I'm trying to do a hard reset using volume/power keys but cannot do it for the life of me. I've tried all variations from doing searches but just can't seem to get it to boot into recovery mode.
Any help much appreciated.
Button next to micro sim
there is a small recessed orange button located next to the nano sim slot. Take a paper clip and push the button and hold it for 3 seconds. Your phone should vibrate 3 times and fully shut down.

That doesn't boot into recovery mode or do a hard reset though, just seems shut the device down.

I'm a Z1 Compact user (my Z3C coming soon!) - not sure how relevant this is for Z3C, but for Z1C, there is no stock "recovery" to get into. Only Flashmode and Fastboot mode from the OFF position. Maybe Z3C is the same...
If by "hard reset" you mean, to wipe the phone and start it fresh, can you do it via the settings? (Settings -> Backup & Reset)?

I've found the hardware wipe to be more comprehensive than the software wipe. For example, when I wiped my Z3 Compact in the past to try and clear a camera fault, some of the Sony (cr)apps weren't there after. I had to send the handset off for repair (camera fault still there) and it's come back with the firmware reflashed with some of the tat back - specifically the Xperia Now bit when you swipe up the home icon.
Maybe flashtool is the answer?

I've searched the forums, and can't find a report of anything similar...so this might be new...if it isn't, help locating a thread would be great.
- Downloaded Blackberry connect install cab
- Seems to install fine (log looked good before reboot)
- Press "ok" to reboot device, but upon reboot, the device screen is locked at the Windows Mobile screen
The unit seems to be operating fine... I can receive calls - the phone rings, the caller ID pops up, but it stays on top of the Windows Mobile boot screen...
The power button will not shut the unit off...only turns the locked screen on and off
Battery removal and reboot freezes at same spot.
I had deselected all the ActiveSync options including the 'connect via USB' option... and now can't view my device from my laptop...
I've had the TILT only a couple of days...I'm running the stock ATT Tilt ROM & software...added two themes (night palms and the planet reflection ones)... have a 6G microSD card with some songs, pictures, and a device backup...
Looking forward to your suggestions & solutions!!
I tried it on mine and it did the same. So I gave up and did the hard reset and started over without even attempting to install the bb connect.
after hard reset
thanks for the quick response...
the hard reset worked fine...
I repeated the bbconnect setup, this time installing to the device instead of to my card... everything worked fine.
How did you do a hard reset on it?
hard reset
a hard reset will wipe all your data and set it everything back to the default status...it isn't supposed to clear anything on your sd card ... i take mine out anyway.
to do a hard reset, hold both the soft buttons while pressing the reset button w/ the stylus (the reset button is on the bottom edge under the hard OK button )

One thing the instruction did not say rright was to hold the two soft keys and then press the reset then release and wait for the screen to give the instructions. Well the real way is to hold all 3 and wait and the process will be on its way.

this is just not working for me, how long are you pressing the stylus in? how long are you holding the buttons?
When I do it I get the AT&T logo screen (a short vibrate) then it continues to the windows mobile boot screen. I can never get the prompt to erase all data. I've tried the procedure a dozen times, no luck.
Make sure you are pressing the soft buttons and not the 'call' and 'end call' buttons as stated on some sites. Hold those and press stylus into reset until it turns off. Continue holding the buttons until the message comes up.
I've just had to do this for exactly the same reason!
I had the same problem on my Touch. After the hard reset I have found a solution: install application to device memory not on storage card. That helped me and now BB Connect is working fine.
I can't find any info about hard resetting X2 anywhere... Isn't it possible on this phone? I need to reset the user code...
Edit: Solution was to update the phone with SEUS. It lets you reinstall firmware even though you already have the latest (unlike normal SE phones).
While the phone is powered down:
- Push the two front skinny buttons down simultaneously
- While doing that, *briefly* press the power button (ie don't press and hold it)
- When the screen with instructions comes up, you can stop pressing the skinny buttons
- Follow instructions - basically press 'r' on the keyboard when it asks
EDIT: My bad -- thought question was about X1
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, that does not work - it just boots up normally.
Have you tested this yourself? Is the SE logo supposed to show up?
And the "skinny buttons" - are those the call/hang up buttons? Are there four buttons on the front, or only two? (i mean, is there a button both above and below the short line sticking out, or are they just one button?)

He was asking for instructions for the X2. Are they the same as the X1's?
theres a small pin hole on the back under the battery cover. top left just under the camera. seem to remember reading in the instructions that its some kind of hard reset. not sure if it will do what you require. youll need a pin or tiny screwdriver...

I've already tried holding the two buttons while pressing it (like on X1), but that doesn't work. And the instructions manual says nothing about hard reset - only soft reseting using this hole.
The closest thing i have found is this article about hard reset:
http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/support/phones/detailed/toperformahardreset/x2/xperiax2?lc=en&cc=en
But the problem is that it misses the only essential thing: how to do it...
I think the only known way is: settings\system\clear phone memory. It resets the phone to factory default. The button in the whole is only a soft reset button like in case of X1.

But my problem is that i can't start up the phone. When booted, it just brings up a numberpad. I assume it's asking for a personal code, but it doesn't say anything (that must be a bug!), and there's nothing happening when entering a code and hitting OK. So it's hard to know what it really expects me to do...
I'll try to update the software using SEUS, if that's available for this phone model.

clear phone memory definately restores to factory default. i bought my phone on ebay so used that setting when i first got it. took about half an hour while it reset everything and completely re-installed all the software.
doesnt really help in this situation though. yes you can update via SEUS, the X2 is one of the first ones that come up on the sony update software. but if youve got the latest firmware update i dont think it will let you do anything. it will just say no newer update found and exit.
have you tried starting it with and without a simcard? daft question but is it unlocked? maybe you have wrong network simcard. that can sometimes bring up a keypad on some phones.
if its definately unlocked to any network did you try the standard lock codes?
i.e 1111 or 111111 or 1234 or 123456
I downloaded SEUS, and it let me update the phone even though it already had the latest firmware. Now everything works fine!
My SIL needs me to wipe her GS4A before she sells it. However the screen is not working at all, which is why she is getting rid of it. How can I wipe her phone before she sells it?
I have a feeling it's going to be tougher than what I would run into on my Nexus 4.
Thanks
might be impossiable

if she has lost all touch control you can try booting into recovery via (vol+ home power) and choosing factory data reset
you should be able to do so without needing the touch controls

That sounds perfect. However since it isn't my phone and the display isn't working I'm not sure how to select factory reset. Can you tell me what combination of button presses would accomplish this?
the best i can do

ok these buttons should make it to where you can do it with your eyes closed...parden the term
pull the battery to make sure the phone is compeletly off then put it bak in and hold (vol up+home+power) for 5 sec then wait about 10 sec then enter....
vol down x3
power x1
vol down x7
power x1
that should start the restore then its just a waiting game...sence you have no screen then there is no way of tellin when its done
I went to the beach recently with the Xperia Z1 C6903, and after coming back from the beach, the camera on the phone keeps on opening by itself.
I then decided to reboot my phone, through using the power off, turning it back on method, only to discover my phone is now in "safe mode", which disabled me from using my third party apps.
I then proceeded to search the web for a solution; using the clear cache (volume up + power button), and the red button inside the sim card slot, to which none of them worked.
After this, the phone sometimes cannot operate correctly, as the power button is sometimes disabled (as well as the volume down button). The power button issue can be fixed through the red button inside the sim card, however the volume down button does not seem to work.
I tried factory reset, nothing seemed to have happen apart from me losing all my data and apps.
I tried to flash the stock rom, which I have in place on my phone atm, again, through flashtool, but did not seem to get an answer as safe mode is still on, and the volume down button seems to be dead.
Upon further investigation, I realised that the camera function is also affected by the safe mode, as the camera cannot focus on objects, and the camera button on the Z1 is working, but cannot take a picture (can semi-press and use camera's flash via this way).
I am now leaving my phone to dry, assuming that there is still water inside the phone which is preventing the normal function of the volume down button as well as the camera (and sometimes the power) button.
If anyone has a solution, please respond, and :fingers-crossed: I may have this fixed without going to the Sony service store.
Never take phone to beach...Salt +metal= you know the combo
Try to flash full FTF to see if the software is the problems or just open the phone
Or send it to Sony..........
Shutdown the normal way, then turn on.
Safe mode will disappear.
Never heard that the phone were stuck in safe mode even after a full wipe.
i have the exact same issue ,is there any solution please ?
Same exact problem
I have exactly the same problem, if there is any way to help please post it.
Hi, so my Z1 had a dying, practically dead battery inside it (it was plugged in nearly 24/7 until I got a new battery) and I left it unplugged for an hour, not plugged in. When I got back to it as soon as I turned the screen on it died (not surprising because the battery was dead), however, when I went to plug it in and turn it back on it wouldn't turn on, and furthermore my portable charger wouldn't recognise it. When I got home I left it to charge from the mains for about 4 hours, with still no response. I've tried pressing power+volume rocker(every combo), holding down the red button and the power button with still no response. Not even a glimmer of the notification light. The only response I can get is plugging it in to my computer where it's recognised as a malfunctioning device. It's running Cyanogenmod 12.
Is my Z1 completely dead or can someone give me any pointers? Looking at other posts almost everyone has said just try some button combo and it's worked.
Thanks!
EDIT: I'm leaving it on charge overnight and seeing if it's going to work in the morning/when I get home.
Are you able to enter fastboot mode or flash mode at all?
Try holding volume up or volume down while inserting the micro usb cable and see if you get any notification light response
No response.
Hello
Here are the latest solution. who has succeeded with my xperia z1.
are you ready to disassemble your xperia?
did you try this ???

Generally speaking, it may helps recover that disassemble and assemble the parts properly. BUT it surely will break waterproof function.
Did you test magnetic charging too? If not, give it a try to make sure.
In a sim card tray, there's a reset pin. Pressing it a while soft reset the phone forcefully.

I pressed the reset pin multiple times, all that I can think to do is take it apart. Will it work temporarily without glue so I can check if it's working?
