Sony official statement about screen scratch protection - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've read a lot of thing about the screen and wasn't sure about what to think, so wrote a mail to SONY's support team.
Here's the answer: (use google to traduct, it's in french)
http://pastebin.com/iqXM7cZj
In short, there's a tempered glass still with an ASF that is not scratch resistent.
The ASF enhance the precision (accuracy) of the screen and make it more responsiv (responsiveness)
If you remove the ASF, it voids the warranty.
Hope this help some of you to decide what to do (buy a tempered glass to put on top of the ASF or remove the ASF an let the original tempered glass ...)

Don't rate the answer of a support team member as an official Sony reply, he/she might not even be an employee of Sony.
There's actually no ASF on the Z3 series to the best of my knowledge. If so, it's really really durable.

I would also be amazed if there was an ASF protectors.
People that broke their front screens can tell us whether there was a protector or not. I'd say no.

Right it could be nice if some of those who broke their screen told us about an asf present or not.
Where did you get the information about the z3 got a tempered scratch résistent screen ?
l wonder why there are after market tempered glasses if it is already a tempered one on our z3? Any opinion ?
Last question, did you found some scratch test vidéo somewhere ?

Sonys answer. Removal of the anti shatter film.

Was reading it last night on the Vodafone Australia Google + page.
Be warned, also warranty maybe different in your country. Confirm with Sony in your country

Unbelievable.
They create a glass phone and cover it in plastic
Still looks and performs much better without it. I'm happy i removed mine.
It only breaks warranty if the damage is a consequence of you removing the film.
Meaning if your screen shatters you can't say I want a replacement because you removed the protective layer (but you wouldn't get a replacement even with the protector on anyway).
Total baloney, loads of people removed theirs from other Xperias and had no trouble whatsoever. The Z is no different.
Glad I did it, screen feels so much nicer to the touch.

Yes, screen feels a lot better. And... Phone looks better too, which is why i bought it partly for. For the look and design. (+performance too) :highfive:
Nothing there that is not already obvious, if you remove the film and then drop the phone causing the screen to crack of course it won't be covered under warranty, but then even if the film was on and the same thing happened, that wouldn't be under warranty anyway.
The only slight problem is if you do as they say and break the waterproof sealant while removing the film and then decide to drop the phone in water, but you'd have to be pretty clumsy to remove it that viciously!
So if you want the film removed go ahead and enjoy the different look and feel, I'm pretty sure most of us are going to be careful with our phones all the same
I'm just curious as to whether anyone thinks leaving the film on might slightly reduce the chance of the glass cracking to start with.
I doubt it, and if it did surely the difference would be minute.

Drop with layer = contained crack, replacement via insurance.
Drop without layer = crack & shatter, replacement via insurance.
Remove it, it looks/feels sooooo much better without.
Decided to remove both films - glad I did!
Phone look indeed much better, doesn't attract dust, less fingerprints, better responsiveness and even better screen IQ.
:good:
But the Sony Logo will be gone if you remove it, right?
Won't there be much more Fingerprints on it? Heared the Screen doesnt have an oleophobic coating?
Neither does the film.

no, sony logo will be part of the glass. someone else confirmed it in the other thread. the photos you see online are the pre production models.
btw, most companies saying stuff like it may or will void your warranty when you removed it and blah blah.....sometimes they just want to scare you. They dont want you to remove it so they dont have to deal with it. just saying ~

I haven't seen anyone say that, every single post I've seen where people say they've removed it say the logo has come off on their new phones...
My SONY logo came off with/was printed on the pre applied layer.
Not bothered.
I removed it on the back.
It feels much better now, but there are much much more fingerprints visible
I dont want to imaging how bad his would be for the front

Read with understanding...
They will not repair your device if you take it off and damage the phone in a way that is a direct result of that...
If the internal hardware is faulty, they won't look at your screen and repair the phone.
If you'll damage the screen though ( crack, broken glass pieces damaging the screen itself etc ) and have the film removed - they'll most likely deny your claim.
If you decide to take a safety measure off - don't blame Sony if you damage this particular part. It's obvious, it's understandable, it's perfectly fair.

Dropping & cracking a screen isn't covered by warranty anyway.
It's accidental damage, not faulty equipment.
Therefore, removed or not, it's a repaired screen or replacement Z either out of your own pocket or via insurance.
Guys you are missing the point here. If you break the screen with or without plastic film warranty won't cover repairs in either case, but it will be much easier to shatter screen without protective film. Same amount of force which is enough to shatter unprotected screen won't be enough to shatter screen with film on it.

I thought the film had no effect on its force resistance, just that the shards if broken will be kept safe and not shatter everywhere.

For those who took the ASF!

Yesterday finally removed the ASF of my Xperia Z! Was scratched! Turns out I noticed that removing, there is another film on the glass! It is clearly visible in ambiantes bright and can easily feel relief with my nails!
Does anyone know tell me what this would be another film?
I do not have camera to take a photo, but I'm sure there is another film on the front glass!

No, No, Guys!
I know that is factory installed on the device ASF! I do NOT applied any film over the ASF! After much searching, I plucked up courage and removed my ASF!
Removing the ASF, my device lost the Sony logo!
My girlfriend and I can clearly see that there is another film on my device!
I can feel the relief of this film with my fingernail!
I tried to take a picture with the Xperia P my girlfriend but the device was unable to focus!
The staff removed the ASF removed this film together!
I removed ASF with my fingernail!
I'm afraid to try to remove this supposed film and damage the appliance to be something on the sensitivity of the touch, the reason why I decided to ask!
Guys, I'm seeing right now my device! Really you can clearly see it has another film that was under the ASF! Looking in curved detail of the speaker you can see the film pasted wrong!
My brother will have lunch at home tomorrow and he will bring his DSLR for me to take the photos!

It really is very strange! I even thought that came not as a extra film in the device box, Sony would have put on the device itself! But it no makes sense to put under the ASF!
Looks like I have 3x films over my glass then
Awaiting photos.
Did it peel straight off or did it leave residue? From what's bee said on the other threads it's baked on to the glass so seems really strange that you would find another one underneath it.

so we have no scratch protection its just films on films on films

So ... Some employees of Sony say will void the warranty, some employees say they do not void the warranty. Anyway, only void the warranty in relation to the screen, however if it breaks by misuse, anyway would not have access to warranty!

Matte Screen Protector for ZR

Hi all !
I just bought THIS screen protector and just loving it.
I was worried about the fitting to the screen but the precision laser cut was very accurate, fits exactly to the screen.
I applied it myself for the first time, it is magnetic(does not leave adhesive residue) so you can always remove apply it correctly. The matte finish is just excellent
It is for Indian users but the seller said they import these from abroad so the same brand can be found on international sites too.
I got a clear screen protector and i like it better than matte finish.

Hi guys, just got my ZR and I'm loving it but it's quite the fingerprint magnet. Is there a screen protector that can help. I have set my eyes on this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vikuiti-A...ting_LaptopAccessories_RL&hash=item51b125bc05 but I don't know if it's any good. Any suggestions?

Thank you, for your suggestion I got 3 matte and 6 clear screen protectors I will see how it goes and which I like best. Has anyone removed the pre-installed protector from their device. I'm concerned that I'll remove the SONY logo if I get rid of it (I hear that happened on xperia Z units). Is there any danger in removing it and should I remove it at all or just place the new one on top of it?
Place the new one on top. Doesn't dampen sensitivity too much.

matte
At first didn't like my matte screen protector...
Pros
feels nicer!
no filthy finger prints!
minimal light reflections..
if you use dim backlight it really helps..
you can re apply it.
no air bubbles at all!
Cons
unable to use it as a mirror when screen off.
colours and images on the screen are not as sharp,
slight glow on whites.
But now i wouldn't go back!
I'm still waiting for my screen protector and today I noticed a tiny scratch on the screen. It's not that visible but is there a way to fix that. Will the screen protector cover it or I'm stuck with a scratched SONY?

Take a pencil eraser and rub it off..
It should not be the screen itself. Sony is known to apply screen protectors on each phone in-manufacture. It's not visible but if you insist you can remove it. It's even possible that the sony logo is simply printed on it, like the Xperia V.

Removing the anti-shatter film will invalidate the warranty.
Seriously?? How could this void the warranty? It has nothing to do with the hardware and doesn't affect the device in any way!

Yes, there are a lot users talking about it, removing the shatter-proof screen protector voids the warranty because it'll no longer be shatter proof.....stupid isn't it? I already scratched mine before knowing that, now I'm stuck with a scratched screen until my warranty ends and I remove the f****ing thing.

I can't really say I haven't researched this, what I know for sure is that this protector is factory heated onto the screen and it's not supposed to be removed.
Hi,
I'm trying to find a screen protector for a whole display, without any holes in it.. I found this: amazon.de/dp/B00K1JTIMG/ but of course, I'm not sure if it's a picture of a real product or just illustrative picture. can someone confirm / recommend something else?

You are right. The protector is factory-heated onto the screen, remove it and the Sony logo will go off. As for the warranty, there are two paragraphs Sony could use against you if you remove the protector (as stated by the Important information brochure):
Do not paint or attempt to disassemble or modify the product. Only Sony authorized personnel should perform service.

Additionally, "What we will do" section, says:
7. Tampering with any of the seals on the Product will void the warranty.

I know it is not very specific, but hey, that's how lawyers do it.
The only thing I always wonder about, is what kind of glass ZR's screen uses... GorillaGlass? DragonTrail? I found many different sites talking about that, but none of them had conclusive evidence. Sony's official response is ZR uses a "Shatter proof and scratch-resistant glass". No specific brand mentioned .
Anyway, I bought a good protector for 5 bucks. It's a "KLX Anti-explosion Soft TPU 0.2mm Screen Guard Film" and the package includes everything you need to apply it successfully. Also, I saw a 1mm tempered glass protector for 15 bucks, thinking of buying it next time.

I took it off both my Z and Z1. The sony ASF has an adhesive on it which I think affects screen quality I mean how can't it. I find I have better contrast without them. Plus the phone looks more monolithic without the sony logo. But there have been discussion about loss of warranty once you remove it.

you are not alone, many of us have wondered why they do this. Every other manufacturer seems to have this anti shatter built into their screens. I'm not sure if its because sony doesn't use gorilla glass or some thing. The only this to remember that after you remove it the glass doesnt have an oleophobic coating. The ASF also leave a kind of stick residue. I use nail polish remover to get it all off. Then put a glass screen protector over top of it to give the that coating.

I'm interested too. I do not think will void the warranty unless you destroy your screen.
My question is, once you remove it what will you apply on your screen? I tried every good film screen protectors and no one is really oleophobic and without reducing the screen quality. Also seems on the market there aren't films or tempered glass without holes for the camera and sensors which I think is very annoying since they'll become dust magnets. Suggestions?

No better contrast, not even better or precise touch.
But XS don't have Sony logo on SP it's on the glass... I just applied invisible screen protector from eBay (applying with water) and I still use that phone...
But I won't peel SP from Z1 - I just applied same protector (Invisible SP) front and will soon apply one to back and it's awesome...
For me, there's no reason for peeling original SP down...

We asked a Sony rep (or a community manager) in french forum and that's what he told us.
Now I guess it depend on the service center or the country.
Also I don't know if it is the same policy for T and the Z line (waterproof, all glass etc) ?
Anyway maybe I'm wrong but I still won't take the risk.

yes, it may be country specific but I have the same contract on my Z1 as I did with my T
Plus unlocking the bootloader definitely voids warranty so if you have done that you may as well take it off
I asked on sony xperia twitter account, we'll see if they reply.
For the BL I just report what's on their site, the use of "may void" is different of just "void", I guess they have a tons of advocates who carefully pays attention to each word used on their site.
I remember a while back reading something about Arc S (here on XDA) where they said that if the repair has nothing to do with the BL unlock then the warranty still works.
If your T was unlocked and they repaired the screen for free that means warranty worked even if the screen has nothing to do with BL unlock...?

Back cover replacement

I did a search about the back glass here on xda, but I haven't found what I'm interested in, so here goes.
The back glass of my Xperia Z is cracked. Since Sony support in my country is practically non existent (never got an answer from them about the free replacement as this is a known issue) and with my warranty being over, I decided on buying a back cover replacement from ebay. I came across a lot of entries.
So the first question is has anybody bought those relatively cheap ones for around $7.50? It seems to me that those are the same as the ones being sold for €20-70 (and I'm not willing to throw my money in the wind).
Second question is, do those replacements come with adhesive tape or anything? If not, what should I use to glue the cover to the phone?
The last thing I'm interested in, though it's not really important, is there any way of making the phone waterproof again in case of back cover replacement?
If anyone has a video/text tutorial on how to replace it step-by-step, please do share.
The NFC Antenna is integrated into back glass on the Xperia Z.Those cheap battery doors may not have the NFC antenna included and without the antenna, you can't use NFC.As for the adhesive thing, just ask the seller about it!(Its gotta be there in the description). If you install the back cover properly with the official sony adhesive, then it should be waterproof(Checkout some Xperia Z disassembly/assembly videos and guides to figure out how to do it correctly).
Thanks for the reply.
I don't use NFC so that's not a problem, even though I read somewhere that you can basically just peel the thing off and stick it to the new cover.
well, yeah you can probably just take the nfc antenna from the and install it on the new one
but then there is the whole other thing of quality. The back glass on an Xperia Z is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass and is made from high quality materials.Im not sure that you can get gorilla glass on those cheap back glasses from ebay,u have to get an original part for that.
EDIT: I have checked multiple sources and it is confirmed that sony uses gorilla glass for the back glass and dragontail glass for the front glass(what idiot came up with that idea?).
As far as I know, Sony don't use Gorilla Glass, nor have they ever used it. Regarding the Sony glass quality. Well, guess what. It broke. So there isn't much to talk about. The quality they offer has proven to be mediocre at best.
And like I said, I don't use NFC, and I'm 99.99999% sure I never will, so that isn't a problem.

Yeah, thanks.
Found this, but judging by feedback, it's not waterproof (no seal around mic). I'll go with this. I really don't want to give €50 just to keep the waterproofness.
Edit:
Well, seems I answered to my own questions. The only other thing I'd like to know is other people's experience with these replacements.
