Having trouble rooting phone in order to recover deleted files - Mi 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to recover a bunch of deleted photos on my phone but all the recovery software (Fonepaw and Dr Fone) fail saying they are unable to root the phone. I've googled the process for my phone but it always points to the Indian build or downloading & installing a Developer rom. As I'm trying to recover files I'm cautious about unnecessarily copying new files onto the phone. Posts also make mention of build numbers 15-34 and none of my build numbers correspond to that. Under settings it has:
Xiaomi MI3
MIUI 8.0 Stable 8.0.1.0 (KXCCNDG)
Base band version DM_BASE_13A-8803G_W13.44 | 20140120092332
Kernel version 3.4.35-g8f1d7b1
Build humber KTU84P
Any tips on how to root the phone without installing a new OS?

Download super su zip and flash via cwm or twrp

Respectable Sir,
My Dad's Honor 3c LCD had some hardware issue to troubleshoot i tried to upgrade to KITKat but the problems with the screen was persistent, i sent it to the service center but they said the warranty is void unless i restore it to the stock version (Picture for the version i need to restore is attached).
1. I restored back to Honor 3C (H30-U10) to B108 Stock JB Firmware (V100R001C900B108) but they said i need to restore back to the version it came in ...
2. " Honor 3C (H30-U10) to JB Firmware (V100R001C900B110) THIS IS THE FIRMWARE VERSION I NEED BUT I CANT FIND IT ANYWHERE "
Kindly treat my email as an SOS .

Yes, indeed, LiveTWRP will no longer work on newer builds, i am afraid you will need to flash the recovery to device if you want to use it.
After all, the 'Live' version is a bonus, and without source i have no idea what they did that caused it failed to boot.

Live TWRP part confirmed, it can no longer be used with newer EMUI version.
For sdcard problem, can you confirm your device is H3C H30-U10? Not H3W or other variant? Intl. or China set?
I would suggest you to try the following:
1) Reset TWRP settings
2) Try other SD card, different brand if possible.
3) Smaller storage size, eg: If you are using 16GB now, try one with lower size like 8GB, 4GB.
4) Format the SD card with android, remove any extra feature such as sdcard encryption.

I believed you have it connected to internet and checked for update and there is no OTA available for your device, correct?
Unfortunely HW has removed the download link for B110, i do not have any backup for B110 either, i didn't download it earlier.
For now i think what you can do it ask your friend or some else with B110 to do a TWRP backup and use the backup to restore.
You need to restore /system & /cust partitions only, once you have done that do a factory data reset from a booted system.
I wish i could help more but i have the slowest internet on the planet so nothing i can do here.

TWRP B110 backup from your country? Yea, that would be fine too, but if you have the B110 UPDATE.APP that would be better.
I am not sure if B108 locked BL could survive TWRP restore without first soft-bricking it, i didn't try that, or i tried but forgot ...

Hello! I downloaded the firmware EMUI2.3_H30-U10_4.9.1 and did everything you wrote, but after extracting the firmware by HuaweiUpdateExtractor_0.9.8.0 I did found in the folder the file '_PrepareFiles.exe' (item 13 of your post)! What is wrong? Thank you!!!

dear sir,
it is great to have your guide with me, i just wanted to make a suggestion, at the point where you have summarize the steps for installing kit kat on international hand sets, please write an instruction that all international users must have unlocked their phones, before rom update, so after upgrading they could run live TWRP easily.
Thanks and regards once again.
Hello! I downloaded the firmware EMUI2.3_H30-U10_4.9.1 to flash the phone by Flash Tool. According the guide "Restoring Official Stock ROM using SPFT" (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...809&postcount=) after extracting the firmware by HuaweiUpdateExtractor_0.9.8.0 the file "_PrepareFiles.exe" must be appear in the folder with extracted firmware. But in my case when I extracted the file "update.app" I did'nt find the file "_PrepareFiles.exe" in the folder (((( What is wrong? The NET.framework v.4.5.1. is instastalled. Thank you!

MI3W - Unroot Device

Hello everybody,

Baseband version : M8974A-AAAANPZM-2.0.6013
Kernel Version : 3.4.0-ga568004-00677-g9eb30dc
I got a few question
- I already download the latest stable ROM version from Xiaomi official website but i can't install/flash the ROM because i can't find the Updater icon or updater.apk (place the ROM in the downloade_rom folder)
- I extract the zip file and found the updater.apk but got "Parse error" when try to launch.
- I already rename it to update.zip put it in SD card folder and try to load it via hard reset but it can't find the file.
- I don't know whether my phone is already rooted or not.
- If rooted how to unroot seems i can't find the unroot version for my phone.
Please help me on this because i already so many way but still failed. I don't have a problem when i upgrade ROM on Redmi Note 3G and it working perfectly.
Thank you in advance and really appreciate for helping me.
Thanks and regards from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Firstly you can authenticate your product here http://www.mi.com/verify/
as it is second hand all doubts will be cleared about duplicate device.
After you have verified it you can download latest miui 7.1 file.
Search for this name "Xiaomi Mi 3 CDMA/WCDMA Latest Global Stable Version Fastboot File Download"
on the page http://en.miui.com/a-234.html
actually it also describes the method to flash it . I am suggesting fastboot method as you are unable to find updater app.
Hope it helps.

Stuck & frustrated with Fash & Root Xiaomi Mi Note

Hi all,
I am kind of very frustrated with my new Mi Note. I have wasted the whole day today trying to find out how I can archive the following:
1. Get a Rom with supports either Germany or Ireland as region
2. Root
I have tried various things such as TWRP and CWM but I am not making progress. Status as of now is that I a have MIUI 7 Global 5.12.10 Beta and TWRP 2.8.5.0 on my device but root checker say *no root* and still the regions I require are non existent. Basically back to were I started.
I hope anyone of you can help. Thanks in advance.
Take a look here http://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/6-1-7-11.29342/
Its 7/1/2016 version that has bootoloader unlocked.Try to flash with TWRP 2.8.6.0
Get a better TWRP version from this post and use it to flash a Xiaomi.eu ROM. European language translations and root access are included by default. I've been using their version 5.12.31 (with some changes I described here) and I can confirm it's been working well. The newer version 6.1.7 seems to have no significant changes so it shouldn't introduce any new errors as well if you use that instead. I'd avoid any later versions for now until the bootloader lock-related problems clear up.

Backing up stock rom before flashing another

Hi
I have been following the thread for the linage os in the View 10 forum.
Several people have reported it working on Honor 9 Lite which is treble compatible, before I try it out however I wanted to be sure I could go back to my current rom which is the official LLD-L31 for the UK honor 9 lite.
My current build number is LLD-L31 8.0.0.121(C432)
What options do I have to restore if I don't like the rom I flash?
So far I have managed to pull the System & ODM folders to my pc. all except the Vendor file due to a permissions error.
Is this enough? Can I simply push these folders back? and at which point do I attempt the push? When booted/in recovery etc?
Otherwise, Is there an official or unofficial Huawei/Honor restore tool? or maybe a full rom I can flash? HiSuite says it has this function, but my device isn't listed.
Sorry for all the questions, it's been a while since I flashed a rom & it was always via TWRP I understand treble roms are flashed via the stock recovery though

I have the same model and have also been following the thread. My understanding, and hopefully someone will correct if wrong, is that with project treble GSI you're only overwriting, via fastboot, system.img partition, therefore if you want to return to your original I suspect you can do the same thing again and fastboot original.img with a factory reset.
There is a utility called huawei firmware finder which allows you to look for firmware. I tried it but can only find the LLD-AL10 8.0.0.100(C675CUSTC675D4) which i think is for the 4/64GB veresion or may even be for the huawei P smart. Until honor make the firmware available not sure what other options exist.
BTW it would help if you report back with any success/failures if you try it. Also interested in what this version Lineage OS is missing/not working, I think the camera still has some issues last i checked the thread.

Thanks for the reply, I suspected that's how it worked, just flash back the original system image.
I think I'm gonna hang fire for the time being until I know I have the correct firmware to go back if needed, hopefully the camera will be sorted by then too.
I flashed a firmware today and couldn't revert to stock because can't find it. Any ideas?

When you unlocked your bootloader and before you overwrote your system partition you should have taken a backup of your stock system partition so you can restore it. Honor has not made the firmware available yet as far as I know.

Just in case I decide to try this, how do I get a flashable file?
I pulled the contents of system + odm via ADB but just ended up with 2.3GB of folders.
Can I convert this to a flashable .img file? Or should I have done this another way?

found description for how to do it for v10 on another site:
adb shell
su
dd if=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/system of=/storage/emulated/0/system.img
this implies root is required so I guess you would:
1. unlock bootloader
2. load TWRP.
3. load root (su).
4. reboot back into TWRP and save system.img.
However, you make it work you need to make sure system.img is saved before any changes are made.

I was thinking about this today & came to the same conclusion.
The idea is to pull a clean unmodified system image, but the only way to do that is by using root privileges SU, then via TWRP - Does that not make it a modified image?
Maybe I'm thinking about it too much:silly:
What Root method & TWRP versions have Honor 9 Lite users had success with? I'm keen to give this a go

Not TWRP as that is the recovery partition (recovery.img) not the system partition (system. Img). Not sure about root though as i believe that does add stuff in one, or more, of the system sub folders, maybe someone else can confirm, but if you're using superuser then unzipping that should tell you what's being added and where. However, if you think about it, this has always been a bit of an issue with any android. You cannot take a nandroid backup without some kind of custom recovery so how can you ever take a snapshot of the stock rom. Specialised tools can do it as they can dump the entire rom but how can any android be dumped in full straight out of the box without first changing something.?
You could try this:

but it never really worked properly for me.

From custom to stock

I've unlocked my phone, installed twrp recovery and lineage os 14 latest build.
Now I'm selling my phone and I want to return to stock mode, so latest global stable and stock recovery.
Is it possible? And how can I do?
Inviato dal mio MI MIX utilizzando Tapatalk
Of course you can. Download the fastboot ROM (Stock Global or Chinese), decompress it into your C: drive, download and run the MiFlash tool, select the path where you have placed the decompressed stock ROM, select the ''Clean All' option from the MiFlash tool and press 'Flash'. You should be back to complete stock and ready to sell off your phone.

But be sure to uncheck relock bootloader.
Hey guy's,
I'm late joining the Mi Mix party - I've been using android since the original Samsung Galaxy S including Galaxy Notes and Nexus devices.
Since those early days when everything had to be done without toolkits I've also got myself employed and have just not had the time I once had due to no longer living alone.
Because this phone has been around a while I've noticed that a lot of the guides are a bit confusing/conflicting so just wanted to ask a few questions..
I am on MIUI Global 9.2 Stable (after I got the phone I did an OTA update.)
Here's what I want to do ....
Unlock the bootloader
Root
Install TWRP
and finally after that pick out and install a Rom.
So firstly do I have to install drivers before doing anything else. And on one guide it had 2 sets of drivers, Qualcomm & USB ?
Then do I just download adb & fastboot tool
and then the Mi Flash Tool and that's it ?
Source:
https://www.getdroidtips.com/unlock-bootloader-mi-mix/
or is there a newer more detailed guide with newer files ?
Just to add that I was going to try and unlock the bootloader via the official route but got a little confused when setting up the Mi/MIUI accounts before doing some more research and realizing there's an unofficial way.
The last time I used adb/fastboot it was a huge package compared to the now couple of files.
Also is there anything I need to do when first installing TWRP regarding choosing the partition options.
Thanks for reading and any response - Ps I'm in UK and have 2 Sims in phone and do I need to worry about the recovery phone number/details.
Thanks in advance.

Then do I just download adb & fastboot tool
and then the Mi Flash Tool and that's it ?

or is there a newer more detailed guide with newer files ?
Just to add that I was going to try and unlock the bootloader via the official route but got a little confused when setting up the Mi/MIUI accounts before doing some more research and realizing there's an unofficial way.
The last time I used adb/fastboot it was a huge package compared to the now couple of files.
Also is there anything I need to do when first installing TWRP regarding choosing the partition options.
Thanks for reading and any response - Ps I'm in UK and have 2 Sims in phone and do I need to worry about the recovery phone number/details.
Thanks in advance.

Go the official route to unlock, miflash comes with the drivers, don't think there are any updates from the ones in the guide, not sure what you mean with the Sims, are contacts saved to Google if so nothing to worry about. You will only need miflash to get back to stock unless you got vendor ROM which doesn't seem to be the case.
