I'm thinking there is a hardware issue going on here, but any insight is appreciated.
I cannot boot from my battery. When I pull the battery and re-insert it screen shows it as empty, but... when I put in the battery with the USB connected to my computer, then it does show the battery as full. (and I am able to boot normally).
I've also noticed:
When booting this way (or out of recovery) I get a brief scrambled image before the i896 - Samsung logo appears
The battery charging and USB connected indicators will not change from what they are in when the phone is booted. So if i remove the usb after it has booted with them in, the battery indicator remains charing, and USB connected. (If I leave it for a long while, sometimes it does eventually detect it properly and switch over to disconnected).
Any thoughts would be really appreciated. I've talked to Rogers and they are sending a replacement, but I'd like to know what the problem is before I let Samsung start pulling it apart to look for water damage.
Thanks!
I found the solution to my issue:
(cannot link, search for usb connected notification stays after usb disconnected on android central.)
Turns out there was either surface corrosion or simply crud in my phone side USB port which was causing the connection mechanism to misfire or not fire at all. I guess when booting without USB, the phone thought it was connected so it just doesn't try to get power from the battery (who knows).
The linked thread had lots of responses, so I'm not sure why I didn't find it here or on android forums. I was able to fix the problem by cleaning out the port.
Hope this helps,
Captivate build 1008 here, running stock Froyo now (but the same problem occurred with stock JH7). Not rooted, but unlocked.
The problem: the "USB connected" notification comes up pretty randomly when the phone is NOT connected via USB. When this is the case and I power off, the phone refuses to power back on. If I pull the battery and put it back in, the "spinning sun" icon (???) comes up, followed by the battery charging icon, exactly as if I had connected the phone to the charger---and the battery is shown to be completely empty, even when it's not.
Usually, after doing this a few times, the phone comes back up.
This is driving me insane. The fact that the problem is random makes me think of a hardware issue, but any wisdom would be greatly welcome. I'd hate to have to send my phone in for service or replacement :-(
Thanks in advance! M

I had the same issue yesterday. Here's what I did: turned off the phone, pulled the battery, pulled the sim card, pulled the microSD card, waited one minute, then put everything back in. USB icon is all gone!
My phone did that after I upgraded to froyo. I turned off USB debugging and powered off my phone and I have not had the issue anymore.

I'm seeing the same/similar issue when I charge my phone and remove. I can get it to toggle off by inserting the USB and messing around with the various connection prompts ("Kies" or "Mass Storage"). Don't recall exactly.
@aicirt17 OK, I'll try removing the SIM card, too (I haven't done that). I don't have an external MicroSD car. Thanks.
@mmarquis I also fiddle with those settings. It's the randomness of it all that kills me :-(
Initially, it wouldn't switch on at all but, after a while it showed the battery empty gauge and wouldn't turn on, even though the power cord was attached - and, in any case, it should have been fairly well charged.
After a while I opened it up again and it had a dialog in the centre of the screen saying 'Android is upgrading... Please unplug the power adapter before updating the Pad firmware'. I did; it turned off.
Subsequently, though, it turned on with the power and dock connected and everything was working as normal. The dock was charging, but the tablet wasn't.
I've done a factory reset from the Settings menu to see if there was something about the interrupted firmware update that had stopped it charging and it still worked afterwards, but still wouldn't charge. I did an erase/reload from the Bootloader menu and that didn't help either, but then prompted me for a system update. This insisted I had the power cord in (which seemed to make more sense...) but after the first reboot it didn't restart. I gave up at that point and, when I went back it was saying 'Android is upgrading... Please unplug the power adapter before updating the Pad firmware' again.

Yeah, those Charger plugged and not plugged messsages are totally misleading. First it says disconnect the charger (otherwhise update would not continue) and when the update is actually underway it says "do not disconnect the charger during the update".
Yeah, right, Asus. Totally makes sense.

And, of course, if you don't unplug the power when it tells you to, it doesn't proceed. And if you do, there's no charge, so it switches off. And you're back to square one... If the firmware change fixes the charging problem, I'll never know because it won't install.
leave the tab only charging over night still happening return it

This is probably a bit late to help, but for what it is worth, I have had a similar problem with my almost new ASUS TF701T; it simply would not charge. Dock battery State of Charge (SoC) fell to 0% (although all keyboard functions operated normally, I suspect powered by the Tab battery), and the Tab SoC steadily fell from a high % slowly towards discharged.
Nothing I could do would get the thing to charge, either the Tab or the Dock.
A bad charger or a bad cable was the next thing to suspect. I did try to charge from different power points - always the same. No charge (although, to be fair, the "Power Saver" icon did show that charging was occuring, but still the SoC fell. There were no charging lights on either the dock or the tab).
I considered Factory Resets as suggested by various forums, but fortunately, I didn't. I eventually ordered a new USB charger cable. And still no charge.
It was then, by accident, that I tried yet another power outlet for charging - heh Presto! Full charging almost immediately.
What had changed? It was then I noticed that on all previous charging attempts where I experienced this difficulty, I was plugging the charger into either power points, or power boards which had "surge protection". And by chance, this last time, I had plugged the charger into a "non-protected" power outlet.
I have since replicated the problem, and as such I have concluded that the ASUS charge adaptor does not like power which is subject to "surge protection" as so many power points are these days.
In my case, the power network is 240VAC 50Hz, but I suspect that "surge protection" can be implemented on any grid power system.
I hope this helps someone.
Hi there HTC fans.,
I'm having a problem with my HTC Desire 500, and I really need your help because I can't really figure out the cause of it. Basically, my phone just doesn't want to charge anymore.
The problem first started at work. I had to download some photos from my phone into the PC from work, and I did that using a data cable from one of my colleagues. At first, the phone didn't connect to the PC, but after I unplugged it and connect it back, it worked and I was able to copy the photos I needed. However, a notification message appeared on my HTC's screen. The message was "Your phone is in USB Host Mode" or something like that. I'm having this Desire 500 for about 6 months and this message never appeared before when I copied things from or into my phone. I ignored that message and I unplugged the data cable and carried on my work.
When I went home, I tried to charge my phone but that didn't worked. I tried the both ways available: directly with AC charger and connected to my PC. But nothing happened; no charging signal, no red LED on. Nothing. I tried to go into fastboot, and even made a factory reset, but still the phone didn't charge.
However, I noticed today that somehow (by a miracle) the phone started charging when I used the same data cable that I downloaded those photos at work.
In conclusion, my HTC Desire 500 can't charge unless I use that specific data cable (from one of my colleagues).
So my question is: why is this happening and how I can solve my problem?
Thanks in advance for all of your answers and sorry for my bad english.
Maybe USB port is damaged? Check if there isn't anything suspicious inside your phone USB or the cable plug

Thanks for your answer, lgiK.
1) regarding the phone's USB - I don't think it's a problem with the phone's USB jack, because the phone actually charged with the data cable from the colleague that I've told you about. He also has a microUSB cable (like all the other Android devices).
2) regarding the cable plug - I don't think the problem is with the cable plug, because I've tried to charge the phone at home with 3 different AC chargers (all from other Android based devices), but it still won't charge.
I really don't think that it's a hardware problem, I suspect that it's more a software bug (or something similar). I think that mainly because that message appeared for the first time ("Your phone is in USB Host Mode"), although I'm having this phone for nearly 6 months.
Did anyone had the same problem like I do?

Last night my phone completely ran out of battery and has turned off. I put it to charge on a normal AC charger, and I noticed this morning that his battery was full.
So... yes, I suppose the phone charges when it's turned off.

Then try factory reset. Maybe there is something wrong in the software of the phone. Switching modes USB is a software issue. In the USB host mode, the phone is not charging.

I've already did that, but no change occured. I also tried going into fastboot (that also didn't helped). So i'm running out of options. The phone is still in guarantee, so I'm thinking I will just take the phone to them.

Maybe this help:
Guys,
I had the same "in USB host mode, can not charge" problem when the power is on, after 3 months of use of my new HTC One. It may be related to the charger but I am not 100% sure. It was very annoying and I had to turn the phone off before plugging in the power cable to charge. It happened when I was in Taiwan, so, I called the HTC help line there and they gave me a solution.
The guy on the other end asked me to go to Power setting and click off the "Fast Boot" and "Power Saver Mode" options first. ( I am not sure if these steps are necessary, but, anyway I did as he requested.) Then, power off the phone by pushing down "Power Off" for 2-3 seconds to allow restarting in Safe Mode. Once the phone restarts in Safe Mode, some of the Apps may not work but the phone can be charged normally. After restarting my phone in it's normal mode, the "USB Host Mode, Can't Charge phone" problem was gone. I can charge your phone normally and also click back on the "Power Saver Mode" and "Fast Boot" options in Power Setting, without problems. I hope this will also work for your phone.

Check the usb connector. And then just send in for repair.
Since about a week my my Nokia 7 plus is acting up.
Apparently it will only charge after it goes through a reboot while being connection to the charger. After a while nothing will work.
I suspect that the bootloader configures everything for charging correctly but that the Android OS (Android 10, latest security patch) is doing something strange to the USB (maybe after a glitch or something else).
A probably relates issue is that nothing works anymore in the USB settings window and there is permanent notification that says that the 'connected device is being charged via USB'. When tapping that notification the USB setting pop up but nothing can be changed.
The (impossible to change) setting is stuck at USB tethering.
Changing this via developper options seels to work visually but does not impact the fact that charging is not working apparently.
How can I clean the state of the USB driver of Android without having to do a factory reset (annoying due to a lot of MFA stuff ...)

Have you tried other chargers. That reboot is probaly normal. Do you mean with reboot if the phone is turned off and you plug the charger in you see the "android one" boot up and it turns off?
Also try turn off developer options. There are a lot of usb settings. And if that doesnt work try factory reset the settings only. You will lose all settings changes which i may guess that isnt important.

Thank you for the reply.
I did try many chargers (car, multiple plugs, USB of Mac USB of computer) and cables (at least 3).
The reboot is a means to trigger that at least it starts showing a lighting in the batterysmbol and yesterday it even charged correctly at that time. Today that is unfortunately not true anymore
I will try with developper options off to check if it makes a difference but I doubt it.
As indicated I would like to avoid a factory reset as it would cause me quite some effort to reconfigure the multiple MFAs again
