Greetings,
I'm not experienced with android devices, so i thought i'd ask here first before trying to do anything.
Since a few months ago some weird things started happening to my X8 - random display glitches and blackouts at completely random intervals (sometimes one or even two a day, sometimes it can last two or more weeks w/o an incident, i haven't figured out any relation yet).
Glitches manifest in distorted view on screen - shifted up/down/sideways - or colored graphics artefacts - up to completely bizarre patterns of random-colored pixels covering the whole screen. Weirdly enough, pushing power button as if to lock the screen usually alleviates the issue, sometimes i need to do it few times to remove completely, but it works. Touchscreen works fine, but i need to tap the "right" spot on the screen, not where it's displayed on the screen ("right" as in where the element is when the screen is not glitching).
The other issue (may be related) i'm having with the phone is random screen "blackouts" - the screen goes completely black and the power button cycling doesn't help - but the phone still reacts to screen input (i.e. i can unlock the screen by dragging the slider, launch app, start/stop music playback and so on). I can see the backlight on, so it's definitely screen/gfx hardware issue, not backlight. If i try to reboot the phone, it hangs on either shutdown or boot up. Removing the battery, placing it back and booting the phone up doesn't help - it vibrates as usual, i see the backlight go up, but screen stays black and i can't interact with the phone even if i leave it there for a few minutes (which is more than enough for it to boot up - it usually takes ~30 seconds till full boot). Also the backlight won't go off. It usually helps to boot normally if i hit the phone with a palm on the back side and/or leave it alone for a while. This issue is much more rare (only had it three times), but it puts the phone out of service for a while, so it's an issue for me.
Now, the device info:
Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 E15i
015 baseband
10W44
Unlocked bootloader
Alfs8 kernel (2.6.29.6-Alfs v08a 24/03/2012)
GingerDX v026 ROM
No cpu tweaks done, cpu governor "ONDEMAND", cpu speeds 122-600.
The glitches started when i was still using the older version, GindgerDX v013 with locked bootloader, i have done factory reset and flashed a new version with new kernel (and unlocked the loader along the way), but apparently it did not help fix the issues.
I can't provide and screenshots/photos of the issue because the only camera i have access to at most times when it happens is my phone one and, obviously, i can't use that in this case
The question is: can i still try to fix it by myself (i can do it if it doesn't involve disassembling the phone completely - i don't have the screwdrivers required) by software tweaks or other techniques or should i reflash stock kernel/rom, apply for warranty and hope they find the defect and fix it? I really do like the phone. Or, maybe, you have encountered anything resembling these issues and may shed some light on what's happening.
Appreciate any input in trying to figure out and fix this.
Thank you if you have read all this even if you can't help me, cheers!
1st problem could be 'Screen Cut' issue which is solved using kernel without FPS Cap...
2nd problem usually happens on my phone with miniCM9 3.0.2 but shows splash and boot animation...
Can you see the splash screen and the bootanimation? Because my friends' Xperia Ray has the issue on official firmware... so it could be hardware damage...
Try unlocking the screen then press the power button then press it again...
and also try flashing the stock firmware... If it doesn't work... I think you should live with it...
Sounds like a hardware problem to me. Reflash stock kernel and ROM and full wipe and then flash a different ROM and see it it still happens. If it does I think it is advisable to send it to Sony for repair.
Sent from my E15i using Tapatalk 2
Thanks for your replies, i'll try reflashing the stock rom and see if it still happens.
@Lily48: no, no splashcreen or boot animation, just black screen and visible backlight.
I have the same problem and I checked it many times and my conclusion is....ITS A HARDWARE PROBLEM NOT SOFTWARE..

Well, notify me if you find a solution, thanks
Sorry for double post, but this is important update:
My phone died this morning with the permanent black screen syndrome. Until i rebooted i could use it to receive phone calls or even listen to music (i knew where to touch to activate the features). However it would not boot sompletely after restart, even if i leave it for ~hour. Connecting to flashtool showed that it does boot to a certain stage, but no GUI (for user interaction with haptic feedback) available - the flashtool does show that device connected with usb debugging enabled.
I reflashed the stock ROM, now it's apparently stuck in some sort of bootloop - it keeps on connecting and disconnecting. But the screen is still black, with backlight. If i remove the battery, replace it and just connect to pc w/o trying to boot on, it acts normally as if trying to charge - backlight activates for a few seconds if i touch a key and green led is lit, but still the screen is black.
I will RMA it tomorrow, thanks for help, hopefully i'll get a new one, or they'll repair this one so it does not glitch on me again. Anyway it was/is a good phone, i absolutely love it.
Wish me luck =]

It is a hardware problem and Sony Service Center is the last option you have.. if your X8 is in warranty period.
I did the same and they replaced its display with new one.
Hello, reporting back in:
Just got my X8 back, it really was a hardware problem. They changed the screen now it works as good as new =]
Thanks everyone for support
I have rooted my Xperia Z. I tried to apply custom font through iFont (Segoe UI, basically what I did was copying the font from Windows 8.1, to phone's internal storage, Xperia Z\Internal Storage\ifont\custom), I opened the app, tapped on the font and then applied it. Since the next step is to reboot the phone, I did so. The phone is now in a bootloop state, it shows the SONY logo, then XPERIA, then the colorful wave. During the wave, it lasts no longer than 1 second, the wave animation always gets stuck halfway across the screen, then goes back to SONY logo, XPERIA logo, the wave and repeats the boot.
I have tried some of the methods such as booting the phone into Recovery Mode. I was told to power off the phone, start it, then when pink LED lights up I have to quickly press Volume Up multiple times until the screen shows the Android logo (which is the green robot). The situation my phone in isn't quite like the expected; since it's in bootloop state, I have to force restart it (by holding Power button + Volume up and wait for a vibration), quickly pressed volume up several times. However, the LED only lights up blue color (not flashing), the screen stays black and nothing seems to be happening until a force restart is initiated.
Right now I don't think flashing ROMs or restore phone to factory setting are the solutions for me because I only started using this Xperia Z recently and didn't make a backup (who knew it'd be so fast that I literally killed it).
By the way, is there a possible way to access files during the blue LED part?

Just flash the firmware using flashtool.
Just untick the datawipe box. :highfive:
I've searched a bit, but not able to find much... Sometimes when daydream kicks on (currently set to 'Clock-Night Mode' and 'while charging') the back and home buttons (sometimes just the back button only) are lit. The buttons being lit doesn't happen EVERYTIME, but often. And, I've not figured out any sort of pattern as to why (I first thought it was a new notification had been triggered {Nope.} or the battery was fully charged {Nope.}).
Any ideas? Running standard OTA 5.0.1, rooted.

Hi,
All of a sudden my HU (KGL 4) (which i have for ~6 months) stopped working , I get a black screen and the buttons illumination is also off .
I've tried to get to recovery and do a reset but nothing changes (black screen)
when i'm pressing the power button for 10 sec i see the buttons lights flicker slightly but nothing else happens .
Only thing that seems to work is the DVD eject
Did anyone encounter such an issue and came out of it without changing board ?
Can it be related to car battery ? (which is old but car starts up fine)
Any recommendations ?
Thanks
it's seems to be same problem with my head unit.....
i'm stuck after installing mods in XposedMTC, resetting itself..... because of a bug, i think
after that i cannot even get into Bootloader screen (-_-')
Anybody help me please

See if this works!
Just created a pre-rooted rom using nordic combined 23.5.A.0.570_R11D and flashed (locked bootloader method). But I have a couple of issues. One is that a few seconds after the phone boots up the screen goes blank and the only way to get a display again is to press the power button for a few seconds which makes the power menu and the home button appear. I'm then able to press the home button. Only seems to happen after reboot. Anyone else seen this? I didn't for one of the UK based roms as I was worried about bloatware / customisations by Vodafone or Virgin Mobile.
The other issue is with the alarm clock - when the alarm goes off the screen comes on but only shows the background wallpaper. Only way to stop the alarm is to hold power button to get power menu and reboot. I've managed to get around this by removing the 20.1.A.0.12 clock app that came with the rom and installing a 20.0.A.0.28 version from KK.
Hmm after another reboot after repairing the alarm clock with the KitKat version the blank screen's not appearing anymore so perhaps related.
Its hardware problem your screen needs to be replaced same happened on my Z3 D6603 and hopefully the warranty saved me
I flashed 4.4.4 then 5.0.2 but same problem so its not a software issue.
I'm facing the same problem the screen goes blank .Nothing work to fix it .I've flashed the phone with lolipop it goes back normal but after few hours it goes blank again.Any idea guys ?

That's what I thought originally as it had just come back from repair after having the screen fixed but I've not had a problem since removing the clock apk.
Hi all,
I'm having this same issue. I've just updated my D5803 to Marshmallow 6.0.1, build 23.5.A.0.570. Ever since the update, whenever I reboot the phone, it shows a black screen, and I have to press and hold the power button to get the home screen icon to show. And when my alarm goes off, just the wallpaper shows. If I press and hold the power button, I can get back to the home screen, but there is no way to turn the alarm off, I have to reboot the phone - not so fun when I just want to hit snooze!
I find it hard to believe no one else has had this issue before this build was officially released? I'm considering going back to the previous version
Edit: Well, this is interesting. If I take the phone out of its case the alarm works fine, put it back in the case, doesn't work. Take it out, it works. Put it in, doesn't work.
Edit 2: So, I reverted to Lollipop 5.1.1 and the alarm and phone worked perfectly. Updated again to Marshmallow - same problems, black screen and alarm not working while in the case, but alarm works when not in the case. Seems pretty definitive to me that it's a Marshmallow problem!
Bug is still present on .575 update. The strange ting is, on my phone when I disable the smart cover(Settings -> Sound & notification -> Notification access) it stays off, and then the phone is working fine. On my colleagues phone's it's switches itself back on after a call. I have no idea why this is not happening on my phone. Can't find any relevant setting differences.
