Reading up on some daily news, I came across an article reviewing the new N7 hardware and the 4.2 update.
The reviewer soon found out that the 32gb unit was much snappier in booting and loading apps. So he put it to the test against an 8gb unit and the results are clear.

We, the first 8GB/16GB buyers, got stolen on this one.
I am not paying for a Nexus 10 after this.
So Asus aren't allowed to improve parts in later batches? That's ridiculous, it's likely that the better memory got cheaper and so was used, keeping the BOM the same with better performance. Just because they aren't Apple and don't make even a minor change a huge deal with a new version doesn't mean it's bad.

Calm down. The 16gb was faster than the 8gb from the beginning. See: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6130/the-16gb-nexus-7-storage-performance for a rundown of the difference between 8gb vs 16gb.
Looking at the numbers, its tough to say whether there is even a difference between the 16gb vs the 32gb. Someone would need to test them the same way side by side to be sure.

You didn't get "stolen", you got exactly what you paid for.
Higher capacity SSDs have always been faster. It's no surprise this is also true in tablets. The 16 GB version is also faster than the 8 GB.
Interesting, thanks.
The 16 GB version of the Nexus 7 has faster storage than the 8 GB, the Ars Technica figures are quite a bit lower than my 8GB, anyway I've never noticed a performance issue on my device.
Between the 32 GB & 16 GB I doubt there is much difference, in a previous thread I asked an early buyer of the 32 GB model to Androbench it against their 16 GB, the result was similar.

Storage in current phones / tablets is not SSD but eMMC, both use NAND memory but there are major differences.
This is common practise with solid state storage, a 128gb SSD will be slower than a 256gb even though they're made my the same manufacturer. A 64gb version will be faster than the 32gb version. Nothing to get pissed about, just they way things worked.
Probably but seems the gains are pretty large. Regardless of the reason, I still found it fascinating that there are such big differences between the units sizes. Very good knowledge if you are on the fence about saving a few bucks on memory. No longer is the battle just whether you can survive with a set space but also picking a slower one.
Sell your 16 and buy a 32 and profit?

Reading the arstechnica article, is not clear if the WIFI 32GB version is faster as well. They only tested the 3G 32GB version. Do you think the WIFI version would have the same boost on nand?
There's also something humorous about people complaining about being "had" on a device with little to no profit margin.

Even funnier is I bet if you randomly picked 10 8GB owners and gave them a 32GB version 0 of them would notice any difference in speed.
The difference in speed is as close to being placebo as you can get without actually being placebo.

Well. As an 8GB owner, I stumbled upon this thread while trying to figure out why my Nexus 7 felt so sluggish, so my gut feeling says that this may not be so placebo after all.
I bought the 8GB version on impulse due to a ridiculously good offer, so neither the slow and little RAM, or the fact that the left side of the screen almost seem to come unglued trouble me. But coming from the original Samsung Tab + the SGII phone, I must admit I'm a bit disappointed in the (lack of) speed and snappiness of the Nexus... Had expected more after two years. Ok, the resolutions is higher and the screen is nice, but that's it.
So my Ford Escort doesnt go as fast as the Ford Mustang and I AM PISSED!
I just assumed all cars made by Ford, even with different specs, would achieve the same road results.
Dupe me and stuff.
I can say honestly that it is no placebo. I have a 16gb and also bought a 32gb a week ago. Within 5 minutes, the difference was very apparent. To get a better feel, I took the 16 back to stock via fastboot and faced them off on equal ground. I did not benchmark, mainly because two 16's can differ in a benchmark. Would not have proved a thing. So, I went by feel. Both on the same wifi network, the 32 crushed the 16 in dl time, install time, and just overall feel. Scrolling, reaction and graphics were a big difference. I installed NFS mw on both, and the 32 was much much smoother. Those are just my personal findings, for what its worth.

No, but I know how to tell which is downloading faster and installing quicker, which is lagging more and whatnot. Sometimes, you dont need a benchmark to do something as simple as monitor time elapsed. Sometimes in the age of technology, a stopwatch and simultaneous side by side comparison is still very useful. Overthinking can occasionally be a problem.
And if your gonna ask a question like" Did you run a test" and then answer you own question with incorrect and sarcastic assumption, just save your time and dont ask. As a result, I wont answer it, and let you look like the fool all alone.

Thats very true, but I compared both stock. If the 16 has a custom kernel, then the 32 needs to have the same in order for a comparison to be anywhere near accurate. You could compare a stock gm engine to a blown 383 too, but it would be pointless. Dont need a dragstrip to figure that one out.

Not to be a Debbie Downer here, but we've seen variations larger than this in N7's running the same specs, ROMs, etc. Hence the many differences in the "lag thread" and many other threads. A test between 2 units isn't even remotely conclusive.

you actually have a decent experience. I'm using my Nexus One since my other phone broke. I probably will be using this phone for a long long time until I save enough money to buy a new phone
ICS or Jelly Bean, they both are pretty smooth and stable, and functional
no.

I recommand you to buy At least nexus S above if you are looking for an android device that works properly on android 4.0 above.
I love my nexus one and I've run a jellybean rom on it for up to maybe 6 weeks (evervolv 4.1) it seemed to be the most stable for me out of all of them but there was a 3 second call delay on almost every rom I tried except cm7.2 and stock 2.3.6 it had when I bought it. I tried the latest 4.2 stuff and I always end up with one problem or other despite that the phone technically does work and only occasionally froze or rebooted.
Since my girlfriend has an iPhone 4s and we all know they are pretty stable if nothing else and she does pick up my phone from time to time. With cm7.2 it may be outdated but its very fast and as reliable as the iPhone in my experience. Now I don't have to worry about her whining about my "stupid phone".

ICS and JB are stable for this device, but not so very fast or smooth.
But it is cheap, and beautiful. That's all.
I have used all Nexus phones and IMHO you should go for a Nexus S.
Nexus One is a awesome phone but 4.0 is a bit heavier than 2.3, so it lags a bit.

Keep in mind that Nexus S does not have microSD card.
if you wanna play with Android 4.0,I suggest you to get at least Gnex or something later than N1. It may perform better than that.
CM 10.1 runs flawelesly on both GNex and NexS.

Nowdays? I think is not worth the money, but, ey! it runs fluently some 4.0 roms.
It was my first android smartphone and I'm in love with it, I'm not going to sell the N1, now I have a SGS3 but my N1 still serves my for tethering purposes hehe
galaxy nexus shoud be better.
I should say it depends on your budget. I suppose the N1 is available for ~180$ on Amazon. But with that cash would you be able to get another phone with better hardware/upgraded software? There are way more options now.
JB and ICS Roms are right now pretty stable for the N1. As 350Rocket says, there are a few niggles, but the phone can easily be a daily driver. With GB, having used both CM 7.2 and MIUI 2.3.30,I've gotta say it is rock solid stable
Personally, I love this phone's looks and having been my first Android (got it back in 2009), it holds a special place in my heart
Hi guys,
I might be getting a Nexus One (for a good price) at the end of the week.
Is there anything i should look at? Check for typical problems? It is not brand new so i don`t want to end up with a broken device.

The Nexus one is a decent basic smartphone if you keep it on Gingerbread. It'll bog down a bit with ICS or JB but for the most part will still be useable. You can find them for around $100 or less. Just beware of the limited storage. If you can spare a couple extra dollars I would go with a Nexus S.
Get a Nexus 4. Its cheap and a huge bump from whatever you have.

Personally, no, but I got the launch day 8GB model, so while keeping fstrim running from time to time keeps my experience pretty good, I do notice a degradation. I think this issue was largely limited to one production ROM, and mine isn't terrible on a bad day either.
Yes, mine is 16gig and still running great pure stock...

My nexus runs like it did on day one as long as I stay away from ports, ports slow me down and destroy battery life but its not my tablet because official Roms are smooth.
Got the 32GB version when it was launched. I remember it being smoother, it tends to hang for 0.5-1 seconds sometimes
Maybe it's because I got a more powerful device and I started seeing lag differently...
Mine got really slow after the update to 4.2.
I recently did a factory reset, after that it was running smooth again, I also disabled Current (background sync)...
Now I am running 4.3 and used the fastboot ADB method, so I installed the factory image, basically a reset again... it is running fast like I got it the first day!
Pretty fast, I flash my nexus 7 once in awhile.

My N7 16GB is running great. Its a year old now and I've loved every minute with it. After installing 4.3 I'm reconsidering whether or not I should get the new one. I already have someone lined up at work to sell it to, but not so sure I should now....
Hmmm..... decisions, decisions...
After 9 mounths of medium to heavy use, my nexus 7 is still quite fast, sometimes it lags, but overall very satisfying
Mine is several months old and I love it. Every time I reach for a tablet I never know if I should grab my N7 or iPad 3.
Only thing right now is that I don't know anything about 4.3. Not sure how well it runs on the N7 and not sure if I should flash it manually or wait for an OTA.
Nice thing is if you are rooted you can flash 4.3 and if you don't like it you can flash 4.2.2 back
Sent from my Infected Rezound using Tapatalk 2
Maybe it's the placebo effect but 4.3 feels faster, smoother and more responsive. On 4.2.2 I was definitely seeing performance issues, and I also definitely saw a vast improvement after using .nomedia files in basically every folder that Android had no business scanning. I did this because the Android media server was consistently on the top 3 of the most battery-intensive tasks on my tablet, and the .nomedia files sorted this out for me. The difference was like night and day. So yeah, my tablet is still in top condition.
i've never had any serious lag issues outside of the normal android go-to-go stuff... but i've always had like 20gb of free space haha
either way, my 1st gen is more than satisfactory and the experience will not change in a noticeable fashion by upgrading to th\e latest devide, so imma keep rocking it till it dies probably
I'm perfectly happy with my 32G...only problem I've had was after installing "PureCrapNonEnhancer" or whatever it was called... Because of that, I had to completely go back to stock (which was 4.3 in today's learning experience) and now it's better than ever! I won't be "upgrading" unless I win one from somewhere...

My 16GB I bought in August is fairly laggy. Always ran stock. Must have factory reset it 6 times and still not as smooth as the first month I had it.

My 16Gb N7 Wifi is just fine. Sometimes it is a bit slow but rarely. Considering how much widgets I have and that I use TSF Shell which takes a lot of RAM, I am very satisfied with it's performance (and battery!). It was a bit faster with 4.1.1 whici is IMHO the fastest Android for N7, but things got a bit better with 4.2.2 and now 4.3 (although still not as good as 4.1)
Been to repairs once, it was rebooting constantly, since then good.
Mines always been really smooth except when it was full tho the brim with content.

I've had some great use out of my Nexus 4. As a phone, I've absolutely loved it and when I upgrade to Lollipop, I felt like it was reborn, but unfortunately the last few months have proved testing, coming across great new phones that all have MicroSD slots to expand them and unfortunately with just 16GB of internal memory, I'm finding it increasingly hard to use my phone to my enjoyment. Sure, I could dump all my photos onto the Cloud, or I could backup to my computer, or I could do something else... but the point is, I don't want to. I wanted my Nexus 4 to have an SD slot, and I knew I was taking a risk years ago when I bought it. Luckily, it hasn't manifested itself like I expected, although maybe that's because I was careful (no games, no music, routinely deleting old stuff to clean it up, backing up videos onto my FTP server when it got too full etc).
My Nexus 4 has been a terrific device, and since the Lollipop upgrade, has felt like a brand new phone, and if it wasn't for the lack of expandable memory, I wouldn't have considered getting rid of it, but unfortunately the time has come.
I've now switched to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G. It's a budget device (costing just £108 as I didn't pay tax) but is more powerful and has a bigger screen. It also has 4G and expandable memory. It's an interesting upgrade for a Nexus user. I feel like I've gone from a premium device to a budget device and that will take some getting used to, but I think the pros outweigh the cons.
Interestingly, Xiaomi has a huge following in China, India, Malaysia, Singapore, whereas Nexus has a huge following across the rest of the world so I will be experiencing how custom ROM's appear for this phone in a totally different way.
Anyway, as the end draws near for Nexus 4, I'm sure a few of you will be jumping ship soon too, but one things for sure, it's still a great device if you can handle the lack of internal storage, so good on those who do
I have 300 songs, 20 apps, Nokia Here maps of my country (300mb), a few HD videos, 50-ish photos and i still have 5,6GB left.
I know some people use their phones for multimedia and easily fill up even 32gigs, but Nexus 4 isnt a multimedia phone, not with its 2100mah battery and its 4.7" screen
I'm thinking of giving my Nexus 4 to sister this summer and getting something new, but still haven't decided what to get thats not very expensive but good, and i don't want a Nexus 5 because it's too similar to Nexus 4 with similar problems

I don't use my phone for multimedia as such, but I do take a lot of photos. I had about 5.9 GB's of photos on it. which, btw, were a nightmare to get off seeing as MTP is seemingly completely incapable of transferring such a large number of files (ended up installing an FTP server on the phone and using FileZilla instead). Considering you only get about 12GB of usable data (much of which is taken up by apps) meant I had very little left. I do get lots of WhatsApp photos too and I guess I've been lazy about deleting them. Ultimately, I grew frustrated about the fact I was constantly running out of space and without deleting stuff, I really couldn't do much about it. I spent a lot of time going through and deleting stuff but I only ever freed up about 1GB or 2GB which meant I was never too far away from filling my phone.
I kept hearing the argument of 'go cloud', 'cloud storage', 'welcome to the cloud', 'use the Nexus with the cloud', but when it came to actually use the cloud it consistently failed on me. I took several videos at a concert last year amounting to a few GB's. I figured this is exactly what the cloud is for seeing as they weren't desperately needed on my phone as such. I tried to upload them (tried both 3G and WiFi), and the Google Drive app seemed completely incapable of handling large files. It was fine for images, or small videos, but uploading these larger videos, it lagged to the point the phone became totally unresponsive and despite waiting for hours, nothing happened and I eventually had to reboot the phone. I googled the issue and there wasn't much detail of it on the Internet. Perhaps I was a rare case but it meant I had to upload them to my FTP server which wasn't ideal either.
I was very close to getting rid of the N4 when it was running KitKat, as I felt it had lost all its bite. I've had phones in the past go stale with time and ultimately, I was happy to move on. With the Nexus 4, I upgraded to Lollipop and it felt like a brand new phone. It totally changed my mind, but then I started having the storage problems again and despite persevering I just got bored. Maybe I should have given out to the cloud, but as an option as is, I wasn't all that keen automatically sync'ing every photo the cloud. Plus, I never felt Google quite got the implementation of the cloud right. Ironically, my new phone, the Xiaomi, they've got it exactly how I always envisioned Google would do it, in that their Gallery app has a local tab and an 'Online' tab, so you can sync all your Gallery photos to the cloud and instantly pull them, rather than having to go on the Photos app or Drive app or whatever. On the whole, it's just a better implementation. Daft considering it's not required on a phone now kitted with a massive Samsung UHS SD card.
I've sold my Nexus 4 to my old man for £70. About £30 cheaper than what I could on eBay but I couldn't be arsed with the hassle. He'll use it and it'll be a great phone for him (his S2 is as good as dead it's that slow now).
Unfortunately, I wanted the Nexus 6 but Google let me down by overpricing it. If they'd dropped the price of the N5, I might have considered another go, but I'm not willing to pay full price for a phone that is a year old. No chance.
I guess I should have upgraded to the N5 when it first came out... but hey ho, we live and learn. I'm now a Xiaomi customer lol
I wouldn't get a Xiaomi as i'm worried about OS updates.
You say KitKat was awful for you and Lollipop rejuvenated your N4 but my case is different. KitKat was the best for me, apart from the pulldown notification bar which was laggy sometimes. 5.0 was the worst thing i've ever came across. I was less frustrated when i was on Bada OS on my old Samsung Wave III. I'm now on the unofficial 5.1 port which is even better than KitKat.
If i were to compare 5.0 and 5.1 on the N4, 5.0 would be an old Ford Focus and 5.1 would be an V8 Aston Martin. Unbelieveably slow experience on 5.0.
The Redmi Note 4G is in some ways a downgrade, IMO. Can't argue too much though, given the cost. Better camera, SD slot (but less native storage), bigger screen, bigger battery. But the SD400/Adreno 305 is inferior to to the S4 Pro/320 that the Nexus 4 has, despite the tick higher clock speed. But if it works for you, then great.

Interestingly, I think you'd be surprised that Xiaomi seem to have a decent reputation for updates, but more importantly there's a massive userbase. I was astonished by how many custom roms are already appearing and there's already a pretty stable cm12 except minus the camera.
Lollipop was a huge upgrade for me on nexus 4. The phone was fast and felt supercharged. To be fair, perhaps I was lucky.

the GPU is a downgrade but I'm not a massive games player. The less native storage is solved by folder mount. The CPU is about the same, roughly. Perhaps a tiny downgrade although Antutu puts this above the N4. It also brings new connectivity in 4G and better WiFi I believe.
The cost is unbeatable.

How long have you been using Nexus 4? I decided to move on to Galaxy S6 and try 3rd party zl or mpj external battery case. It has been two years since bought the Nexus 4, but now Phone gets hot and battery rapidly discharges

Goodbye buy then.
i can't understand why "new thread"?
Well, a quick update. It didn't take long, but I'm currently flashing ROM's left right and centre lol, trying to pick which one I prefer the most. There goes my genuine attempts to avoid flashing any custom ROM's and giving it a chance to impress in its stock form.
CM12 is seriously good but missing camera functionality at the moment. Everything else is stable but the camera is a killer for me.
CM11 is fully stable so I think I'll end up settling for that.
MIUI6 is fantastic in it's ways but unfortunately, is a bit too overwhelming. Too much pretty stuff at the expense of genuine usability.
MIUI5 i've not tried yet.
Here's the thing though, I'm already embracing my ability to use an SD card. I could never perform a full Nandroid on my N4, realistically.... I've already got one for this phone... and I've got a load of ROM's dumped so I can test.
Performance wise, I'd say this phone is about the same or slightly less than the N4, but the fact it has an FM radio a SD slot, and a few other cool features makes up for it.... and the big screen, which does a cracking job of trying to look HD (it isn't quite HD).
One feature which CM12 is offering but I'm yet to try is an FM Tx. Now that would seriously be an incredible feature if it actually works. Probably doesn't though to be fair. However the MI3 and MI4 both have FM Tx's so who knows?
In truth though, I do miss the N4. It had a certain charm about it that this phone doesn't have. This phone is a budget phone, and it's very obvious. The Nexus 4 was a budget phone, but was built like a premium device. I really do feel like I've gone from a premium phone to a budget phone and it's certainly noticeable to a degree. That said, the touchscreen feels more responsive than the N4 and the colour reproduction is superior. The battery also blows the N4 out of the water and I have to say, it's amazing how long you can get out of this phone. I'm a serious power user, so the N4 really wasn't appropriate for me.... but this is ideal. The N4 however, is the first phone I've ever owned that I didn't hate by the end.
It's a shame the LG Optimus G had no SD slot either. I would have happily gone for that.
Regardless, happy at the moment and enjoying the liberation of plenty of space. I'm still watching the price of the Huawei Ascend Mate 7 though. That's a fantastic beast and would be my first choice if it wasn't so expensive.

Could you please point me in the right direction as to where and how to get unofficial 5.1 port? Waiting for OTA is sooo frustrating

I'm wondering if Google will put out a 5.1 release. Quite obvious that the Nexus 4 hardware is easily capable, so really, it will be down to whether Google are ready to kill off the old girl. At least you know with Nexus that there will always be custom ROM's available to support you down the line eh?

Good stuff. I think in a time where phones are now becoming almost too powerful, the only thing that Google need to get sorted is that the updates keep coming and that manufacturers should be expected to provide them too.
Thanks for sharing
Best of luck to you and your new device
Ha, one benefit of this new phone. For some reason, Three don't know when I'm tethering lol
I'm enjoying all the Tethering'y goodness, without the limits lol.

This should be perfectly possible on the Nexus 4. I do it with T-Mobile here in the US.
I purchased my 10.5 new five years ago this month. But it's starting to show it's age. When it started slowing down about two years ago I installed a new battery and it was like new again. It's starting again, but I don't think I'm going to bother getting a new battery because there is another issue. I use it everyday, and about once or twice a week it just completely shuts down while using. No combination of buttons will get it to boot. The only solution is to connect it to the charger. Once I do that it will boot up and work fine again. I'm using stock ROM now for the past year but I used Lineage for a couple of years in the past. I may try it again to see if that will make a difference. In the mean time, I purchased the latest iPad mini. I'm not a fan of ios but I purchased it specifically to use with my expensive DJI drone. I'm finding myself using it for other purposes now but I much prefer Android. So today I'm expecting delivery of a 2019 Gallaxy Tab A 10.1. I don't want to pay a lot on another tablet again if I can find a decent fairly cheap device that does what I use it for. The one issue I had with my Tab S is the stupid 16gb of RAM on a $600 tablet. The Tab A has 64gb.
I have Oreo on mine with LineageOS as my daily driver. I highly recommend it, you'll be glad you did. I feel like it was given a new lease on life. I'm considering an S5e for my next but I can confidently say the Galaxy S Tab is definitely still rocking out after 5 years, I was just discussing this very thing with a friend.

Does Netflix work on the version you're running? If so, do you have a link to it? That's the one app my fiancee NEEDS.
anyone looking for a 5 year old one that is still rocking head to Swappa or Ebay - my rare T705M is for sale (this is the Latin American version that gets the U.S LTE bands - cellular voice calling like the 705 but better due to the band coverage)
swappa listing LRVC37794 or search SM-T705M on EBay

Search for Netflix apk. Several apk repositories keep track of it. Get the armv7 version.

You're not using your 10.5 a lot, aren't you? I have already destroyed two, and now I am "working on" a lightly used 8.4.

I had Lineage for quite awhile. I went back stock for about a year, but I just flashed Lineage again a few days ago. Don't remember why I went back to stock because without all of the Samsung bloat it runs smoother.

I use it every morning. Before I get out of the bed, I use it to read the news and social media. I also play a couple of games. I just flashed Lineage a few days ago and it's running much smoother again. I purchased a Tab A 10.1 a couple of weeks ago but I returned it, because even though it's much newer, it was too much of a downgrade, especially the screen. The only thing better was that it had 64gb of storage compared to the Tab S 16gb.
I'm using my since February 2015, if I remember correctly ... . It's still running like a Swiss clockwork
I'm on DarkExistence lineage because his AICP seems discontinued since a while already. My favorite was SLIM at the beginning.
The next tab could be S5 without “e“, if it gets so light and thin like S5e but with pen and hw power like like S4 ... .

My T800 10.5" is 5 years old this November, I have used it virtually every day and i am still on my first battery, I only watch video`s and read ebooks so nothing that`s hard on the tablet like some modern games can get the tablet very hot and drain the battery quick is not good if you want it to last a long time.

Hello, with that use of yours, how much longer do you think you can have left, another 5 years? I also use it for multimedia and nothing else. My tab S 8.4 is 4 and a half years old and the battery is 1 year old because I changed it to a new and official first quality one. I am very happy with the quality of your screen and with its battery, it easily reaches 10 hours of screen in a week of use watching Netflix basically

I cannot really say how much battery life it has lost but it must have lost something, I only use it for an hour or so a day before i go to sleep i try and protect the battery with a special charging regime to keep my battery alive as long as possible.
I think my battery will just fail suddenly in the next couple of years, But the battery`s are easily enough to replace after watching a few youtube video`s
