Sorry if this question has been answered but I can't seem to find a straight forward yes or no. I want to root my ONE but keep the current ROM. I just want to root to uninstall the Sprint apps and make a few other minor tweaks. After I root will I have to go through the phone setup process and restore all my personal data from a cloud backup?

Yes, the root process will wipe your phone, as far as I know. Rooted mine when it first came out though so the process may differ now.

... If bootloader of your phone is already unlocked, no harm will be done on rooting. When you unlock bootloader, it wipes all the data ...

Hi guys, I know if I root the N1 I won't lose my data, but does this also apply if I have Gingerbread installed?
And secondly, if I root, then backup, then flash a new ROM, can I restore my data (app settings, SMS, bookmarks, home screens, etc.) into the *new* ROM?
you only have to lose data and wipe the first time when you root. after that you never have to worry about losing anything again as you just backup when you switch between ROMs. titanium backup is used by most of us. mybackup pro is another one.
Thanks but right now I am unrooted. Is there no way to root without losing my current data?
Gingerbreak and the various derivatives (apk, and I believe an updated Superoneclick) let you root without losing data, though there is always a chance that data loss could occur even with those methods...
Thanks. Could you forward me the link to the simplest, most reliable method, suitable even for noobs?
Look in the general section cuz I saw paul2000 posted a guy for newbs

Paul's guide is pre-Gingerbread, and out of date. This is better, just make sure you follow the instructions:

Thanks - yes I hate all the out of date stuff on here that never gets updated. This is why people don't 'use search' - it can't be as trusted as asking the question again, up-to-date.
Your link did it - thanks!
I see one click root, etc, for this phone. I also see the scripts for removing bloatware.
How safe and stable is this software at this point? What are the chances of bricking this phone or getting it stuck in a BL?
Do we have a sbf yet?
Pretty safe. Yes there's SBF for XT862.
The root & script methods are pretty solid too
cool cool, just nervous to root my brand new phone and remove the bloat. You say its safe I'll take your word.

It was the first thing I did after charging my droid 3 (and I can't send it back because I'm in Europe)
I did:
1) Run one-click root
2) Make nandroid backup
3) Run debloat script
All went 100% smooth and I was done in 15min and I'm android noob
Well most roms get rid of a lot of bloatware. But i personally dont run those "scripts" i just use an app called titanium backup. U can freeze apps, make backups for them etc. Its the safest bloat removal option in my opinion. Have fun rooting!

With titanium backup? how

You have to buy the paid version. Well worth it in my opinion. I used it on my Samsung Captivate. Not one Android phone should be with out it.
Sorry if this is noobish, I came from a droid incredible and this is my first motorola. Is an sbf file similar to an RUU file? RUU basically flashed everything, system files, radio etc. Basically, it brought you back to stock just like the day you bought it.

Hello guys, I am writing because I need some advice. Since HTC has abandoned this smartphone, I decided to root it to my girlfriend and install a custom rom updated. The only major problem is that of data of the app: my girlfriend plays a lot with smartphone and would not want to lose the progress made in all these games. I would then do a backup with titanium, but unfortunately only works with the root. So I wanted to know if there is a method to rootare the phone leaving all data intact and original ROM, in order to make a backup with titanium and then install the new custom rom. If so, how? Thank you very much!
Rooting won't lose any data or apps. You can go ahead and root it first, then use titanium backup. =)
you are sure? I have to make the unlock of the bootloader ...

full backup of the phone require an app like titanium backup. Unfortunately those app generally require root privileges. Btw contacts are normally saved to your google account. You can backup your user preferences and app settings with htc backup. You can also restore app from google play store. You can backup all your media directly on your pc.

after you unlocked bootloader and flashed a custom recovery, make sure to make a nandroid backup of your phone before starting to flash stuff. So if something goes wrong you can restore from that backup. Make sure also to make a copy of that backup to your computer.
beware that when you will unlock your bootloader.......it will wipe your apps......just do some more reading before starting......cheers!

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup
this is an app to backup ur apps. Install the program on ur pc nd back up. the backup will be created in a folder called Carbon in the root of the phone internal storage. MAKE SURE THAT YOU COPY THIS FOLDER TO UR PC COZ THE INTERNAL STORAGE WILL GET WIPED AFTER A BOOTLOADER UNLOCK
To backup call logs,
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.CallLogBackupRestore
Just drag nd drop the media to ur PC(music, pics, movies, etc.)
If anyone like me, reading this way later...
There seams to be some apps that doesn't allow Helium to backup it's data. App tells you to ask the individual developer to allow backups for the app in question. I did it anyway, because none of the apps that was disallowed had data you'd want or shouldn't backup. Mostly banking stuff and some secure conversation apps. There are also a bunch of apps just failing to backup...might be something I did wrong...
Im sorry if this was already posted elsewhere...but I cannot find what I am looking for. I even checked the sticky and under (root/temp root) there is nothing listed.
I have an HTC One M7 with T-Mobile. It is running slow and I want to wipe it fresh and get everything reinstalled back on. I do not currently have root and I am trying to find a way to root or temp root the phone so that I can use Titanium to backup game/app data.
Every thread I read says the phone will have all the data wiped to obtain root. Is there any way to get root so I can backup my data first?
Thank you for the help in advance!
Yes but go to question and answer section to ask that

rooting will not wipe your data, however in order to root you must have the bootloader unlocked, and if your bootloader isn't unlocked then unlocking it will wipe your data and factory reset your phone, if this is the case for you then your best option is to download Helium from play store and backup all your data including game data to cloud, if you backup to internal storage, be sure to copy it to your computer before unlocking, as unlocking will also wipe your internal storage.
next, unlock your bootloader at HTC dev if not already done, skip this part if your already unlocked.
then flash TWRP 2.6.3.3 ( I know there are newer versions, but this is the most reliable and stable)
enter twrp recovery and backup your rom, upon exit it will say you are not currently rooted, do you want to install root, simply say yes, this is the easiest way to root.
you will need to complete the root setup upon booting into your rom and update the binary file, its all automated, just follow the SuperSU installer when it pops up, and when given the option to update the binary file, select automatically update in TWRP.
