Sorry, I realize this is probably a dumb question but I've been really busy in the past couple years and have been out of the root game for awhile. A lot has changed since my OG Droid days.
You have a DEV EDITION. unlock the BOOTLOADER and root it.

After you unlock follow the steps to install TWRP. When you reboot you'll be rooted.
Thanks everyone! Like I said before sorry for the stupid question I finally have the time to get back into the rooting stuff. Unlocked the bootloader via Moto's site and it bricked my phone lol. Pretty ironic the one time I brick a device is going the OEM's route to unlock. So learned a lot unbricking it. All rooted now and back to stock recovery. Thanks for the replies and resources. ☺

The link supplied by @Restola is a very complete and newbie friendly set of instructions, including directing you to Moto's web site to obtain the unique unlock code needed for your phone. The included mfastboot is a little older, as are the Moto Device Drivers, and ADB. Consider viewing -> http://mark.cdmaforums.com/ADB.htm to get them.
And a TIP if you use the instruction's Method B of booting into fastboot/booloader mode, you need to make sure your phone is not plugged into anything until after you see the Fastboot AP screen on your phone.
Additionally, after completing the install of TWRP, it doesn't have you reboot into it (NEEDED!!), and actually rooting (via installing SuperSU or having TWRP itself root you).
You can also use the thread @KJ linked, it has two has 2 sections you need to expand... I see Chainfire uploaded the nexus 6 flashable image today to root the nexus. Found it here. http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/
With that being said this is my first nexus device I have always been on the note series. Could someone give me step by step instuctions on how too root the nexus 6 and how to unroot it? Bring it back to 1000% stock? THANKS!
Well since you already found autoroot. All you really need to do is download the zip and execute the files corresponding to your Operating System. Everything is included in there, it will simply unlock your bootloader and then root your phone.
100% Stock... https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images -- download shamu and do the same thing there.
Unroot.. just remove SuperSU and its binaries.

Thats the joy of devices with a unlockable bootloader. The process is fairly simple and easy to do Toolkits aren't present at this time, but its very easy to do without toolkits that I encourage people to manually root their N6 as it isn't a long process when compared to other phones such as Samsung.

Just so I make sure I am on par here. Bricking devices are never fun.. What do I need to do step by step to root my nexus 6 using the file from Chainfire I downloaded?
Next what do I need to do step by step to relock my bootloader and go back to 100% stock now that I know where to get the stock image?

You don't need a step-by-step.. if you're using Windows, double click the file that says windows then a window will pop up and do all the work for you.
If you want to relock your bootloader, simply just type fastboot oem lock. Please google search this stuff, even though its not Nexus 6 specific. The Nexus 5 or 4 or Galaxy Nexus threads will show you how to relock your bootloader as they're the same in terms of bootloader unlocking/locking.
Stock image.... I already linked you that.
Android fastboot etc are already included in the Auto Root zip.
Please don't overthink this, its fairly easy to do

It could be possible you can execute the commands in the folder that consist of fastboot.exe. I wouldn't see why not assuming you have the drivers and whatnot installed.
There honestly is no point in relocking the bootloader though, just leave it unlocked. Having the bootloader locked causes too many problems if you decide to root again. Only point in relocking the bootloader is for warranty purposes.

I don't endorse using toolkits. Its already easy to do without one plus by using a toolkit you don't learn the skills of using adb/fastboot which is very important. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-nexus/general/dangers-tool-kits-one-click-root-t1469909 for full details.

I started with a toolkit. Worked fine. Then my natural curiosity led me to learn adb/fast boot, which I prefer. For some, however, a good tool kit is a godsend. You probably still use ms Dos, python scripts, etc. for some things as do I. For a beginner, though, it can help to show them the awesomeness of Android with the freedom of an unlocked bootloader. Then the serious ones will likely stick around and gravitate to finding out how it all works.

Step 2: Power off your Nexus 6, and boot the device into bootloader mode. To do so, hold down the Volume Down button and the Power button.
Step 3: Once you see the “Restart bootloader” message on the phone, let go of the keys and tap “Restart bootloader” to enter bootloader mode.
Step 4: Plug in the Nexus 6 to the PC or Mac and navigate to the location of the extracted contents.
Step 5: Now we need to run the automated root script.

Your steps are correct. However, when you Power on the phone with volume down + power there is no need to go to restart bootloader because you'll already be in bootloader mode.
For me, I did those same steps as you but I also had to install the USB drivers while in fastboot because auto root wasn't detecting my phone in bootloader mode.

You're good, you can root your phone and all that jazz if you wish to do so.
Do we know if unlocking root etc trips any sort of counter? I know moto had counters in the past, but I'm coming from verizon's screw you samsung knox bull****, so you understand why I ask.

Correct, the N5 has one but it can be reset, with the 6, it also has a counter but we don't know yet if it can be reset.

i want to root to enable the multi user option by updating the build.prop file, i've been able to connect with ADB but the device isn't visible in windows or mac (tried both) when you reboot into boot loader, in fact it doesn't appear to boot into boot loader it just seems to power off (when using ADB reboot command or choosing boot loader from the recovery menu) so i wonder if its locked out somehow??

I too just purchased a B1-850 tablet, but I've figured out how to root it. Really quite simple. Just use Kingroot:
1.) Navigate to https://kingroot.net/ from your tablet
2.) Download the APK for android
3.) Install said APK (this requires you to have allowed installation from unkown sources in the "Security" panel of the settings menu)
4.) Load up the app and follow its instructions
5.) Reboot and try it out
For good measure, I would also unlock the "Developer Options" panel and allow USB debugging (adb access) and such; I did this before proceeding. You'll have to search for instructions on that yourself, its well documented.
This all worked for me this morning! Really looking forward to unlocking the potential of this cheapy tablet.
Kingroot worked first try, just swap their super user program with supersu. I am having trouble installing the xposed framework though if anyone has any tips.
I was able to root, now I need to install a custom recovery. CWM says this model is not in the supported list. Has anyone been able to install a recovery? I need NANDROID backup functionality.
I made a thread walking you through how to do it on this tablet in the guides area but just use flash fire for recovery and xposed install
Did the B1-850 hardware updated in anyway? I was able to root it in June 2016, but after a screen repair and factory reset and fresh rom from acer, king root and all others can't work. I'm stuck without any root options. Any idea?

There was recently new firmware released for this tablet (08/24/16, Build #: AV0L0.RV09RC04.WW.GEN1), and a handful of updates (08/25/16, 08/26/16) from Acer. I have this same tablet, and I'm unable to root after flashing to the firmware released on the 24th, and latest firmware (Build #: AV0L0.RV0BRC02.WW.GEN1) as well. Hopefully someone can find a fix, as the few different methods I've attempted simply will not work with the latest firmware from Acer.

I have done this a bunch, sadly still no love. It's annoying me not being able to root a relatively cheaper tablet, as these tend to get rooted first since they get in more people's hands faster. Oh well, just have to have patience.
Thanks, I was having problems, two different rooters failed and I wondered if it was the recent software update! The image version on my B1-850 is the same as you have quoted! Please post if you find a solution, some apps that need deleting are annoying.

This device has made an idiot of me. If I can be of any assistance finding a root exploit for this device let me know. I will gladly write a detailed procedure of the process. I made the mistake of assuming since it was an entry level, inexpensive device, the path to root would be simple. Three months later none of the common "one-click" programs has found an exploit. I have a copy of stock rom for recovery so testing is not a problem for me. It's a matter of pride at this point. So much so I found one on sale for $60 and bought it just for this purpose. I have followed every link I can find associated with this device to a dead end. Any help will be appreciated.

Same here, still no root for me. Usually these cheapo tablets are not as locked down.

I have given up getting assistance from xda on this device. Its as political here as anywhere else. I don't drive a Samsung so nobody wants to help with root. I've heard every excuse from locked bootloader (unlockable in dev options) to what one dev actually told me,"There's little interest in spending energy on an inexpensive device." I understand, but why misrepresent the site by implying all android devices are treated the same? Hell on the Iconia One 8 thread, it says that the B1-850 does not have a MTK SoC, but instead has an Intel Atom chip. Then they send you to another thread where, of course, there is no B1-850 listed! That's because it uses a MTK8163 SoC. In both tablets.

I've just bought a Fire Tablet on Amazon day with the intention of rooting it and installing CM, but I am a newbie and there's so much information on here it's kind of overwhelming, and most of it has a lot of "if this, then that, or if you want to use that, do this" type guides, which for someones who doesn't really know what all the different methods and options are is really confusing!
So can someone please tell me the step by step process for doing it?
From what I've read I think I have to downgrade to 5.1.2 of the OS as I can't root on 5.1.4? Is that correct?
So do I have to root before I do that? Or do I downgrade first and then root, and then install the CM?
If someone can list each of the steps I need to take to get it from a fresh new 5th Gen Fire 7 to having all the Amazon rubbish off and having it running CM, then I can look for the guides for each step!

I did the same thing, bought the tablet on prime day and was successfully able to root it and put the AOSP nexus rom
First things first make sure you have the 7-inch tablet for the following steps because apparently it only works with that specific model. Since this is my first post I can't post any links so sorry about that however, I have added the video title so that you can just google it and find the video.
Anything above fire os 5.1.2 ( that is 5.1.4, 5.1.3, 5.1.2.1) has to be downgraded to 5.1.2.
Also downgrading from 5.1.4 to 5.1.1 is going to give you a hard brick. I don't know how you didn't know that but it was clearly stated in the xda guide I was following
Basically you have to follow rootjunkys video and instead of using the file he uses in the video use the fire OS 5.1.2 file which is also available on his website.
Imortant: Do a factory reset before downgrading. I did not do that and the rooting process did not work.

After you have fire OS 5.1.2 follow the rooting process shown in another rootjunky video

Note: He shows how to do the whole process while using mac but it can be done on windows awell and the windows files are already present. Instead of using the .sh file and opening the terminal double click the .bat file and follow along.
You can use his SuperTool to put the play store app and fire flash app.
Note: For some reason fire flash was not working properly for me by using the SuperTool, so I just installed it from the google play store.
Now you should have rooted fire OS 5.1.2 along with superSU. Now with the fire flash app and you can download any rom that you want to flash. Follow the steps in the video for instructions

It's not a matter of someone getting off their keister and whipping up a "tool" (presumably you are talking about root) that works with FireOS 5.1.4 or whatever the latest version is. Like many manufactures Amazon actively discourages rooting devices and attempt to block known exploits. It's a cat and mouse game. We may see a "tool" soon, much further down the road or never. Be happy you can root the device at all and be thankful for the individuals who unselfishly share their time and talents with the community.

The problem was that the guide I was referred to for getting CM onto it already assumed it had been rooted, and when I started googling and looking on the different guides on rootjunky there were so many coming from different angles but nothing giving the clear start to end steps for what I wanted to do, for a newbie it was very confusing. Plus in the guide I was following (a rootjunky one) he had an older version of the OS and the toolkit had different files/folders to what are in it now, so I guess at that time there was no mentioned of 5.1.4 and not being able to go back.
After thinking I needed to downgrade the OS I found the one for unbrinking and downgrading and did that fine to 5.1.2, but then when I tried the superkit it still said it was too new, so I tried to downgrade further, which is when I bricked it.
There was no mention of it on the video..... other than a bloody great overlay in the corner, which must have been added later on, and probably because I was tearing my hair out and getting confused I didn't spot it. That's my excuse anyway!

1 - do a factory reset on the device (from the device settings, or do I need to do it in the bootloader settings?)
2 -downgrade to 5.1.2 (I should be able to do this now)
3 - root the device (and install supersu?)
4 - install CM
Then it should have full CM and none of the Amazon OS left.
I'm not missing any steps there am I?

The problem was that the guide I was referred to for getting CM onto it already assumed it had been rooted, and when I started googling and looking on the different guides on rootjunky there were so many coming from different angles but nothing giving the clear start to end steps for what I wanted to do, for a newbie it was very confusing. Plus in the guide I was following (a rootjunky one) he had an older version of the OS and the toolkit had different files/folders to what are in it now, so I guess at that time there was no mentioned of 5.1.4 and not being able to go back.

- no need for a factory reset at any point; offers no benefit for what you are trying to accomplish.
- installation of SuperSU (replacing Kinguser and related Kingroot cruft) after rooting is highly recommended prior to using FlashFire or any other tool that messes with the system partition. The SuperTool can facilitate this otherwise ugly task.
- if you are struggling with RootJunky videos you should give serious consideration to the challenges of installing a custom rom. It doesn't get any easier going forward.

I managed to root my Nvidia Shield TV fine so I should be able to do it, I just needed to be clear of the full process from start to finish, and as I wasn't starting from the beginning of the process that made it more confusing. The rootjunky videos are great, but when someone is saying you can use this or that or do this or that it's putting choices and variables in to the mix so it's not a straighforward step by step, and when the kits and the webpages shown on the videos have changed since they were made, for someone trying to piece the info together it takes a bit more time.
Maybe I should point out that I didn't look on here initially when I started trying to do it, I basically saw the fire on offer mentioned on a forum I use and someone said yeah, it's easy to root and get CM on if, just user this video, with the link to a rootjunky YouTube video which didn't mention the prerequisite of already having downgraded the OS (why would it) so in hindsight I didn't start at the right place or have the best information.
After reading through some stuff on here (and that's over whelming for a first timer as there is so much stuff on here for many, many devices and platforms - even just finding the Amazon fire sub forum on an iPad wasn't easy!) I'm getting a better idea for attempt two.
I'll get there, and at least I know how to not brick it now! :good:

I've used rootjunkys supertool to root the device with Kingmaker, which then installed SuperSU, and I finally uninstalled Kingmaker/Purity.
So I now have a rooted Fire, which is great. I have also installed the Google Play store, disabled OTA updates and removed ads from the lock screen. But I don't want the Amazon OS on it (pretty fugly isn't it!), so the next step, flashing it with CM.
What guide would be best for a Fire with 5.1.2 on it? When I look at the Rootjunkys guide for installing CM on the Fire (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dwguHoxTvo&feature=youtu.be) the super tool kit does differ, and the one I downloaded from his link only has the tool for doing it for OS 5.0.1, so it won't let me boot into TWRP recovery. - Kingroot/Purify, not Kingmaker/Purity
- I can't think of a better suite of guides than the videos produced by RootJunky
- use FlashFire 0.51 to install (flash) the rom of your choice
- OP for Nexus rom has video link and and basic FlashFire guidance
- get over the minor variations in the language/tools used to support this device between the making of videos and the latest release.

1. Get the CM rom and put it in the tablet from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/orig-development/rom-cm-12-1-2015-11-15-t3249416
2. Install FlashFire 0.51 from play store or use the SuperTool
3. Follow the video instructions and instead of the nexus rom use the CM rom you downloaded:

Reinstall FlashFire 0.51 (here) on CM 12.1 then use it to flash the GAapps package. Agree with your selection: ARM/5.1/nano.

Is it possible to have the SD card to be used as combined storage? For example, my Shield TV lets me 'add' the SD card to the main storage so it sees it all as one instead of a second removable device, so can install apps on it, etc. If this possible with Cyanogenmod? (Not sure what you'd call that feature to search for it!) Thankfully the main reason I bought it was to help manage my music with MediaMonkey so I won't be installing lots on it, but if it is possible it would be useful.
Second, with regard to OS updates on CM, are they automated or do they need to be done manually (and, if so, with care?)

Short answer: 'yes'. There are various approaches to utilizing SD cards for app installation/storage each with pros, cons and compromises. I highly recommend using a tool that leverages 'symbolic links' which is by far the most reliable method. An example is Link2SD which you can find in the Play Store.
All custom roms for this device are updated manually via FlaahFire or TWRP (if available). Instructions can usually be found in the OP.

did you open up the file manager and install the flashfire.apk? I am on the same problem you had on your post #11, but my problem I ran into now is flash fire says "root access could not be acquired" otherwise this would be a easy to do.
I think I might have to reinstall everything and start over. >_<
Yes, I copied it over via USB and installed it from the file manager. Do you have root enabled in the developer settings, I enabled it for adb and apps.

Great post guys!! I am getting ready to root my fire OS 5.1.4 and this helps me greatly! Been searching for a downgrade guide and this is it! Have one question is Cm only recovery program or is there a TWRP version for this ? I would think that lastest TWRP would work since its all android but have to ask .I like TWRP myself cause i have it on rooted tablets

You can not boot/install/use twrp on this device unless running FireOS 5.0.1 or lower. Nor can you rollback to any version below 5.1.2 without bricking the device. FlashFire is the tool of choice for installing roms and performing other maintenance tasks that are typically done in a custom recovery environment.
Hey so do you think the blu advance 5.0 hd will be compatible with the work being done on the R1 hd? I would really like to jump on this hype train with my similar but slightly less powerful phone.
I am hoping that I will be able to install a custom rom like R1 users. I also want to root my phone to disable google services in the meantime.

That phone is based on the 6580 SoC, the R1 uses a 6735. There is a site that lists some roms for blu products that may help, I don't know how reliable they are, I have never used them, but if you want to check it out...

If your wanting to root it, I'm hearing Kingroot is working, never used it though, so I can't say if it works or if it's safe??

Did you use the desktop versions? Those have higher success rates. I tried rooting an HTC that way and it worked flawlessly even when the apk didn't.

I'm in the same boat. I've got 20 of these BLU Advance 5.0 HD devices and I need to root them to gain access to the VirtualSensor app to emulate a gyroscope. I've tried Kingo and Mobogenie (barf-boo-hisssss). I'm wondering if kingo isn't working on these since they have Marshmallow. I read somewhere they originally shipped with Lollipop.

consider yourself blessed my friend, i'd like to root mine just to get marshmallow.... i have lollipop and checked for updates and says i'm up to date, i can only install 1 app at a time because there is no room on the internal storage, i have to move every app to sd card and then clean cache for each and every app i want.. never recommending blu to anyone

I was able to root mine successfully the long way.... had to obtain a dump of the boot.img / recovery.img using software that I'm not sure of the policy of discussion on here at XDA - compile TWRP - unlock bootloader - fastboot boot the compiled recovery - flash SuperSU to get patched boot.img (kitchen was being dumb and systemless root didn't want to work) - Flash SuperSU in system mode - Convert SuperSU.apk to system app so it doesn't get removed every reboot. I can post my compiled TWRP when I'm back at my office or grab it from my repository that I'm trying to establish - https://bluroms.info . Sorry for the design mess / lack of much there at moment haven't had much free time lately in process of cleaning up the device kernel sources to build from source... its sort of ... messy in there...... can post on github if anyone wants in

I've been trying to root a Blu Advance 5.0 HD for a while now and stumbled on this post. I visited your site but am not sure what a 'Scatter File' is, or in what order I need to do things in order to get root.
If you could provide a little more detailed info that would be very much appreciated.

I found a option in developer settings that is "Enable OEM unlocking" and it makes it so you can unlock the bootloader from fastboot, if you do adb reboot-bootloader and then fastboot unlock it should undo the bootloader for you

Like the others said, I would really appreciate if you could give an explanation or tutorial on how to use these files that you uploaded to root the phone. I'm willing to donate some money if required. I only know basic technical stuff haha.

I too am trying to root this device, and am unclear on a few of the steps here. I actually found your site with the recovery and boot images independently, really appreciated! I am at the point where I just need to patch the boot image, though I am not sure how to do this. If you could help me out with this step I might be able to put together some sort of list of steps to get through the whole process if you don't have the time.
