feature very useful. On my galaxy nexus I asked it to call home depot and it called the nearest store and offered navigation and eta. It really makes for the ultimate hands free navigaion/calling system. It responds very quickly as well.
I would like it to SAY more. And I would pay good money if it sounded like Majel Roddenberry.

I know that for people in the UK you have to tick the box for it to search from Google.com opposed to co.uk, otherwise it wont bring up pictures and certain cards (as answers to questions).
Also, change the language to english (US) to get the cute female voice opposed to our British male, ha.
But overall, nothing like the Youtube video where the guy asks 74 odd questions on Google Now. When i try, it just searches the same question...
It seems like alot of One users out there are not that keen on blinkeed, and would prefer to disable it, and for some if given the choice would rather have it removed it altogether. I have to say i like the look of blinkfeed, even though i do not own the One at present.
Is there anyone who actually likes blinkfeed, and finds it to be a useful feature??
Reason i have started this thread that there seems to be quite alot of negativity surrounding blinkfeed.
Would be very interested to hear what you guys think.
I plan on having blinkfeed as my central home screen, with regular android widget screens to the left or right.
When I need some quick info, I can either look @ the lock screen or blinkfeed, when I want to check my calendar or emails, or w.e. quickly I can just scroll left or right.
So - ye I am excited to try it out. If I end up being disappointed, then so be it. But I don't think I will be.
I like it, it's just a news aggregator for content your interested in.
Why would you not like it? It's brought up loads of articles I would of otherwise not of seen, I wish you could integrate things like BBC News etc for the UK but for the moment it's very good.
I don't get why loads of people are moaning, if you don't like it set a different screen as your 'home' but I happen to think it's a very useful function and find myself checking it quite a lot throughout the day to see 'whats new'.

I dont mind it but it doesn't update facebook or twitter properly. The apps will give me status that people have posted that the blinkfeed doesnt till later on. Thats annoying.
I use friendstream widget a lot more than i have the energy to check Facebook or Twitter apps so i expect to like blinkfeed
i just hope it includes (@connect) notifications for twitter

You will have to scroll right, because the Blinkfeed screen can't be moved. It is the first screen and that's it, any other screens you have come after it.
Definitely needs more feeds from BBC News / Sport etc. And you'd think it could tell the difference between football (soccer) and football (American)...

i always had both a 4x4 friend stream widget and a 4x4 reader widget on my phone, so im really looking forward to using blinkfeed.
it definitely needs more options from what I've heard though, cant believe bbc isnt in it!
I think that as soon as more feeds and options become available to view, it will be more popular. At the moment though its just a drain on the battery imo xD
Have to say I love blink feed so much that I have hardly used Flipboard since Friday.....it's a brilliant feature and as long as you set it up properly can be invaluable like today, didn't know Gears of War reviews were out till I saw that in the feed......normally I would have to get that info from a deeper source/app......I find it a brilliant and genuine innovative tool......
AW: Who actually likes blinkfeed?
I like it

Apple iOS reserves a whole home page just for a search bar and I see no one complaining or even talking about it but when HTC does something better with the same home page people start moaning about it. You don't have to use it and if you even don't want to see it, it's Android, just install different launcher. OMG people are just so weird.
I like it a lot. In fact it's one of the features I like the most.
I don't get why there's so much dislike on it, I think it looks great. I use Reader a lot (probably the most) and would love a fancy, good-looking way to get my feeds.
I agree though that the user should have the option to disable it. Don't like when things are forced upon.
Yeah I'm in the same boat as almost everybody else on this thread. I like BlinkFeed and I've stopped using other similar services (i.e. Flipboard, Pulse, ...) almost completely.
People don't like change I guess. It's amazing how they form an opinion before even spending 2 seconds with the product. If it were up to consumers, we'd still be using rotary phones...
I'm looking forward to it. I just hope it's customizable enough and has enough sources I'm interested in. They say they'll be opening it up to a lot more content so that sounds like I won't be disappointed.
I dont even use it lol.
I like it, i use it as my main screen.
I don't dislike it, but i don't really use it, i would like to get used to it, but i would like it as the middle screen of my homescreens, so until that is changed/fixed i will continue with Nova Launcher for now.
I just set the second 'home' screen to become my default home screen so whenever I start to use it more all I have to do is sweep to the left.
Updated the Android auto app today, now it looks like this
Anyone else having this issue?
Yeah I see the same thing on my Headunit app.
LOL. Android Auto is not yet ready for prime-time.
Talk about distracting...
Cheers Good to know its not just me then.
Looks like they took a massive step back not forward with this update
Nice work on the Headunit app btw
Actually, it's not entirely random, for me at least.
I see my email on the screen.
This version is marked "dogfood" instead of "release".
"Dogfood" means that Google employees are testing their own software in their real life probably in their cars. Some expression about "eating your own dogfood".
Google screwed up I think. Maybe this version is "water-marked" so that if an employee leaks pictures they can be identified. But such a version should never end up on Play for everyone.
Same comments on Play and another site; I think everyone with the update is seeing this.
So I had the XZ2 for a weekend and sadly I have decided to send it back.
It seems its got too many things I dislike.
The bogus medley of Sony apps and Google apps.
The fact that an SD card cant be combined with internal storage.
The fact that Themes are just a wallpaper.
The awful Phone app
The redundant Video/TV app.
The fact you can't hide apps you don't use.
So yep sorry guys I'm out of here...
Meet you on the One Plus 6T forum!!
And believe me if I could have got a good deal with HTC U12+ that's where I would be but I can't find a UK deal anywhere...
HTC it seems wants you to buy the handset outright and I can honestly think of a lot more interesting things to do with £750!!!

With my HTC's (One X+, Mini, Mini2, M7, M8, M9) I could hide apps I don't need..one springs to mind, the BBC Media Player...its just needed for the iPlayer and Radio player to work, it in itself does nothing so I hid it, also stuff like Root Cloak etc...
But with the XZ2...well lets just say I really don't like the half attempt at a Skin or Sony OS.
The phone is Google!!
The OS Skin on HTC is awesome.
I could root, yep but that wouldn't help me with the Icons or the text under icons..
The list goes on....I love Sony, I really do but they have a lousy design team on android.
Bogus: ADJECTIVE
not genuine or true (used in a disapproving manner when deception has been attempted)

Ups, I mean you can hide them.
Only a few core apps are unable to be hidden.
You are sounding some kind of aroused.
Please keep calm, it is only a piece of technology.
I prefer the Sony XZ2 because of the open devices program and its high durability.
So it will be up to date and still damage free in 6 or maybe 8 years.
(My usual smartphone lifetime is several years long and I prefer to use LineageOS to be up to date.)

I hear you, and maybe, I changed the launcher but I never like 3rd Party software over original OS.
I think what really blew it for me was the White Phone Dialer turning to Black after I dialled (!!!!) Why would it do that?
And the SD Card memory not integrating with the phone memory...
And yeah I love HTC but the UK has screwed me on getting a Pay Monthly deal on the HTC U12+ it just doesn't exist, in fact the only HTC deal I could find in the UK was with EE for the HTC U11 Life....which isn't worth a bean.
So I had a play on a One Plus 6T today and liked it, well everything but the one speaker!!
So I have had to compromise.
Well bye then and dont create threads after threads !!

Actually themes are not just wallpaper, you can change your navigation buttons and colors. You can search for Theme Creator which is a official theme tool for Sony, you can customize the buttons, colors as u like.
e.g. ur favorite band's logo as home button
