Hi all,
Trying to update a friends SGS, and having a bit of a problem. I have sucessfulyl flashed GB 2.3.3 from ROMKitchen to it, however trying to flash any other kernel to it fails... sorta.
After flashing the ROM the recovery is always Samsung default (3e). I have used Odin to try and flash different kernels (Voodoo GB experimental - both the initial release, and the latest version, and several others)
The odd part is this seems to work, until the phone is rebooted - for instance today after flashing Voodoos latest, I reboot into the OS and checked Settings > About Phone, the kernel had updated to "curio (at) carton #Voodoo" but after rebooting this is undone..
Unfortunately the friend I am doing all this for was on tight schedule and had to leave, so there wasn't much time for experimentation, but has anybody seen this happening, and know what to do?
Kernel Flash
Did you make sure that in Odin you put the .tar file into the field PDA and not Phone? I flashed once curios kernel through the Phone-field and the modem did not flash correctly.
Besides that I never had any problems flashing a kernel. You can try the app SGS Kernel flasher from the market if you happen to have problems again.

Yeah, It's definitely in PDA. The odd thing about this all is I did the very same process on my phone, and it worked. On his no matter what I do his recovery will always end up at stock - even the kernel in the romkitchen package doesn't seem to be taking effect.
Then update recovery as always via Clockwork post .

So i've got my Note roooted now and just updated from KL3 to a newer stock firmware LC2.
While updating the firmware using CWM, and since wanted to keep root, i think it mentioned something about the kernel was not being updated.
And now after updating, I'm sure it normal but, I noticed that my kernal remained the same KL3, but my build number and my baseband version updated to the LC2.
Question:
is there any perfomance difference if I had not had a rooted phone and went with the kernel that originally came with CL2 as compared to using my old (i guess you call it) rooted kernel from KL3 along with this new CL2 firmware?
Is there a difference between the 2 kernels?
Thanks
Ofcourse Yes... many bugs ll be fixed in the new kernel.
Kernels usually dont get that much updation compare to PDA. And almost newer kernel are identical.
Though you have much version defference KL3 to CL2, better you can update to CF root kernel CL1(CL2 not available, N as such nothing difference whether go with CL1/CL2)
Update it either way, as mentioned below
Download This
1. If you have Mobile Odin
Just extract above file N copy zImage file on your SD card, Open Mobile Odin, Select Kernel Tab, point to zImage file on SD card, you have put.
N Flash
Done, You will have latest Kernel + CWM
2. Extract Above file
-Run Already Rooted
-Enable Unknown sources N USB debugging on device
-Coneect device to PC
-Press any key to Run script
In few seconds, your devices gets rebooted N you will have latest kernel + CWM on successfull process.

You can flash any kernel you wish from Recovery without triggering the binary counter. That goes for custom kernels as well, not just CF--Root ones.
There is any way to flash my GT-N7000 using img file but with DEKTOP odin ?
Thanks!

No way. Can only flash .tar or .tar.md5 using desktop / PC Odin.
Thanks!
Can you help me about one more little thing?
I have rooted my Galaxy Note and downloaded the v08 file from the: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1516515
Inside the .tar file i found this files: cache.img; data.img; factoryfs.img; hidden.img and zImage.
What file i have to open in Mobile Odin to install the ICS in my Galaxy Note?
I guess it's:
Kernel: zImage
System: factoryfs.img
Data: data.img
Cache: cache.img
Hidden: hidden.img
Is that correct? Sorry about the silly question, but it's better sound like a noob to get a mobile bricked! lol
Thanks!
If you want to install stock ICS, you dont need to select it manually
Just in Mobile odin, select open file and point to tar file. It will popup and fill file autometically to according tab then just flash.
You can do it with PC Odin too.
Just select PDA tab and point to .tar file and flash.

So, i follow the steps to install the "imilka's AOSP ICS v08 [IMM76D/4.0.4]".
1. Downloading the latest version of "imilka's AOSP ICS v08 [IMM76D/4.0.4]" (v08);
2. Flash my Galaxy Note with Android 2.3.6 using Odin for WIndows;
3. Wipe Cache / Factory Reset;
4. Flash my Galaxy Note with Android 4.0.4 using Odin for WIndows;
5. Root my device and install the Mobile Odin Pro;
6. Flash my Galaxy Note with the latest (v08) "imilka's AOSP ICS v08 [IMM76D/4.0.4]" using Mobile Odin Pro;
But, when my Galaxy Note reboot, his show the status bar with the rest of screen black, some seconds after the android displays the following error: "unfortunately twlauncher has stopped" and reboot again.
Then, the Galaxy Note loads the Android 4.0.3 with TouchWiz just like the stock samsung version, with s-note, s-etcetera.. lol
Any sugestions?
Thanks!

You can flash the GB again, and why the need to flash 4.0.4 again?
So far as i heard it is a risky kernel.
Doesnt the custom rom zip you specified can be installed from cwm on gb kernel?

Because i can't run CWM with 2.3.6 (for root it), i always got an error. And i don't found any source to download the compatible CWM
Usually AOSP based ROM is installed via CWM recovery, i.e. flash rom, flash gapps, done. How did you do it with Mobile Odin?

5. Select in Mobile Odin the following options:
Kernel -> file: zImage
System -> file: factoryfs.img
Data -> file: data.img
Cache -> file: cache.img
Hidden -> file: hidden.img
Modem -> none
Params -> none
Then, flash!
There are 2 parts of installation:
1. Install the base, which is official ICS -> odin
Root it, get a working CWM recovery with disabled brickbug,
2. Flash the aospgnxx.zip -> CWM

With Official ICS you mean "the" Samsung official ICS? Can be the 4.0.4 (Open Germany) recently released?
"Root it, get a working CWM recovery with disabled brickbug"
Ok about root. But CWM with "disabled brickbug"? How can i get it?
And where do i found the aospgnxx.zip to download?
Thanks!
The .tar file that you downloaded is the base file, i.e. ICS. The aospgnxx.zip you can download from http://download.imilka.eu if the file is still available. The CWM with brickbug disabled, you can try speedmod or gl_notecore or goku or franco.

updated on 4.2.1 SuperNexus (hydra kernel) (worked!)
flashed Philz Kernel and 4.1.1 TW dump (worked!)
flashed Philz XXLSZ Kernel and the original OTA update 4.1.2 XXLSZ trough odin (worked!)
flashed CarbonRom 4.2.2 XXLSZ (worked!)
wanted to flash the stock 4.1.2 - didn't work - (soft brick)
friend suggested to first flash a safe kernel again, i think it worked because of the yellow triangle? but i still cant boot in cwm
i still have acces to the download mode but it doesnt boot neither in recovery nor normal boot (boot loop)need instructions please fast!

Hi,
Yes, but you probably will get the yellow triangle, you can remove it later tho with "triangle away".
... anyway, you can have the latest stock tw rom versions from Thaidai Pristine's thread or Eybee's stock reloaded via CWM without having to return to those versions you mentioned on Odin... just a suggestion. Hope this helps.
Curently I'm using the LOS 17 rom, and I wonder if anyone can show me the way to install the one UI 2.0? thanks

There are two ways.
1. Install an official Samsung rom
Note that in the official rom you can't hide your Knox status, so you won't ever be able to use e.g. Samsung Health
- Download the stock firmware for your country from Sammobile
- Install Odin (there are official download links here on XDA, just search for it)
- Unzip the downloaded rom
- Open Odin, connect your device in download mode and place the unzipped files in the right slots (use CSC instead of HOME_CSC in the CSC slot to reset your phone, it's safer)
- Flash
2. Install a custom rom based on stock
- Clean flash a rom like the one of AlexisXDA in TWRP, you probably know how it works
