TWRP Password - Here is the Answer - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On my Nexus 6 I constantly see the password prompt upon boot of TWRP;however, by canceling it, I was able to flash ROMs, gapps, etc. One thing that irritated me was not being able to do a backup as it kept giving an error about mounting the system. Since the device is encrypted and I used a pattern lock, I figured out that you must type the password in as shown in the attached image...

[Q] Accidentally re-rooted phone after whole-disk encryption, now can't boot

As per the title. I have an S4 Active, humming along happily with "activeroot" applied when it first became available. I realized this morning that I never deleted the activeroot app itself, but when long-pressing the icon to get to the uninstall menu, my finger slipped. I really like geohot and his work, a whole lot, but the fact that there isn't at least a confirmation screen before overwriting important system files really grates on me. The instant the tap happened, the screen went black, and became immediately stuck on the AT&T logo at reboot.
If I power the phone up normally, I only see the AT&T logo for as long as I care to stare at it before powering it down. I can reboot into the stock recovery, but because the phone doesn't ask me for the disk-encryption password as in a normal boot, I see the error "Can't mount /data (Invalid argument)". The only non-destructive thing I could do at that menu was to wipe the cache, which obviously did nothing for my bootloader or encrypted disk. I feel pretty sure I haven't lost any data on that encrypted disk yet, and I know I could do a full factory wipe, but I'm hoping I have a better option:
1) Could it possibly be as simple as trying to send "towelroot", the newest root, to the phone via adb and execute it?
2) Without the ability to write to the disk, can I get a log file for further troubleshooting / ideas?
3) Is there a way to decrypt the disk over usb to at least pull over any non-backed-up files before performing a factory wipe?
4) Can I install a different recovery which might give me more or better options?
Thanks for any help you can provide! = )

[Q] TWRP asking for decryption password

I've flashed the Kali Nethunter .zip on top of the Chrome ROM. It didn't boot correctly and after that I wanted to go back to TWRP and restore my back-up. And it suddenly is asking for a decryption password. When I fill in: "default_password" it starts decrypting with alot of error messages.
Mainly being: E: Unable to stat /data/xxx/xxx/xxxx. xxx
When it's done it brings me back to the TWRP screen. I'm able to access /system but not /sdcard or /data.
Does anyone have an idea?
Is default password your password or the twrp default password?
MAybe you should reflash your ROM.over usb and see if it boots.
You said "did not boot correctly" vs "did not boot"
If you can get into your system, turn off lock screen passwords and your phone will not require a password to decrypt at boot, and TWRP won't need a password to access your userdata partition.

How to make TWRP forget my password?

I have a Moto X2 with Android 6.0 and TWRP 3.0.2
I just turned on full disk encryption and set a pattern screen lock.
The first time I enter TWRP, it asked me for the pattern. However, after that, when I reboot into TWRP, it doesn't ask for pattern anymore.
I can't find any option about forget password or ask every time in twrp.
I am afraid others can just enter TWRP and copy my files through ADB or MTP. So is there a way to solve that?
BTW. I read the principle of Android full disk encryption. I guess TWRP already stored my master key somewhere, but I can't find it.

XT1900-7 no permissions in TWRP

Greetings.
could not really find anything within this forum that would describe my problem adequately, so I will just ask here, hoping someone had the same.
I recently received this device (XT1900-7), successfully unlocked bootloader and went on to boot and install TWRP.
Booting it temporarily is childs play, but doing anything else within TWRP seems to be pointless. Flashing the TWRP installer results in a bootloop when trying to access TWRP.
To flash LineageOS 16.0 a persistent installation of TWRP is not required (right?) so I really do not care that much about it failing to install properly, I will be just fine with flashing LineageOS from the temporary TWRP.
Here comes the trouble though. I have not yet tried to wipe anything, as I suspect it of not working properly in my case.
Trying to run a backup, something I always prefer to do before wiping and flashing anything, is not possible due to permissions error - it fails to create the TWRP folder. I am also unable to push anything via adb to /sdcard and the contents of /sdcard are rather confusing. There are folders whose names contain random numbers and letters. Checking inside these folders shows that they seem to have an unlimited amount of subfolders.
Opening a terminal in TWRP (as well as adb shell) throws linker warnings (/system/etc/ld.config.txt seems to be missing for /sbin/toolbox) about it being unable to read said file. It does so with every command I submit to the shell.
When I unmount /data I am able to push to the device (though still not to /sdcard - again missing permissions).
Also when switching to slot B it gives me "Error changing bootloader boot slot to B" with "Failed to mount /vendor (invalid argument)".
Relevant data:
I have not done a firmware update, it is still running on Android 7.1.1 and I do not intend to do an update since the stock rom is to be replaced by LineageOS anyways.
As mentionend: XT1900-7, 64GB mmc, 4GB DRAM and so on...
I am able to push files to /tmp for example which allows me to flash the twrp-installer.
Edit: TWRP version is the latest available (3.3.1-0)
Is there anyone who had similar issues and might provide help?
No need to ELI5, I'm at least experienced in Linux, not that much in Android. Previous phone was a G4 Play which was pretty straightforward (unlock, fastboot flash recovery and flash away whatever I felt like).
If you need any more information I will be happy to provide it.
Thanks in advance to anybody that can give me a hint or clue to solve this.
Well. Nvm. It works flawlessly with twrp-3.2.1-1. Seems to be something with latest version. Thx anyways

Cannot retain Recovery Image

Greetings All,
I recently was given a Moto G6 (XT1925-6) that I am having some issues with.
I have unlocked the bootloader, and attempted to install the TWRP recovery, using fastboot (On Linux).
The installed recovery partition (twrp-3.6.2-0-ali.img) will boot once.
If I boot the system, the recovery partition appears to be cleared
('no command' appears when selected).
Any ideas what might be the problem?
Also, where is the 'Hello Moto' boot animation kept?
It USED to be /system/media/bootanimation.zip.
Removing this file does NOT stop this major annoyance...
I Also note that TWRP cannot mount DATA (asks for password).
I CAN format DATA from TWRP,, but as soon as the system restarts,
DATA gets re-encrypted, and can no longer be read...
Thanx.
Richard Rosa
Ok, figured out that a custom BOOT.IMG was needed to keep the recovery from being zapped.
Created one using Magisk and that solved the disappearing TWRP.
Also, any suggestions on how to get TWRP to be able to mount the DATA partition?
I tried setting a screen lock PIN in the OS.
This resulted in a number pad (rather than a regular keyboard) appearing in TWRP.
However, TWRP could not unlock using this pin.
Still have no idea where the 'Hello Moto' is being loaded from...
Thanx.
Richard Rosa
