Will the android ask dpi change trick work without root on the note 5? Also, will there be any ui issues if I increase the dpi? As in, make things bigger and not smaller like most people here usually do.

Does anyone know how (if it's possible) to have certain apps default to their Honeycomb layout on the Note? Gmail, Google Music, and Pulse are my biggest wants when comes to having the Honeycomb layout on my Note.
I think I may have figured out the answer to my own question. If I remember correctly, I doubt that the API of 2.3.x supports the "tablet" features of apps designed with Honeycomb in mind.
Maybe this will change once we get ICS though!
Well.. Netflix App is layed out like a tablet...
Some apps use two parameters to determine if to layout as tablet o as phone..
One is the resolution.. Like, I believe, Netflix. A WXGA resolution is almost always a tablet resolution. So the app will layout out as it..
The other parameter is screen pixel density... The Note comes predefined at a 320 dpi, which is a High Pixel Density (hpdi) as seen in apps. The galaxy Tab 10.1, for example has listed a 149 dpi which is either low (lpdi) or medium (mpdi).
So the apps which have a lpdi or mdpi layout defined in code (for Tablets) can show like that.
You can actually change the dpi value that apps "read" from the device by rooting it and with some apps like LCD Resolution (or changing the required file in /system)..
So while the Note has ~300dpi, apps (and Home, and app drawer, and all) will show as ~200 or whatever number you want..
I changed mine to 240dpi to take advantage of the High Resolution and read more onscreen (instead of just view a higher pixel density for icons).. and apps like Opera Mini show as a tablet...
-----------------------------
Of course there are just a few apps running on gingerbread and with tablet layouts.. This will all change a lot with the ICS update in March; and we will be able to view Tablet layouts for a lot more apps..
I agree the Note doesn't use the whole potential of such huge screen software wise. All apps work in phone mode not in tablet mode. Changing screen resolution helps a lot with certain apps but then it gets really hard to use the UI which gets also smaller. I wish there was a way to change screen resolution for specific apps while leaving the rest at default resolution but i already know this is technically not possible at all. I hope our Notes could reach their full potential with next official ICS update ... I'm already looking forward to flash it !
Personally I'm just hoping that ICS will bring the best of both worlds really. Just waiting for a stable release of CM9 baby!
I know most of you with think why would i want to increase the DPI of Galaxy note.. Lets just say a special person needs to use it and requires REALLY REALY LARGE fonts.. The largest possible hopefully.. is it possible to increase the DPI higher than 320? if so how?.. Most apps i found only limit to 320 DPI.. what is a safe DPI can i use higher than 320?.. Thanks alot..
if you need large font, just go to settings, accessibility, and change the font size from 'normal' to 'huge'. that should help with some apps. but i think what you want is lower dpi. fonts occupy a set number of pixels on screen. higher dpi makes the pixels smaller and hence font smaller, lower dpi makes the pixels larger, hence font larger.

Its already in Huge but, the its still to small for him to read.. If i decrease the DPI, The resolution of the phone increases and the fonts become smaller.. I tried it.. So far, i got the screen to go up to 400 DPI and the fonts get larger, however if i go beyond the default 320 DPI, the settings application FC.. Anyone have an advice?

Not sure if and how it'll work for you, but there's a "Font changer" app on the market, which can resplace default Droids Sans font on rooted device with any .ttf font of your choosing.
What you could try - if DPI attempts fail - is finding some readable font which will be bigger on the screen. What I mean is that when I tried replacing default device font with e.g. Segoe UI or Tahoma or Calibri (copied from my Windows), some of those fonts were visibly smaller or bigger than Droid Sans - maybe there is sth that's much much bigger than the rest - Arial Black or Impact perhaps?
also - CyanogenMod builds for other devices had small app called Spare Parts, which enabled changing the deafualt font size for all apps. There is similar Spare Parts app on the market, did not try it, but maybe it also has the same ability

The higher the DPI the smaller the fonts will get. Best try to get some large fonts installed. If you are able to change DPI then it means you are rooted so try Absolute System Root Tools or Jrummy Root Toolbox and both have a lot of fonts ranging from small to large and they change the fonts of every text on the phone !!!
I also thought higher DPI, smaller font size. But indeed, higher DPI, bigger font size (like in PC Display)
on ICS, Changing DPI causes bootloop
Has anyone noticed that making these changes on ICS causes the phone to fail to boot? Quite annoying, as I'd like to make better use of the screen estate.
Actually if you use romtoolbox it wont fail at boot. At least with fpi bigger then 219

The rom have a Nexus 7 UI when it the dpi is set at 160, but the font is way too small.
Scaling up to an higher dpi (e.g. 213 dpi, same as nexus 7) results in a phone UI instead of the nexus 7's.
Also apps appear have some grafical issue to handle such dpi and are formatted for the phone UI style.
I want to be able to have a Nexus 7 feeling rather than a large phone UI, and be able to read without squeezing my eyes, but I don't know how to do, or what to trigger.
FYI I already set the font size bigger, but it works only at a system level, within the apps the font size seems not to follow my settings.
I'm making this thread because I'm curious if its possible to change the resolution of the Galaxy Note 4. I want this to exist here in case anyone else decides to search something similar.
This came to mind because I've noticed while on CM12 that there was a greater resolution and that apps such as KIK or Snapchat had more content on the screen then when I was on stock KK. So is there a way to have a similar resolution in Lollipop in KitKat?

Yes that's exactly it. The dpi is lowered in CM12. I'd like to change the dpi overall for the stock Note 4 ROM, it should be possible because I notice that on App Settings on xposed you can do this but for individual apps

You have to edit the build prop and change the dpi from 640 to whatever you desire. There are apps that guides you through and buildprop edit is an app that will load your buildprop file for you (without a file explorer) what to keep in mind is unlike stock (and all the rest of the phone company out there smh) touchwiz is the only IOS where apps will not look normal. Camera will appear far right corner, dial will appear for left, etc etc. So you will need to use app settings to readjust them
hope that made some sense!
So it works and everything looks fine but the lock screen is a little off. I used textdroider DPI. Worked well but lock screen needs to be properly positioned.
Tht is one of the apps that will be messed up
This thread should help: http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...anging-note-4-dpi-settings-to-change-t2923408
Well as many of you may already know, the apps to change dpi work but not completely. All the existing methods do change the dpi but not the dpi of the notifications system ui... The text and the tiles look too big etc.
See the attached screenshot to know what I am talking about...
So I found a way to do it by editing a file, you will need to have root and a root explorer like Solid explorer or other app.
The file is located in:
/product/etc/prop/local.prop
The lines you will need to change are these, just replace the value 640 by your desired dpi, personally I like 480:
sys.rog.density=480
ro.sf.real_lcd_density=480
ro.sf.lcd_density=480
persist.sys.realdpi=480
persist.sys.dpi=480
After that, save and reboot.
The great thing is that you will be able to still use the slider under Settings/display/View mode
And make the interface bigger or smaller...
This way the dpi will stick after reboots and even after flashing another system.img.....
Could this be worth to change the dpi in a p20 Pro?
