I am finally planning to unlock my Verizon Moto X 2014. I t is stuck on Android 5.1 and I want Marshmellow, or even Nouget if possible. But I am looking for a ROM which retains the "active display" feature of this device. Like how it shows notifications when you reach for it. Do any third-party roms have this? Thanks

They all support Ambient Display, which shows notifications when the screen is off/black, or when you wave over it, or pick up the phone.

That's awesome! but how could they all support it? Isn't that unique feature part of the ROM?

I think when any ROM is built with a device's kernel source code/drivers, it will support whatever hardware features the device has.
Actually no custom rom have ACTIVE DISPLAY support. Only Ambient Display which is a built in function of android 6.0+ (or 5.0, not sure now), but not nearly good as the Motorola Active Display.

So this may sound like a silly question, but I don't understand why anyone would buy a Moto X is they are going to flash a ROM that isn't blur based. Don't you lose all the functionality that makes Moto X great? Like the performance benifits of the Motorola X8, the active display, the touchless controlls... even the performance on the Moto X is well above what the tech specs would lead you to believe.
I used to be a flashaholic with previous phones but the only flash I did on the Moto X was a pre rooted stock based rom and I haven't felt the need to go AOSP. I broke my screen and Moto gave me a new one that I just got today ... contemplating what to do with my flashing situation to my new one since I have a fresh start.

I agree I tried PAC ROM and it lasted about an hour and I went back to stock. I missed active notifications and touchless control. I mean the ROM was great very smooth just missed what made my maxx a maxx. However there are people that may not use active notification and touchless control so a ROM is fine for them. I will never put another ROM on my phone I love it stock with xposed and gravity box. To me its the best of both worlds. And gravity box is updated every week or two with new features so it never gets stale. To each their own that is what i love about android there is something for everyone unlike apple which is take what we give you.

Haha yah I know what you mean. Thanks for the reply! I was wondering if I was missing something like the features could be installed into CM or something but I guess I'm staying Blur On previous moto phones I always flashed CM or something similar I hated blur ... but the Google owned Moto X Blur is really AOSP with some nice features on top taking advantage of the X8.
EDIT: Also I was reading about Gravitybox as you replied to this I do think I'm gonna install that.
Gravity box will give you all or most the features of the custom roms and let you keep the Moto x features.

Because some people believe that "pure" AOSP (even though custom roms aren't pure AOSP) is the be-all-end-all of Android.
Yea, i used to be a flasholic too whit my previous nexus 4, but I don't know why I just feel great whit the stock ROM of the moto X.
Active display its really great and extremely useful, maybe I will never want to have led notifications again. I want active nots forever In every future phone from now.
By the way, I think we don't need to flash Roms because we have almost native android, and if we use gravity box the result its better that cm or aosp.
THE ONLY TWO THINGS that I really miss are: Halo (PA) and MIUI for the weekends.

I just unlocked my Verizon Moto X this week thanks to the Chinese site, and noticed after doing so that the only Rom I can find that is blur based is Eclipse, which at the moment doesn't support a lot of xposed add ons. I also don't see any kernels for blur. Am I blind or missing something? I have no regrets about unlocking the bootloader as I was now able to upgrade to 4.4.2 without issue, but I thought there would be a little more choices in this regard.
My reason for asking is because all the non blur roms, as far as I can tell, do not support touchless controls, assit or native motorola active display. Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I use these features a lot (touchless controls by far the most of the 3) and wanted to be able to continue using those on a custom rom, as well as tinker with custom kernels.
Welcome to Moto x. Not a huge development circle.
I think eclipse and kangakat are the only 2 stock based roms.
Faux kernel is for stock based only. And its the only custom kernel.
That's it....if you want to keep the Moto features.
Aosp roms don't have the Moto features.
Moto isn't a flashaholics phone...not at all.

That's what I figured, although for the price the bootloader unlock was worth to be able to get 4.4.2 with everything accesible as well as future proof updates.
Eclipse room is quite nice. I have not yet seen an xposed module that is incompatible. You do have to get x control and it replaces some gravitybox features, but both still work.

Hello Moto X part of XDA.
While I have a low post count, I'm a big lurker in XDA and not completely new to all this... well. I am new to this phone.
I just received my moto X second hand, and I have a couple questions. I have read The complete Moto X guide and Im still not clear in a couple things
My device is already bootloader unlocked, but not rooted yet. I have android 4.4.3, I thought of rooting so and flashing a new ROM.
So here are my questions:
1. I can see the list of features of the ROMs, but I do wonder if they keep the original moto X functionalities (the active display, the dedicated cores/activities)? Or is it not mentioned because is common knowledge that by using a custom ROM all those things are gone?
2. Can I somehow edit the navigation bar? I come from samsung phones (yeah... I know) and I got used to having the buttons from left to right as "menu", "home", "back". I know this can be done in some ROMs (i had my moto G that way) but I was wondering if there's any way of doing it in the stock firmware?
3. Does the write protection on the root folders only apply to Bootloader locked devices? Since mine is unlocked, once rooted, I wont have a problem to write the root folders?
Sorry for the noobish questions, but I find surprising how different the moto G is to the moto X regarding the developnment.

1. Some ROMs based on other devices might not have Active Display. Some ROMs do. Check out the Moto X Android Development subforum and read the threads there. I also know that some ROMs use a AOSP active display replacement.
2. Most ROMs allow you to edit the navigation bar but you can also do this with Xposed.
3. Yes.
Let us know if you have any more questions ^_^

Thanks a lot for the quick response. I think I'll stay with the stock firmware for now, while I get used to the phone, but I will root it and try with xposed. The main reasons I want another rom was precisely because of the navbar and tweaking the looks of the thing, but if xposed will allow me that, i see no reason to have a whole new ROM just for that.
Once again, thanks a lot for the quick response!

You should be able to just install a custom recovery and flash SuperSU and then install Xposed. Not as simple for us locked devices

Then you should install CyanogenMod and Gravitybox. You will have the best stock rom with constant nightly updates and the ability to do all the customization (Gravitybox) you need.

Huh? CyanogenMod isn't stock....OR stock-based.
This means no Active Display or Touchless Controls.
Additionally, there are still some known bugs.
And finally, although nightlies will continue, this project is no longer being maintained for the Moto X because dhacker quit the project.
I disagree!

To which part? Anyone who knows anything knows that CM is not stock based! Its based on source code from github as stated in the OP of that ROM here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/orig-development/rom-cyanogenmod-11-moto-x-t2719646
Confirmation that AD and Touchless Controls don't work are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53977187&postcount=248 and here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52543363&postcount=67
Confirmation that dhacker is no longer maintaining the project can be located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54462994&postcount=303 or here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54417178&postcount=294 or here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54417194&postcount=295 (you can also check his TWITTER account)
One still-known bug (listed as recently as July 17th) can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54221828&postcount=276
So I'll ask again: what do you disagree with?!?!
I'm not badmouthing CM or it's (now non-existent) maintainers...I LIKE CyanogenMod. But everything I said would appear to be 100% correct. Especially about CM not being stock based (this is beyond obvious)....

I came from a Droid Maxx. I loved the active display feature and it's the feature that I miss most from my Maxx. Has anyone gotten Moto X's or Droid Turbo's Active Display to work with our N6? I realize there are apps in the Play Store that somewhat do this but they aren't the same.

With the new Motorola X Pro on the horizon which appears to be the clone of the Nexus running stock Moto software I don't expect many devs to bother porting it over. I think they will wait till it releases and port over bits from the framework to make it easier.

If we can get a system dump then it should be possible. I think devs will want to port features over and incorporate them into their ROMs.

If they can't post it I hope they are able to port the entire ROM. It would be so nice to run the stock Moto software as it will probably be Lollipop and include stuff like the Active Display, camera software, Moto Assist and other stuffs

Its possible I suppose but we have to see what we can get our hands on. I suspect that you could run stock moto firmware on the nexus since it's virtually the same device. The ROM will probably need to be modified in some way to do this if its even possible but I feel like the features will be ported before a whole ROM is

It has Ambient Display, which I believe is not exclusive to the N6 but built into Lollipop and only active for compatible hardware. It is also slightly different as Moto Display will continue to flash, or "breathe", the latest notification till you view or dismiss it. It is also heavily optimized specifically for the Moto X hardware and screen technology which makes for great battery life.

That's correct only AMOLED screened devices have the ambient display. My Nexus 9 did not have it in the display settings. Since the Nexus is a Motorola device and the same exact specs as the X Pro we can assume that there will be some porting done. There is a OP discussion Moto X Pro in the Q&A section if you want to check there.

Things like this can be extremely difficult. Often the people who would like them to happen don't have the skills (or the inkling to learn) where as the people with the skills (or inkling to learn) don't care or want to get involved. Its quite rare that skills and would like meet up in a single person.

None works as flawlessly as Moto Display. I have the same problem. I flashed a Nougat ROM and now miss the Moto display feature. I was used to wave hand over my phone on desk to know time or notifications etc. Ambient display is not that effective and usually you need to wave twice thrice for it to work. I learnt from XDA that since its Moto software, its not open-sourced and hence cant be implemented into any custom ROMS. I tried "MotoDisplay Handwave" from playstore but they say its not compatible with my device.
