What if we don't want to restore to that backup with the mods installed. Is there anyway to keep stock recovery and do our own mod to enable Ambient Display? Does the Ambient Display work as expected on the Nexus 6?

The back up is purr stock with rooted. The ambient works fine. You cannot restore with stock recovery.
Just shut off the stock lockscreen

Even with edits to configuration files? How do the custom roms disable it? Is there a file I can replace? Is it a custom kernel option or a specific other component of the roms?

It's a option in that particular custom rom.
And no, this has nothing to do with the kernel.

Hi, has anyone made this possible? I know it works for kitkat but I have yet to see something like this for lollipop. Thanks.

What did you do in Gravitybox? You have to goto Lockscreen Tweaks>Background Style and select Last Screen or Custom Image. Then you'll get the blur option. It doesn't appear in default wallpaper

Is there a way to enable Ambient Display in Stock Marshmallow, like it used to in Stock Lollipop?
I know, Moto Display is supposed to be efficient than Ambient Display, but MD messes up when one changes dpi, while AD doesn't.
Thanks
My answer (grain of salt here ) is no , not unless you run a custom rom or possible there is an xposed module or get an app that mimics that feature.

If you're rooted, you can install XPosed and use the App Settings module to keep MD at stock, while changing the rest of the UI.

Did you really manage to get ambient display? Would you mind listing some steps using that xposed module?
Thanks!

I just found the answer:
Just rename MotoDisplay_3.0.apk in /system/priv-app, restart and you're good to go (for example add .bak at the end).
By the way, the AD settings just returned to the Settings>Display after this.
Thanks to @dsnti
I'm using Nokia X2 stock. There are no expandable notifications. Even tried a couple of Xposed Modules, All notifiactions expanded and Always expandable notifications to no use. Is there any way to have expandable notifications on Nokia X2 stock?
[Btw on custom lock screens like HiLocker and AcDisplay there are expanded notifications.]
Any help will be much appreciated.

Well Jelly Bean do support it. 4.1.2 was first to bring them. Yeah, it must be something about Nokia.

Thank you for the explain.
I will try my best to bring back that feature to stock ROM. Follow my work: Simonoid.

Well simply coz its more stable than any custom rom. And I have personalized it a lot. I don't wanna loose all my personalization.

It's hard. Nokia screwed everything up

How do you keep the nav buttons lit up? Who would design a device with buttons that vanish???
By nav buttons I mean the back, home, and square button on the bottom of the phone. When you touch the screen they light up for a sec, then they just turn off. Super annoying when you are say reading a page on Chrome, want to go back, and the back button is just gone.
It is configurable in the settings

What rom do you use?
It is configurable in LineageOS and MIUI

choose "Light up when screen is on"
That setting does not exist

yea, there is no OTA, you'd have to upgrade manually.
Head over to the ROMs sub forum, and you'll find plenty of guides and tutorials.

I'm not sure about the hardware differences between my x520 and yours, if there are any.
But better asking in that rom post.
