I will soon be opening up my phone (T-mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition) to replace the glass screen with a new one ordered online. I've never even opened the phone before and was wondering if someone has performed this operation before. I would really appreciate any pointers, tricks, cautions, pictures, etc.

The company I bought the screen from was GetHighTech, Inc, in California. By coincidence, they are about an hour's drive away from my home.
They only sell the glass screen and high capacity battery replacements. The screen comes with absolutely no documentation or instructions. I just got it a few minutes ago.
just wanted to see if you had any luck with the changeout.
Screen replaced successfully: observations
It was a tricky operation, but I finally managed to replace my broken touch screen. And the patient is alive, and only a little worse off for the experience.
I was held back for a week until I could get the right size torx screwdrivers to remove the back cover. Once inside, it was a very very tricky process slicing off the broken screen with a razor blade. It was glued to the lcd display. This would have been hard even if the screen was not shattered. Definitely needed goggles to protect against flying splinters of glass. I used cotton swabs and 99% alcohol to clean the glass dust off the glue around the edges of the lcd, then I put the new screen on while that residual gum was still a bit tacky.
There was a very thin existing plastic cover over the lcd in between the glass touch screen and the rest of the lcd. Since it did not come off with the glass, I left it in place even though it had a couple of small scratches from contact with the broken glass. It seems like it was there to keep dust off the lcd or something like that.
This was my first time inside the phone. I noticed that replacing the whole LCD component would have been a trivial task by comparision to replacing the glass alone. And even easier would have been adding a new battery.

I replaced my touchscreen a few weeks ago. Like Lawrence said it's a little tricky and you need to be patient.
I bought my touchscreen from www.pdasmart.com/pdaphone.htm for $75 and they gave great instructions.

Protective Acryclic Cover over the Digitizer
I have an odd problem. I have an SX56 with a broken protective cover. The protective cover is the acrylic sheet that sits between the digitizer and the outside world. Everything else works fine including the digitizer. I have found every replacement part except that cover. I've even tried local plastic stores. They don't carry the proper thickness (0.125mm).
Any thoughts or sources besides sending it in for a $200 repair?
Anyone know how to get the front bezel off this thing?
It's begging for a paint job.

and perhaps a generous application of rubber cement. I had ONE creek point when i bought it - annoying but livable enough (plus the fact all the bad hours of xmas I was working I never had time to return it in the 30 day period to best buy). now almost 2 months latter theres three...

In the tear down I remember seeing roughly 10 small philips screws holding it from the inside to the metal sub structure. To tighten it you need to remove the back of the device then you will see the screws running around the perimeter. I also remember the screen is held to the bezel with a form of double faced tape.

Its funny because the guy at Best Buy was trying to pull the back off of the one I returned... No idea why he was trying to yank the back off of it...
I guess if he had succeeded I would have seen the screws..
Funny enough the display model NookColor at my local best buy was practically falling off. When I first looked at the device I nearly did not buy one because of that but then getting one in my hands at B&N changed my mind.
The front bezel is a "tape and cover" paint job. The screen is glued to the frame pretty solid. I had mine apart to fiddle around and to get the back off for a mold. Most of the screws are Torx #5 or #6. Tape it off good and you should be ok as far as the front bezel. The rear and metal frame you can easily get to by proper disassembly.

Here's what I did.
You'll need a torx 5. After you unscrews the 2 screws by the sd slot, use your nail along the chamfer corner to lift the back siding up. Then use a credit card to lift the back up and run along the edge to unhinged the back.
techboydino, are you going to make a new front bezel? might be a small after market for such things. I'd pick up a more solid one if the price was right.

I was really considering metal but the fact that most would have to really take special care to actually seperate the bezel from the screen really kind of set me off that. making a case for this is rediculously hard. (compared to my attempts at other devices. if you ever seperated a screen for a cell phone from the glass then you know what I mean. I am trying to replace the back with aluminum and wanted to do a carbon fiber front. so far everything is too thick or just plain looks bad.

i took the kickstand off a picture frame...white glued it and had one. Then took it off to fit my new cover...replacement kickstand not put on yet..

Your best bet is probably to pick up a smoked one off EBay or one with a cracked screen and a good bezel.
Actually post up WTB (want to buy) dead Nook Color in the XDA market and link to it in this thread. I seem to recall a couple readers here who have more than "gently used" Nooks....
Ok, had a great Thanksgiving until I dropped my Bionic on concrete outside. I guess it landed on the top corner where the power button is, the glass is smashed there and partially missing with major cracks going downwards over half the screen. Miraculously, the LCD display itself is undamaged, only the outer glass. Also the digitizer is still functional. I researched the parts and found that the digitizer and outer glass are one piece on top of the LCD. I couldn't locate any teardown video showing how to take these things apart properly but I did find photos and a new digitizer/glass assembly on E-bay for only $35 bucks. I had sucessfully replaced one of these on a motorola Cliq and figured the Bionic should be easier since it lacks the sliding keyboard. I took a T5 driver and seperation tool and had it disassembeled in 5 minutes. I love how easy it is! I reassembled it until the new screen arrives, hopefully this week.
Since I couldn't find a video of the teardown (and assuming no one else has either) I would be willing to video the job when I replace the screen IF there is sufficient interest.

I cracked my bionic glass last weekend and just got my replacement screen.
I'm about ready to dig in to fix it, but in reading repair guides for other phones, it appears that the LCD could be glued to the glass. When you had yours open, did you see if the LCD is glued to the glass/digitizer assembly on the Bionic? I'm hesitant to open it up until I know since its still working with the cracks.
I paid $50 at Dealsishop and it came in 7 days.

My only question is that the glass was stuck to the frame with a thin double stick tape. I tried to re-use it, but there were multiple gasket type shapes that didn't keep their shapes. What do people use for this material?

I tore down the phone once, everything but taking the glass out of the frame. The LCD was NOT stuck to the glass/digitizer. The only adhesive material I encountered was the large sticker with the IMEI numbers and such in the battery compartment. That thing actually causes the back piece and underlying piece to stick together. Felt like I was going to bend the pieces when I tried separating them because of that sticker, so I just removed the sticker first and was a lot easier.

Well I only payed $35 for mine on E-Bay, they say it's OEM part and all, lets hope its the real deal. Also, atleast in the photo, it LOOKS like it includes the entire piece, the frame around the glass and all. Did you get something a little different? Could be the photo is misleading on the E-Bay item too...we will find out soon enough.

My glass/digitizer looks the same as the one on ebay. It does not come with the frame around the glass (the part that says Verizon on the bottom). The glass is held in the frame only with double stick tape around the perimeter - works really well because it was tough to get off without damaging the frame. I'm thinking I may need to buy some of that tape and re-do it if it gets loose. Also, there were little gasket-like things around the openings that I couldn't re-use.

So I am about to order the screen and begin the replacement process. Do you think there is enough stick left in the tape to hold the screen to the frame for now? With it put back together, does it force the screen to but up against the frame without the tape doing anything? What does the gasket go around? Did you have to use any of the tools listed in the tear down (besides the t5 screwdriver)

The tape is holding for me so far, but I don't think it is right. It's not bulging or anything, but it seems loose in spots. There are holes for the speaker and camera. I'm guessing the gaskets are to keep dust/moisture out. I used the t5 and a couple of plastic tools to separate the parts. The other thing not mentioned in the teardown is that there is a large sticker just below the battery that keeps the back from coming out. I just pulled it back halfway and it releases. Then after everything is reassembled, the sticker can be put back like new.

I ordered the glass, and the repair kit online 60bucks total. (prices everywhere have gone up in past 24 -48 hours!)
weird.
The local shop says they can repair for 125 bucks. So hopefully i can do this.

Ok, the digitizer/glass arrived today and after a chill with some beers I decided to take a crack at the replacement job.. so please look over my clumsiness.
I experienced the same issues as PASP10 concerning the adhesive for the glass and the slight 'bulging' after the replacement. This is a result of the replacement not being bonded to the frame as well as the original. Everything else is perfect. I will probaly be looking for a kind of epoxy to line the frame with and re-do it later.
Right now, I'm working on converting the HD video of the rebuild I did and uploading to YouTube. Once finished, I will post the link in the 1st post of this thread. Thanks all!

Thanks man. I took it back apart later .because I didn't like the "looseness" of the new glass, it was missing the adhesive of the original. I put a small bead of some Plumbers Goop adhesive/sealant around the edge of the frame under the glass since I already had a tube and it seems very close consistency to the original stuff. It worked great
As far as the original video, it was several gigabytes of HD video lol

I recently fell whilst holding my brand new N6 and cracked the screen pretty bad. The digitiser and LCD appear to work OK, so I'm taking the plunge and will try and replace the glass myself.
I've replaced the display module (glass, LCD and digitiser) for a number of family/friend's phones and feel comfortable about working with the small electronics. I've been reading and watching countless tutorials on the removal of the glass from the rest of the display assembly but and yet to find any information specifically about doing this on the N6. Specifically, I'm worried about how the speakers will affect the glass removal process.
If anyone has any N6 specific info, it would be most appreciated. I'm waiting for the replacement glass to arrive, I'll update this thread with how i get on!

I've been through that. Will be useful to get me to the display module, but would have been nice if they showed what it looks like in more detail. I'll be sure to take lots of pictures when i do this and maybe a video.

Did you try replacing just the glass or the whole display module? What went wrong? I'm also about to replace the display module on the N7 2012, the glass is cracked and half the digitiser doesn't work.

with the iphone it was both the LCD and Digitizer I was replacing and they came together as one................same with the N7, both together, trying to install/remove these separately is suicide unless you have the right tools etc........
Have you bought the LCD/Digitizer toggether inside the silver bezel, I didn't, and I should have.........
basically there was a small cable on the back of the LCD/Digitizer that was present on the old damaged module, but not on the new one I had bought, I tried removing form the old and into the new, plugged in the normal power and screen cables, but then nothing, didn't work, my frustration also resulted in a small crack to the new screen.............
it possible but you need to have patience and the tools, which it sound like you do.......but its much easier already inside the silver bezel...........
the screen was glued into the bezel and removing this was murder, managed it, but had to pick out all the smashed glass bit by bit........
don't let me put you off though, you sound more competent than me........

I haven't bought the replacement display module yet for the Nexus 7. Thanks for the info, think i'll try and get one with a bezel to be on the safe side.
its definitely the way to go as you will just be popping off the back cover, releasing the ribbon cables, removing some screws, peeling back some adhesive tape and that's you.........
and any dings to the bezel will dissapear too............
Removing the LCD ribbon cable on N6 is PITA I don't want to even think how to plug in the new one. The digitizer is easy since there is lock on it but the LCD just plugs in with lots of friction.
Any tips?

Unless you have the right equipment and lots of time buy the whole assembly.
You can watch videos on youtube how complicated is to separate the glass from LCD
£122 repair cost in UK.

I'm experiencing the same problem. I've replaced the digitizers/screens on all versions of the iPhone and also on the Samsung Galaxy S4. I successfully replaced only the glass on some Samsung devices too. I'm wondering if I'll be able to do this with the Nexus 6 if I just buy the $10 replacement glass.

I was reading ifixit's how to guide. They state that the digitizer is fused to the glass. Possibly that's why everyone stops at this step.....

yes the glass repair is possible i am uploading photos of the process i did. i do work for a cell phone repair company and this has been a very common repair. Nexus 6 glass only repair with the use of OCA (optical clear adhesive) and bonded together with an ridge to ridge lamintator and and mini autoclave.
It turns out Motorola Official repair was £128 plus the postage to send them the phone in the first place.
I am unfortunately in the same boat. I sustained probably 15 scratches that my fingernail could get stuck on them all. My phone scraped along an artificial hardwood floor when a dog stepped on it facedown and slid. So I bought some cerium oxide in an attempt to sand down and buff away the scratches. I was not successful, and it looks like I added some more scratches. I'm going to put up with them until I get more, then replace the screen & digitizer probably while also adding a screen protector. I hate the feel of screen protectors though

Impressive. What's your process for separating the cracked glass from the digitizer?
Although I'm sure the OP was asking for a way that doesn't require thousands of dollars worth of specialized equipment.
Has the OP given up on this project? I cracked my glass the other day however the digitizer still works just fine. I wanted to know if there was a do it yourself way to change the crystal without having to purchase a digitizer/crystal combo?

Ive looked at several websites for a replacement chassis in white. So far ive only found internal grids sections and replacement front glass and led. My nice new note took a nice hit directly to concrete the other day and put some very large divets in the aluminum frame. It would be easy to rwplace if i could find the part. Can anybody help? Thanks in advance
