Hi everyone, This is my first post ever on XDA, I bought my New Galaxy S the other day from Ebay (i know.. but box was sealed and everything so all good)
and for some reason my internal storage is only 5.78GB! not 8GB..
I'm really quite annoyed as its a fookin expensive phone, anyone got any ideas??
whats the best mix of firmware / rom for speed / everyday use?
im currently on... ROOTED
PDA - XWJG1
PHONE - XXJG1
CSC - XXJF9
Also my rom is 1.74GB is that the same as everyone here's?
I have applied SU lag fix and the lag fix suggested in the forums and running autokiller set to max, its quick but still some noticeable lag at times.
also i think because of lag fix (su one) I can no longer install ashphelt.
Cheers
same for all models, they took 2gig and kept it for programs apps and stuff and god only knows lol its no big deal as its space we would just fill up anyway, just get a sd card if you want room to play with.
Its normal.
Did you know that even when you have a 80 gig hard drive you can use only around 74?
And that 1.7 gigs you mentioned do come out of 8 gig memory as well.
I've had some performance issue with my Optimus 2X for a while now. It really seems like a memory problem because let's say I unlock my phone, and just want to swipe the pages, it'll hang there for a couple seconds, then it will swipe the page in a very choppy way. But after a couple swipes (3-4), it becomes normal and fluid. This is just an exemple, often I'll try be doing something on my phone and it'll just take forever to load and it will end up saying "xxxx isn't responding, do you want to close it, WAIT, REPORT, OK". Then I just click wait and everything is fine for a little while.. another exemple: Just now I had my GF send me a text message, I click the txt box to reply and it took close to 10sec for my Swiftkey keyboard to show up.
I had been running CM7 for a while and recently decided I could try other Roms/Kernel and it might just help..A month or so ago I went in Paranoid Android, but if anything the phone was even slower.
Last week I went with CM10. At first the phone seemed more responsive but the more apps I reinstalled and the more widgets I put, it slowly became the same again.
I had some free time today and decided to investigate a little further. First a look in the System Tuner Pro app, I noticed my memory was almost full (<100mb left) right after a fresh reboot! There was about 250mb in use.. Then I looked in my "About Phone" page already and it says I have 342mb of memory! isn't this phone suposed to have 512mb?

Well I think this could explain a lot, but wtf is happening to my phone. I can't really tell when exactly the "being slow" started, it seems like it started gradually.
It's been a very frustrating phone in the last couple of months, I decided to end my contract as soon as can get my hand on a Note3, but until then I use my phone a lot.. and need it to work properly.
**edit** : Ok nevermind the 342mb, I searched the forum a little and found out the rest (170mb) is used by the Video Memory. Well, anyway, my phone is slow either way, so hopefully you guys have ideas that could help me, perhaps just tell me tools that could help me find the problem, anything...

This is a common problem of our phone due to the low amount of ram, as you said, 512mb, they are simply not enough. Why do you think most recent phones come with 4 time bigger amount of ram (2gb)?
Man, to keep thus old phone responsive, you have to choose the best rom / kernel for you, and setup them for your needs, first find your favourite rom / kernel, I can suggest you what I personally use, therom cm10.2 by tonyp with kowalsky m1 with 32mb ramhack, for me is the best at the moment, but after all, it is a personal choice, there are a lot of good roms. Well, if you want more ram, so multitask, then you have to use a kernel with ramhack, at least 18% ram spended I'm zram, and something like value 60 of swappiness

Also, I saw you have many notification of apps in your status bar.. This is a phone with a low amount of ram remember it. You seriously can't keep all this app installed, especially if they send you any kind of notification, because if they do it this means they take ram = less ram available = slow phone.
Listen to me. This will surely help you. If you don't still using it, you must try the app GREENIFY, it hibernate, means that if a app takes ram, it will no longer take it = free ram = fast phone!
But if you do it of course you will not receive any notification from it, but it's certainly worth it. What is the sense to multitasking from notification to notification if the switch takes 1 year to do?
For example I greenifyed Facebook, which I don't need in ram as I deactivated any notification service from the app but without GREENIFY it still suck like 45 mb of ram, while doing anything, with greenify it doesn't suck anything! Same thing for Google maps, YouTube, and all other apps that suck memory when I don't need them to, but sometimes I use them so I need to keep them installed, but anyway don't use so many apps that aren't indispensable keeped in ram, because they suck ram, and everything sucks ram sucks the general speed of the phone and a bit of battery remember it. My personal suggestion is when you see that a app that you won't greenify because you need its notification sucks much ram, like 15mb.. 20.. Etc, my suggestion is: unistall it, or if you won't to at least greenify it and use it only when you need to see the app itself, then when you're done greenify it again. and hey, saving ram means that you will save battery too. So speed + multitask + battery. What else?

Yea it looks worse than it is. Out of the 6 icons on top, there's really just 3 that I use.
3G watchdog to keep track of my data plan
Lux autobrightness
Weather app
The 3 other icons were just
USB debugging cuz the phone was pluged
System tuner pro, was currently recording data so I could analyze my problem.
And the last app I was testing to monitor bandwitdth (turns out it did take to much resource)
Also earlier today I installed a memory manager app named Memory Booster, it did seem to help .. just a little.
But alright, I'll give Greenify a try as well.. it sounds good
edit: So far it looks very good, I've freed much more ram with this. But I accidently hide some apps, anyway to bring them back in the list?

stock android data counter does the good job without using any 3rd party apps...
Greenify worked magic, it's night and day with my phone now, good catch.

I've had this issue since purchasing this tablet about 6 months ago, and perhaps it is just THIS tablet, but does everyone have the issue of the tablet being bogged down? What I mean is.....For example, if I click an app, it can take up to 10 seconds for the app to actually open. Also, sometimes the app will barely do anything once it is open, almost as if there is too much processing in the background and the tablet can't keep up.
I have next to nothing on the tablet, and I close my apps when I'm done using them. I only keep open my most used, which is usually only Hangouts and Trivia Crack. If you guys/girls have any advice on how I can speed this thing up, it would be GREATLY appreciated!
I am not seeing this, however which of the many 7" memo pad tablets are you using? I am on the ME572C. I will say that things definitely improved with one of the updates because out of the box it was slower than it is now. However I only ran on the out of the box version for about 3 hours before I updated to the current version of the software. I have never had 10 second lags during launch of an app... I do know that some of the memo pads have less ram than the ME572C and that can cause some stutter on app startup (low ram available for usage). I have experienced that type of stutter on another tablet (my old kindle fire which is on the otterX firmware and it only has 512megs of ram instead of 2gig like the ME572C.

Sorry, I have the ME176CX....I believe it is 1GB Ram. I just haven't read anywhere else that people have complained about the speed. It's really frustrating though.

It does have 1 gig of ram based upon looking it up. If you reboot the tablet from a clean start how long does it take until the problem starts occurring? How long has it been between reboots when you see this problem?
On my kindle fire otter/x before a leak got cleared up I had to reboot it on a regular basis (I had it scripted to reboot nightly) in order to attempt to prevent lag like you describe. Some apps even in the presence of a nightly reboot (and after a leak got fixed) would still take time to launch because the tablet would have to clean out the cached apps in order to get enough memory clear for the new app to run.
If you carefully choose to close apps rather than let android cache them after usage you might find that the behavior you are describing does not occur...(If you already know this I apologize, but Android by default has a tendency to keep apps running in the background, it assumes that you are going to switch back to them). Early on, people used task killer type apps to try and keep certain apps from clogging memory.
P.S. If you have the facebook app installed, disable it or uninstall it and then reboot the tablet, you might be startled at how much better the tablet might then perform...
Hi I'm having this problem as well. Am wondering have you made any more progress in sorting it?

Hey guys, I bought the Asus Memo Pad 7, model number K017, it has an internal storage of 8 GB and currently using 5.42 and I added an SD Card of 29.71 GB. I was wondering how could I release more internal memory, since I believe it's the reason why it's running so slow. I deleted as many apps I could and moved as much as I could to the SD but still not enough.
Any thoughts or tips are welcomed.
Thanks
In the last days I'm experiencing lots of problems with my ME173X-1B071A: always very very very slow (unusable) and overheating.
I bought it 2 years ago and I never had problems before.
Maybe 1GB RAM is too little nowadays?
I think I will buy a new tablet.....
Hi guys,
I stumbled across the problem that my phone recently got slower and slower. I've done some research, which problems can cause my phone to be slowing down that much.
Eventually I discovered the phone's ram to be used to the limit. Most of the time, there were only round about 25 MB free ram, the rest (~825 MB) was already in use. I thought this to be my main problem.
I tried to fix this problem by installing a new rom. I installed liquid smooth from this Thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-mini-2/orig-development/rom-liquidsmooth-t3177000
Earlier I had Carbon installed (http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-mini-2/orig-development/rom-carbonrom-t3193493) with the same issue (high ram usage)
Anyway, after updating to a newer rom, deinstalling some apps, trying to get insight into the ram usage, I still didn't get my phone to be running smoothly.
Do you guys have any suggestions on how to get some more free ram so that starting a single app doesn't kill my whole os?
Or any other ideas how to get my phone to be running smoothly?
Best,
Blue

Its normal for RAM to be used to max. Its how Android works. The phone closes apps to open new ones, etc, etc. Android makes the most of it, not like PC's.
i would look instead for something that could be using your CPU.

Are you killing the apps you open or do you use the return key, clearing cache memory..
Hello my Note 4 is randomly rebooting all the time (it occurs randomly) and is slow (sometimes) when I use apps like messages, browsing the web etc...
I'm on the 6.0.1 marshmallow
I installed the clean master and battery saver apps and things were alittle better but it still is slow and restarts plus those apps are filled with spam and virus links so they will be deleted.
What are my options here to get this note running like new again?

First of all you delete apps like clean master and battery saver cuz this app killing your processor ram and battery .android 6.0 is very well optimized and it can handle everything without any 3rd party app. Just make factory reset, disable apps you dont use ,do not install junk or ram cleaning apps or even battery saving apps, android Marshmallow allready has doze feature that save battery while you are not using phone and goes to deep sleep. go to settings/battery/detail and you will see all apps are in doze.

Any answers on the gentleman's inquiry though? I have a T-mobile Galaxy Note 4, and after having the phone for 1 year and a half, all of a sudden it started acting up last Thursday while I was running my stock 5.0.1, I had it rooted and TWRP on it since I bought it. The phone was a GREAT acquisition and I've always been an Android guy and started to learn about flashing, rooting and XDA since I had my S, S2. I thought that by simply upgrading my 910T to the new MM 6.0.1 everything was going to be taken care of and fixed, but boy was I so wrong.
Could you shed some light on this issue on this great phone?

I think he answered pretty well. You should understand that these phones are, in essence, small computers. And like a computer, the phones will become fragmented and bog down overtime. The solution is a complete format of internal storage; wipe everything, format, cache and start from scratch. Odin is the best option so learn to use it if you haven't already.

Thanks for your reply, however I asked the question to the gentleman as he only said to remove all of those junk third party apps as they were more harmful than anything else. I appreciate the lecture on what constitutes a phone, but I am very aware of it as well as being comfortable of the use of Odin and the rest of the steps. I have already done all that you suggested and the issues still occur after a week. Once again, I appreciate your reply.

No problem. Response was not only intended for you but other members as well since you aren't the only one having performance issues. Only suggestions, you can take or leave whatever you'd like but you might get better results if you try harder to be a nice person.

True! I stand corrected sir. I appreciate your assistance.
Hey guys, so today I tried a different battery cause my was bad and overheating and I can tell this one is good because it also is charging faster than before.
Now I did delete those apps clean master and battery saver like I said I would but I'm still getting random rebooting and slowness, one example would be I was typing a text and the phone took awhile to catch up to my typing and suddenly it restarted itself.
I'm not rooted and my rom is stock. Noticed today that my water indicator underneath the battery has triggered.
So I'm still looking for options...let me know, thanks.
