[Q] phone will not ring on nexus 6 - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

our nexus 6 has done this three times now. randomly fixes itself, then loses its ring tone for a week. Bell Canada says we should bring it back for 'repairs" ? I think this phone is a dud. the trouble started after lollipop upgrade. did anyone else have this difficulty or knows of a fix? I don't want to give up our phone for a week to have it 'repaired' D

Are you on wifi when it happens. I'm on Sprint and there is a bug when on wifi we will miss calls.

Satan's for responding. Sadly it makes no difference whether wifi is on or off. No ring tone. Incoming calls show up on the screen only. Incoming called is announced on a wired headset. Still no ringer on Nexus 6. Pathetic piece of hardware. Cost over 700 from Bell.

Nexus 6 not ringing
THANKS for responding, not Satan's. Darned autocorrect. Sorry about that

[Q] Sounds not working

I've got the Samsung Captivate not even 30 days used and just yesterday the sound for calls stopped working completely. when I make or receive a call I can't hear the other person and they can't hear me and there is no dial tone during the calling process. The speakers work fine, the microphone works fine and the speakerphone speaker all work fine I have no idea whats causing this. If anyone, anyone at all, could help me figure this out. I've tried resetting the phone as well as hard reset. I've messed with all the settings and am running everything stock except that the phone is rooted which was done 2 weeks ago so obviously not the problem. I've googled this for 2 hours and looked everywhere and am getting sick and tired of this. Please if anyone can help me I would be more appreciative than you could imagine. Thanks.
It's difficult to say what exactly is causing your loss of sound with only phone calls. I suppose it could be a number of things. I read the software update AT&T is pushing out this week is fixing some issues such as that; however, from just looking at the forums people are having major trouble with that update. The easiest fix I can think of is to turn up the voice call volume. During you next phone call use the volume rocker to turn it up. It may have somehow been turned all the way down. I hope that helps.
Yea i tried the volume rocker, I am just going to return it to the store since it's still in the first 30 days. I can't figure out what the heck it is, probably just a defect :-/
I tried unrooting it, reseting to factory defaults, and still the same problem. The speakers work fine for music, the phone is in amazing condition and everything is fine, it's just the darn voice calls, incoming and outgoing just don't work, the other person gets the call and it registers but no sound comes out. Just wondering if anyone else has encountered this before I go back to the at&t store, it's quite far from where I live and living on campus makes it a bit hard to get there.

Well, I just got the same problem too. I was unable to listen anything on voice call and the other person can't hear anything too but the call is connected. I noticed that I could make phone call and hear the voice call but as long as the call ends, I can't hear other person if I make another call again. Please help. Thanks!

Can't hear callers and they can't hear me.

I have a rooted Captivate running 2.2 stock. It is also unlocked and I am currently using the phone in the UK with a pay as you go sim card from Orange. I therefore updated to 2.2 through Kies Mini. All was well.
Then all of a sudden, I would make or get a call, and could hear nothing. Not even the ringing as it was connecting to them. And on the other end of the line, they couldn't hear me either. It is as if the Captivate was connecting the call, but the rest of it'd hardware (mic and speaker) was turned off.
This doesn't always happen, probably 1 out of every 2 calls. I've learned that by restarting the phone I can normally make a working call. However, sometimes, all I will hear is muffled static, as if the sound coming from the other person was all distorted. I will hang up and call back to no sound whatsoever.
I'm really not sure what the problem is, it's very odd. Everything else functions as it should.
Any suggestions? Many thanks in advance!
Try going back to stock and starting over? It sounds like it is something with the software since it was working before the update.

Sense 6 bugs

Hi everyone, I 've just updated my HTC one to 4.4.2 / sense 6 and I have noticed a serious bug. During the day in some of my calls I cannot hear anything, and by that I mean that I can't even hear the calling sound when I make a call. After three tries everything back to normal. Does anyone else have this problem?
Also when I turn on data and GPS my phone gets extremely hot! This was a problem and before the update and I wish that they would fix it... That's all so far
Thanks!

I definitely think the crackling is a software but and not a speaker hardware problem. I have the same issue, but it's only intermitten. And there are two or three other threads on here about people with crackling issues with lots of replies. I am hoping a fix may come down the road.

It's pretty embarrassing when I pull out this brand new device that sounds like it was dropped in water or someone tried to clean the speakers and messed them up. Cmon software updates!

there was another thread on this i replied to, but someone mentioned they had the same issue. some people have it with the top speaker, some with the bottom. I get crackling in the bottom speaker... In order to not hear crackling, i have to press the volume rocker down 7 times which is insane.
i contacted Google via Google Play store and they are shipping out a replacement after some initial troubleshooting. The rep i spoke with advised it's not normal for crackling and it was the first she had heard of the issue.
One of the forum members in the other thread mentioned they got their replacement and compared the two side to side with someone else in the room just so he knew he wasn't going crazy. The replacement was 100% working, no crackle. Also he advised the new device shipped with the latest firmware on it so it would seem new batches are getting shipped...
ill be receiving my replacement monday and ill try to come back and post results.
Hope this helps!!

Yep same here. I've got my sms tone set to "Elara", and sometimes it starts ok and then gets severely garbled. It's almost as if some other background process is interfering with it. In fact I wouldn't mind betting that's what it is. Also sometimes when I send a viber or a fb messenger message it misses the first half of the sound it makes when you hit send.
Definitely something not right with it, and I agree, for a brand new 500 quid handset it's not on.
I am having the static/crackle issue with my calendar notification (doesn't always happen and I can reliably play the notification through the menu). I have posted a video of it on YouTube. This doesn't seem to be a hardware issue to me as it plays fine other teams and other audio (such as watching music videos) seems to play without fault.
Am not permitted to post links, but here it is with a minor edit.

I too have this issue.
I have already returned one phone and I still have the exact same issue with "new" phone. Even after the 5.1 update.
Intermittent crackling/garbling/static and occasional popping of some but not all notification sounds. I can not predict when it will happen at all.
I have the crackling too. Got my phone 1.5 weeks ago.

Can't hear nor can other person hear during call?

So I'm on my 11th day of using the Nexus 6. I have 14 days to exchange the phone through T-Mobile if there's any issues. So far, no real hardware issues with the phone.
Here's my issue though. It's so random I can't figure it out. When I'm trying to call someone, the dialer dials the number, reaches the contact, but I can't hear the ringer and I can't hear anyone talking on the other line. The person on the other side of the line said when they answered the phone, there was no sound or voice from me - it was just dead.
The ONLY way I seemed to fix it before it does it again is to reboot the phone and calls will be normal. My question is, should I exchange the phone? It shouldn't be hardware, right? It sounds to me like a Lollipop issue but I don't see anyone else with this issue. Please help as I want to make up my mind whether or not I should swap for a new Nexus 6.
I'm running stock unrooted and locked bootloader. Thanks.
EDIT: I'm on T-Mobile too.
in for update please
same thing would happen to my wife's nexus 6 too. happens sporadically. don't know what causes it. doesn't happen often. hasn't happened with my nexus 6 yet. i have the blue 64gb and she has the cloud white 64gb.
notice the same thing happening with my father's nexus 4 a couple times too. only way to fix both phones is with a reboot.
thinking that it is a software issue and hopefully will be fixed with the next release of Android 5.1 since that is supposed to mainly be bug fixes.

Are you on T-Mobile? I ask because I think my issue was more an issue on T-Mobile's side. My friend has an iPhone 6 and he had the same issue - it was T-Mobile's cell tower. I'm not 100% sure this was the reason because I still had to swap out my Nexus 6 when I originally posted this because of hardware issues.
Same problem here, answer an incoming call I can't hear them, they can't hear me. Rebooting the phone fixes the problem but only for a few days , then same again.
I'm on AT&T and had this problem yesterday, got a VM from my daughter's school saying there was a 2 hour delay and couldn't hear it (ended up seeing it in my e-mail instead). Then I tried multiple times to make/receive calls same thing. Rebooting the phone fixed it. I wasn't sure if it was a bug since I rooted or not. I've only had my phone for 6 days.
This has been driving up the bloody wall. I hope they fix it soon! Anyone got any ideas?
Guys, if you have to reboot the phone to fix the issue, I would RMA or exchange the phone. It could be hardware since it's happening on different carriers in different areas of the world. I'm on my third Nexus 6 and everything seems to function fine now.
I actually fixed mine by blocking the noise cancellation speakers at the back of the phone below the camera. If the nexus 6p is in a case all you need to do is cover the noise cancellation hole in the case and you will be fine and if not in a case just cover it with a tiny sticker
Having similar issue on Nexus 5!
Problem: When I call or receive calls - I cannot hear anything --- unless I switch to loudspeaker or use a headset.
Furthermore when dialing I cannot hear the connection sounds --- unless I switch to loudspeaker or us a headset.
The others can hear me! So - the microphone works.
I can record and play audio & video - no problem! So the microphone and the speaker do work, somehow not always! Vibration works too.
----------FIXED
P.S: I just got it fixed: It turned out the earpiece speaker contacts were bend and the sticky tape did not hold the part down. After bending the contacts and taping the earpiece down (alternative a small piece of paper to force / hold it down did the job!)
The earpiece contacts only presses upward against the board contacts of the Nexus5 (and 6 likely)!
Currently: Nexus 5 / Nougat 7.1.1 / Nitrogen OS / rooted on TWRP 3.0.3.0 recovery
