I have D405N on Lollipop 5.02.
What is the best option in mobile network for better battery life with non stop Wifi connection, or what you use:
1) WCDMA/GSM (WCDMA preffered)
2) WCDMA
3) GSM only
Thanks.
GSM only. GSM (2G =Edge/GPRS) uses less battery than WCDMA (3G). Just be aware that it drops the connection during a phone call (you can't do voice and data at the same time with 2G).

what is the difference between these two settings on my N1? i get 3G/H with either setting, and they both switch to Edge around the same coverage areas too. PRL seems to have ever-so-slightly better dBm power readings, anyone else seen this? both seem to have similar network performance too (based on download speeds), should i stick with one or another? which gives better battery life?
TIA!
Hope this helps!!!
GSM Only - Only uses in G/E and never switches to 3G/H. Should have minimal battery usage.
GSM Auto (PRL) - Automatically switches between G/E/3G/H based on the PRL (Preferred Roaming List) for a provider on your phone. Not supported by all providers and may not be supported in certain regions. Should have moderate battery usage since it uses a predefined list to switch.
WCDMA Preferred - Automatically switches between G/E/3G/H based on the best/strongest signal available and is supported by all providers. Has high battery usage since it constantly scans the network for the strongest signal to switch.
WCDMA Only - Only uses HSDPA and will not switch to G/E/3G even if the HSPDA signal is too low. Use this only if you use your phone in a area with good coverage. Should have moderate battery usage.

thank you!! where'd you find this info?
There's a huge thread on this already. Gsm auto (PRL) gives me much better battery life over wcdma preferred but we really don't know exactly why. Both give you 3g and edge access.

i'm discovering the much better battery life as well, pleasantly surprised to be at 70% after coming off charger 11 hours ago!
do you have a link to that thread? i searched before I posted but couldn't find anything of value. xda is a great resource, but sometimes info is difficult to retrieve from old threads. thanks!

I believe the fact that GSM Auto (PRL) uses a predetermined PRL to switch between G/E/3G/H vs. the phone constantly scanning to find the best signal in the case of WCDMA Preferred is the reason for the better battery life.
many thanks for the responses guys, much appreciated!

My carrier has bad 3G operation, whilst HSDPA works fine. The problem is that phone sometimes switches between 3G and H, and when it does switch to 3G, there is no internet until it swithes back to H or down to E. I'm almost sure that this is caused by carrier, and I can't fix it with firmware. So I would like my Tab to avoid 3G mode at all, while using H and E. Can I set it to do so?

Unfortunately, it's impossible, you can either choose "H" & "3G" with wcdma/umts or "G" & "E" with GSM in Mobile Networks. You can't choose to leave out 3G when it's doing H, cause both of them are under wcdma mode.
Of cause, if you leave your "Network mode" to auto, it will jump around gsm and wcdma when it see fit. By choosing it to run GSM mode only, will keep your network connect to "E"/"G(gprs)" ONLY; Or WCDMA for "H"/"3G" ONLY.

Hey guys,
I was wondering what the difference between GSM and UMTS is, according to the settings of the LG Optimus 2X I can select GMS or UMTS or both.
Couldn't find the answer anywhere so I'm asking it here.
How do you guys have the settings set?
Using T-mobile btw (Netherlands).
Thanks in advantage
Hi,
I think gsm mode is called as 2G, umts as 3/3.5G ... 2G mode is save your battery but the data traffic will be slower. You can switch between them in settings/wireless settings/mobile networks/ and check or uncheck the only 2G network (or something similar, I've tried to translate the menu names from Hungarian). However, you can find a simple app in the Market to do it easier:
2G-3G OnOff (CurveFish)
Yes, 2G mode saves battery and offers slower download speeds. You can reach decent speed with EDGE @ 20-25-30 k/s. So If you don't need the speed of 3G, you can set the phone to GSM only mode.
On the other hand with 3.5G you can reach very good speeds (800k/s here in Bulgaria), but it drains the battery faster, even there are no active transfers.
So basically what you are both telling me is, just put the phone on GSM/UMTS (automode). Because I often use 3G/HSDPA.
Definitely!
Hi Guys,
I have been having a problem with Ho! No! ROM. I am in India on AIRTEL 3G. Whenever I switch to 2G Network I tend to loose signal and after sometime the signal gets completely lost (EMERGENCY CALLS ONLY is shown). If I remain in 3G only, everything works fine but battery usage is obviously more. Moreover, recently after HO! NO! CM 7.1.3 I am not getting 3G speeds while internet browsing while being on 3G network.
My Mobile Network Settings are like:
Data Enabled: On
International Data Roaming: On
National Data Roaming: Off
Network Mode: GSM/WCDMA(auto mode)
Use only 2G Networks: Off
Do I need to change my radio/baseband according to India (where to find the same and how to do it?)
I didn't have any such problems on CM 7!!!
Please help me out guys!!!

I used MiniMod to switch my base band and now the 2G Signal loss problem is solved. But internet speed is still all messed up on both 2G and 3G. It seems like that this is a problem with HO! NO! ROM rather than base band as my internet browsing was working flawlessly on earlier HO! NO! ROMs without switching the base band.
Hi
I'm trying to get the best Internet connection on my phone. My carrier doesn't support voice over LTE so if I set the Network mode to LTE only I got no calls incoming or outgoing.
The other options I have are 2G only or 3G only, which makes my LTE data plan useless.
Best option is to have it configured to 2G/3G/LTE, but the problem is that when I'm usually stuck with an excellent 2G connection (with useless internet), instead of a not lousy/not great 3G connection, which still has better Internet speed and stability than 4G.
I'm looking to have my phone only see 3G/4G and not 2G, but I don't have a network mode for that. How can I enable the network mode I require?
I'm rooted so if I can enable it somewhere in the system, that is an option.
Thanks in advance
