Rom for XT1097 - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was wondering if anyone knew of a good rom for the XT1097 that has some sort of "moto display" functionality. I know that it's not possible to have moto display on a custom ROM per say, I'm just looking for something similar (like active display from aosp) that uses the phones sensors. Any suggestions are welcome!

AT&T doesn't want you to unlock your phone in any way possible. Cost me $25 but my battery lasts 3 days now with light usage of course.

My phone is Canadian (as I am Canadian) so I was able to just unlock the bootloader from Motorola's website. Lucky me lol.

Anyone feel like the X is growing long in the tooth?

I love my Moto X and it's features this is actually my second. Although I'm starting to feel like its aging rapidly. Vanilla android is dull in its black color scheme and its starting to wear. Also the form factor is great but I am itching for a bigger screen. Oh and I really miss Qi charging ! Anyone else starting to feel like this?
MOTO X
Sorry, can't agree less...AOSP is the best, I will never go back to anything else. Everyone else spends so much time packing in all of these other apps and features that are worthless to 95% of their users. As a result, updates are slower and in most cases never even happen. Our little guy here will always be up to date with the latest and greatest that Google can whip up.
I will admit that the display size (and resolution) leaves a bit to be desired, coming from one of the most beautiful displays I've ever seen on a phone (DNA). Not a deal breaker for me.
At any rate, the truth is that every single person on this forum has a different "ideal" device from everyone else. If you feel like you want something else that's OK...it's the inevitable reality considering there is always something newer and better out there.
I love this phone and will happily wear it out until I'm due for an upgrade next June.

OK that's fine. I'm not one to shout down a person who doesn't agree with me. Its not that I love the bloat of other OS but the colors of say the LG G3 or maybe a white version of our current vanilla

i don't want a bigger screen and android can be customized to look and perform as you like.
moto x is not aging and i won't feel bad about keeping mine if moto comes out with a bigger one for the x+1.
I'm actually really surprised. My last 4 android phones have been rooted and customized. I love my moto X with stock 4.4.2. I would like to root it and use XPOSED but I'm very happy with it as is.

Oh and I am still really impressed with the speed of the Moto X. I was a little worried after seeing the specs but this thing flies and I get virtually no lag.
I don't know what it is. I'm intrigued by the lg g3 but who knows I probably won't make the switch. I have to actually see it and use it

Yes I agree with you. While I am perfectly happy with the overall function of the X I am bored and ready to try something new. I used to be a flashaholic and going thru withdrawals. Also the camera sometimes pisses me off. I would miss active notifications and voice control though.
a yes and no
well, i come from a sony device in which i used to change roms every week (i know what u r thinking, but yes i had a lot of free time)
that is one of the things i am missing in Moto X (i haven't rooted it yet)
yes the stock rom is not that exciting with a lot of features but that makes the X fly..
i am ok with the stock rom..
If your bored root it and install Xposed, Gravity box has almost every feature roms have ever had. There are Xposed modules to use themes also or install a rom that has the Theme Chooser built in if you want to change the look.
For me this is the first phone that killed my Rom Flashing addiction, with Xposed & Gravity Box I have everything I need and only use the Gravity Box features I need. Gone are the days of waiting/wiping/flashing/setting up my phone when a new nightly has been released. Now I have more time to find and use apps I really like and when I want a small change I buy a new Icon Pack.

+1 I was using HKThemeManager and you can find different themes if you look hard enough. I had my drop down notification look like the gs5 with its color scheme and various other themes. But I decided to go back to stock.

For my use and preference the Moto X is the absolute best phone on the market. I have the opportunity to buy the latest and greatest if I choose to do so and yet I am completely unimpressed by:
-what is on the market today
-the fact that no OEM is focusing on reducing bezel size drastically or improving ergonomics in any meaningful way except Moto with their X line.
-Screen
I've already decided for my eyesight, viewing distance and hand size the 4.7 inch screen is perfect. Anything bigger and I find it harder to use Swype keyboard (I tend to be humble about most things but I'm a very fast Swyper). The max I would go with is 5 inch screen ONLY IF bezels are RIDICULOUSLY small, even smaller than Moto X. Theoretically you could fit a 5 inch screen on a phone the size of the Moto X. But nobody is focusing on this. There still isn't a phone on the market with thinner side bezels than Moto X.
-Active notifications.
Could I live without it? Probably. Do I want to? Nop.
-Touchless controls
I could live without it.
Moto X is the perfect form factor and because vertical scrolling fluidity and frame drops are a problem with Android OS and not the hardware, I don't find that Galaxy S5, HTC M8 are any smoother or faster than my debloated X. At all. I've done side by side comparisons.
For me Moto X is the perfect form factor/weight/feature set. If the next Moto X model to be released is a lot bigger, I will just buy another Moto X as a spare. I like iphone as well (I switch back and forth a lot, the customizability via jailbreak tends to put Android to it's knees but that's a tough pill to swallow for most people here) but I wasn't impressed by the iphone 6 leaks (bezels are not thinner than the 5/4s wth!) AND the fact that iphone doesn't have an official swype (still doable via touchpal and jailbreak but not nearly as good) is kind of a deal breaker for me. Swype is how I learned how to use smartphones. You would probably drool over my speed typing with swype or laugh at my clumsiness with two finger tapping. I feel like an idiot tap typing one handed on an iphone it's SOOO bloody slow
With smaller bezels you will just inadvertently bump the screen with your hand when reaching with your thumb

There are already software systems in place to avoid this in ipad air due to it's small(er) bezels. It's just an algorithm that takes things like current orientation and digitizer inputs to decide whether it will ignore that input or not.
All it does is ignores your thumb inputs while you hold the device with let's say your right hand. 4 fingers are supporting the back of the device and the thumb is clamping the screen. The thumb input is ignored by the OS which then turns it's attention to the hand that you are intending on navigating the OS with (left hand in this case).
Given a very small bottom bezel the size of Moto X's would avoid that issue. And Moto X's bottom bezel is friggin tiny!

Peek is nothing like active display. You have 10 seconds after the notification to see it.
And full time active display apps will burn up the battery on a non moto x device.
Just for the record.

Does new moto x have notification led?

Love what I've read about this phone except for the crappy camera, small battery, and no external SD support. If it doesn't have a notification led I think I'm going with the GS5 as my current GS3 has treated me well for the last 2+ years. Anyone?
No. And maybe you should try something beside a Galaxy. You won't believe how fast and smooth stock Android is and when a phone isn't made of entirely cheap plastic.

With the Moto X you can do that and actually see from which app the notification is without touching it. And with just touching the screen one time, you can read the notification.

So from across the room or even a few feet away looking over (no hand wave over it or anything) at the moto x I can tell if I have notification(s)?
What I like about my GS3 is the color of the led tells me which app the notification is for and I can see it from across the room.
The active display will blink the icon of whatever app has a notification on the screen. It's not color coded like a normal led and you may have trouble seeing the icon from across the room. However, you can just say "OK Google: What's Up?" and the phone will say the time and read any active notification/text messages. (Incredibly useful while driving.)
It will probably have a hidden led like the original X, just hope the brightness can be tweaked this time.

But this led can only be used for charging status? Or did someone figure out how to use it for notifications? If yes then I'll go for it.

It's only for a charging led. I think some cm roms have it worked out for a notification light, ONLY when it's plugged in. You lose the moto features with cm based roms tho.
I just went to Verizon and held the one m8 and old moto x. I'm not a fan of the feel of the m8 and the notification led is so small that it's pretty much useless. But I like that I can flash a pure android ROM (gpe) and it has other good specs.
I love how the old x feels, it's perfect. It sucks that Motorola is making it bigger as the smaller size would have been a big selling point for me.
Tough to decide between the two, or even the gs5.
2014 moto x does have a notification light
And it works for more than just charging
you can just yell, ok google now, news? and the moto x will tell you each notification you have without touch it.
It doesn't tell you everything but it tells you missed notifications

Maybe go look in the 2014 moto x thread and see what those who have one say. Besides you can see it in YouTube reviews
Have seen at least seven or eight YouTube hands on videos, none mentioned anything about a notification light. Will check the new X topic.
Notification LEDs are irritating to me and useless because they don't tell you if the notification is worth your time or not, so you just turn on the phone for nothing a lot. Active Display/Moto Display is pretty damn intuitive.

Well after using the X for two and a half months now I will have to disagree with you
I also at first really liked the Active display, still do, but I would take back the old LED notifications. I just hate to wait some 6 seconds for the notifications to appear on the screen. Also you will have to to look at the display from straight on, with LED notifications you can see it from most angle (not the hTC M series like stupid ultra tiny dot one!), and you can set the colour, so that's damn easy, for me.

It's the same radio chip as the AT&T edition, with bands 3/5/7 (and possibly an unlisted 29) lockdown. Hopefully there will be a way to unlock these radios, and use the Moto X as a At&t phone.
Does anyone have an pure edition with any other FCC id (IHDT56QA3 - full t-mobile) on it?

LTE might be a problem. I think that every band requires its own antenna. And that is a lot of antennas to cover the whole frequency specter. That's why perhaps every model type has only a few antennas. And if you don't have hardware support you can't enable a new band.

I don't think so. The Nexus 4 had LTE radio that you could enable and it was fully disabled originally because it was not certified. LTE worked great once it was one.

The LED is a bit bright so I'm not sure I would call it LOW light, but its the only light in my room. Tomorrow I can take a few with just daylight lighting my kitchen.
That would be awesome. I have OnePlus One right now and it's a great phone for price. I'm debating if I want to keep the Moto X I ordered for $600 or keep OPO for half it's price. I take a lot of indoor pics of kids so I want to make sure I compare both properly before I sell OPO or send Moto X back. Thank you for helping me out here.
How is the battery life in everyday usage? I have a Moto 360 too and I noticed having it paired kills the OPO monster battery faster. I wonder how much damage it will do to X.

I haven't had it a full day yet, so I'll be able to tell you how it is after tomorrow. I have already done its charging. My normal usage is:
Bluetooth/Wireless Data off as I am home. Location on. Screen on auto-dimming. Yahoo and Skype messengers on all the time in background, along with all Google services.
Sleep with earbuds on (white noise helps me get to sleep) 12/1 at night -830am
Wake up and go to my home office do a few phones calls, normally 30min-1hr
Dive about 10minutes for lunch - bluetooth and Mobile data on and either streaming Google Play or Pandora to my car
Plug it back in to battery around 8-9pm to charge back up again.
If I have to go to a client then Bluetooth and Mobile data are on all day. and Music will be streaming the whole time there, about 45min there and 45min back.
With the 2013 Moto X I'd have about 60% battery left at the end of the day, 45-50% if I had to go to a client. 38-45% if getting to client required GPS to get to.

The OnePlus, aside from no OIS and not perfectly tuned for low light, is still one of the best camera right now. The Moto X is not going to take as good photo in my opinion. Not even the iPhone 6 video recording can come close to the amount of details as the OnePlus.
I bought the X expect it to be a slight downgrade, but it should be good enough for day light. The photos here shows it still very grainy in low light condition, this can be fixed using a third party app and manually adjusting the ISO level.
My question would be the same as another member earlier, whether the other bands are usable outside of the US. Where I live, the LTE bands supported are band 3 and 7, which the Pure edition XT1095 supposedly supports. But it seems like it might be on lockdown as suggested by another member. I would love to test it, but it seems like a waste to import one in only to have it not have LTE at all.

[Q] Looking To Buy This, Have Some Questions

Hey guys, I'm looking to purchase this phone for my girlfriend (she is still using the droid incredible 4g lte)! I just had a couple questions that I'd very much appreciate if I could get some insight on:
1. Is the claim for 48 hours of battery life valid?
2. Has a software update been released to allow data and voice simultaneously yet? (This is a make or break)
3. Overall, how do you guys like the phone from a performance perspective i.e. speed of opening apps etc.?
4. Anything I should know such as little annoyances or nuances currently?
Thanks guys I really appreciate it!

I'll answer the first three (from my perspective, of course). The fourth is going to be up to you in looking at the other threads - lots of positives and negatives depending on your perspective.
1) The 48 hours of battery life is definitely NOT VALID. Of course this is completely dependent on your usage. That said, I am a very heavy user and I am getting considerably more than a full day. I usually pull the device off the charger at about 3:00am (don't judge me - I get up that early to hit the gym). When I plug it back in at about 9:00pm I am at about 25% remaining. That is 75% in 18 hours, which I am VERY happy with.
2) The Volte software update has not yet been released. Also, keep in mind that when it is released by Moto/Verizon, it will only work in Volte areas (but you probably already knew that).
3) The performance of this phone (again from my perspective) is absolutely incredible. Now if one of the really smart devs (I'm talking to you @jcase) actually figures out how to root this device, then this will be THE device of the year! Again, from my perspective.
Hope this helps!

As always, the standard VZW answer is "by the end of the year"... The initial update released by VZW was NOT for VoLTE.

Yeah should have guessed... Oh well, we're going to the VZW store today so she can mess with it. She'll probably take a look at the G3, S5, One M8, and Turbo.

Good luck! It is a beast of a phone. And will be even more so when "L" is released for the Turbo. I'm just hoping and praying for root even though it may never happen...

Thanks! I have the One M8 which came with a locked bootloader, a dev had perm root on that thing within 3 weeks I believe! My girlfriend will not let me root her phone haha she doesn't want me doing anything to it that could brick it etc. (although I never have bricked any of my own phones) oh well!

I had the m8 as well. It was rooted and running GPE within 10 minutes of me getting it home. But this phone is actually amazingly responsive even with the VZW bloat (disabled, of course). I just want root so I can run Xposed and Gravitybox. Then all will be right with the world as far as I'm concerned.

1. The claim is 48 hours of "mixed use" That is kind of subjective based on what your definition of mixed use is. If you plan on streaming music, watching videos, gaming for a few hours or even sitting on surfing the web constantly, then, no, you're not going to get 48 hours. But if you use it as a smart PHONE. A few calls, texts, use the GPS to find an address, listen to a little music, a google search or two then throw it on the counter when you get home then I think you could get 48 hours out of it with probably 2 - 3 hours of screen time. To be honest, I can get that out of my M8, G3 or the wife's s5. I feel that the combination of the QHD screen, the active notifications and the always listening features work to drag the battery down faster than it should. They claim the active notifications are light on battery but I feel that they are not. For whatever reason the Turbo seems to have higher than normal idle battery drain (had it on my droid maxx too)
2. already answered
3. It's really smooth and fluid. The bloat has very little to do with the overall performance of the phone. The Moto launcher is pretty light. Not at all like Touch Wiz or Sense and worlds away from LG's awful launcher. Benchmarks are right up there with the S5, M8 and G3.
4. The moto droids are a different beast from the other smart phones with the active notifications, always listening features so if you've always had HTC or Samsung it will take a little getting used to.
The biggest problem I have with the droids is they are decidedly unsexy; it's almost too vanilla of an experience for me

Got a few questions about the phone - Current Turbo user - EDIT for Turbo/VZW users

Update: My post over in the turbo thread. My opinion for Turbo users to this phone.
Well I, after over 3 years, jumped off the Turbo Train. For those looking for a good Moto Phone that you can still have a unlocked bootloader I would highly recommend the Moto G5S Plus.
I was skeptical about it at first, and it is now only Day 3 but so far I am loving it. Yes it is bigger than the turbo (about the same size as the Pixel XL which my wife has) and feels a lot more slippery but about to order a case. The camera is, in my opinion, just as good as the turbo (But i take pictures for work not so much of anything else lol). The Qualcomm 625 is very snappy and man the 4GB of ram? After rooting and turning off a TON of stuff on startup my phone hovers around 50-60% used VS 80-90% Used. My Turbo just hasn't seem to be like it use to be. Even after a clean flash it just was slow and sluggish still (might be some kind of hardware issue though as some people are perfectly happy still). I both cases I am on stock rom for VoLTE. it works decent on Verizion and haven't had any call drops, bad quality, or slow internet. The reception does seem to be 1 bar low that the Turbo though but I can't see any difference besides that.
Screen looks great, I can't see any difference. Only thing is I hate how the power button is below the volume now. The Finger scanner is nice. I didn't think I'd want one but after having one i like it. I use a Pin/Finger combo for boot at least and screen can be turned off with finger scanner as well which is nice. The normal moto stuff like chop and twist are there. It doesn't have the 4 IR Sensors like the Turbo so you cant just wave and see the time/notifications, but if you pick it up the screen does turn on which I only need it for checking time in which i usually picked it up when laying in bed anyways so I'm good there.
The speaker is louder but lacks the bass that the turbo has. I do miss the hardware keys but I had the Razr Maxx HD so i'm use to it.
Battery life so far is to be determined. I just got finished setting it all up last night and turning off a lot of startup items and what not. In a almost 6 hours period, but almost no use, has only gone down 15%. My turbo would be more than halfway gone by now (yes i replaced battery but this one lasted less in a year than the OEM battery after 2). The Turbo never lasted me more than a day anyways (I'm a heavy user).
Over all i like it and would recommend it to Turbo users looking for a Verizon phone that they can unlock and root. On and did i say that root was Free? XD No Sunshine earned in IMO. The Turbo was a GREAT phone but it just wasn't cutting it for me anymore. I will probably use it to play my games that detect root and what not or to play with/backup for now.
OP:
Hello everyone.
As the title says I'm looking for a new phone and I currently have a Turbo. Its over 3 years old and just not quite cutting it anymore (I have flashed roms etc and it just doesn't run the same anymore period). Was looking at the Pixel 2 XL but its a bit too big for me.
Are there any ex turbo users here to came to this phone? I'm looking at this one mainly because 1) decent CPU 2) Good amount of ram (Would be getting the 5gS Plus with 64GB Stoage) 3) AND ROOT!
I'm not too worried about the camera as my wife is the picture taker with her Pixel XL. I just have Work pics of cabling and jobs etc. Not worried about the down size in screen res either. I mainly use my phone for work, and a few games here and there, facebook, etc. So below are just a few questions since I can't walk into a store and play with the phone.
Edit: I'm not a huge custom ROM fan. I have always reverted back to Stock almost every time with my Turbo and Razr HD. Don't use all the fancy extra addon apps. Just a root hider if it still works on here or not for my Pokemon Go really lol but honestly, i haven't even touched that. Mainly use root just for 3 things. 1) Backup Backup backup 2) Reboot app as Turbo doesn't have a Reboot in the menu 3) Since I do IT work and connect to every single one of my clients wifi i have a wifi password app to show me the passwords if i need them.
1) Does it support VoLTE on Verizon?
2) Does it have the IR sensors so that a wave of the hand could be used to wake on screen, see notifications, silence calls/alarms like all the flashship phones from moto since the turbo.
3) Does it have the Chop and Twist to turn on Flash Light/Camera app?
4) How are the speakers for video?
And I think that is it.
Any input would be great.
Thanks!

1. While I don't have a Verizon SIM to test, VoLTE works on T-Mobile USA and based on the IMS configurations on the device, I believe it should work on Verizon. May be worth calling and asking Motorola directly.
2. All phones now have at least 1 IR sensor on the front for facial detection, it's located at the top of the phone just right of the front facing camera. This phone does NOT have the 4x sensors older moto phones had for better detection. It also has a basic version of "Moto Display" for displaying notifications while the phone is at rest, and I don't think you can customize how it's triggered (aka wave over the phone).
3. Yes, it has those features available, as well as using the fingerprint sensor for navigation, and flip to silence just to name a few.
4. It has a single bottom firing speaker which is OK, but by no means impressive for quality of volume.

Just to add
Volte is working, on stock and 1 rom I know of reliably - pixel experience (which is basically stock - don't bother with other roms). I'm using it through straight talk and no problems.
Stock camera works, that's about all you can say about it. Shouldn't be a problem for your usage.
I hear magisk works, if ya get the right version. That's all I can say as I only use su and don't have a need to pass safety net (no problems - stock and custom).
All in all, for the money, it's a decent device, and you wouldn't notice the drop in screen res (1080p is way more than enough for a small screen).
Coming from a 6p (after the big cores died) I've been very happy with it in the 3+ months I've had it.

Yea I may shoot them an email. It just sucks because all their good high end stuff either is Verizon Exclusive which means its going to be locked down tighter than fort knox, or doesn't support Verizon at all. This one, and the X4 seem to be the top two contenders. I want to stay Moto. for the most part it sounds like this phone would work for my uses even though the big reason of hanging on the Turbo is the 4 IR sensors for the whole wave thing and what not (honestly I just do it to check the time and nothing else really XD so I could live without it). There were some turn offs for the X4 though, mainly how it is more of a amazon phone and I don't care for alexia and bootloader is still locked. This ones seems to be the best for tinkerers who want to stay on Verizon honestly. I have another 32GB Turbo but I have tired to use it and it just doesnt work as good as my 64GB.
So next question would be battery life? I mean my turbo is dead in less than 10 hours now so anything better than that is good haha

I mean, this really varies on your usage, and the apps you run. With that said, my G5S Plus when used as my daily driver has no issues making it from 7am til 11pm with some juice left on the stock firmware, without root.

Fwiw - I haven't had a device that got this much sot (my usage has been very consistent over the years). But, as already mentioned, battery life is all about usage. This time of year I'm using it 8-10 hrs a day. Mostly surfing, light gaming, some music - haven't been below 25+% battery left yet.
Thanks guys
Yea i mean I went from easily the whole day (or at least 14 hours off the charger on a "normal" day meaning me not using my phone to remotely look at the camera's I am installing to set them up right lol) to maybe from off the charger at 5am to like noon is 25% now. Thank goodness for Quick Chargers at least.
Well I went ahead and bought the phone from Moto. I figure i got 14 days to test drive it and if I don't like it I'll just say I had issues using it with Verizon lol either way I have yet to be let down by Moto yet I have not had one since the Lenovo take over. I will live without root for the time being (Just load my apps and not restore them in Titanium Backup) and just see how things go.
Like I said i'm a stock kinda guy. Only apps that i really have running all the time is Nova launcher, Drive Sync, Text/Call backups, BlueTooth, but I'm sure it will run way better than my existing phone. Even if the battery isn't as great at the turbo when i first got it if it last me all day i'll be happy.
