Hi . I been noticing a "brunt plastic" smell on my Spen .
Could someone check if it has the same smell?
I notice this from day 1 till now (2 weeks) and the smell has not gone away.
The smell sometimes gets very strong and i suspect its the heat from the phone heating the pen up , causing the plastic smell.
I searched forums everyhwere but cant find any topic on this issue.
I did manage to find a Note4/Note3 forum that mention that thier spen has been giving a wierd smell but not sure if its the same.
Im abit worried if its a major problem or just a normal common thing for all note 5.
It's common. The Note 4 S Pen also smelled this way. Just don't smell your pen.
Yes I smell it too. Weird. Because it certainly does not get hot enough to cause that while in the phone...
I smell it too. I'll just pass it off as lead-based paint
Guys not trying to be rude but if your S Pen is within your smelling range you're doing something wrong. Why is the pen so close to your face? haha
Only because I read this post!
Yup, I smell it too and I'm pretty certain I never saw smoke come out of my phone. Probably just the cancerous chinese plastic.

Thx for the reply guys.
Another thing i need to confirm with u guys is that sometimes the pen is slippery and has a wet feel to it.
I don't know if im over-thinking but could it be that the plastic melts and causes that wet feel to it?
I'm seriously considering to send my Note 5 for warranty. Im worried that this may be a huge problem in the long run.

You must have gotten liquid into this device at some point. The Note 5 is good, but it can't generate water.

Its very random when it happens. Been taking care of the phone from day one. Don't think i had it near to anything wet.
Thats why i assumed it to be melted plastic , since it has that burnt smell plastic smell
Wow, you guys must really have senstive sense of smells. I never noticed a "burnt plastic" smell from my spen until I smelled it up close after reading ths post. Yes my spen has the smell too but I doubt I will ever ecounter that smell again unless I intentionally smell it up close.
I don't find it out of the ordinary. Lots of plastics are welded ultrasonically. I was amazed when I first saw an ultrasonic welder in action in the 90s.
It's not melting or the smell of it melting. It's just the way it smells. Plastic smells bad usually, especially low-quality plastics.

Sorry but this is an absolutely ridiculous assumption. People will always find something to complain about. Look up condensation, if anything is getting "wet" thats the likely cause. What environment does this happen in? Are you in a tropical climate, and it happens when you bring your phone inside an air conditioned space?

Im not really sure. Have not noticed excatly when it happnes. I think wet was a wrong word for me to say , its more towards slimy...
Sorry if i sound like im complaining allot .
Part of me flet like it was not normal since no one mention about it. Maybe its just me being paranoid.
Thanks anyway for the reply.
Definitely not normal and I'm honestly surprised you haven't taken it in for inspection.

I went out tonight to a movie. I put my phone in my pocket when I left the house, took it out once to put it on vibrate at the start of the movie then took it out of my pocket again when I got home. The phone was the only thing in that pocket, so it's not like it was up against my keys or anything.
The phone was intact when I put it on vibrate so while it was in my pocket at some point during the movie or the ride home is when it got cracked.
It seems that the part of the glass that's cut out for the loud speaker got pushed in enough that the glass around it gave way and shattered. I don't remember bumping it on anything or it being jostled in any way, just a typical movie and drive home...
I have insurance on it through Tmobile but I may try and call LG directly first to see if they will do anything considering I didn't drop it or really abuse it in any way that I can think of...
So let this be a warning to you if you have one, be careful about that part of the phone. Maybe be careful to put it facing screen-side-out in your pocket so the back speaker cut out can't be bumped...
The glass around the speaker grill is entirely shattered with cracks spider webbing from it to all 4 corners of the screen. The cracks going to the top are hard to see in the pictures, but their there.
Anyone have any comments or suggestions about contacting LG, or anything else about it?

That does not seem like Gorilla Glass anymore. Don't think I've ever heard of a phone just magically breaking without any kind of impact.
How the hell did that happen in a pocket? Hmm
I don't think that the backside of the phone is made from gorilla glass, only the screen. But you still should contact LG, because no way it should blow up like that.
Hope that they change it for you

I wish I had a good answer
I was babying this phone as much as possible, it was the only thing in that pocket and I made sure not to use it when over cement or anything in case it did fall.
But this happened while it was INSIDE my pocket, I even had to empty some of the glass shards out of my pocket when I noticed what had happened...

OK am just not buying the km magic scratches happening on their own or a big crack happening without it being CX caused. These things do not happen on their own..

Haha, no skinny jeans, and it was in my front left pocket.
There was no stress at all that I can think of. When I took it out of my pocket at home to text someone the back felt rough and I thought something was on it, but when i turned it around to look I saw it all cracked. I was 100% surprised to see that considering how I had babied it all night and I didn't even use it the entire night.
There was no case because none are sold yet. When I bought it the store said they would be getting the cases (bumpers I guess) in stock next week, I was going to call them Monday to see if they had any yet, and I still will but I don't expect them to get any until mid week.

Front pocket, and no sitting on my side, just in a movie theater seat then my car seat.
I wish I could just "not buy" it too, but it happened....
Like I said in my first post, it looks like a typical crack you would get from tempered glass when the stress point is hit, and it looks like around that speaker cut out is a stress point. The thing is, it wasn't hit, bumped, dropped, or anything else like that.
If you were the insurance company or LG I would understand not trusting me, but why do I have to gain by not telling the truth here?
Chances are you can just exchange it under warranty, not insurance.

Yea you're right to be careful, my S3 was supposedly scratch resistant, scratch tested with box cutters etc yet still got a huge load of scratches on the screen. Apparently sand/dust in your pockets is the cause (has to be, never dropped it or anything)
I don't know why these videos exist, they test objects that everyone knows will not scratch the screen,
Metal is softer than normal glass, let along toughened mobile phone glass.
Most people do not realize that. My mother for instance puts paper towels on her counter beneath wood cutting plates so the wood doesn't scratch the stone. lol
Plus, there are people here that are complaining about getting magical scratches and breakage.. It would be good for them to watch...

True ... bus has we have soooo many people in here complaining that the phone scratches by himself ... without any object at all ... this test seems fair to me.
The conclusion is ... please fill your pockets with keys, coins and the nexus4 ... it will be safer than to walk with the phone alone in the pocket ...

Isn't it a little contradictory? These videos can't scratch either the back or the screen. But here, people are having scratches out of nowhere. This confuses a potential buyer (like me).
What should I do? Should I buy one?
They're not getting 'scratches out of nowhere' they just don't know how they did it.
Little tiny bits of grit will scratch any bit of glass.

Dust particles or sand make the most scratches from what I can tell. I think you should buy it, I will when I have the chance.
But I'll also get a satchel or something I can keep it in.
Yea people complaining about dust scratching their phone have a defective phone or just really bad luck somehow

Doesn't seem like cracks. Looks like fusing of plastic and aluminum was not perfect, but nothing to worry about.

Well.. called my Local Phone shop and will receive a new back cover. But the cracks.. it should not crack and I think it is a HUGE design flaw.. even more so when more note 4's have the same cracks. A 780+ euro should not crack! Dont get me wrong.. I love the note 4.. And maby there is a little samsung fan boy with in me, but this, I just can not accept this.
I wouldn't call that a crack, it's at the point where metal frame is molded onto plastic chassis, I'd say it's expected to split due to the heat and etc.
Everyone has that on the bottom I think it's normal

Again, you do know that, that plastic and the metal frame are one piece? They don't come apart. In the process of fusing plastic to the aluminum, there are some tolerances, especially considering that it is under the cover.
When you say crack, one assumes, it developed after the purchase. I would probably assume you bought it like that.
And no, all back covers are supposed to be like that.

Dude. You're just bumping thread to try to stay relevant. It is normal, it is hidden under cover, and has no bearing on the look and function of the phone. Does not get worse. Give it a rest. Replace your freakin phone already. Sell it. Throw it in a garbage.
Btw if you started disassembling body of most of the products, I bet you'll find imperfections that are not detrimental and are generally not visible until disassembled.

To be honest with you im not gonna throw my $1000 phone on the floor to test for you xD
But this used to happen with my Note 5, whenever it was dropped the pen would fly out like a rocket.
i guess it is kinda normal because of the push release system, the shock from the fall will eject it.
it would also happen if you swung the phone downwards, the pen would shoot out, however i have not tried this with the note 8 either

OMG! How often are you dropping your phone to notice this? Is the screen ok?
Truth is it's always going to based on where the impact on the phone occurred and at what height. My brother accidentally dropped his from the table onto hardwood floor. The Whitestone Dome Glass now has a hairline crack on it. But the S Pen stayed put in the device. I know a colleague who dropped her Note 5 phone and the S Pen actually shattered inside the Note. Half of it came out and the other half is wedged in there. So bottom line is be more careful and don't drop it!
Don't drop your phone?
lol Bit of a tall order that not dropping of the phone thing, I do understand the intent was probably something more along the lines of "be careful". I've dropped mine and the pen did not come out. I never had it come out on my previous Notes either although there were few tests as I was following the advice above and trying to be careful with them.
Flagship phones represent more than 2% of an average individual workers annual income. If you look at this from an angle of trying to gain perspective imagine instead you're talking about an 850 dollar laptop. Fairly average for laptop pricing and yet I treat my laptops more carefully than I do my phones which now have similar pricing. I think in my mind buying all those phones previously for much less than they now cost has the effect of making them seem to be something of lower cost in my mind although that reality is no longer correct. In other words my perception hasn't kept up with reality. Maybe it's just me but I do know I pay attention with my laptop, with my phone it's just there.
Don't drop the phone. Throw it down hard and the phone and pen will hit the floor at the same time. The pen won't have time to fall out.
Just be careful! DO NOT DROP YOUR PHONE!
The s pen poping out should be the least of your concerns
The 3 or 4 times that I've dropped my Note 5,7,8 the Spen has always popped out.

I droped the phone over the carpet, and s pen popped out too, using ruged spigen case. think rubber acts like an spring.
.
well if we look at the slot, there no real "lock" in the mechanism/design itself
when we pop the s-pen its actually not the s-pen poping but rather the "spring-top-parts" that poping out so we can pull the pen
when u pull the pen there just little resistant to it
afaik the s-pen is holded by small bump in the slot
thus dropping note8 can cause s-pen to pop itself, maybe yours have slot that more loose that causing easier to pop
but other than that i think normal

WHAAA??!! My brain is in there! Or I thought it was...
All kidding aside, it's an expensive investment for some. Dropping it on a continual basis means you risk eventually breaking it and if no insurance is in place, a very costly lesson in life. And the S Pen would be the least of my worries if I ever dropped it. I'd be more concerned that nothing inside got jarred or glass crack. Or worse, the pen snaps inside the Note itself. I want this thing to last at least 4 years minimum before I consider replacing it. That is my ROI expectations on the device after paying so much into it. Which also means making sure I keep it in good shape and not abuse it like a mad man. LOL
Unfortunately, in this day and age, people have become more 'wired'. I mean what's so important on the phone you still have to use it while doing your business in the john?
yes, its a major investment, and, I doubt it will last you 4 years..
that being said, considering what a major investment it is, why do people who have no idea what they are doing with it, want to root it, mod it, flash all sorts of stuff to it without knowing for certain how to fix it if they brick it?

Yeah, it'll just make you usually sit on the john longer than you need to. Then you get ring around the ass. Then there's the risk of dropping your phone in the john!
With that said, I do it too. It's multitasking! If you do it right you're saving time. Getting shi* done while taking care of your shi*.

I mean, to be fair, it is a rather large investment for many users. It's not "just" a phone when taking everything into consideration. Dropping a device like this does cause a fair amount of stress for many depending on the result of that drop. It would be cool to be able to experience these drops without any stress but that's not the case for most of us. Sometimes a damaged phone (especially one as expensive as this one) can cause some real headaches, regardless of how careful we may be.
I do remember @OP, my Note 5 slipping out of my jacket pocket as I was getting out of my car at Best Buy once. S-Pen had popped out but I didn't notice it was gone until I had gotten home. I remember thinking that it may have landed under my car so I decided to go back to the parking space in the hopes that it may still be there. There was another car parked in the same spot so I looked under and sure enough the bastard was right there. It was a bit mauled up, though. Probably by other cars entering and leaving the parking spot. It wouldn't fit back into my Note 5 properly but it still worked on my display just fine.
I ended up ordering another S-Pen directly from Samsung because I couldn't trust the ones I saw on Amazon from third party sellers. Funny enough, I ended up getting the replacement S-Pen for free due to some shipping errors on Samsung's part. So this missing S-Pen had a happy ending after all. Anyway, hope you don't lose yours the next time you drop your phone.

Without knowing the user in question personally I'd suggest it's difficult to cast any doubt. I still run into folks with 3-5 year old phones that are in perfect working order. I can see how that can be more common across the user space just as easily as seeing enough who can't keep units in working conditions longer than a year.
Every time my wife drops her Note 5 out the window of the car while driving her Spen falls out too. This is annoying as the Spens are really hard to find in the gravel on the side of the road.
....not really joking about that
Guy's have you smell your S-Pen in your GN8? Mine smelled like a burnt plastic, is this normal? I don't see any melted parts on the pen either. I'm just concerned.
Lol, my s pen didnt smell. It is too strange, the s pen storage is in the oposite place where we have the exynos and the copper heatsink so it wont be burned by the phone I think. It is near of the battery, did you feel your phone hot? Mine never go warm (under hard use)
I have the GN8 t-mobile. And yeah it heats up with moderate use, like playing graphic intensive games. I'm just worried if it's something out of the ordinary that will pose a greater concern in the long run. ?
the note 4 s-pen smelled like leather, but I don't think the one in the note 8 has a typical distinctive smell.
My spen smells just slightly plastic, and by the way my phone never gets hot, my other notes(3 4 5 7) heated more than this new one
Is the first time in almost three months that I "sniff" my s pen. And yes, smells like plastic, but not like burn one. More like the inside of a PC that is working.
Just pulled my cold s pen out. The tip does smell a bit of rubbery.

I've talked to their Samsung Expert they' ve said it's an excess heat from the device that giving off that smell to the s-pen. And he suggested to take the spen off fof a couple of minutes. Well it does take away the smell but it still returns after i put it back and take out again.
Also he suggested I can file for the warranty if it continues like this. I just got this phone last december . R they gonna send me a refurbished unit?

I know the smell your talking about and it's not an issue. The pen also has a chip in it and that smell is just the smell of computer chips. I have built many gaming rigs in my lifetime and all new chips have that smell. I happen to really like the smell myself lol
I think he just wanted to make everyone smell their s pens.
I think this post is even better than that "light bleed" posts.
