Check out the section for that phone, and you will get a lot further than asking in the car stereo section: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-mega/development

Hi this is probably a really stupid question but I am new and don't really know what I'm doing lol. I was wondering if there was an easy way to upgrade my sprint hero to 2.2. Google offers the official stock android but I don't know how to install it and I can't figure out the search here. Can someone lead me in the right direction? Maybe link to the right thread? Thanks for the help

Here is a good place to start for general questions and answers:

One thing is for sure your going to have to root your phone before you can do anything so here's the rooting guide for 2.1:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
The official source code for 2.2 doesn't just install on our phone everything has to be packaged in a rom and if its not supported by htc we have to do it ourselves so if you look around in the forums you'll find a lot of good 2.1 custom roms and darchstar built a 2.2 froyo build from the ground up. Good luck.
What is darchstar's 2.2 rom called
Just wanted to double check, newbie here but willing to learn. You have to get to your phone into a root statues, at which point your going to flash a new rom onto it with either 2.1 or 2.2?

that is correct
its not too hard once you finally get set-up
i suggest trying out a basic rom without all the bells and whistles first
then once you realize you can load a rom and you mess with it for a bit, try flashing a new kernal, try using overclock, try out a new launcher even *adw or helix.....*, then if you're still feeling good you can try jit
by then you should understand a bit more.
So I got my phone last December and within a month, had it rooted - mainly to get rid of bloatware. I was using Cognition ROM at first, but then a guy at an ATT authorized retailer showed me a different rom that unlocked HSPA. The ROM that he gave me, which I later installed using ROM manager has the filename: KILLER23D+XXJPUDoc_V4.0_wipe. Has there been an update to this ROM? I love everything about it and am also wondering if there are any ROMs that are any better than this? I'm still pretty new at using the xda website and forums...
I like to tinker around, but am still afraid of bricking my phone. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys for all the hard work you all do.
p.s. I noticed my phone now thinks it is the Galaxy S GT-I9000... so would I download new ROMs for that phone or the Captivate?
Killer23d's out off date. it hasn't been updated since 11th December 2010. Their are many great 2.2 and 2.3 roms in the development section. Take a look around , you should be able to find one that is to your pleasing. Read the authors instructions and be sure you understand them before you flash anything
Be sure to read the Stickies they tell you about installing rom and other good stuff that you should know. And search around if you have any questions before you post, cause it might have been already answered.
And if you have a captivate you download captivate roms
good luck
I guess I really want to know which ROM is most like official 2.2 or 2.3? I definitely want to make sure I can still install unknown apps, and have the stock alarm clock on the phone because I use the alarm all the time and I don't want to have to download another one from the market. Do you have any preferences on ROMs that would do all this?
I also am a little confused on the ODIN stuff. Since I'm already rooted and using ROM Manager to flash ROMs, do I always need to flash ODIN before installing a new ROM? I read on here somewhere that the author metioned something about that, but how it was worded was a little confusing
I don't refer roms to people it is all personal choice. All roms can install off market apps
for roms in general* http:////forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
*2.3 roms need gb bootloaders
A friend of mine asked me to root his phone for him. I personally have a rooted and ROM'ed Samsung Epic so this is not exactly new to me. My first question is what is the best way to root and ROM this phone? After searching around my head is spinning a bit about this. For my Epic I was able to do a one click root that also installed CWM. After that I was able to use Clockwork to flash new ROM's and kernels.Second the reason he gave me for wanting to root was to be able to have WiFi tethering. Am I going to need to install a custom ROM for his phone or is there an app that will give him this feature once we have his phone rooted? Thanks in advance for all of the help!
Quickest, basic answer...
For Root... [APP]SuperOneClick v2.3.2
For the tethering question, he will have to check out a Rom that offers it as one of the options (most do). Don't ask what Rom is recommended, he will have to make the choice depending on his preferences to the specifics offered in a Rom. There are plenty of choices here... Captivate Android Development
Your right about the ROM so I removed the question. I guess I was looking for some recommended ROM's that were stable and everything worked. Thanks!
I realize this horse has been ridden before but.. If you can take pity on yet another noob the please read on.
I've been trying to learn how things work with rooting (did that using super one click.. the easy way), and flashing a rom (didn't do that). I've read alot of sites, and lots of threads on XDA and there is alot of information but alot of it is outdated or for old stock ROM's and so on.
Here is my problem I have a rogers samsung captivate i896 running stock 2.3.3. the wiki page for this model assumes you are running 2.2 froyo. I can't seem to find information on how to flash a ROM on a stock 2.3.3 i896 (this could be because I suck at searching or.. I am just stupid). Also ROM manager does not recognize my captivate.
If you could provide me some links where I can read and learn about flashing(for my phone, then hopefully others), kernels, bootloaders, lagfix,,modems and so on.. Man I would really appreciate it.
I drive truck for a living and I really don't have time to search for all the scattered info and stitch it together.
My goal is to learn everything I can about my phone and flashing ROM's and learning and understanding the terminology. If I can do this then I would pass the knowledge onto other people.
I realize alot of you vets and senior members have very little patience for people like myself who don't (or can't) put the time that you have put in to learn. So I can only promise that when I do learn I will pass on the knowledge and hopefully lean how to come up with some new stuff myself.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Here you go. I can't answer questions about it because I don't have your phone. It is called the fugu root method which is what you use to root gingerbread. Good luck.
you do not need root to flash a custom rom...recovery happens underneath the os where root isnt a factor, and any rom you flash will be rooted after the flash.
rom manager is garbage erase it from your memory.
read the 【Guide】How To flash Captivate ROMs from Stock (inc. Gingerbread ROMs)
since you are already o ginger bread you can skip step 5,6, and 8.

there is no such thing.
And why don't you try it for yourself? you will get to experience it first hand. And if your scared then don't use odin or cwm or even rooting because there are always risks involved in these.

The SGSII v8.1 patch u r talking about is jst a patch for the COmplete v8 ROM. it has recently been updated to v9 and it really is a gud ROM the Battery life is also better in the LAtest Release and it is almost stock based so u won't find A WHOLE LOT of UI changes on your ACe jst additions, and the PErformance is also gud.
other than this, you can try the MIracle ROM it is also a wonderful ROM bt as it is performance based, u can't expect a battery life of 1 day
As you roam around the forums you will learn slowly by trying and testing stuff.
Ohh and ACTUALLY, there is NO perfect ROM
