[Q] size of ext4-partition of my S3-mini ? - Galaxy S III Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

* Can someone explain what the ideal size of the ext4-partition must be.
The s3-mini has 4 gb memory, so i thought that 1 gb extra on my sd-card would be nice. However i noticed that my ext4-partition of 1 gb was completely full. I have a 8 gb-sd-card and i use the wonderful PAC-rom from tenshi_xp.
* Does it make any difference if you have a 16 gb-sd-card and makes it any difference what the format is of the ext-partition: ext2 or ext3 or ext4?
I know that there were some rules with my former wildfire-S about the size of the ext4-partition. Then I used INT2EXT+-script from cronmod which worked good.
However i have not read anything like that about the S3-mini.
* Is there a site or link where i can read about this.

I don't have answers for all of your questions, but first, you have to use EXT4 for better compatibility on sdcard partition
Also, don't use INT2EXT if you've got a small partition as those scripts move all of your internal memory on sdcard, thus making your external partition useless and full
I suggest you to use Link2SD app instead, since it allows you to choose which apps to move on ext4 partition and which not and doesn't move anything from your internal memory, granting total free space for moving 50MB+ games and everything else and faster performance
If you use Link2SD, 1GB should be enough as I have a 2GB partition on a 64GB sdcard and installed like 130 apps and 40 games
Also, use FolderMount for games with obb files, so you can free up even more space on internal memory!

Captivate memory layout

It seems to me that the memory layout on the Captivate isn't in line with other Android devices.
Looking at the specs of the Captivate on www.google.com/phone I am seeing:
RAM: 512 MB
Internal Storage: 16000 MB
Yet in looking at "SD card and phone storage" in settings I see.
Internal phone storage, Available space: 1.60 GB
Internal SD card: 13.03 GB
It seems to me that the 16000 MB is partitioned so here are my questions.
1) Where is the 512 MB and what is it for?
2) Why is it if I install some app that is supposed to show me external SD usage it always instead shows that 13 GB internal flash volume?
And in a broader sense...
3) What is the general memory model for Android? I see RAM, Internal, External. What are they all for?
I'm not sure, but of that internal 16gb of storage space, is it merely partitioning a section of that away for the OS?
That is my question. I don't understand the memory model.
This might not be accurate since I don't own an android phone but i'm bored
1) Where is the 512 MB and what is it for?

System Ram, used by the OS and apps as volatile memory.
2) Why is it if I install some app that is supposed to show me external SD usage it always instead shows that 13 GB internal flash volume?
Click to collapse
Because the 13gb volume is the "general" volume where you can personally store whatever you want, it functions just like an external Sd card would.

Ram - It is for the OS and apps, they need that as volatile storage to function, nothing is really stored there in the long term, the OS manages that so don't worry about it.
Internal memory - This used for many things, app install and to store files like music, pictures, etc. Internal memory is usually partitioned so that you only have a set amount (probalby that 1.60 you see ) for apps install and the rest if for whatever you want(the 13gb).
External memory - That is just an SD card you can use to expand your internal memory, right now (Android 2.1) it only works to add more space for files(music, photos, docs,) but with with froyo (android 2.2) you'll be able to move installed apps to this external (and the internal 13gb) drive.
Ok here's how it's laid out.
Yes, we have 512MB of RAM. However we as the end user will only see around 300MB of that, give or take 20MB. That's because some of it used by the OS and the GPU for different tasks.
That 16GB of internal storage you see, is partitioned off. We actually get around 13GB to use for ourselves. That 1.6GB you also see starts off as around 2GB (I would assume), and the rest used by the system for the OS, apps, cache, etc...
It's just like a hard drive on a computer in that respect. Sure you but a 1TB hard drive, but you actually only get to use around 850GB of it due to formatting and whatnot.
My problem is that I cant install apps in the 13gb partition, I dont know why..
I tried with:
adb shell pm setInstallLocation 0 this is Auto mode but.. installs in 1.8 partition
..........................................1 this install on the 1.8 partition
..........................................2 this install on the sd card
..........................................3 doesent exist xD but i tried..
so does exist any way to install apps for default in the 13.3 internal SD card partition, or any way to errase the partition??..
Try using "apps2sd" from market. It should be app2sd or apps2sd.
But I don't understand the need to do this, given that Captivate has one of the best memory amounts allocated for system.
Also note that, the apps on SD won't be available during the times when apps like "media scanner" are running.

Setting up a2sd, partitioned 1gb ext3 on SD card, only 152mb memory available a2sd?

I am totally baffled by this. I've had a2sd working once before, but this time it just won't work. I flashed cyanogen 6.1.1 for my phone, Nexus One, and added google apps by flashing that too, and the rom works fine.
I have partitioned my SD card with 30gb FAT, 1.1gb ext3, 60mb swap and the rest free. I then flashed darktremor. Now, when I open titanium backup pro, I see the bar for a2sd showing free space, and it says 152mb total, 20.2mb free.
Why do I not have the full size of my ext3 partition available?
What can I do to fix this?
Thanks guys
I have the same problem! Before starting a new thread I thought of posting it here,
I partitioned SD with Amon RA recovery (2.0.1) first with EXT2 and converted to EXT3
I have similar amount of memory, 138mb ! Isnt the partition made with recovery detected by the ROM?
Details : Fat32 3.5GB, EXT3 512MB
Look HERE the internal memory doesnt show the memory in the EXT partition. But apps get installed in there when you install them normally. Just check if your A2SD+ is working by the Quick System Info market app.
I read the whole thread A-Z, I suggest newbies do the same to get an understanding.
EDIT: DATA2SD shows this as the internal memory!

[Q] Low internal memory even with ext enabled

I all, I do have all my apps installed in ext partition (and I'm sure of it, since I'm able to wipe weverything but the ext, apply new roms and find my apps already there).
I expected almost free internal memory, but I get the low memory warning (20MB and under...). I suspect that moving apps to ext doesn't clean internal memory. Is this correct? If so, how can I free some space? Should I delete apks manually from data?
Try entering this in Terminal Emulator:
su
lib2ext 1
Then reboot
Ok, I got 126MB of free space by moving libs. Thanks for the hint.
Anyway, when I try to move apps from sd to internal I got an Insufficient space error. I'll try uninstalling and reinstalling thos apps
How big is your ext partition? At least 512 MB is necessary. But the latest CM10 builds appear to require more than 768 MB, I'm using 1 GB in my ext partition.
I have 1GB ext partition on my card and had no problem with it.

repartition internal block device

Hey I know this should probably go under Q&A, but After I get the awnser I will post howto and directions. Mainly I wanted to repartition the pre-install, and maybe the data, and maybe cache, and maybe even the osh, and internal sdcard.
1. Would like to install a webtop mod on internal memeory not using external sdcard, to do this would need to repartition internal memory.
2. Would like to resize cache partition remove 300+ MB, change data partition remove 1GB, change internal memory remove 1GB, change pre-install, and osh remove any exsess memory, probably 300+ MB, wich would give me around 3 GB of memeory freed up internally. I would also like to remove any exsess on system, but that isnt nessicary. if I am able to do all of this, and remove excess memory on system the remaining memeory on system would become a swap partitoin
3.create 2 new partitoins internaly after the last partion on your device, normaly is the internal sdcard, would be a 3GB partition and a 100-200 MB partition, the 3GB would be for the webtop mod to sdcard, only now hosted internally. and the 100-200 would be for swap space, I might up the swap space to 512MB and the webtop down 2.5 depends on how this all works, and what I need it to do when I am done.
Please Post some replys, links , and info. I remember someone on here did change the pre-install partition, I also know that the safestrap 1-2.0 remaps the pre-install partiton for the safestrap to stay. please post all info and help me make my device usable on the front line.

[Q] About Link2sd

I have samsung galaxy mini GT-s5570. I have used Link2sd. I have 8gb memory card and allow 1gb for ext4 partition. When sometimes I flashed new rom and use Link2sd to link my applications , after linking all applications it shows free internal storage of 115 mb from 178 mb and EXT4 partition of sd card shows around 465mb out of 1gb. But due to problem I flashed same rom again and installed same number of same applications as previous and links all with SD card. Link2sd shows free space of only 65mb out of 178mb and EXT4 partition shows the only 243 mb filled out of 1gb. After that I tried with changing second partition file system , also format rom about 2-3 times., but the result is same as in 2nd case. What is the problem? because from My 1gb 2nd partition around 750 mb is free and now my internal storage is full. So can't install more app. Can anybody solve it?

Wipe data,sd-ext partitions(system optional). One more thing, even if you use link2sd, the internal storage gets filled up. Because apps keep some data on internal. Better solution is to use int2ext+ in ur case.(If want good performance then use int2ext, but your ext partition should be <500mb. Keep in mind, for each 500mb ext size, you need around 100mb internal storage when use int2ext).
