how to reset phone but still keep root? - Sprint HTC One (M7)

Hello, I'm currently using NuSense ROM on my HTC One and I've noticed that's I'm running low on storage space and its becoming incredibly laggy and slow. Not to mention that it gets hot really fast.
So my question is, is there any way to reset the phone, but still keep root? Assuming that all the files on my phone were of no use to me anymore, pictures, music, etc, how would I go about completely deleting everything while still keeping my device rooted?
Thanks

Root is a function of the ROM you are running. Are you s-on or s-off?

Then you have it easy my friend. I wrote a guide after resetting my s-off phone a little while back. Follow it exactly and you will be reset back to stock. You can then flash TWRP using fastboot and use TWRP to root the stock ROM or you can flash any custom ROM you want which will include root.
Do NOT go back to s-on and do not lock your bootloader. Those are not needed to reset and will just make things harder for you.
If you have any questions while following the guide, feel free to ask in the guide thread or in this one.

Thanks a lot! I'll follow this guide today and I'll let you know how it goes. I'll also report if I come across any errors.
Update: So I followed the directions in the guide and everything worked out great! My phone is back to stock! So, all I have to do is flash TWRP and then flash a ROM and I'll have a clean phone with a rooted ROM correct?
Thanks a lot by the way!

Help please- Need to get hero back to sprint's factory

Hi everyone, I hope someone can help me.
I have read up on how to unroot the phone by flashing the phone to the Sprint's 1.56 version and thought I found the software download to do that. I flashed my phone using fresh-cdma rom that said it was Sprint's factory rom; well when the phone starts up is says fresh and the home screen don't even look like what it had before I flashed it. I have to return the phone to sprint b/c it does not hook up USB on any computer or even ask to hook up that way. It just automatically charges the phone. I hope someone has the link to the factory software I need to flash the phone that way. I cannot use anything that would require me to hook it up USB. Please help as soon as possible.

Ok... I have a question. I restored the phone using the Nandroid restore.. The phone says it is the 1.56 version and looks great. But does that mean it is UNROOTED? Or just the factory rom? If I am not unrooted than I will follow the instructions that you have provided. Thank you

No. You need to install that flashrec apk from the instructions and flash the image provided. This unroots your phone (it is a backup from a phone that wasn't rooted).
Okay... Thank you so much for the quick reply. I will post if I do this and get it right or not.. lol
Thank you... it worked great.
i hate to dredge up a thread from the past, but i need a little reassurance. lol. i did step #1, so is that it? it's ready to go in the envelope and back to sprint now? i confirmed nandroid recovery is gone, and that stock 1.5 is loading, so i guess i answered my own question, but i just wanted to double check.
thanks.

Black Screen, Phone On, But No Backlight

Ok so before I begin, I've read everything online and cannot figure this out. I've searched the forums for hours and still no luck.
I have the HTC One M7 with T-Mobile
I've had it since December with no issues at all, and still in mint condition. Never dropped.
I have it rooted, with boot unlocked
ViperOne ROM Installed, stock kernel.
Ok so Tuesday night I was going to bed (phone still on and working) and plugged my phone in to the charger to charge for the night as I usually do every night. Wake up in the morning and hit the power button to unlock the phone and to my surprise the display doesn't come on. As I said I've never dropped this phone in the entire 9 months I've had it, nor has it ever gotten wet.
This is NOT the first time this has happened either. I've had the phone display flicker on/off and after a couple times it will just stay on. It's also went off and I've fixed it by holding a light to the sensor in the top left and it came on. This time I'm not having any luck.
Please help! It's rooted, with custom ROM, and boot unlocked, therefore I cannot send it in for repair as warranty is voided. I've tried restoring it back to stock the best I can via mirror Android to PC program, but it's very difficult. I've restored it once before, I just don't get why it's not working again with me holding the light to the sensor. Any help and/or suggestions would be greatly aprreciated!! Thank you!

Well issues like this are common with custom roms. You would need to pull a log cat or DSM message and send it to the developers.

If you are not S-OFF, then you will have to relock your bootloader with this command: fastboot oem lock
Then run this RUU 5.14.531.11 That will put you back at stock and if you want to put a custom rom or root you can try it again.

Thanks man! I've tried other RUU's with no luck. So just to be certain, in order to flash an RUU, you need S-Off wit Bootloader locked? Is it not possible to flash RUU with S-On? Going to do this now. I'll let you know. I'll keep you guys updated. Feeling good about this.

Ok so I succesfully Installed the RUU and back to stock rom, but upon rebooting, my screen did not turn back on. I've read of dozens of other users who have experienced this same thing. I guess the next step would be to fully return it to stock, turning S-On, removing tampered, unrooting, etc, and just returning it for another phone. @majmoz

If you successfully ran the RUU, then you are stock with a relocked bootloader. The downside is you have to be S-OFF to remove the tampered and to change the "relocked" to "locked".
If you are S-OFF, then you would have to put TWRP 2.6.3.3 or 2.7.1.2 and install this Bootloader Reset Tool. Then flash a stock recovery. You are now completely back to stock.

Yea. I turned S-Off before I even ran the RUU. So there's one thing I'm confused about. If I'm trying to return to complete stock state, why would I install Twrp or CWM if those don't come with it? Is there any other way to do this? As I have no back-light and it's been very hard to do all that I've done so far. Screen hasn't come on, so I'm working blind here. Lucky for me I remember where most of the buttons are at and with the help of ADB, I've gotten this far. @majmoz

Hey bro thank you so much for the help so far, I really appreciate it. I just have one last problem. I've already talked with HTC and they're going to be sending me a replacement and I have to send my phone back in within 10 days but they said they would be checking for root.
So question 1. When you restore phone to stock ROM via RUU it unroots the phone correct?
Second problem. Now that I've restored the stock rom, usb debugging isn't enabled and I can re-enable it due to not being able to see the screen. So because USB Debugging is not enabled ADB is no longer recognizing it when I run "adb devices"
Because of this I can't turn bootloader, tampered, and lock stats back on. I'm really nervous sending my phone back in like this. I hate to keep bothering you, but you seem to know your stuff a lot more than I, and I'd hate to start a new thread. Thanks again bro.

1. RUU unroots the phone.
2. Yes, you need USB Debugging enabled and a custom recovery (nkk71 uses CWM).
I have been racking my brain all night. This is a long shot, but if HTC is sending you a replacement before you have to ship yours back then here is an idea. With the replacement phone side by side; memic the commands to open Settings on both phones doing the replacement phone first, then the old phone. The location of the items should be in the same place on both screens. It may take a couple of tries but you seem adapt at reading blank screens. I'm still researching a way to turn it on remotely, but this is the only solution I could come up with presently.
When you get USB Debugging enabled, use nkk71's guide to install CWM on your phone. Then complete the manual steps to remove "Tampered" and to "Locked" the phone. Reboot the phone into bootloader per the instructions. Now we need to put the stock recovery back on the phone. You can get the stock recovery out of the last OTA. Download it to your PC, then open the zip file. Within the zip is the firmware.zip, open it and you will see recovery.img file this is the stock recovery. Just extract it and flash it like you did the custom recovery earlier. Going back to nkk71's guide, complete the fastboot command to return to S-ON. Now you are completely stock with no hint of root.
@majmoz
I'm beast! lol Ok so quick update to my problem. So I got the bright idea to use the Power+Volume Down to take screenshots of my display as I blindly tapped and used that as a guide and moved forward to unlocking developer options, then enabling USB debugging. I can now see my device in ADB once again. Should be pretty cake from here. Thank you so much bro! And also, HTC has agreed to send me a new phone, but I must first send mine in. They would have sent me one first and then I send mine in later, but they wanted to place a $600 credit hold on my card. **** THAT. The rep told me they would be checking for other damages as well as if it rooted.

Ok so I've been reading those sites and I know I'm so close to being back to 100% stock, but now I'm stuck. I'm confused as to what order to things.
I restore stock recovery, then lock bootloader, turn S-ON,and remove tampered and return to Locked status?
Here are my fastboot getvar details. Just trying to get this done as soon as possible as I'm also in the process of moving and wont have net here much longer. So as soon as I get this done I can send my phone back in and get the replacement. Really hate being without a phone.

[SOLVED] Understanding Custom ROMS, Kernels and Nandroid backups

Hey everyone,
Like every HTC One M7 International (Mexican?? :crying: ) owner, I'm having some trouble getting S-OFF on my device. While SunShine is a good result, I don't feel like paying 25$ for something I can do with a bit extra work, but for free.
So I got myself thinking out loud: if I were to preform a nandroid backup, install custom ROM and kernels, get S-OFF using FireWater and live happily ever after... will I be still able to return to my original stock ROM and kernel simply by restoring a nandroid backup?

Short answer is yes. But, you need to know that unlocking bootloader will wipe your phone memory clean and also some default apps will be erased too
Powered by non removable 2300 mAh battery
I already have an unlocked bootloader and the phone is rooted. So, just to be sure: will a nandroid backup be sufficient to return to stock ROM and kernel?

Instructions for flashing a ROM/kernel are usually in the first post of the ROM/kernel thread. As long as you do what it says, you shouldn't have any issues.
The exact instructions for performing a nandroid are gonna be slightly different depending on which custom recovery you choose to use. Once you've decided which you want to use (it doesn't really matter, as they all work, but I prefer to use TWRP), I'd suggest checking YouTube for a tutorial on how to do it.
Also, it doesn't matter what ROM and kernel you're using when trying to S-Off, as it's a completely separate process. I'd suggest doing a bit of reading around this forum before heading into it as doing something wrong could easily brick your device (especially when dealing with S-Off).

Will do. Thanks a bunch!
As @KidCarter93 explained, each Dev has instructions for installation. Also, some devs also prefer one recovery over another. I've used both over the past and like KidCarter93, prefer TWRP because it's very easy to understand and get it to do what I want with little thought.
Always, always make a nandroid backup and always read thru instructions several times before delving into s-off. Some methods are confusing to my feeble brain.
Since there's more than one method, find the one that's the easiest to follow. But like I said, read thru them several times to understand what you have to do and what's going to happen at each step. Nothing worse than your phone doing something that you weren't expecting and panicking for nothing. Not good for your heart.

Htc one can't go back to stock

Hi everyone, I 've successfully installed cm11 using Qbking77 tutorial with the CyanogenMod Installer on my htc one but after having some problems with music playback and battery life I've decided to go back to stock.
I've successfully relocked the phone but I can't find the exact Ruu file for my phone and I've tried with other similar ruu but had no luck.
The phone is S On HBBOOT-1.57.000 RADIO -4T.29.3218.08 OS-6.09.401.5
The phone is also stuck in boot loop and recovery mode does not work.
I have found a guy with a similar problem in this site and someone told him to try to run the firmware first and then try to flash TWRP, now the problem is after downloading the firmware file when typing the cmd command adb reboot bootloader it says that it can not find any devices. I'm not really sure what to do now.
Any help appreciated!!!thanks

Firstly, have you enabled usb debugging on your phone? And have you downloaded the most up to date adb drivers and the most up to date HTC drivers?
Because you are s on you cannot flash to downgrade your firmware
Also as your bootloader is now relocked, you cannot flash TWRP either. The bootloader needs to be unlocked to flash custom recovery
There is no RUU available for your phone, so the best option is either a guru reset which will also install stock recovery, or a nandroid backup

about the usb debugging if you are talking before the boot loop happened, yes I had it enable.

You are welcome, haven't fixed anything yet but come back here again with how things are going
The only way your going to get any function from adb is through recovery, using the sideload method. You should get yourself TWRP and flash using fastboot, then boot to recovery and side load a stockish rom, say viperone or the like. I choose not to run CM or any other AOSP rom for the reasons you listed in OP among others. I currently run ViperOne comming from CM and the battery life is not even comparable. Going back to stock is going to be tough per with your version of hboot s-off is not an easy task as of yet.

Reboot to recovery and choose to sideload a Rom via adb - download a sense Rom of your choice. There are plenty to chose from
Unfortunately, your going to have a difficult time going back to "Stock." You can use a custom recovery to flash a "Stock" rom, as stovie_steve mentioned, a sense rom. To you the phone will be "Stock" the only difference here is your warranty is void .

I unlocked the bootloader and rebooted the phone and everything seems to work fine. But now I don't know what I should do... Now I don't think that I want to go back to stock because it looks a bit difficult and I might end up doing something wrong and brick my phone. Is the viper rom good? I've got cm11 but as I said the battery is draining fast and I still got the music playback problem. Is it hard to install another rom? If it's not I'll probably do it.

Personally, ViperOne is the only sense based rom I will use. Its loaded with goodies and stable as they come. But there will be no harm in flashing many roms until you find something you like. Try Viper, do some shopping around, simply do a backup and flash whatever.. dont like it restore your back up. Just remember to have a current back up always. I keep ViperOne and CM installs on the sd as well as backups of both, never know what mood I be in, have the 64GB so I dont mind 5-10GB tied up by these things. Its up to You but Yes I recommend ViperOne,

Accidentally flashed a file to root that was for KitKat (Im on Lollipop)

So I accidentaly flashed the wrong root file thus making my systemui continuously crash. Any suggestions as to what I can do?

Stock recovery or TWRP?
Are you looking to undo what you did without having to do a complete wipe, or are you open to more drastic solutions? Because you can always run the toolkit to reset to complete stock by flashing the stock images over your current system. But that would of course perform a complete wipe.

I dont really mind a complete wipe. And are you referring to this toolkit? http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...l-windroid-universal-android-toolkit-t3048099
if not could you please tell me which one?
And to clarify, I followed this tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fPIYhzWlnw . The file that I flashed to attempt to root is in the description of that.

I actually used this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/development/tool-moto-x-pure-edition-recovery-t2897819 when I was messed around, but I would imagine either would work. When I needed to return to unrooted stock, I believe that toolkit returned me to 4.4.4 unrooted stock, then I just ran the 5.0 OTA once the phone booted up.
The toolkit you referenced is the one I used to unlock the bootloader, flash TWRP, and root my phone. As long as you can get to recovery or fastboot, either toolkit should work to return you to stock. BUT I caution you, I have a pure edition, and these toolkits were made for the pure edition. If you do not have a pure edition, you'll want to read the disclaimers/instructions/other posts to make sure it will work on your phone.
Okay so this escalated quickly.
So here I am being my dumb self , I try to flash TWRP. That goes fine and then I try to wipe my data. After that I reboot it and as its turning on it foes black on the boot animation. and now I cant even get into freaking recovery mode. I dont know what I did but im pretty sure I messed up bad. I need some serious help now and anything is appreciated.

Hey thats an easy fix just load into the boatloader and reflash the rom through mfastboot
edit: you should be able to get all the files you need from his website http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/general/ota-pure-edition-lollipop-5-0-t2932625

Bootloader as in vol. down + power button right? Thats not working too. I also tried other combinations to no luck. And before it was turning on but now its not even booting to the boot animation. Thanks for the link though, if it does magically boot into the bootloader then i'll know what to do at least.
Edit: Okay so theres the charging animation, so thats a start, I guess. Still no luck on the bootloader tho.
Okay got it into bootloader mode!
Now before I do any other stupid thing can somebody just confirm one thing for me? On Graffix's website, this is the img I should flash through mfastboot right
Lollipop 5.0 22.21.11 FULL IMAGE PACKAGE Zip
Just a confirmation because I dont really trust my judgement. Thanks again everybody

Yes that's right remember you only have to flash system
Sorry that my Toolkit suggestion messed you up. I really thought that solution would work, not make it worse.

I agree that Toolkits can make you lazy and not learn how to fix things on your own, but when you need a quick fix and don't have time to figure out what is going wrong, it's always nice to just boot your phone into fastboot or recovery and fix things with a few keystrokes on your computer.
I got it to work guys! Thanks for all the help. It was much appreciated.
