whenever I place a call; I can hear a small faint noise 'sssssss..' from the earpiece speaker. this happens when in calls and when I run the earpiece speaker diagnosis test.
when the speaker is off; there is utter silence.
I've had the phone with me for 7 days already and today is the first time I noticed. I dropped the phone at a small height into a tiled floor (but with a case on) and there wasn't any damages or scratches.
I already updated to the latest 23.0.1.A.5.77 but the same issue persists
I checked the bottom speaker and it has the same problem.
Is everyone else's phone ok?
False alarm! the sound was gone when I went outside my room and house. Looks like there are just a lot of signal disturbance inside.

What has the earphone test have with signal disturbances? As long you are not near some pretty heavy magnets, speakers, microwaves running, the earphone test should be irrelevant to the signal quality inside the house.
I would say you just don't hear it outside.
Let's say the average sound level outside is about 60db or above where as inside its 30-40db.
It is pretty logical that you wont hear it outside, doesn't meant its not there.
Best if you wanna proof your signal disturbance theory, go outside in the late night, 2am or so, when outside is almost as calm as inside and test it again.
Sorry for revival an older thread, but there is not many ppl out there caring, or hearing, or noticing the static noise by themselves.
Also test your Microphones via the service menu if you could.

Annnnd you are correct; I'm in a different quite room now (office) and I'am still able to hear the hssss sound when on a call on the ear speaker.
The built-in 'ear speaker' test that plays the ringtone has the same problem. Although if i play the same test and used the sony headset (that came with the phone) I don't hear the hss sound; it is crystal clear.
seems like the problem is definitely with the phone ear speaker... aw... I'll just have to ignore it or use a headset.
the microphones are working fine.

Whenever I'm gaming or something and my phone rings, I instantly pick up and balance it between my ear and my shoulder when i talk (you know, like old school phones when multitasking)...
But whenever i do this people say i sound like I'm talking in a tin can...
Is the second Mic (to drown out background noise) to blame?
make sure that mic isnt blocked. if you put it on your shoulder it will happen

People have actually asked me what kind of ****ty phone/reception I have because the audio quality is so bad.
it may be a bad mic. have you always had this? maybe you should call gtc because all the major phone reviewers noted the nexus had one of the best quality calls of any phone. it should not sound that bad
Mine sound great at least. I know this since both me and my brother has a N1. Really good sound quality from my experience.
I've read this same issue before on the Google Android forum. Apparently it has something to do with the secondary mic and how the shoulder conducts sound thereby activating the noise cancellation of your own voice.
I also talk this way and don't have this issue atleast no one complaint.
I am waiting for my warranty replacement due to come in today.
Will report if that fixes it.
Have you guys tried using like a bluetooth headset or wired set to see if it's really the mic issue?

Thats the conclusion i came to... guess i'll start looking into a Bluetooth headset
Upon receiving my second HTC one today (I RMA'ed the first one due to quality control issues discussed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwOu5oXpjVQ ) I find that this one have something loose inside of it, somewhere around the area of the upper speaker or the camera (camera works I've checked it). And it makes this Rattling/buzzing noise every single time a put the phone in my left palm (or by lightly tapping the upper part of the phone), quite annoying after awhile... It's not from a loose power button nor the volume keys. I also tried pulling out the simcard tray as well, and the noise persists.
I never noticed this on the first phone. Are you experiencing any of this? This can't be normal, right?

I'm having a buzzing vibration from the top speaker when playing sound through the speakers (music, video, etc. but not during call). Definitely something vibrating under the speaker grill with the sound waves of the speaker, particularly at the frequency of a male voice talking. I'm about to contact HTC for a return. Very frustrating because the rest of my phone works great. Now I'm worried about getting a refurbished unit with other problems...

Got mine RMA'ed, second time now. I haven't received a refurbished unit as of yet.. But I'm not in the US and rma's are handled a little different (we do it through the retailer as long as there is any warranty left). Got a new device last time, and I'm expecting that is what I will be getting this time also.
Has anyone observed speaker crackling above mid-volume? My top speaker has a buzzier character that gets more noticeable as you play louder and bassier/fuller sounds. I'm not sure if it's crackling or something rattling inside the case. The lower speaker sounds clear and normal.

I made a short recording to show what I mean. The sample is from plugging in my magnetic cable a couple of times. The charging sound is particularly annoying to hear crackling.
I may have to send my unit back to Clove for warranty service. Bummer.
I have the same issue, and yes, it is the charging sound that is the most annoying, it sounds exactly the same as yours, is if something is loose inside and vibrates.
Until now I was willing to live with it since apart from that I love this device... until yesterday evening that is, when I realized that also the gyroscope calibration is way off (when trying to play Doodle Jump) and there doesn't seem to be a way to do a system-level calibration of that thing anymore. There used to be in older Xperia models in the service menu. Now I'm thinking of sending it back, which I really would rather not, having already configured everything to my liking...
As the subject states.
I'm noticing my bottom speaker is massively louder then the top speaker when playing music and when in call on loudspeaker.
I test by simply covering one of the speakers. The effext is very evident.
The top speaker is very low compared to bottom.
Is anyone else noticing this or has my top speaker failed on me?

I'm noticing the same thing. Balance seems to be off.
If you have had it like that since the beginning you are most likely experiencing the same problem i had.
When the phone was built in the factory, a small plastic piece above the speaker wasn't removed correctly so it muffled the speaker. It went under the warranty cause it's a a problem from the factory

Which is weird.
I say normal. Because I just ran the rest on my girlfriends z3c and she notices the same low sound from top speaker.
Lame.
Gonna go test this is store on the demo models see if this is indeed normal...
Tried the demo model in store today I can confirm that both top and bottom speakers provided an EQUAL level of sound (when playing music at least.)
Unlike my phone which has clearly suffered over time through no direct fault of my own.

My phone got really quiet during phonecalls 2 weeks ago. I have the slight feeling that I got a software update in that timeframe, but since I can't pinpoint either, that might be coincidence (unless others have the same problem). I also noticed that before while watching videos, you would get the feeling that the sound came from the middle of your phone (and had proper stereo), while now I notice pretty obviously that the sound comes out of the speakers near the USB-C connector..
I've also confirmed that everything is fine when I have a call on Bluetooth Headsets or on Loudspeaker, so it seems that only the speaker next to the front facing camera is affected.
Anybody else with similar issues? Makes phonecalls without bluetooth close to impossible in any crowded area.

Check your audio settings anyway. Leave it on music, seems to help and check if mono is turned on in accessibility.
If like me you blocked up your earpiece grill, then get a toothbrush and get it clean, no water just (light) stabbing motions and circular whilst pushing against it .
For me it was what worked.
The main speaker (bottom) I would avoid pushing anything in there at all, but compressed air would work as it should.
