OK, so tethering your laptop and G1 device isn’t entirely new, but in the past the processes have required root access, or have just been plain messy. However, help is at hand in the form of PDAnet 3G tethering application by June Fabrics (who partners with Palm). This program allows users to use their mobile internet on their G1 as a modem for their laptop.
First and foremost, this little application does not require root access to work. Second, it is free. Currently in BETA stages, the application seems to still run flawlessly according to numerous reports around the internet. In the future, the final version will likely become a ‘paid application’, but if it works well, we think it will prove rather successful.
Of course there is a downside. Using your G1 as a modem for your laptop is probably in direct conflict with your terms and conditions and excessive usage will easily get you a warning and potentially chucked off the mobile interweb. You have been warned.

Thanks, but I already posted about this a few days ago here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=495329
After playing with it for a while, I found that it disconnects frequently, but I guess it's good for people that want to tether and don't have root.
I actually prefer PDANet's USB tethering to the WiFi tether. You don't have to worry or deal with "securing" the connection. It seems faster (although that could be just me) - and frankly, I keep the phone plugged in to my laptop while using wifi tether anyways, since you basically have to have a connection.
The only ****ty part is that you need the PDANet software on your laptop, so you can't just give the connection to friends, etc.
But hey, that's why it's awesome to have both options.
Also, when doing the wifi tether, I always get the "hover your mouse over for 2 seconds to load this image" on all the damn images, it always shows compressed crap... with PDANet it loads fully.
Sweeeeeet!!!... Can say good bye cable company!!!
mine never disconnects, it works great, and for me its ether this or dial up!
Very unreliable
I've found PDANet to be unreliable to the point of uselessness. Constantly drops the connection and runs very slowly when it works. Not a solution at all.
I've purchased a Milestone X720 for my wife, but I found the internal WiFi to work erratically at best.
It seems like it has no problem connecting to Google.com webpage (also it can sync mails and contacts), but when trying to access any other webpages (bbc.co.uk, espn.com, etc.) using the browser, it's always timing out. I know it's not a problem with my WiFi / internal network / router /internet connection, because I can navigate just fine using my HTC Desire or home laptops.
It worked for a while yesterday afternoon, then this morning wasn't able to connect to any website.
The wifi connection is using DHCP, and it shows a correct internal IP address and an excellent signal level. I don't think there's much more things I can tweak in the phone configuration, or isn't there?
Maybe it is a defective phone? Did someone experienced something like this? Should I return it and exchange it for a new one?
I'd appreciate any help.
Alex.
Actually, I've been having problems with my wifi. My wifi will stop working on any webpage at seemingly random intervals (I used to think it was when it went into sleep, but it happens when it's not in sleep now also). Eventually after restarting wifi so many times it'll glitch up and I have to restart the phone.
Providing your phone's stock (as in you haven't rooted it or the like) I'd recommend going to your carrier about the problem.
EDIT: I just checked through the posts on this board and some guy was having another problem with his wifi (different from both of ours though), he suggested getting WifiPowerSavingOff off the market, I'll try it and tell you if it fixes my problem. The only problem is it requires root access, I don't even know if it will fix your problem so you're better off sending the phone back (especially since rooting voids your warrenty). One other thing you could try is just a factory reset, it sounds like a software problem so that might work wonders, you might have to reactivate your phone afterwards though.
Well, thank you for your response.
WiFi was working OK when I came back from work, but is not working now.
The phone is unbranded unlocked, so I'll probably have to talk to the seller.
I tried to see if there was an update from Motorola, but every time I go to the System Updates it says that it is unable to connect to the server, so there's probably no available update for this phone yet.

If it's unlocked OTA updates (updating through the settings) are probably disabled, because installing OTA updates will make you lose root (I'm assuming your phone also is rooted if it was unlocked by the seller). do you know what baseband your using right now? Also, have you installed rom manager or anything that can make nandroid backups?
I might be wrong, but I don't think it's rooted, I think it's just the way it's sold, SIM free and unlocked from factory, not by the seller.
Baseband is 3GSMEPU91A_U_91.07.56I
Well if you wanna double check, just look to see if a superuser permissions app is installed (if you don't find one it's not rooted), I never knew they sold them unlocked (although I'm in the US... so I doubt they do here). All I can say is to try a factory reset then, if that doesn't work then talk to the seller. It sounds like more of a software problem since Google works.
In the end it seems there is some kind of incompatibility between the phone and my WiFi router (a Belkin G). Yesterday I managed to borrow another WiFi router (Netgear) and it works flawlessly when connected to this AP.
I will keep testing during the weekend but I'm pretty sure this was the cause.
Thanks Shiny for your help.
Hi. I picked up a milestone via Ebay two days ago and had similar wi-fi issues. After reading a number of forums I discovered that the problem lay with my router - Siemans Gigaset SE587 (Tiscali). The wireless channel or regulatory domain was set to auto channel 1. I think this confuses the phone so with the help of the router manual I disabled auto and reset it to channel 13.
Wi-fi works flawlessly now and it hasn't affected my other devices. The link below might help.
Hi to all,
in these days, i was wondering if at this state there is a solution to enable via software the Phone Calls and SMS system on the Nexus 7 3G.
I read that Google released the binaries of the 4.2.2, could be useful to work on it and enable this function ?
Sorry for this stupid question, but probably i bought a wrong device, because i supposed to use it as phone and tablet but i discovered that 3g work only for data...
If there is any simple or complicate solution, i will be grateful to anyone.
Im sorry if i posted on the wrong section yesterday (develepers)
Thanks
Well you can try the Google voice/grooveIP combo. Everything will run on your data as it doesn't have regular phone capabilities. But you can set it up to operate exactly like a phone if you are so inclined.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
You also might try Talkatone. I have a non-3g n7, Talkatone works better for me than GrooveIP. Mainly on wifi, but also works fine on my 4g wifi hot spot device. I've dropped my cell service, use both my phone and n7 on wifi only.
Thanks

Thanks for your prompt reply.
Its not a must have, but the main reason was to leave the Phone and use the USIM on the Tablet. My first intent was to have just one subscription to a service. So use the Tablet with a bluetooth earset as phone...
Probably this was not a smart idea, i guess...but the damage is done... (as we say in Italy).
I hope there is a simple solution somewhere, in the mean time i would like to root the device and enable tethering for the future...
Thanks again for your support.
Hello,
My wife and I are both having similar issues with wifi after updating our phones to lillipop. We can connect to the wifi, but apps that require a login or apps that have an optional login are giving errors saying that there is no network (Network issues, no connection, etc.)
Apps that don't work with wifi: Bank apps, Amazon apps, Twitch, Feedly, Speedtest.net, etc.
Apps that do work on wifi: Chrome, YouTube, Drive, Mail apps, etc.
If we turn off the wifi, everything works fine. We both are running stock phones, I've got the HK M8, and she's got an older M7. There are times when a few of the apps will work for a few minutes, but then the issues come back. My wife's phone is also able to connect to our work wifi, when there, some of the apps that don't work at home will consistently work, but not all of them
We've both been told by HTC to do factory resets and to flash the latest stock RUU. The issue remains even after doing this. I don't really want to do the next step of sending in our phones for 7 to 10 days while they "repair" them.
I've tried everything I can think of. I've also factory reset our router and tried every wifi channel and/or security option, hoping that it is an issue with my wifi router.
Does anyone have any idea of what I can try before having to mail HTC my phone?
Thanks for any help.
Sounds exactly like the problem I had. Factory reseting the router took care of it for me though...

Hey there, i have been using an M8 for two months now and the problem that I have, which fits exactly the description of yours, is starting to annoying me. Every time I try to use these apps which need login I have to turn to mobile data to be able to do it. In my case, the issue that us affecting me the most, is with whatsapp, which even though I do can use, I cannot download media on wifi! (Neither pictures nor voice recordings).
It's a real pain in the neck to be doing this all the time, and I have two friends who also have m8s and are suffering from the same problems, so I guess it's something quite generic. Besides all the other android phones in my family work just fine with my router, so the problem is clearly mine. I think that HTC should have done something about it long time ago if it is such a common issue, considering that the price of the device is not cheap...
Anyway, my question is: have you been able to solve the problem? If you have, would you please take a min to share the solution? I would be deeply grateful!
Cheers and thanks in advance
I am using my HTC One M8 HK with lollipop update from the time they released and never had any problem with wifi. I use wifi wherever I go and no problem with anything. Try the following solutions:
1. Check the WiFi Router. Most of the times it is the problem with your router. Check if there is any restrictions or whitelist/blacklist of services.
2. You might be having some apps with whitelist/backlist running in the background. It could be your antivirus app, battery booster or Opera app, etc which does the wifi whitelist.
3. If you are using the sign-in wifi networks, make sure you signed in to the network using the browser window before opening the app.
4. If you are using the VPN (even in the wifi network) you won't be able to open the apps like Bank apps.
5. If the apps you installed are not supported in your country, you won't be able to access.
Try uninstalling and reinstalling the apps. Sometimes, when you upgrade to different OS partitions are not aligned properly. Reinstall and check.
Good luck
Hey guys, so the purpose of this thread is to find out if this is a bug or just how the mobile hotspot works on the P9. Everytime my hotspot is active, I can't use data on my device. No other Android device that I've used has ever has this issue with a mobile hotspot.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
Thanks in advance!
Bump. Anyone experiencing this?
I have the same issue. Discovered it the day after i got it took it backed and swapped it, all was good. Then a few days later the new phone developed this issue. The only way around that I have found is forget the network on the device you are trying to tether to your p9, set up the connection again, return to the home screen on your p9, go and make a cuppa for 5 to 10 minutes then hopefully it will be fully connected and be able to share data. Long winded i know and if anyone else has a fix for this i would love to hear it as I'm bored of not being to use all my extra data I've just upgrade to when I want to.

Thank you for the response! Good to know it's not only me. Hopefully this is not an issue in the Nougat build.
I'd of thought a few other people would have this issue. I searched for ages when I first got the phone but couldn't find anyone who was experiencing it and gave up, then accidentally found your post months later. Is your p9 branded? Mine's a Vodafone.

I do not have the phone, so this goes first. But I am vodafone user. Bear in mind that some data plans do not allow tethering. If before you had android KK, there was no problem, but since LL, your phone is sending information of how the data is used. Then, vodafone blocks your connection.
You can try to use an app that is called Tether Unlock. You need root.

Thanks for your suggestion, unfortunately this was my first thought so got Vodafone to check this and I've haven't got any restrictions. Also I can get it to work after a bit of messing about but it's not ideal

I also do not have any carrier restrictions regarding tethering.
I'm on the Nougat update and unfortunately, the issue is still present.

So, when you tehter it only works for the first time? That's very weird. Have you tried other roms/updates?
This worries me a bit because i want to buy the phone and i tether every day with my car-radio...

Rogers in Canada. No Canadian carriers have tethering/mobile hotspot restrictions, so that's more of a US thing.

Yeah I try to power down after I forget the WiFi setting as a precaution but always have to forget the network then enter the pass key again for it to fully connect to my p9. I'm using the latest firmware from Vodafone but I don't think they have rolled out nougat yet. Not tried any other roms.
The other option is Bluetooth tether, that works fine for me but but the data speed sucks for browsing or streaming, might be an option to connect to your car radio though but I haven't tried it.

Just got my Mate 10 and have discovered exactly the same problem. As soon as I turn on mobile hotspot, then laptop works fine but all data stops on phone. Thsi is not a network issue as I'm on same network as my previous phone and my package specifically allows tethering.
As soon as I turn off hotpot, data works on my phone again.
Any proper fix appreciated...
Bump this thread. I rebranded my P9 3G+32G to EVA-L19C432 and this problem is happening since the rebranding. The phone itself just loses data when wifi hotspot is turned on while the laptop tethered to the phone has no problem navigating. Before with EVA-AL00C00 firmware, this was not the case. Navigation on the phone was not an issue whether or not wifi hotspot was turned on.
Does anyone have a fix for this problem?
Huawei P9 Lite Hotspot
Don' know if this will fix others but turning on hotspot turns off wifi and mobile data.
After some messing, I realised that I had to MANUALLY turn on mobile data to connect to the internet!
Seems OK so far.
Hope this helps.
How did you solve it? I have p20 pro and it is so ennoying not to be able use data on phone while sharing data... I'm on Vodafone UK and there is no restrictions on sharing data.
Hello , I have exactly the same issue with a Huawei Smart P. As soon as I turn on hotspot mode, the data connection stops and vice versa.
I thought it might be a carrier restriction, so I tried the SIM in a portable hotspot. It works, so it' s not that.
Bump. Same issue here. I have a Honor 9, Android 8.0.0. If I activate tethering, be it USB or Hotspot, the connection works only on the devices connected to the phone, while I can't use data on the phone itself. As soon as I turn tethering off, it works on the phone again...
Any help appreciated!

Bump. There must be some expert around here with a clue about what's going on
