Yep. I like that too now.
But when I unlocked the bootloader few months back, I was disappointed as the reason was just for the cause of "root" access.

Its my first android and any help will be appreciated and please direct me to where i need to be.
the build number for the phone its 9.1.A.1.145
Yes, rooting is possible without unlocking the bootloader. Please read the All-in-One thread, all the information is in there. Then, use Doomlord's Easy Rooting Toolkit to root.

You never said it was mac
Try a Linux machine, or windows 7
i was on a windows laptop and its not very good and i was asking if there was any mac versions of the root loaders
again,
try linux
i haven't got a linux machine only a windows 8 laptop and an iMac so is there any .sh that will work on mac
Can confirm that option 2 no longer works from the .145 firmware. I need to go back to stock and restore my backup TA to send the phone back for warranty repair. I start the display service test as instructed and nothing happens. I'm on windows 7.

Use mtp (media transfer mode) instead of msc. I had this problem and I fixed it with this method

The solution I found was just to flash a .303 ftf and root it from that. Rooting becomes very easy.
Dear All,
I'm also one of the user who use the Optimus 4X HD..... I always wanted easy solution to root the phone or unlock the boot loader..
Here I made very simple guide to Root, install Custom OS or Recovery...
Rooting Steps
1. Preferred adb tool on the computer, and have installed adb driver. If your not able to find the driver install the MOBOGENIE on your computer it will automatically install the driver.. Once the driver installed restart the computer..
2 Open the link download the rooting tool based on your computer http://www.cydiaimpactor.com/ download the Windows version or Mac depends on the user..
Once Cydiimpactor downloaded extract the folder..
3 on your phone Settings - Developer option - Enable the USB debugging
4 on your phone Settings - Security - Allow unknown source file install
5 Connect your phone to Computer, using usb cable.. (Wait for 30 seconds)
6 Open the extracted Cydiaimpactore and double click the Impactor file..
7 Cydia Impactor will open, you will find option called Start click on start.. it will root your phone in 20seconds..
8 Reboot your phone, install the Root checker apk from google play store.. Verity the root access.
Flashing CWM or TWRP
1 Open the http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager Find the LG Optimus 4X HD
2 Download the CWM or TWRP on your computer
3 Rename the downloaded the file into "" recovery.img ""
4 Copy the "" recovery.img "" into your phone internal memory
5 Install the Rom manger from Google play sotre
6 Turn Flash CWM touch, it will start downloading and flash the same..
7 Now you have CWM recovery on your phone..
Installing 4.4.2 update..
1 Very clear steps written over link with update file..

http://true-android.blogspot.in/2014/01/android-442-kitkat-mokee-rom-for-lg_3.html
If you wish BUY me a beer & click THANKS button to support my work..
@jacksparao, has this been tested?
What's the reason behind downloading and putting recovery.img to phone then isn't using it?

I hate to say this since I'm not a moderator, questions need to go into the Question/Help thread.
Also, you need to read the post (located in this General thread) and do a little search and research to help you. I'm even nice enough to provide you a link (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2686652) which is the Official - the 4.4.2 update - discussion thread.
However,
To begin, you must be on NB4 (the small update that happened a few weeks ago. Also, if you have NOT installed the 4.4 leak, and didn't really do anything to your phone but only rooted.
or
You didn't even root your phone, just can't get passed the 27% of the OTA update, please follow these instructions:
USER BEWARE, THESE INSTRUCTIONS WILL ROOT YOUR PHONE. I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGES YOU CAN CAUSE. THIS IS (please forgive me, my caps lock was on) to help you get the update.
1 ) On you Windows computer, go to http://www.kingoapp.com/
2) Download Kingo and install.
3 ) Make sure you have the required Samsung drivers installed also so your phone can communicate with your computer (use the USB 3.0 cable that came with you phone).
4 ) before you connect with the computer:
A ) go into setting (in your phone) and turn on USB debugging. If you don't know how to turn that on, there is instructions within the Kingo software itself.
B ) Set your screen timeout option for 10 minutes.
C ) Also remove your lock screen to none.
5 ) With your phone on, attach the USB cable. It should connect (you'll hear multiple sounds)
6 ) The Kingo software should recognize your phone and give you the option to Root. Please do so (this will not trip your KNOX flag).
7 ) Pay close attention to your phone's screen while going through the rooting process, popups will happen and you will be asked to click approve various functions that is required for root.
8 ) After root is successful, detach you phone. Go to the Google Play store and download Root Explorer. I have the premium version (it worth the few dollars, plus it helps out the programmers).
9 ) Open Root Explorer (or any file manager with root access) and go to /system/csc/
10 ) Look for feature.xml.bak. If this exists, delete feature.xml and rename feature.xml.bak to feature.xml
11 ) See if dexdump is in /system/xbin/ if not down Download dexdump from Jakman85 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51440984&postcount=313
12 ) Copy dexdump to /system/xbin and set correct permissions. Root Explorer will request the directory to be made r/w temporarily while the file is inserted then put it back r/o, however you still need to set the correct permissions for that individual file. The best way is tap and hold another file already in that directory and select permissions and see how to properly set the dexdump permissions. Make sure the permissions match the other files.
13 ) Check for Update and let it do it's thing, or you can sideload the 2400258.zip file (you can download this from a link earlier in another thread) and install it from stock recovery from your sccard.
Note : on first startup after upgrade I did not have touch screen access but the S-PEN did work. However, you can simply restart the phone to get the screen working with touch.
