Sprint is making me crazy - can I do this? - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Sprint has its name popping up int the notification area at the top and when I pull down the notification panel. I'm sick of seeing there name. advertise to someone who doesn't own a phone through you! I've turned off or blocked everything I can find with Sprint on it and it still shows up.
1. does anyone know how to make it go away? using BK disabler.
2. I'm with Sprint and bought the Sprint variant. is it possible to overwrite the system os with an unlocked version? I'll give up whatever I have to if it gets their name off my screen.
so fu%$ing intrusive. it's all you see everywhere, no matter what. I KNOW who my carrier is. why do they shove it in your face when not needed.

After using BK disable and disabling most all Sprint apps and services I no longer have Sprint on my screen.

thanks for replying. I did that and still have it. do you by any chance have a screenshot of what you disabled in BK to accomplish this. bad enough having sprint at the top, but now when I have the notification panel open sprint is at the bottom too. ready to get a box cutter and go at my screen.

I'm assuming your device is the Sprint version? I'm Unlocked on Verizon and it's only on the bottom of the Notification pulldown when completely down, no where in the Notification area.

yeah. box cutter or claw my eyes out. cannot wait for root. obscene what they do to this beautiful device.

I believe root or flashing a custom ROM is the onlybway to remove that. Since those aren't options right now, I believe you can flash the unlocked firmware. You might loose some carrier specific features (not sure if Sprint has volt, wifi calling, etc). You can flash those features for the unlocked firmware but I'm not sure if that will bring you back to what you don't want now.

See where it is on the notification bar on your lock screen?
It stays on that spot when pulled down partially or fully depending on your CSC setup.
I don't know which files exactly, but I've had AT&T there on lockscreen and full pull down, and I've also had it on Lockscreen only.
I wasn't particularly paying attention to this, but this is what I remember while playing around with various stock and custom roms and CSC setups for my N950N (Korean) on AT&T.
I'm sure it's possible to remove it entirely, just gotta find the right file(s).
3rd party branding like this drives me nuts. Samsung is fine, but not other crap like carrier logo + FCC crap at the bottom on the back of the phone.
I REALLY want to scrape it off, but I don't want to remove the back to do this as it's on the inside.
I hate seeing dealership logos on vehicles. They didn't do anything to deserve that status, and alot of them around southern Missouri are STUPID AS HELL. Many are larger than my license plate...

Carrier logos/badges in the notification pull down are indicating whose network the device is connected to usually. Though I don't have them on my T-Mobile Note8 unless I'm roaming on AT&T.

[Q] Where are my Sprint apps?

Ok, I know that this is kind of weird "problem" to post about here, but my One doesn't have any of the Sprint bloat/apps. I suspect it might be because my Network Operator Name in the About portion of Settings is "HTC" instead of "Sprint". I'm running viperboy's stock odexed 1.29.651.10. My wife, who also has a Sprint One, is running 100% stock and has all of the Sprint crap and her Network Operator is Sprint. So is this because I'm running a rooted "stock" ROM? Or is there something else going on? In any event, I kind of wanted to check out the Scout navigation app and it apparently isn't on my phone and certainly doesn't show up in the Play Store when I search for it or under the Sprint category. How can I get my phone to believe that it is a Sprint phone? I'll worry about freezing or ripping out bloatware I don't want later, I just want the choice!
Where did you get the phone? It doesn't sound like it's a retail device.

I got it at Sam's Club from the retail phone guy. I should add that everything else seems to work fine: Play Store access including paid apps, make and receive phone calls, 3g and LTE, wifi, GPS, etc.

A lot of the "stock" rooted roms still remove bloatware apps. Check the rom's thread on here and see if they were removed. Sometimes the bloat apps are still there, but moved to a different folder. That way, you can add what you want.
There was a thread on this a while back. I believe the general assumption is you got an HTC demo unit. Its htc branded as opposed to sprint branded. No issues save for missing sprint apps. If you take it back, theyll exchange it for the simple fact its branded htc. Just ruu first. No need to exchange, though.

I kind of wondered about that. I don't think it's really worth taking it back just for some carrier apps I'll probably end up pulling out anyway. I wonder why there seem to be so many demo units out there being sold as retail? Maybe the initial supply problems?
I dont know man. Maybe they got shipped out in retail boxes beforehand and some sprint stores never put them out on display and got them mixed up? Thats a mofo of a coincidence if so though

Further research
I've poked around a little more in my system files to see if there is any reference to Sprint and found a few apks in /system/app: SprintDMS.apk, Sprint_Worldwide.apk, SprintInstaller.apk, and SprintZone.apk. If I try to install them using ES File Explorer, the installer runs and warns me that they are system apps and tells me about permissions, then fails with the message "App not installed." (Well duh, that's why I tapped on the apk....) So at least some of the Sprint stuff is on my phone, but it is dormant somehow. Is it possible that I just didn't get activated quite right after rooting? I sort of remember something called Hands-Free Activation running for several minutes on the first boot after rooting and cancelling it because it did not seem like it was going to complete. Maybe that has something to do with it?
You (or someone) changed something in your dialer settings. There is an option to turn off sprint branding in there. When you were on stock did you have any sprint animations when the phone booted?
You just have to change one setting to fix it if the problem is what I think it is.
easy fix...
1. install nova launcher
2. with nova launcher now set as launcher hold on homescreen to create new shortcut.
3. select new short cut > activities.
4. scroll down the list until you see "Update Device"... click update device then look for a "Branding" submenu.
5. Click on "Branding" and you will make a "Branding" shortcut on your Homescreen.
6. Click new "Branding" shortcut and set Branding to "Sprint"
Thank Autoprime for posting this fix. All your sprint apps will come back too. If that doesn't fix it PM me.

"Update Device" isn't in that list, and I didn't see Branding or anything like it in some other submenus I tried.
Just found this thread (not sure how I missed it when I was searching and reading thread titles before posting my thread). It is full of people with varying degrees of the same "problem" I have, but for some of them significant things are missing, like mobile network settings and so on. The fix is basically flashing the RUU and letting it download its Sprint package a few minutes after connecting to the network after that, then rebooting. I'm backing up all my apps now to give that a try.

PM me your serial number
Alright, I flashed the RUU, updated the profile and PRL and ... got the Sprint icons on the second home screen to show up! But mostly they are just links to the Play Store and the items are not available for my carrier as my carrier is still HTC. Does anyone know of a way to force my phone to get reprovisioned entirely? Maybe that would help....
And now confirmed not a demo unit, just a regular old Sprint One. So it must be something with how it got activated, right?

What is this icon?

Came back to the phone and my theme had changed and this icon was to the left of the bluetooth icon. Checked the QS and nothing else is turned on.
Looks like the firmware update symbol?

Don't have that either, using adhell 2.
It just means your phone is currently rotation locked to 'Portrait' try changing it to auto rotate and the icon should be gone

How did you get adhell 2 to work?
The last I read, it's not supported on the N8 yet, even with the Samsung Developer License Key.
Tried installing and I get the 'not supported' message.
Thanks.

I already had the developers license so just install from here and used the license and it worked. I saw somewhere, can't remember that it had been updated to the Note 8, tried a week a go and didn't work but it's fine now.

carrier logo in notification

So I have a unlocked note8 from best buy. Got my service from metro pcs. Now this might seem petty but I cannot stand the fact that it says metro pcs when I drop down my notification bar. Does anyone know how I can remove just this logo. As seen in picture
I'm using Substratum and wings themes, I believe one of the navigation bar mods removed mine as mine doesn't show my carrier at all when I swipe down.
Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
It is not a logo, but just shows to what network provider you are connected. It shows in stock fw and will be updated e.g. when roaming. If no cell service you'll don't see the name/logo.
Don't understand the issue
It is standard, all stock notes show it, you can change it or get rid of it, but you need to install mod to do it

Download & install this apk, then reboot. Carrier name with be removed from the lockscreen & the bottom of the notification panel. To reverse it, simply uninstall the apk from your app list (it won't be in your app drawer) then reboot. Works on Note 8 with Nougat. Source: tytydraco.
Had it on my att unlocked running a T-Mobile sim. Flashed carrier to T-Mobile and now it's gone
Just installing the apk? Is it a theme, overlay or standalone?
Yeah just install the apk & reboot. Original thread states RRO overlay. I tried it, works fine & uninstalls easily. Other than that I know nothing more about it, just remember running into it a while back. I don't care for hiding the carrier, I never notice them anyway & it's a good indicator to know of your roaming or sim dies.

Yeah I'm a dumb ass. Thank you for the apk file. It works great.
too bad it doesn't work on Oreo.

US Unlocked N9 on T-Mob

I've read some posts here (and other sources), seems WiFi calling, HD calling are supported and there's a couple work arounds for the camera Shutter sound. What about voicemail? Prefer to go unlocked and keep the bloat ware off. Any other surprises on an unlocked N9?
Coming from Sprint where I had to buy their LG V20 (after a very bad N4 experience) to keep most of these calling features. But it's time for a change now that I moved and T-Mob has better coverage than Sprint (probably true everywhere).
Using note 9 unlocked on t mobile. Everything works except video calling but if you really want that, then you can flash just the tmobile CSC file via Odin. That will add the video calling tab back on the dialer. It will not add the t mobile bloat apps but i do believe you will get the t mobile splash screens on boot/shut down
Thanks for the response and suggestion, that's very helpful.
I tried downloading the Visual Voicemail app from the Play Store on the U1 and had no luck getting it to work. The same happened when I had an S9+ running the U1 firmware. When you flash to the TMB U firmware though, it is included and does work. If you choose to flash to the TMB U though, you will want to brush up on some ADB commands to remove some of the T-Mobile bloat, which is still a lot less than most other carriers.

Not a customer but I like to be able to assist people who are. Can you tell me the problems you had with the app from Play Store while running U1?

You can use the visual voicemail app on the unlocked note 9 for tmo, you just have to go to the app settings and enable all permissions. For some reason the app never asks you to enable the permissions, but after changing the settings it works fine.

I will give that a try the next time I have one of my devices on U1.

When you are saying T-mobile CSC, are you talking about CSC or USERDATA CSC? Thank you for your answer.

No such thing as USERDATA CSC. USERDATA and CSC are two different files in the Odin image. In this case he is saying you should flash the TMB CSC (not HOME CSC, since that won't do anything) and the feature will appear for you. I am most curious about this, since it would mean applying U build files to a U1 build. I don't have much experience with that.
I recently bought an unlocked U1 but flashed the TMB U firmware on it a few days ago. I only did so because I heard the data speeds were substantially higher (can anyone confirm/deny this?).
Also, is there any way to get visual voicemail to work through a phone app? It's just so seamless on something like an iPhone or Pixel but I've never gotten it to work on my Note. I really don't want to use a whole separate app just for that.

Have you tried going into Settings, Apps, and enabling permissions for the app? For some reason, the app doesn't have any permissions when you install it from the Play Store. Try giving it Storage, Phone, and Contacts to see if that gets it working for you.

What you heard about speed is a rumor. The speed is no different on U1.

Do you mean to say if I give the standalone visual voicemail app permissions that it'll show up accessible in my phone app (as an extra voicemail tab)? If so that'd be great but from the way you worded it I assume you mean just using the app itself which I was trying to avoid.

Good to know; thank you. From my understanding then it doesn't really matter except for updates? I got the impression the unlocked gets quarterly security updates while the T-mobile generally monthly (but a month behind). Pretty sure they're both on the Sept. update right now so it's hard for me to tell.

I am not sure about a third party vieual voicemwil app. It can't hurt to give it a try though. I was referring to the T-Mobile Visual Voicemail app.

Ah ok, understood. I've always used phones that had the visual voicemail integrated with the phone app, so it's unfortunate that doesn't seem to be possible in this case.

How To - Google Dialer VVM Activation Steps - YMMV

Ok so I'm posting this because we started to get off topic in the other thread, not because I think you will find it useful lol.
Basically the steps I will outline will trigger your Google Dialer to try and activate VVM. If you are on Sprint like me, all it will do is add the voicemail tab. I've seen posts from others that say the app does import all of their current Voicemails but no new ones after that. Maybe that is carrier specific or maybe if you are signed up for VVM through your carrier it works, I don't personally know.
Anyway, here we go.
What you'll need:
1- A rooted device - I'm guessing this will work on all devices not just our V30s but I haven't tested elsewhere. Feel free to provide feedback if you see this and try it on other phones, and then maybe this post can move to general Android instead of V30.
2- Google dialer installed - mine has been converted to a system app, and I'm part of the beta, so I can update through play store. I am also running magisk modules that may be allowing all of this to happen, such as xml pack, Google framework, and some others. Shout out to their respective devs, thank you.
3 - The app Shortcut Master which is available as a paid app on play store.
4 - some patience because this literally only works sometimes for unknown reasons. Maybe we can narrow down the failure rate with some trial and error but for now I can't tell you why it works sometimes and other times nada. The upside is, there seems to be no I'll effects from trying and failing.
Tldr.
You need root, Google dialer (maybe as as a system app) and the app Shortcut Master to get this done.
You should probably Force close the Google dialer app before you start so the settings take hold. Not sure if you have to, but shouldn't hurt to do it.
Step one:
Open shortcut master. Click search and enter the word "voicemail"
Step two:
You'll see lots of results. Ignore them all and scroll down to ones under the Phone App. Find VoicemailSecretCode and click launch. (I guess you could also just search that instead of just Voicemail)
Step 3:
You'll see a white screen with two options.
Sync
VVM config override < click this one.
Step 4:
Press the top option titled "load current"
You'll see it change some of the fields. This is just pulling in the current config and since you don't have much going on, very little should change.
Step5
Click the Override toggle.
Input your phone number (see pics)
Press back once when done.
Step 6
You should back to the white page with the two options again. This time press sync.
That's it. I'm not sure what makes this work since sometimes it doesn't. If you're hasn't updated with the voicemail section, try power cycling and relaunching dialer. If that doesn't work, clear the cache. If it still doesn't work you can try clearing all data, Force closing, and then following the steps again.
Now you should have the voicemails tab. It will try and activate for a while by sending you a provisioning text. It is going to send this text alot at first so be warned as I don't know if it's a free text (do people still have limited texts??)
You will now have a bit more options in your settings menu under Voicemail, however since it never provisions (or at least mine doesn't) the added options are not accessible.
Enjoy your extra tab of nothingness lol.
Feel free to throw around some thanks
*edit: The 9 attached screenshots are basically all of the steps in order except for the last two which need to be swapped. If you read them left to right you would follow 1-7, then pic 9, then pic 8 would be the last one.

I noticed in your screenshot you never blacked out the 40.
Is that part of your phone number? Or did it load that and you entered your number with it?

I will just say I've only gotten it fully working on the US998 roms (I haven't tried the steps here yet). So it's very possible some carrier branded roms have stuff that mess with apps accessing voicemails, at least ones that use the carrier's database, not 3rd party ones with their own servers like youmail or Google voice. Maybe because some carriers charge for any kind of visual voicemail. Verizon does for the premium transcribing version. Just my 2 cents. I'll see if following this stuff helps me get it working on the vs996 rom I'm on now and report back if I do.

Phone number.
Curious, Where did you get your port info?
Also, noted that your preloaded part of the VVM ends with CVVM while mine is Omtp. Possibly because tmo supports vvm and Sprint is carrier blocked to their own severs???
Have you received some activation texts since reconfiguring? And have any Voicemails loaded?

Since you mentioned Google Voice, I figured it would be a good chance to start the conversation about GV, Sprint, a possible VVM workaround, and a theory I have....
I am sure that someone out there has to know the proper info/settings/specs that would allow us to bypass carrier VM and instead pull from Google Voices VVM service. Or at least I think we can all figure it out through some trial and error.
Right now I have all of my missed calls sent to GV. This allows me to ignore Sprints annoying VM service and paid VVM. All calls bypass sprints VM and instead the message gets transcribed by GVs VVM service. There must be a way to find out what GV ports and packages need to be set and in place in order to tell the dialer to read from there. I've already tried inputting my GV number instead of my Sprint # but all that does is change where the activation texts are sent.
From what I can tell, the Google dialer does not have some VVM server of it's own that it can call on. Nothing in the manifests or code that I could find. It basically only has the ability to piggy back off of a carriers server and relay it into the app as a duplicate (think pop3 / imap).
I believe this is the case because I've seen people post that their dialer absorbed all of their current VVMs but wouldn't find new ones. This probably means that the app is pointed to the place that Vvm are stored either on the device on their carriers server, but they won't get new ones because the app is not authenticated pull data.
So if we can find someone whose Google Dialer pulled in their current batch of VVM and see what their settings look like, we can see what it's pointed at in order to read that data one time and transfer it in. If we can figure out the corresponding file in the GV app, then we ate half way there!
If we can then take that info, and combine it with some knowledge of GV/Google/ and their usual servers ports etc. I think we can create a work around that would allow everyone to get free VVM by setting up a dummy (or real like in my case) Google voice number to use its transcription service instead of the carrier.
Side note for anyone who wants to hear my little conspiracy theory....
Sprint until very recently let you integrate a Google voice account. It's slightly different than just having the Google voice app. Not going to go through all the differences, but basically it was possible to have you GV # carrier integrated until recently.
I think the reason Sprint no longer does this is because Google's VVM rollout. I.e. if GV was still integrated, a quick change of the settings above and it would have properly activated Google's VVM service to work instead of the Sprint version.

Interesting. Just so we can start to trial and error our way to a better world, would you mind sharing a couple details? I may ask everyone to answer a few of these and see if we can start to work our way through this and get to some working versions.
Your Carrier:
Current Carrier VVM status: (i.e do you already have a vvm app o your phone that works, do you pay for it, is it the stock carrier app, etc.)
Since you did the GDialer Configuration Update(the steps in post 1)...
Is your Google Dialer VVM working now?
Have you received provisioning texts? No (you already answered this one)
If you already had a VVM service, did you have transcribed messages in your carrier VVM app?
If yes, did they transfer into your Google Dialer VVM tab?

Good find! I would venture a guess and say that you found something useful there.
Since it looks like that grayed out image is pointing to your TMO VVM box, I would suggest using the two ports listed there and trying them in the Google Dialer Configuration. Meaning the 443 and 8082 #s. I am not sure which is which, but if you try them both maybe it will point the dialer at the stored VVM data.
