Please forgive the noob question.
Can I use safestrap to get Lollipop onto my Active i537?
I think I know the answer....
I'm using the stock ATT distro of 4.4.2 with TW4.2 or TW4.4 in the "stock rom" slot in Safestrap 3.75. Experimenting now with Hyperdrive in rom slot 1--having no success. I suspect I'm having trouble with the Safestrap rom slots on the i537; thought the rom slots were fixed with this version of Safestrap, perhaps I'm wrong.
Thanks for the help (and please be kind),

Your issue is you can only use ROMs that are the same version of android as your stock slot. In your case since you are on 4.4.2, you can only use TW4.4.2 ROMs. Until the i537 gets 5.0 and somebody figures out how to get SafeStrap to work with 5.0 on the i537, there is no way you can run Lollipop ROMs.
The reason for all of this is that the stock kernel is protected by the bootloader, so until the bootloader can be unlocked you are stuck with your stock ROM. SafeStrap is able to create a separate space on your phone where ROM files can be stored, however it is dependent on the stock kernel to get the ROM to communicate with the phone's hardware. So until you get a Lollipop kernel on your phone you cannot use Lollipop ROMs. This is the same reason you can only use TouchWiz-based ROMs and not CyanogenMod or AOSP.

This is how you update your i537 to lollipop while keeping root the long and the short of it is safestrap doesn't work with lollipop but that's perfectly OK because Chainfire (maker of the superSU app) made something new called FlashFire that does all the same functions (plus a bunch more) compatible with KK & LP
how do you do custom ROMs

Yes you can flash custom roms with it. Right now the selection is limited, there is only one lollipop rom for our phone, a deodexed, somewhat debloated version of our stock lollipop. From the chatter on that thread I believe it is possible to theme and mod that rom more extensively than stock. (Huge thanks to DUHAsianSKILLZ, out of his own generosity he came over to our forum to help us out when I mentioned our plight on a different forum).
I've been trying to get an AOSP-type lollipop rom boot on our phone with no luck so far. If you're interested in that I/we need someone who knows how to do the symlinking and permissions in an updater-script, and for the love of jeebus could someone tell me if it actually is possible to flash an AOSP rom through FlashFire?

That actually sounds like a very good and interesting idea for and aosp rom, seeing as how xposed doesn't work with stock Samsung (which is a big part of why I rooted) but unfortunately I am not as smart as you, and know nothing of the sorts. I hope you fine d someone because that's a great idea!!

Hello, I've recently come into the world of android. I have always been a linux advocate, however hadn't had the money until recently to buy an android phone. I have Sprints HTC Hero. And believe it or not I really don't like it lol. I mean not android...Android is wonderful! However after i saw the original design of the HTC hero, i felt that i should have been getting that. It just looks better imo.
Anyways! down to business I've been looking into rooting and possibly getting a new rom on this baby. The reason behind this being..i simply want 2.1 firmware, and im sick of limitations on a linux platform....it's just sickening... to even think about that.
Firmware Version is 1.5
Software Version is 1.56.65.2
I have software i've paid for on this phone.... and applications i would want to go through the trouble of RE-downloading..
For example, if any of you are familiar with the latest version of chompSMS I donated to get rid of advertisements....would i have to donate AGAIN to rid of these?
What about better keyboard which i have installed? Would i have to rebuy it?...How about GDE?
I'm sure you get the point of what im asking. How the heck do i save what is mine on this phone before taking the next big step.
Then there is another issue... I've heard alot of roms are really kinda...unstable. I need a phone...that works...most features included. Whats the best Eclair rom for 2.1 or what not. I kinda wanted something like the nexus one rom. But please tell me which one you guys would prefer due to usability...
Finally...How the heck am I supposed to root? Any advice? How am I to flash without losing anything too important.
First, any application you pay for through the market, you will NOT have to pay for again. You simply re-download via the market. All (I think) of the 2.1 roms out now (Damage Control, Darch, Fresh).
If you don't want to re-download, I highly suggest getting "Titanium Backup." You have to get root first, but after that (and I HIGHLY recommend the donate version, its a wonderful program) to run "batch" operations. I just backup all user apps + data and it has worked flawlessly almost every time.
As far as getting root... are you using windows or mac?
Either way... SEARCH. There are tons of guides on this forum, for both windows and mac. It is VERY simple. Took me less than 30 minutes, including downloading the necessary software.
EDIT
This should make it easy for you! They're called stickies because they are ALWAYS there, and you should READ THEM FIRST

Well i'm using a Mac primarily. But i have a windows PC right next to me, and a linux net book in the background here.
I'd prefer to use the mac but which ever is easiest.
By rooting am I voiding a warranty of any kind? Like the boot loader perhaps?
If so can I unroot if i ever had to go to sprint for an issue?

Yes, by rooting you are technically voiding the warranty, however if you ever have to send your phone back to sprint, you can "RUU" your phone back to 100% stock. There used to be alot of errors, leading to "bricked" phones, however this has been solved. So you CAN go back to stock if need be.
I personally have no experience with mac, so I'd say (with a strong biased opinion) to use windows.
I rooted using the "as2root" exploit and it was very easy. I mean if you can type in a command prompt exactly what you see, it couldn't be any easier.
[EDIT]
Here's the method I did for root.

Quick answer about the paid apps is that you don't need to buy them again. Google saves that info on their servers and you can just download them again for free once you flash to 2.1. On the other hand, if you had something like a high score saved on the phone in a game then you are more than likely going to lose that (as my wife recently found out when she reinstalled bebbled)
As for stable/functional 2.1 roms. As of the newest leak that Damageless put out they are extremely stable and fully functional. I'm running Fresh 2.0d and have no problems. I also put it on my wife's hero and she loves it. She was a big fan of fresh 1.1 so when she heard there was a new one she needed to have it. Really, any of the roms based on the newest sprint leak are about equal in stability and you can check out Flipz recent post on benchmarks. You might find a few things removed in a specific rom but generally you can just put them back in if you miss them.
Finally, for rooting there is a perfect rooting guide on this site that I used with no problems. Here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583291 The only thing you could change on that is substitute the latest version of RA recovery image which is 1.6.2. Found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4898505&postcount=1
Once you are rooted and have the recovery image flashed you can do nandroid backups. MAKE SURE YOU ALWAYS DO A NANDROID BACKUP BEFORE FLASHING ANYTHING. Then save it to your computer. This is an image of your phone that will let you go back to that point in time if something gets messed up.
For sms they will be saved in the nandroid but if you want to carry them over to the new rom you should download a program like "SMS backup & restore" from the market. It turns them into a .xml file that can me saved to your comp.
Lastly, if you have personal files on the phone I would suggest making a manual backup to your computer because nandroid doesn't backup the sdcard.
Hope this helps, feel free to hit me up with other questions/concerns.
Ok, finally. I've taken a day to think about it and I simply want too root my HTC hero to get it's full potential...Plus there is pretty much no risk to simply gaining root access...right?. If i do this will i get OTA updates....after all...sprint hero is expecting the 2.1 update in like 2 days.

Bumped: so the quoted question could find it's soul mate (Answer)
Once rooted you will *not* receive official OTA updates.
However, wait about a day or two after an official update and someone on here will have posted a dump of it and someone will have made it better (i.e. compatible with our root exploits.)
Hi,
I already made a topic with this issue but somehow I have a feeling that I posted in the wrong subforum.
Here's the second topic. Are the advice's from there good for my phone that aint branded by any brand or not associated with any brand? I have GT-I9000 for a European market, there's no AT&T here I got a bit confused...
Do you need your data? I would flash an other custom Rom. You should wipe data and system and flash your Rom again with gapps or an other Rom.

I don't need anything to be honest, I just want working phone :3
So the deal is after wiping data I need to install ROM that'll suit to my Kernel, Semaphore that is? And to flash my ROM I could use stickies here on this GT-I9000 forum? Or maybe I should go to my Rom creators topic and just update to the newest version out there?

The first thing you should try is wipe cache and dalvik cache and do a factory reset than reboot. The Rom should boot now. Sometimes you have to reflash gapps.
If you want a stable Rom flash a gingerbread Rom JWB is the latest one with odin. (You can find many tuturials)
Or flash cm10.1 stable with right gapps if you want a fast and stable Rom.

Very good, mate! It should then be easy to fix it (hopefully). The proceeding is easy:
flash clean stock rom
root it
install CWM recovery
After that, you can install zip by some good custom ROM by using CWM recovery (like the newest CM10.2), or flash whatever else you want. There are tons of good stock ROMs for i9000 so you can install all versions of Android between 2.1 and 2.3.6
I send you now link to one of my own recent posts, where only one (of many possibilities) is described step by step. Ceirtanly you could do it also different way, but I am lazy to check if the old links are working, here all the download links worked last week:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44710247#post44710247
I've sent that to one guy to unbrick his phone. Yours is not bricked, so you could flash also any ROM that comes only as one big file (that comes under PDA then and re-partition mustn't be checked if no PIT file is choosen) But you can proceed exactly the same way, it will work, and I SpeedMod kernel is compatible with 2.2 Froyo (also with 2.2.1 that I've tried from that download link) that kernel is rooted and features CWM recovery v2.5xx
Otherwise, you could also flash some 2.3.6 Gingerbread ROM (JV5 for instance) and flash Semaphore kernel 2.7.4, it also has all-in, like SpeedMod for 2.2 is rooted and features CWM recovery v5.0xx

The newest CyanogenMod builds are still in development phase and once they get stable kernel devs (like stratosk etc) will improve it further and create optimized versions of the kernels. Of course, anybody who wants to try JB kernels can do it. Who isn't sure, should wait for a while.
In this moment, CM10.2 nightly build is faster and gives about double battery life than the stable 10.1x with the i9000.
Stand of today is: nightly 20130828 seems to be the least buggy build.
...by the way, could you explain "Backup" function in CWM for me? Does it back up kernel, rom, everything? What does it backup? Lets say I got a new rom - I have to install everything from my lets call it "Google copy"? That "Backup" from CWM only is used when I screw something up or I want to go back to old rom?
Click to collapse
Function "backup" in custom recovery like CWM creates so-called "nandroid backup", which is similar to ghost image of the PC. So whole your system, apps, data, contacts, notes, wallpaper etc get copied as 1:1 image copy. If anything goes wrong in your currently used ROM, (some bigger crashing or similar), just go to recovery mode and "restore" your last backup. You will have your phone on the stand of the moment when you've created backup image.
Only your data stored on the SD card (internal/external) won't be affected / that is also the case by ROM reflashing, except if you choose to format SD card.
Your nandroid backup shouldn't inspire you to take more risk than you otherwise would, because:
backups made by one version of CWM are in general not restorable with another CWM version
backups made with one kernel are often not restorable if meanwhile different kernel was flashed
backups of one specific ROM are often not restorable if meanwhile different ROM with different partitions is flashed
For example: backup made by version 2.5.1.2 that your Froyo with SpeedMod kernel had wouldn't be restorable with CWM recovery v3.x.x.x or 5.x.x.x or v6.x.x.x
So be sure to handle with care your nandroid backups/restore files (files can be copied to the PC, best by copy&past whole folder "clockworkmode")
Besides CWM, there are meanwhile also some other custom recoveries for android devices like: TWRP / Aroma / Infuse toolkit / PhilZ recovery that support list of devices and can create ghost system image that can be restored at any point.

The short answer to your question is that you can't, you're stuck with TouchWiz until the bootloader is unlocked. The reason for this is that the bootloader checks files you try to flash to the phone to make sure they are signed by Samsung. In order to use something other than a TouchWiz rom on the i537, you need to flash a different kernel. And since other kernels aren't signed by Samsung it will fail to flash.
The GPE for 4.2.2 that you are referring to was able to use the existing Samsung stock kernel, so it seemed that you were using an AOSP ROM, but it was still using Samsung's kernel. The newer GPE roms (4.3 and 4.4.2) can no longer utilize the stock Samsung kernel so they are non-functional. Unfortunately since you're on 4.4.2 you have the new bootloader and there is no way to downgrade back to 4.2.2 and use the GPE rom. Your only option at this point is to use the stock rom or find a compatible rom that you can live with until somebody figures out how to unlock the bootloader (hopefully in August).

Oh, that would be nice. Like I said, you could theme the ROM to look like the S5, which is Touchwiz. If not, you'd have to theme it yourself with Wanam Xposed. Hope you find what you're looking for.

so to my understanding I make a back up on safestrap and then I just flash over the stock rom slot?
You're going to want to factory reset inside of SS, then flash over the stock slot. Make sure you make a backup first!

I've been using dynamic kat and love it. 4.1 version should be coming out soon. I tried alliance a few weeks ago and went back to dynamic kat. Nothing against alliance. I just liked dynamic kat a bit more.
Can anyone tell me why you can't flash 4.4.2 ROMs in the rom slots if you are on official 4.4.2 nc2 on the stock slot? From a logical standpoint It would seem as though it shouldn't be a problem. When I rooted and was on 4.3 on the stock slot I was able to flash 4.3 ROMs in the rom slots and it worked fine (since I assume I was on 4.3 bootloader). I don't want to corrupt the official 4.4.2 nc2 stock slot or risk messing up the system if I can help it. That's what got me into this mess in the first place.

Hashcode is still working on the rom slots for safestrap kk. You can create a slot just dont mess with the default size and flash a kk rom in there but there's an issue on reboot. Someone also said location services might act funny.

True. Most ROMs I've tried work in the slots, but some of them won't turn off or reboot. (The S5 port seems to work fine, except for the original S5 password/pin problem in the lock screen.)) But services like Android Device Manager (location, ring, wipe), AndroidLost, Cebrerus, etc., can't contact the phone. And you can "mess with" the size. I run my slots with 2500/3100/500 to make sure I have enough app and cache space. Just be patient.
But you can run the ROMs in a slot to see what they look like, how they run (the S5 port is fast), you can set them up with more apps, a different launcher, etc., and run them into the ground. Then you can back up the one you like (or all of them) and flash it to the stock slot. Once Hashcode gets things sorted out and makes the slots work we'll have a real multi-boot, the way we had on 4.3. Just be patient. (I'd rather wait another month for a Safestrap that works than get one now and find bugs. And ANY software of this size, even if you're not dealing with the constraints imposed by Samsung, is going to have bugs until they're found and fixed. The last person to write large, bug-free code doesn't have living grandparents yet.)
Hey guys do you have some links for themes that are compatible with Dynamic Kat, I'm on att note 3.thanks in advance

Hi,
I haveandroid 5.0.2 stock rom rooted and xposed.
I recently be notified about a "little" Android 5 OTA update. After discussions, i undesrtood that if i want to make this update, i could have to reflash my rom, reroot mydevice, reinstall xposed, etc.., so i think i will skip it.
But if i skip it, will i be notified for "Android 6" ?
Thanks

Wrong section.
This OTA should be the stagefright fix., you will need this update to receive/install android 6. You have to be on the latest firmware to do so. But if you are rooted with custom recovery you will have to go back to stock anyway, so you can flash a firmware including this fix than.

Yes it is a good advice You're talking about "stock" firmware ?
Anyway, to update my phone to this stagefright fix Android 5 OTA and when i will update to android 6 OTA, i will have to flash stock "unrooted" firmware, so i will lost all my apps and data.
With my olders phones i used cyanogen mod to have a "pure Android" with some tweaks, but with my Motorola Moto G 2, which is already "pure Android", i was happy to use "only" Xposed for just the tweaks i want. BUT, i didn't understood that i could'nt update Android whithout the hard process of reflashing stock, reroot, reinstall xposed, reinstall my apps.....
So i'm thinking to flash Cynaogen mod on my Moto G 2, but could you confirm :
-Future update, including big one's like CM 12 to CM 13 can be installed without having to reflash anything and so without lost data ?
-I can install xposed and modules on Cyanogen firmware if i need extra tweaks not included in CM ?
Thanks

Right, without this stagefrigth OTA you won´t be notified when further updates are available.
And yes, I´m talking about stock firmware. To receive OTA updates you´ll have to be on latest stock recovery/firmware and be unrooted.
You find all this things like firmwares http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/development/original-motorola-firmware-collection-t3153533, tutorials to flash them http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/general/restore-to-stock-t287365 or tools to do it automatically http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/development/tool-restore-to-stock-firmware-flasher-t3016236 and this really good one incl. stagefrightfix http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/general/official-stock-firmware-5-0-2-lxb22-46-t3019612 in this index:

So you don´t need to have a nandroid backup to go back to stock.
But you will lose your apps and personal data of the internal memory, you can backup your apps with titanium but basically it´s the hard process.
Even if you use cyanogen mod you maybe can dirty flash the small updates, the step from cm12 to cm13 demands a clean flash and your data will be lost.
Xposed is working on all versions imho, rooted stock, cm or other custom roms. A lot of custom roms have a bunch of nice tweaks on board.
At the end of the day you have to options:
- Flash latest stock firmware and recovery (with the loss of your personal data) and wait for official motorola 6.0, then flash TWRP and root your device the recommended way. Flash/install your favorite tweaks and rootapps like xposed (There is a 6.0 OTA of the brazillian soaktest available, which works on XT1069 and XT1068 but I think that´s not what you are looking for).
- Choose one of the upcoming custom roms based on cm 13 sources which bring a lot of tweaks with it and can be used with xposed also. Some are already available but still have some bugs, you´ll have to decide if it´s worth to wait until everything is more stable (Your personal data will get lost also).
I´m on a custom rom and kernel and I will wait until my favorite rom will be availabe on 6.0 or another one will satisfy my needs as a daily driver.
Hope I could help you.

I would choose this option but if the "small updates : for instance from android 6 to android 6.." are not easier to do that whit rooted stock rom, i have no reason to switch to CM. Yes you help me a lot, but some thing are not clear : advantage/inconvenients between rooted xposed stock VS custom rom : about update process only..
Thanks a lot !
If you are on latest stock rom you will be notified on your XT1068, no matter if you are rooted or not. You won´t be able to install it when you are not on stock rom/recovery and with system changes like xposed.
About updating:
Most custom roms are cm or asop based, so there is no big difference between CM "official" and other custom roms.
In some cases you can dirty flash the small steps (6.0 to 6.0.1 or something like that) which means you have not to wipe your data etc.
A dirty flash is often possible but not recommended because you can have problems like fc´s afterwards or even worse softbrick your device.
In most cases you have to clean flash a new version which always means take the hard road. But I did this procedure very often now and it takes me one evening to set up my phone incl. installing apps, tweaks and so on.
If you chose a stock rom with xposed and your favorite modules the update process is similar to the one on a custom rom as far as wiping is necessary. But you have to do some more work.
You have to flash stock recovery again, full unroot the phone and revert the system changes you made, often the much safer way is flash back to an untouched stock rom which includes a stock recovery. The stock recovery can be extracted from the firmware and is always part of it. So if you flash stock the recovery will become stock too.
The advantage of a custom rom is not just the inbuilt tweaks, they are often more fluid and battery friendly than stock roms, they are mostly pre-rooted and xposed works on the most of them too.
The update process depends on the rom here, sometimes you can dirty flash the small steps, sometimes it always needs a clean flash.
Hi
I've read all your explanations, thanks a lot, all is more clear for me now
If i try to resume, custom rom has these advantages against stock rom for the update process :
-No need to flash untouched stock rom before update.
-No need to reroot after update.
-No need to reflash custom recovery after update.
But both custom and stock rom has these inconvenients :
-Wipe necessary after updates. (sometimes littles updates can be did without wipe with custom roms).
So i think i prefer to choose custom rom, and i think that the best solution for me is to wait a CM 13 (android 6) stable release. Do you think it is a good solution ?
Thanks

Yes, you I think you've got the essential infos.
Waiting for a stable cm13 release is a good choice, but keep your eyes open, even now there are some modified roms based on asop/cm13 that have less bugs and glitches like original cm, Nexus experience http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3143528 as one example or the very promising Viper rom and kernel.:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3261838 just to name two of a lot good projects here on xda.
In the meantime you can try a 5.1.1 rom like minimal os which is rock stable.
But it's your choice when and what you going to try. Sometimes it needs a bit of experimentation.
Good luck!

As you are from france I suppose you have the european firmware on your XT1068 which is the one with "DSDSALL" in it´s name.
Please confirm that in your "about phone" settings (firmware version and build Nr) !
Just for your info: DE stands for germany,BR for brazil,GB for great britain and so on.
So if you are sure that you are on the european firmware the second firmware from above is the right for your phone: RETAILDSDSALL_XT1068_5.0.2_LXB22.99-16_cid7_CFC.xml.zip.
LXB22.99-16 is the latest 5.0.2 build.

Yes, I think the stock firmware in the post above ( RETAILDSDSALL_XT1068_5.0.2_LXB22.99-16 ) has the latest update included. Hi,
I didn't made any flash since our last discussion and i'm always on Android 5.0.2 without stagefright fix. I will choose between CM13 (when it will be stable) and Stock MM when it will be official.
Meanwhile, i downloaded the update by mistake and it prompt me to install it every day. I can only report it but not fully cancel it.
Do you know how or where i can delete the downloaded file ?
