I still own an HP iPAQ. Granted it's getting on a bit but I can do everything the Orange SPV M2000 (Blue Angel) can, except make phone calls. It was a great little device and one of the best things about it was the battery lasted ages.
Granted it doesn't have to keep polling the radio signal every few seconds but there is one way I think that battery performace could be improved and that's by making the screen less bright.
Right now I find the screen is way too bright at night. I play games and read on it in bed.
Is there any way of programatically making the brightness levels finer grained? WM5 has 10 graduations whereas the iPAQ has about 30.
Through this one change alone, I know I could get about another 2/4 hours usage out of my Blue Angel.
Anyone (Helmi?) know if this is possible by simply increasing the number of divisions in the brightness slider?
Isn't this just a change of a variable in the code or does the hardware fundamentally not allow it?
Looking though the registry there is a reg value for the brigtness levels at..
HKEY_CURRENT_USERS/ControlPanel/Backligh/
[ACBrightNess] and [BrightNess]
At default, the maximum value of the BrightNess settings can be 10, the lowest 1, with any other number higher or lower apparently turning off the brightness. You can adjust the scale of the brightness levels, so you can have 30 diffrent levels of controll by editing the [DefaultACBrightNess] and [DefaultBrightNess] values to 30, but this doesn't work too well on my device and value 1 is just as bright as it was before.
One extra little thing though, is that on the same registery folder is a value [QKeyLedTimeout] which controls the timeout of the blue lights behind the slide out keyboard, in seconds. I've set this to 30 which seems to be better then the mear 10 seconds you are normally given.
Thanks for that Percz
I'm going to download a registry editor from somewhere and give it a shot.
Did you work all this out by playing around with the registry?
I found in the same folder
HKEY_CURRENT_USERS/ControlPanel/Backligh/
the two keys MaxACBrightness and MaxBrightness. I set those to 30 and now I've got 30 graduations in the slider but only the first 10 work.
I guess there must be another two keys somewhere that set the actual low brightness and high brightness values.
I'll keep digging around and see if I can find something.
Well I have a HP Jornada 720 Handheld PC and it is 6 years old and still has the original battery in it and I find it lasts about 7 hours easy and I use it every week or so now but before I would be using for a couple of hours a day and it just keeps going a reset every few months but other than that it is fine. With the BA reset it 3 times a day, carry a extra battery just so it makes it through the day and then you still have other problems.
it's always kind of bugged me that in the hero settings, the screen timeouts available are only
15 sec
30 sec
1 min
2 min
10 min
never
honestly, i'd like the option to use 3 min, or 5 minutes. i'm using damaged 2.09.01, with the 768 oc boot, and i get ridiculously good battery times - so i'd like to go for say 5 min screen time, but ten min seems....excessive.
there must be a config file somewhere on the phone where it limits the choices to those listed. anyone know where it might be found?
I want to set 5 minutes on mine, too.
So as the title says, my note has never lasted a full day on a full charge. Even with moderate use, it lasts maybe 15-16 hours. With heavy use, playing a game or 2 or using the browser, it lasts maybe 9 hours. From the first day I got it I've rooted it and have used only the romow rom.
Currently on the version 7.5 HD.
BB: LA4
Kernal: AbyssNote 3.3
Each time I flash a new rom I always do a battery calibration test and even wipe the battery stats on recovery.
I notice people get a full day's use from the battery and maybe even more. Is there something I am missing? My wi-fi is always off unless I am at home or when needed. I turn the data connection off too most of the times. When I look at the battery usage in settings (I do this often), the display shows the most usage, always more than 65%, and nothing else. The android system, android OS, cell standby and whatever else are always less than 10%. Is there something I can do to increase the time the battery lasts? I'd like to get a full day's worth, and even more
Use black backgrounds and dark apps? Amoleds don't use power to display black. Whites will suck your battery dry.

I would also suggest get your battery checked. But more than likely, Samsung will say 15-16 hours of moderate use is normal.
I am currently using Rocket ROM v20 with Abyss 3.5b. I have had it without charge for 12 hours now and from 100% it is at 82% right now. So far today I have watch an ep of anime (22mins long), gaming for 1.5 hours, had 4 phone calls (total of 42 mins). I think only draining 18% after all of that is impressive.

That is impressive. If I watch a 40 min show only, my battery would go down from 100% to 65. And if I play a game for an hour (depends on the cpu/ram usage the game takes up to), then my battery is at 20%. And this has been since the beginning. The moderate use I am talking about is calls here and there, texting, playing a game for maybe 20 min. Like today I played Shadowgun for a total of an hour, where's my water for 20 min, and texted a bit, made 2 calls, and used dolphin browser for 10 min. It hasnt even been 12 hours and my battery is at 20%. Ahhh I think I just need to get a new battery.
I know roms/kernals/basebands all factor into battery usage as well, so are there any suggestions as to which one might be good with this? Aesthetically I love romow's rom. I love every layout of it. Rocket rom is a little too "in your face" kind of, atleast for me.
Im always set my brightness to 0% and im not using auto brightness. What if you change the kernel to FM 2.0 Kernel. i find it saves more batt than abyss kernel.

I actually like the "in your face" look, of course that is my preference. I heard that checkrom is good for battery but in all honesty, I have tried a couple of roms and there isn't a huge difference between them. The biggest difference with battery usage I have notice is when you start using a OCing app with profiles like SetCPU. Tweak the power usage with each speed step and create profiles for when the screen is off, on call and etc.

How hot does it get compared to room temp? 15C warmer? 20C warmer?
I'd really love to work with some people to come up with a step by step guide on how to track down and fix battery drain / over heat problems.
The best way to waste power is to make heat with radio chip and GPU. Second best is to make light with torch or screen.
I know with the change in battery technology, some old practice no longer applies but I still follow the old rule of thumb when I get a new equipment.
When I got my Note, the very first thing I did was charge the phone for 12 hours before actually using it. You might want to give that a shot, the reading on the battery may not always be correct.

may i know which governor are you using? try to update the AbyssNote kernel to latest v3.5c and try either the AbyssPlug, lulzactive or SmartassV2 governor then see if there's any difference
Running stock LA4 ROM here. Brightness usually on lowest. If you don't touch the phone, it can last on standby a week. See below how it only lost 3% after 17 hours. Of course as the screen was off all the time, the internal processes take most of the power consumed.
After more than 1 day I still have 50% battery. See how it drops fast when I'm using the phone to read and download web pages.
I have the self same issue - battery hardly lasts a day - I just about manage to get home 8 hours later on critical - to hook it up to mains to charge.
All I use it during the course of the day - is browsing forums via tapatalk, viewing the occasional email. No hectic media consumption and music playing.
I am trying a different route now - it was running on stock firmware - over the weekend I've taken the following steps.
Rooted my device , installed CheckRom Revo v5 , running speedmod kernel with modem LA4
Hoping to see how that improves things.

First of all, you should post a screen shot of your battery graph.
How bright is your screen? If it's at 100%, then you're going to chew through battery very fast.
Games that require very high cpu usage will kill the battery.
Some games I can play forever on - some games, like Plants vs zombies, or puzzle quest 2, kill the battery. I can probably get 3-4 hours worth on a battery, and that's with a very low screen brightness. That's the price to pay with a fast cpu.
Dolphin is quite the battery hog too. I try to avoid it - I browse for hours with opera mobile, especially with the green on black mod.

Whats the best app for battery statistics? I will get the graph and post a screenshot tm. My brightness is usually 50 % set in the middle always. Today I put my brightness all the way down to 0, I literally did not use my phone, maybe turned it on couple times during the day for 2 min, sent 1 text, played a game for 5 min, and used a medical application for 10 min, just to check the battery. With that much minimal amount of phone usage, after about 9 hours my battery was at 79%. Is that normal?
Just wanted to say thanks for the help also

Install better battery stats and check for kernel wakelocks. If there exists some that last longer than 10 mins then some app is involved in the battery leak
I have this brand new Xperia V, and right after I turned it on yesterday, the phone started to get really hot near the camera flash, and I mean REALLY hot, had to leave it for few minutes to cool down. And this happens even after some casual use, like browsing web or checking stuff.....
Why is that? Please tell me its software related, I updated it to 9.1.A.1.140

Yes, the root is fine.
I downloaded the cpu monitor, and there is nothing serious that would make the cpu go high, and I just installed dungeon hunter 4 and played it for like 20min, the phone was very hot after 5mins, but after that it didnt get any hotter... dont know, maybe it would fix itself.
Anyway, at least if it burns I'll have a good excuse to shove it up the retailers ass

That's the spirit

From some research on this problem that seems to affect different models past and present, it is likely that it is a kernel's bug.
I have the same sort of problem.
When i browse the web in normal 3G network (or even WIFI) for about 10-15 minutes the device gets so hot on the upper region of the phone (not where the battery is located) around the Camera and flash light.
Been using a software called TempMonitor to measure the heat on the processer (my guess is that where the heating is comming from).
It displays up to 68 degrees celsius and by just holding the phone It burns my hand. And that was just regular webbrowsing.
I've added some screenshots on the numbers. 1 is when i was charging and webbrowsing and 1 only webbrowsing.
Had the phone on service twice and got the software updated, but they haven't detected any heating problems.
I've also talked to a Sony support guy in Sweden and he said "If the phone gets so hot that you get damaged by it then you have the rights to get a new one (needed to be confirmed by a doctor)". But any normal person wouldn't use the phone until he or she damages his/her health with it.
Today the phone Is unusable after 10-15 minutes of webbrowsing, because it gets too hot, but according to the service center they never detected that problem.
Can't get the phone changed unless service center finds a problem they can't fix, but thats impossible when they don't seem to try and find the problem.
Somtimes i think that the phones processor is running on max speed all the time no matter how little i use it.
i think , most phones use krait processors face the same , overheat.
but i think we can still handle it ... just go to /system/etc/thermald.conf.
you'll see some codes just find this :
[tsens_tz_sensor0]
sampling 1000
thresholds 65 90 93 96 99 102 105
thresholds_clr 62 87 90 93 96 99 102
actions cpu cpu cpu cpu cpu cpu shutdown
action_info 1512000 1296000 1188000 918000 756000 648000 5000
the first row , thresholds. this handles the max temperatur of the cpu, and thresholds_clr for the minimal temperature. actions i think this what part of phones that related to temperature. and action_info, this the speed of the CPU
see, the first coloumn
thresholds 65
thresholds_clr 62
actions cpu
actions_info 1512000
when the cpy temperature hits 65 celcius, it will lets the cpu stay in higher frequency , but when the heats hit 90 it will ask the cpu to lower the speed to be 1296000.
lowering the cpu , will make the phone cooler ... whe the heat increases the frequencies of cpu decreases.
i edit my thermald.conf only in the first coloumn to be like this
thresholds 58
thresholds_clr 55
action cpu
action_info 1458000
so, when my phone hits 58 degrees , it will lower the frequencies only 1458000 for the maximum.
you may try with your own value , mostly only change the first coloumn. but, when you set the value in each coloumn too tight, your phone performance willn decrease because of the frequencies dropped too fast.
Thermald is not used in Sony firmwares. Sysmon is used. But it's nothing new. Look at the thread in general section.

Are you on custom firmware or just stock?
The stock sysmon.cfg is setup to shut down the phone if it gets above 60 deg F.

I've seen in the general section that the auto-brightness feature of Z2 is very controversial. I'm of those who find that the screen is a little too dim even with auto-brightness set at its max. Hoping that this will be fixed in a future firmware.
I've tested Lux Auto Brightness and it works very fine as a replacement as the built-in stock autobrightness. It is quite reactive and the brightness can be easily calibrated.
It is not free though.
I agree, LUX works far better than the default system function.
However it needs some tweak to be perfect; as sometime it chooses to dim the screen a little too much

Yes, a profile must be created and edited. This is the profile I've created:
Lux / Brightness
0 / 50%
35 / 70%
1000 / 100%
+ log interpolation (default)
+ 5% Jitter percentage
+ brightness variation speed: normal
It's fine for me
Wow that's brighter than me
My configuration is a bit overkill though :
0 -35%
10 30%
20 35%
35 40%
45 50%
60 60%
700 75%
1400 75%
10000 80%
13000 100%
Sent from my D6503 using Tapatalk
Yes, this is why I found that the stock autobrightness was to dim even set at its max.
I've modified my profile a little, stretching it from 50% to 100%, it's better like that.
For those of you who already have Tasker, this can be quite easily done using Tasker as well. For me, I set on auto-brightness but with slider to the max. This suits me for most occasions, except when it's really dark, in which case I find it too bright. So for me I just have 2 simple profiles on screen unlock if the light reading is less than 5, set brightness to 0, otherwise set brightness to 255.

10 // 50%
60 // 60%
800 // 80%
