Frequent No Service on Moto G6...sim tray issue possibility? - Moto G6 Questions & Answers

I just moved from a failing Moto X Pure 2015 to a Moto G6, I've been getting a lot of no service not even 1X for phone calls...just a blank signal meter and no service. Sometimes it would take a minute to come back or I could toggle airplane mode on and off. I noticed the sim tray the sim just kinda sits in there and there's some slight bit of play compared to the moto X sim tray where the sim card would almost snap into place and there was virtually no movement (verizon nano sim). Anyway I took the sim back out of the moto g6 and carefully scotched taped the sim card down in the tray. Not sure if that's the issue or not I'll know if it doesn't do the no service thing for a couple of days. Just curious if anyone else has experienced anything similar with these phones?

Hi, I'm experiencing the same issue, but as far as my carrier has poor coverage in my zone, I thought it was normal... so you solved it scotchtaping the simcard in the tray?

Being a cellphone technician a loose sim connection would cause a "no sim" issue. Poor reception or antenna issue would cause the no service. At worst case the radio in the phone would be malfunctioning.

I've experienced the same issue with my G6 Play. I suspect its software related in some way.. simply because if it were a SIM card problem, toggling the airplane wouldn't bring my signal back.
Doing a complete wipe through twrp, reinstalling software, magisk, etc... actually brought mine back to life. In 3 weeks since doing it, I've have zero 'no service' outtages. (I've lost service while traveling out of area, or had a sporadic no service at home, but it required doing nothing other than moving to another area of the house to bring it back.)
Perhaps I'd suggest you look into doing a complete reset/restore.
Just a suggestion.

Phone "forgets" it has a SIM card

Have a XT-1053 on Net10. Every once in a while I'll turn on my phone (from screen off, not powered down) and it displays the notification that I don't have a SIM card installed and can only use the phone for emergency use. Rebooting doesn't seem to help, I have to remove and reinsert the SIM card and reboot. Running 4.2.2.
Anyone else running into this issue? Is it likely a marginal SIM card, an Android issue (similar to what is reported regarding AIO on 4.4), the APN settings or possibly a problem with the phone hardware? The problem re-occurrence is anywhere from minutes to weeks.
If rebooting doesn't fix the problem then it's not firmware related, instead it sounds like a physical contact issue. Is the sim card a proper nano sim or something that has been cut down to fit? I'd get a replacement nano sim, if the problem still occurs have the phone replaced.
I have had the same issue, the sim card was replaced never had the issue again.

Unfortunately, it was cut down by the selling vendor (a Net10 reseller). Although they sell iphone's which must come installed with nano SIMs, they do not sell nano SIMs by themselves. You have no choice but to cut down a full/micro SIM. For all I know, they are doing the same for the iphone sales as well. Seems like many of the MVNOs are similar in not selling nano SIMs right now (Red Pocket is the one exception I've seen offer them).
It does make sense that a reboot not fixing the problem points to a problem with the SIM or phone.
Cut down sim is a massive red flag - 99.99% that is the issue. They also really shouldn't be doing that, are they also thinning the sim by sanding it? The nano sim is thinner, it is very hard on the sim socket to use a regular sim cut down to nano size as it's technically too thick for the socket.

The Net10 SIM I received didn't look like the vendor thinned it at all. I used a bit of sandpaper on the backside and cleaned up the edges a touch before installing it. Maybe it needs a bit more sanding. The Moto X must be one of the few Android phones to use a nano SIM. If an MVNO has a SIM for an iPhone 5/s/c, that should work in a Moto X, right? Never know if Apple's done something funky which would create an incompatibility with other phones using the same SIM.
A nano sim is a nano sim, so if they happen to have a proper sim for an iphone 5/c/s then it's the exact one that should be in your Moto X.
Just happened again, and this time a reboot was all it took. This is looking a bit more complex. Measured the original T-Mobile nano SIM at a thickness of .68mm so sanded the Net10 cut down nano SIM to close to the same thickness. At these tolerances it difficult to get a consistent thickness across the entire card, but got as close as possible.

This!
I've not had an issue with my moto X, but my old samsung infuse would often give 'no sim' and 'no service' messages for a while.
A restart would usually solve the issue, but not always. Eventually i took the sim card out and cleaned the contacts a bit. Never had an issue again.
Happened again last night. Reboot didn't work, but popping the SIM in/out did work without even rebooting. Think it time to switch out the SIM card itself and see if the problem continues.
I've experienced the same issue with my cut Straight talk SIM card...Usually, it takes about 2 mins and it comes back and works fine.

I let it sit overnight hoping it would come back, but no luck. Even sanded down the thickness to = nano SIMs, but it's still problematic. Until I have some experience with a real nano SIM, I'm not calling it a phone hardware problem.
I have a real Nano-Sim and it does this sometimes.... Usually decides to work again in around 30 seconds

Had this issue using AIO with an Official micro SIM, whichever sim is the smallest, had the issue with tmobile as well. Have an XT 1053

[Q] Anyone else have this issue getting the no service icon?

I bought the unlocked GSM Moto X that is rooted and has the bootloader unlocked. ROM is stock 4.4 Kitkat Every time after I shut the phone off, it doesn't have any service when it turns back on. I usually have to shut it off and turn it on a few times and mess with the SIM card. Also, the wi-fi won't turn on, either. It just gets stuck on the 'turning on' message but never actually turns on. It kind of seems like the phone just gets stuck in airplane mode and won't come out of it or something.
The biggest potential problem is that I cut a micro SIM card down to a nano SIM to fit in the Moto X. I use my phone on Straight Talk and they don't have a nano SIM yet. But I don't think the cut SIM card is the issue. The phone came with some T-Mobile SIM card. Even though it doesn't have any service from T-Mobile associated with it, when I put the T-Mobile SIM in, it will show that there is service and wi-fi will work. However, after the phone shuts off and I put the T-Mobile SIM in, it still says no service. Plus, the my cut Straight Talk SIM works perfectly fine until the phone shuts off.
Even though it would make sense that cutting my SIM card would cause this problem, I really don't think that's the case. It seems like it's more of a software issue at this point. Does anyone else have this problem or have any insight?

Consider installing the T-Mobile SIM, calling your carrier, asking to activate a new cell phone, and read them the SIM number (it's also on the box's label).

The problem is that I unlocked the booloader and voided my warranty. So there will be no new phone for me. Plus, I bought it straight from Motorola through the Moto Maker

Droid Turbo on T-Mobile. Need Help!

So I've had my droid turbo for a month now and I've been using it on T-Mobile and it has worked fine, no issues whatsoever, until yesterday when the service just stopped working. I have no signal at all. I took it to T-Mobile and they couldn't fix it and then Verizon who also couldn't fix it. I tried At&t and Verizon sim cards and they work, but for some reason T-Mobile sims don't work anymore, I woke up and it just had no signal. Also, whenever i put in my sim, i get the message "Restricted access changed voice service is blocked" Please help!!

I've been on T-Mobile with my Turbo for a little over a month now. Delete any APNs if you have any, reboot and test.
If no profit..
Turn wifi, Bluetooth, nfc, anything that connect to any kind of network off and run it dead, then charge it to full and boot back up then turn what you need back on, should have signal again.
If not..
Try another sim from T-Mobile, yours may be damaged if you frequently take the tray out over and over..
The Last possible solution would be to reset the phone entirely, so make backus f what you need beforehand. Then set it up from last backup saved to google if you have one and pop the sim in, let it sit 2-5 mins, reboot, then give it ~2 mins and you should have signal recovered.
If not, then may be an update gone awry or if you have it rooted and such, maybe something you used broke it.
Last problem would be a bad antenna, so try all the above before trying to replace the antenna.
Hope the best of luck for you :
Only Problems I've had on my Turbo was it turning wifi off randomly here and there, making me do a reboot every few days.
Dropped signal once, but that during initial use, so not much to blame on it there
I've been using a Turbo on tMob since 2 wks after release. That said I've run into the same thing a couple times over the past yr. Out of nowhere it just acts up & stops working. As suggested above I'd say about the smae things. So to no repeat it all my first suggestion is try getting a new Sim card from tMob. First time it happened to me it was my sim, other 2 times it was not, sim was good. Only option to fix it on my end was a factory reset of the device. On the resets tho I made sure to use tMob sim, but i also did not start the process until the msg pops up on the turbo saying its " Not a Verizon sim card" i'd clear that and then start the process of resetting it. So far so good as of late, been at least 3-4 months since the last time i was having troubles.

Network outage issues on Note8

Hi
I have been having issues with my Note8. It loses the cellular network periodically, and doesnt acquire it back. A reboot is required to get the network back but then doesnt last long. I have tried most everything. Listed in order
1. Reseating the Sim / Removing the SD card to check if that was an issue
2. Switching network from 4G to 3G to see if that was the issue
3. Factory reset a few times, including once while not installing apps and letting the phone run with less apps
4. Changing SIMs
5. Changing SIM tray with an S8
6. Using another network sim card
7. Running the phone in Safe mode.
I have exhausted everything that I can have done. Any other thoughts or suggestions?
Phone is within warranty so I can get it fixed, but the issue is that I live in a different country now and they will charge to just take a look at the phone.
Side effect is that while hunting for the network, the phone gets hot and runs down the battery.
I am hoping that there might be a software issue, as the phone does connect to the network for a while before losing connection.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks a lot.
It looks like you have done all of the obvious stuff - it's starting to sound like a hardware fault to me.
Thanks! My worst fear unfortunately.
Was hoping someone might have a software solution or something else which I could try but...
i had same problem with 2 x galaxy s8
after they test for a month and big fighting with those F customer care
they replaced 1 with sealed box and the other one they changed the motherboard which doesn't help , still same problem
i sold both

"invalid SIM" messages

Moto G6 Google Play version
Phone gets "invalid SIM detected" messages throughout the day. After a few seconds or minutes, the network comes back on line. I've reinserted the SIM multiple times to no avail.
This is a refurb replacement for a new phone that died within a week. (https://forum.xda-developers.com/mo...tory-reset-t3880961/post78471445#post78471445) We didn't have SIM issues with the other phone.
I'll try to get a new SIM from Fi, but I'm worried it's a hardware issue.
Has anyone had any SIM problems? If it's the tray I would have to send in for a second replacement within a month. The Boss is getting pissed off at having to swap phones so often.
That only happens on mine when I update the profile. Sounds like either a hardware or network connection problem. I'm sure you already surmised those 2 things yourself.
Sorry I wasn't more help
