Is it possible to disable system update check? Looking to stay on 4.4 for the time being. I tried following a procedure for the Nexus 5 but the services don't appear to be the same.
edit: figured it out. rooted, disabled moto OTA services. sweet SWEET kitkat.

guys
on a verizon nexus 6, who provides OTA updates - verizon or google?
also, if I root the phone and use xposed, will I be able to get ota updates or should be avoided?
Thx
Google, but Verizon have to approve them first.
No, you cannot OTA with any modification to /system, including root.
Xposed is in alpha testing. It's for experienced testers only. Only use it if you are very familiar with recovering devices and proper bug reporting.

You don't have to wait, you can download LYZ28E, that's what am using without any issues.
And am on Verizon.
has anybody been using xposed and is it far more buggy than simply putting a ROM like chroma on?
Also, is there a dedicated xposed link for nexus 6 on xda or any central page or is this my only resource
http://repo.xposed.info/module/de.robv.android.xposed.installer
Thx
if you are rooted and want the OTA you have to do a few steps to make it work.
flash the stock system image of whatever build you are currently on. just the system image, nothing else. grab the OTA zip file then sideload it. once sideloaded, reroot the phone.
Just restored my N6 and am getting ready to sell the phone, I will be turning on the hotspot feature, and need to make sure that the phone does not notify or download OTA's - I do realize that's why we have our Nexus' but the person that I am selling it to can't sideload OTA's himself. He will be giving it to me periodically to upgrade and doesn't want to be bothered with the notifications... is there an easy way to do this? Thanks!

I do not, just flashed fresh M. I am not opposed to rooting, what are your thoughts?

well, if you do ever get an update notification, you can always long press on it then turn it off.

I do not want any notifications to appear...
Unless things have changed in Marshmallow, but I am pretty sure disabling notifications from Google Play Services disables the OTA update notification. I don't remember what else this gives notifications for, but there is probably something you may be blocking as well with this.
With Lollipop and above, all OTAs check for modifications before installing. Root and/or the changes you would need to stop the OTA notification would make it so you can't install an OTA. You would need to flash the factory images, then re-root and make the changes to stop the next OTA notification again. So this would be a bit more work on your end to install an update for the owner.

Yeah - I am aware that OTA's check for mods... What about disabling the "SystemUpdateService" - I know that would require root, but has anyone else had success with this?

I found this guide to rooting[NOTE: see below]. And then I just heard the news that the Moto G6 is confirmed to get a Pie upgrade. A couple of questions:
If I want to root, should I do it ahead of the Pie upgrade? Will my rooting be preserved? Will rooting cause trouble with the upgrade?
Will the upgrade likely break the rooting method?
Thanks!
NOTE: Apparently this forum censors Droid Views links. I inserted a space in the URL so the whole thing doesn't gets *'ed. The page title is "How to Unlock Bootloader, Install TWRP and Root Moto G6" in case you just want to Google it.
Updating will not keep root and will probably break things if you have root while updating. In fact, you'll definitely not be able to install an update if you've got TWRP installed in place of stock recovery.
If you've got the patience to wait for Pie to come through, I'd say wait for it.
After the update to Pie, will the same rooting process work? Or will there be a new process?
Is the update to Pie something I have to approve or initiate? Or could I wake up in the morning and find out my phone already updated?
Thanks so much for the help!

The same rooting process should work in theory, granted root solutions such as Magisk have been updated to support Pie.
You usually have to recieve the notification and then initiate an update on any Android phone, but I can't tell you about this one in particular because I haven't received any sort of update since I got it.
Sounds good. I am planning to update to Pie (whenever that comes), and then I'll worry about rooting. But I was worried that down the road when we get to Q that it would auto-update and break my phone because it was incompatible with TWRP or something. But so long as I have the chance to decline it, I will hopefully be good.
Root now with magisk. When p comes you can flash the magisk Uninstaller and unroot. Then after you update to p you can boot a twrp.img again and flash magisk again.

I have three moto x4's that can't be rooted. I need to record telephone conversations for my work so I have to keep them on Android 8. I keep getting notices almost twice a day to upgrade to Android 9, and while I can choose "later" it is getting annoying and starting to interfere with my use of the phones.
I tried turning off notices for google play but that did not stop the notices.
Does anyone know of a way to prevent the notices from appearing?
I've since switched to a custom ROM, but I disabled the Moto update service when I was running stock Oreo and that stopped the notifications for me. Now, I did this on a rooted x4 using Titanium Backup rather than from the Settings app, but it's worth a shot.

cannot root because bootloader cannot be unlocked. cannot disable moto update service because it is greyed out
Here is a question:
Are these X4 branded or unlocked/open market?
I successfully unlocked bootloader on mine even after updated to 9
You need Linux with adb instead of Windows
Mac may do it too
The phones have locked bootloaders because they were amazon version.
Is there an anti-virus program that would at least prevent the update from downloading or installing unless I specifically allow it?
Hello Everyone!
I've recently stripped away all of the Google Apps and some 'essential' packages that were installed on my Pixel device since I'm currently unable to unlock the device's bootloader (carrier device). Anyway, everything is working superbly, and I have a DNS filter activated to prevent some of my apps from transferring data online.
I wanted to update my Pixel device to Android 11, especially because of wireless ADB but I'm not able to find any option to update throughout the device settings. I'm pretty sure that this is due to one of the packages that I disabled/user uninstalled but I'm not too sure which one? I hope that someone can help me out and save me from hours of going through the stuff that I disabled and finding the package that prevents me from updating. I've thought about Play Services but I'm not too sure about whether that would have an impact.
Also, it's not NetGuard because I disabled it and I still don't get any options or notifications to update my phone.

Sideload the full OTA from Recovery. You can do this with a locked bootloader. Search "rescue ota".
