So I learned about rooting mid last year around the time the Bionic was released and I decided to get the phone and root it. It sounded great and it has been, but not entirely. For instance I'm still on 5.5.886 because as far as I know the only way to update is to revert to stock? Which I honestly haven't felt like doing. I guess I really don't mess with my phone enough, or even know enough to take advantage of some of the major things that make rooting worthwhile.
There are a few things I have done though that I really like, though. So my questions are:
Without root, is there anyway to have a percentage battery display without a tacky looking app? Remove the clock from the taskbar? Remove Verizon's bloatware?
What data can I expect to lose if I do a FXZ back to stock?
Will ICS have toggle icons for WiFi, GPS, etc. that appear in the "pulldown menu"? Or is that more of a feature for certain phones?
And lastly would you recommend I unroot or look into other options?
I'm still weighing the pros and cons of being rooted so I'm just looking for some further insight to push me in one direction or the other.

This is my first smart phone and bought it October last year. I educated myself and rooted a month later. To me, this is just a mini PC and I want full control over it. Just like buying a Dell, or HP, I want to remove all of the junk software that uses up computer resources.
I also started on. 886. Then 43v3r rooted. First loaded Bionic Bootstrap and made a backup. Then downloaded Titanium Backup and started freezing programs. At some point I had deleted color note and didn't even realize it was a stock application. So when I went to Upgrade to .901 leaked, it failed. Ended up restoring the .886 bootstrap back up. Then .901 leaked installed fine.
Here are the reasons I like to have my phone rooted: Remove bloatware. Maintain full system back ups. Remove ads from applications, unless donating remove the ads. Have access to applications that require a rooted system. And finally, since I have control issues, I do not want someone telling me what I can and cannot do with my "mini PC".
So now, I have gone from .901 leaked, to .902 OTA update, now running .905 OTA update. In between, I had frozen bloatware with titanium backup and thawed before the next OTA update.
Other answers:
I use Sense Snalog Clock application that has a battery monitor on it. Not sure how accurate it is, but it works for me. Also, it is a very nice customizable clock that you can add to your home page.
I am pretty sure you can use titanium backup to backup all of your applications and data before you FXZ to stock.
I am unsure of what you mean about the toggles in the "pull down" menu. I use on/off widget pack by curvefish. Not sure about ICS yet, as I have not upgraded to it. Pretty happy with the phone as it is right now with .905.
Being that I am a novice user, I am not sure of the best process to utilize to get you back to stock. But, I would go back to stock 886. Then forever root. Dhacker29's (if I wrote his use name correctly) procedures works very well for me. I manually forever rooted. His processed kept me rooted through all of the upgrades.
As you probably have gathered by now, if you are willing to tinker with your phone a little bit more, I would suggest that you stay rooted.
I hope this helps. Good luck.

So I've been looking at some of the more recent ROMs and like a couple of them pretty well so I think I'm gonna stay rooted. However I have to be on system version 905 to install any of them. Is the best way to get to 905 to use RSD to get back to 902 stock unrooted then forever root and upgrade to 905?
Pretty much, yes. However I can't speak for the 4ever root as I've never used it. I've only used zergrush and/or Pete's 1 click to get root on 902, then used voodoo root keeper to temporarily unroot so I could take the 905 OTA and reroot.

Here's the link to manually forever root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312555
This procedure allowed me to maintain root from .893, to leaked .901, OTA .902, and now OTA .905. Forgot to mention in my previous post that I went from .886, to .893, then to .901. Not .886 to .901.
Use Root Explorer and e sure to select "Mount R/W" before you open mount_ex3.sh to add the text at the bottom. After you add the text, hit the back button once and select "Mount R/O". Otherwise the text you add will not stay in the file.
Here's a screen shot of my mount_ex3.sh file. The last three lines of text are what I added for forever root. This was easier to me than hooking up to a PC and running one of the root programs.

Ok so I used RSD to get back to stock .902. Then upgraded to .905 and used MotoFail to root. I ended up installing Eclipse 3.0. Now I'm having some problems with my phone. I don't want to submit a bug report until I know if it's the ROM or my phone. I figured I'd just post what's going on in here instead of creating a new topic.
I was texting a couple people last night and they both stopped replying at the same time. It was kind of late though so I thought maybe they fell asleep. Then today at work my ringtone started going off. No one was calling me though and the only way I got the ringtone to stop was to power off the phone. So I sent a text to one of the people I was talking to the night before and asked if she got my texts. She told me she didn't and I sent another text that she didn't get. When I got home I sent a text to my mom to see if my phone was alright and she got it so I had her reply to make sure I was receiving messages. I received her reply 15 times. I'm not sure if this has something to do with the ROM or the phone itself. What do you guys think?
I updated OTA to 10.4.B.0.569 a few weeks ago.
My phone is stock, rooted, locked BL.
Today I'm getting another OTA system update notice to 10.4.B.0.569 - showing 1.2mb
This is the same version as I already have, but showing a very small size.
Does anyone know about this, and what it is?
Thanks.

I'm getting this too, read somewhere it's supposedly there to update apps but I don't know 100%.. Can't get rid of the message either from my status bar! I also have 101 ready to install on PCC so not sure if I can just update straight to that instead of going through the 569 update OTA? Hoping it won't interfere with my phone etc & mess things up...

Yeah, I hear that the 101 update is rolling soon (another few months then lol) - where did you get it early?
I'm going to run the update and see what it does anyway.

Mine is already available on PCC (UK generic) but I haven't had the chance to update yet. Not with the known bug of the screen not coming on when pressing the power button lol

Ah, I hardly ever connect mine to PCC lol, there ya go then. :silly:
I've heard about the screen not coming on, but I've never had any issues like that either.
Now it won't let me update cos the battery is only on 37% lol

I just updated mine (569 again), said it would take 2 mins but not even that, more like 30 seconds!
Will let you know of changes I notice, but prob won't be any.
The screen not coming on I think is a known bug with 101, not sure about previous updates as I have never experienced this!

Well, got mine over 50%, ran the update, can't say I've noticed any differences to be honest.
Point to note - root was retained again.
Did only take 30 seconds or so, like you say.
I think I'll read up a bit more on the 101 update before I go there :good:

It's just a minor update , after installing it your standby time will improve and also the phone will become a little snappier
I was hoping this would fix the bluetooth audio stutter, but it still stutters. Any other changes?
hi guys and gals
im already on 10.4.B.0.569 as well, rooted already.
got this notification of update with the size 1.2MB, so i am assuming its the same one.
from what i read here, its safe to install this update and it will not remove my root.
is my understanding correct?
btw i used this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565850, when i updated to 10.4.B.0.569.
thanks
UPDATE
i tried installing, but after the reboot, it said it could not install.
any one experience this?
any suggestions what I can do?
thanks.
Ah, you've installed the custom. 569 ROM from NUT's thread.
Mine was stock. 569 OTA update originally, before this 1.2mb thing, perhaps that is why?
Sorry, can't help more, I'm still learning myself.

it will take you through all the updates. if you only updated one time, then you arent done yet. there are three marshmallow updates. one main update, and two security updates.
I just updated my s6 with the marshmallow update. I keep getting this notification: "Security notice. Unauthorized actions have been detected. Restart your phone" I thought maybe it was because I turned off permissions for a lot of the stock apps like calendar, email, etc since I use other apps for those. But I've restarted 4 times over 6 days and the notice came up again today. How in the heck do I get it to go away? It is driving me nuts. From searching for info, it seems this has happened on other galaxies on other carriers with previous updates and getting a new update was the only thing to fix. Am I just SOL?
Anyone having this issue after updating to Marshmallow? I even just did a factory reset and didn't restore anything and it came up with in 10 minutes of using the phone again.
Hello,
I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 3, N900A, Android Version 5.0 on AT&T, Baseband N900AUEOC1, Kernal 3.4.0-4335446, rooted.
If I turn the phone off and then back on again or reboot I get a long white scree with the AT&T logo, Android is upgrading... Optimizing app # of 316, then a long time I can use the phone.
I did some online searching, and found some really old posts. I don't mess with the configuration much. I rooted it many months (years?) ago, and can't recall why. I think i wanted a hotspot, but that never worked out for me.
I suspect that AT&T is sending an over the air update and does not like the rooted phone. I searched thee settings in an effort to turn off auto update with no luck. I am hoping for something other than: wipe, reload...
Service Disabler from the Play Store ended up working.
Easy to use and dumped some bloatware while I was in there.

Well this is a little frustrating. Went on and off with no update process yesterday. Today I rebooted and the 316 updates were optimized. I looked at the service disable app and the AT&T update service was still disabled.
Anyone have any thoughts?
Clearing the cache seemed to help. Let's see if the updates come back over the next few days...
No updates yesterday. Today there are 322 apps to optimizing... Anyone seen and fixed this before?
I started having the same problem 2 weeks ago after updating SU . Looks like they sent out 2 bad updates. Here is a link to the issue. I have been unable to solve it and their recommendations is to reroot the phone.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/stable-2016-09-01supersu-v2-78-release-t3452703
Thank you pinkpanther28. A true smoking gun. I disabled SuperSU and the update issues was gone. Enabled SuperSU and sure enough it came right back. The real irony is that I upgraded to SuperSU Pro to make sure 'Disable Service" had access. For now I will leave SuperSU disabled....
Well so much for the smoking gun. I turned my phone on this morning and the updates issue is back, even with both SuperSU and SuperSU Pro disabled. Does anyone have any ideas?
