Rom suggestions - Moto G5S Plus Questions & Answers

After my G5 plus died,
I bought this phone hoping for a similar great dev community.
Trying to read through every post,it's difficult to gague which Roms are truly stable and also are ongoing in development...
Could someone please share their thoughts on what they find to be a great rom. I currently am unable to flash 5 Roma a day like I used to,so I hope that perhaps someone has and can lend me some insight..
I am happy with quirks in a rom..but what worries me is I require a few things mandatory for my life.
Bluetooth without drain (I play music at work)
Magisk (Viper sound)
Xposed
Nfc bank app payment
Modem that doesn't have absurd Signal issues
Not too many reboots in a day
No boot loops that require me to go home and use fastboot
what is everyone's thoughts..
Thank you very much

Mmmmmm, almost all ROMs for Moto G5s plus has Android 9 and Xposed is not developed for it. The only ROM I know has a 8.1 version where you can use Xposed is Pixel Experience. It passes safety net and worked flawlessly. I won't lie you: I never tried Xposed on that ROM using that Android Version. If you want to, go ahead and try, maybe it works. Also you said you want to use bank payment with NFC. NFC usually works, but the issue is between Xposed and safety net... Those pals don't get along well... I tried it once using nougat and it didn't worked. I think I'm not forgetting anything! Good luck!

Not too worried about safety net as I don't use Google pay and I switched to a bank that doesn't care if I'm rooted or pass safety net. (lol previous bank decided to ban rooted phones so I told them why I left) and I will be happy to go to either 8 or 9.0 as lollipop has stupid Bluetooth drain anyway. I guess xposed isn't that big of a deal.. I'll try the pixel experience one then thank you

Ps..my web browser is signed in to my old account and my android app a different account so I am op

It depends if you want a customizable one or a similar one to native. If you want a similar one to native the Pixel Experience(the one with Android 9) is the one for you. If you want a customizable one, I recommend you Havoc, Superior OS or AEX... They are great ROMs and offer lot of custom functionality and are very stable. Also there is people there uploading last security patches. There are other ROMs but I didn't have enough time to try them all . Some of them are great(very beautiful ones), but some of them are not upgraded with every month security patch or don't fix features that are working bad. I tried Pixel Experience lot of times and it worked great! Never disappointed me with big issues! About the customizable ROMs, I tried some of them for over a month and they are really cool too... It depends if you want to pass safety net... I don't remember which passes and which does not, hope this helps!

Wow - IMO it should be illegal for companies to sell phones without granting customers root access to their own device!
If you don't have root, it's not really even your phone. No, you are carrying a phone that is setup by somebody else/some other company with the software that THEY want running on it and you have no way to remove/disable the things that you don't want...

I agree.that's why I stick currently to the cheap Moto line because I instantly unlocked the bootloader and rooted plus magisk and xposed..the only issue is the own 7.1 Rom has Bluetooth battery drain issue so would like to upgrade

Wow thank you so very much for your detailed helpful advice.you have really helped me out thank you. I'm going to try the havock then.just have to upgrade to oreo first

You can upgrade from Nougat to Pie. It's okay. But you should have some considerations first. Android Pie ROMs use treble recovery. There is a TWRP version of that. You have to flash that recovery in order to flash some packages like magisk and because with some ROMs is required. Another consideration only if you are flashing magisk: flash the latest package, you will save some trouble on some ROMs. And the last: if you notice fingerprint is not working don't freak out, there is a package that solves that too! Ohhh I was actually forgetting about another detail... If you notice you can't record videos with WhatsApp then you are missing EIS(some stabilization stuff), there is a package for that too. And if you have issues with safety net... You guessed! There is another package for that too! Also Magisk have a module for that but sometimes it worked and sometimes it messed it all! Try it only if the package for safety net fails. If you have trouble finding the packages ask me! Happy testing!

Android Pay - to root or not to root

I was about to root my phone, when I read a saw a thread in Top Forum Discussions regarding Android Pay not working with root.
For me this is a huge problem
One of the reasons I bought this phone, was because of the amazing community behind custom roms.... however;
Android Pay is just way too convenient for someone like me, living in London. I use public transport, and am able to use contactless payments basically anywhere I go.
For me this means I won't root my phone anymore, can't enjoy any great customs anymore, and kind off kills the reason for me even buying this phone. Not that it isn't a great phone, it's just that a lot of different options would've been available for me.
Anyone else in the same boat?
PS: Before stating there are other ways to pay; if you've ever used Android Pay for a week in a city where you can use it ANYWHERE you go, every bar, shop, supermarket, etc. You'd understand the convenience in daily life
EDIT: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/mod-magisk-v1-universal-systemless-t3432382
Apparently there is a solution as of today!
Exodus rom passes the safetynet challenge with google, so you can use android pay on there (without root ofc), there are a few others but can't remember which ones, and i'm not flashing a load to find out right now - with your story, same here - contactless is everywhere!
Could you elaborate on that? You have to root the device to be able to flash the rom right?
Don't lose your hope and have a look here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/mod-rootcloak-completely-hide-root-t2574647
Maybe it could be a good solution to face that problem. In my case, in spite of I have rooted my device, after installing that Xposed mod, I can pay with my phone everywhere using my ING Direct bank account without problems.
Sounds great! I'll take a look
I feel your pain @ Pengod I'm in the same boat, this is the first Android device I've own this long without root because of Android pay.....I saw a few options around the inner-webs but nothing seem 100% proof. If there is a 100% way of having root + android pay I'm in......
Unfortunately, it doesn't work on my device.
You can flash a stockish ROM and then unroot and Android Pay will work. I'm using [ROM]OP3Lite 2.2.1.
When you flash the ROM it will be rooted but just unroot using SuperSU and you get the benefit of the ROM
and you can use Android Pay.
Why do you want google to know all o your transaction history?
Whats the different between android pay and a contact-less enabled bank/credit card?
exactly...I really don't see the value in Android Pay when every bank/credit card has contactless/tap payment available. In the time you open the app and setup the payment on your phone, you can also take out your wallet...unless you're a girl and have a huge purse or something
Simply put, I have two pockets, one for my phone, one for my cigarettes. If I can use Android Pay, that's all I need. Without Android Pay I need to bring along wallet/cardholder with my cards.
I don't care if google knows my transaction history, because I'm not naive, they already know everything they want to know about me anyway... if they'd care.
Maybe there's a solution now! Check the new link

How is the state of the OnePlus 3T right now?

Hello, I've been an Android user from a while and decided to upgrade from my Nexus 5 to the OnePlus 3T. The only thing I'm concerned is not having the Google Android version since I'm very fond of how good it is, but in October 31st, Nexus 5 will be 4 years older and although Google isn't still talking of stop working on the software side of it it is probably going to happen eventually.
With all that said, I'm trying to learn beforehand (my phone arrives in 10 days) if are there any lag problems, if people are using any specific ROMs that work better with it and anything that could be quality of life improvements that I could do once it arrives.
Thank you

The Nexus 5 is already discontinued when it comes to official software updates. It will only get security patches and even that won't be for long. (In fact it's latest factory image is from December 2016 so it might've fully stopped already.)
As for the Oneplus 3T, it's currently running the latest 7.1.1, latest security patch and the Oneplus skin (OxygenOS) is basically stock Android on steroids. I'm running the fully stock beta 4 version and the phone is extremely fast and smooth, battery is great. It's good to the point where I haven't even felt the need to unlock the bootloader and root yet. You definitely won't be disappointed in your purchase.
I recently (last week) replaced my 2 year old Nexus 6 with a OnePlus 3T and had the same concerns as you. Would I enjoy another OEM's version of Android? I was even running a really bare bones Vanilla AOSP ROM by the end and loved it.
I don't regret changing at all thus far.
I'm on OxygenOS 4.1.1 with Franco Kernel and Magisk v12 and it's working beautifully! I figured I'm gonna run OOS for a while before seeing if there's any nice ROMs available. I've been looking around a little, but not many of the available ROMs seems worth it (I don't want CM, Lineage or anything pre-rooted).

Ah, that's so good to hear! This is exactly what I was expecting. Yeah, Nexus 5 had an extremely good run and until the beginning of this year I felt it was still so good as far apps go, but anything web related started being more and more painful. It is still a pretty good phone and I'll keep around for Android dev related things.
Now I'm pumped for the 13th.
Thanks

OOS is as close as you can get (factory OS) to "pure" Android unless you buy a Nexus or Pixel (and the latter will of course cost you). Many are calling the OP3T a spiritual successor of the Nexus series.
There are just a few OnePlus versions of apps (music player, file manager, weather) that many folks will find useless (you probably have your preferred options). And a OnePlus launcher.
But beyond that, there are a few modifications many will see as value added: The OnePlus camera app is really nice (great options in Manual mode). There are lots of settings which let you tweak and customize in (my opinion) really useful ways.

I flash Franco Kernel because I have great experiences with it from my Nexus 6. Ran without for a few days, but realised I missed it...
I install Magisk because I want root and for a few nice systemless modifications. Currently: changing screen density, debloating system apps and Viper4Android.

I see. I never used a launcher (except the Google Now, not sure if that is even considered a launcher itself, and hopefully it is a feature in every Android phone, not just Google ones), ideally, I think I would want to get rid of that, if possible. The File Manager might be helpful, although I use one I like, perhaps theirs is a good one. No biggie, though.

Google Now is a launcher (AKA home app). It's not pre-installed, but you can easily install it from the Play Store.
I don't think you can disable or uninstall the OnePlus launcher on a stock OP3T ("disable" is grayed out), but you certainly can with root (may want to freeze it before uninstalling, and make sure it doesn't break anything else). But I also doubt it would make any significant difference, compared to simply installing Google Now launcher, and making it the default home app.

Haven't used it much, it does the basic functions (move/copy files, looks like it can open archives like ZIP) but doesn't look like anything special. If you use one that has more features (particularly root browsing) you'll probably prefer what you already use.

Module That Gives In-Depth Privacy Customisation.

Hi all. Looking for a module that will give me some in-depth privacy customization. App-Ops doesn't give enough control and I can't install xPrivacy as I'm on Nougat.
Not sure if there is something similar to xPrivacy as a Magisk module.
Running Magisk 13, Android 7.0.
Any recommendations would be much appreciated.
I am also on the hunt.. Would a port be possible? I've seen other ports but systemless xprivacy may be a bit much to ask?
If it possible it will be one of the most important modules.
I think Xposed is died for newer Android OS than 6.0
If it's not otherwise possible without Xposed, it's not going to be possible with Magisk.
I see Xposed GitHub has an update last 8 months ago... Has anyone considered creating a bounty setup for a port to Nougat / O? This has worked quite well in the past for rooting difficult devices... Perhaps a community bounty for something bigger like xposed would receive a lot of donations and really get the ball moving!
Also I have heard that it is possible to install xposed on Nougat however the functionality is somewhat buggy / compromised... Any risky adventurous types want to test and report back?

Bounty for Xposed on Pie

I'm putting up a $1000 bounty right now for Xposed on Pie (have a Pixel 3) in the next 2 months.
If someone knows where I can deposit that in escrow, let me know. Otherwise it's here and sitting to be grabbed.
Don't know if it will help but it's a carrot on a stick to start
Awesome, I'm adding another 25 dollars

You know that the code for Xposed for Oreo has not been published right? Bounty is not going to change anything because no one will write Xposed for Pie from scratch. Nobody except rovo89 can do something about it unless he publishes the source code. It would be better to contact him, check if he is still on it and then donate to him directly.

He won't release the code, because the last time he did (for M), romracer and others built a half-assed version for N (which HELPED port all modules to N before the official release). He wants total control and this is not only meaning that Xposed is dead unless he returns full motivated, it also means that the latest releases sources are not available and who knows if rovo sold the mod to some malware deliver company (I believe and hope not, but this is just an scenario), which could use xposed as a malware rootkit (it has potential).
I mean, in the end, rovo has no time/motivation for this project and doesn't want to share it, so we're better off asuming it is dead forever.

@Pupet_Master is right imo! Only the "hardest" of the harcore users of android still want xposed.
People learned to live without it and the reality is that devs are losing interest in mantaining support for the "nevercoming" updates.
Dont get me wrong, I think that xposed gave kitkat, lollipop and marshmallow a much richer experience and performance, but after nougat, android itself started to implement thoose missing features so xposed started to be pointless, at least for me.

It is not about features. I could do without every module except xprivacylua. I won't ever use Android without it. We clould try to gather a huge bounty to get somebody create something from scratch.
I would also donate at least 150$.

I guess you do not have confidence in the apps that you have installed on your phone but yeah, maybe that's the most valid excuse for using xposed.

Sorry but i don't get the logic of that.
First, bounty will mean nothing if the modules devs already moved on. 2nd let's face it, bounty also means nothing of no one is in touch with the only person that can make it happen, Rovo.
Also, custom ROMs do almost everything that Xposed used to do now days. Not to mention that Xposed isn't perfect. It allow modules to expand the framework of android, how ever, it bog down the performance.
There is an app called Wakeblock that do everything that an Xposed module would do but is stand alone. I see the old devs from Xposed modules moving on to this sort of thing.
I still, to be honest, don't get the logic of need Xposed and never use android without it if you literary miss no module from it except one that any LOS ROM based already do by default.
Any news on Xposed Pie, I'm missing great modules like exi, edge etc. I think I should downgrade to oreo

I'm not going to donate that money as one poster posted, it's a bounty. Gets paid when someone does the job and claims it , but according to much more knowledgeable posters no source is available.
The only thing I miss is the gravity box tweaks. I'm rooted so any alternatives?

I have many xposed modules that I can hardly live without. Instant face unlock is the one I used the most.
There is one thing that is impossible with Magisk, to the best of my knowledge, that is critical for me: Setting device locale (language) on a per-app basis. No, changing it before launching and then switching back on close is not an option. No, setting multiple locales does nothing useful, pretty much no apps use this feature, and especially the ones I need it for do not.
And no, custom roms can't do that either, and Google has been ignoring numerous requests to do that for a decade, because they discriminate against multilingual people, since multilingual people are not a nationality, which apparently makes it okay.
Ed Xposed can be used on Pie.Although some modules have compatibility issues. Link: https://github.com/solohsu/EdXposed
magisk does not have xposed module ?

FIXED!

EDIT::
My initial issue has been solved! I did some tinkering around with the APN settings and finally got my data to work outside of being on a phone call!! I still have issues flashing different firmwares and os's but that problem will be addressed later down the line.
If you make another Question thread about the Flash issues, you can drop a link here. I might be able to help
oh! thank you! i was initially trying to flash the unlocked u1 firmware onto a t-mobile based note 8 because of mobile data & hotspot issues but i was able to fix it. i'm still interested in root & trying to get a custom os installed. reminiscing on the days of dirty unicorns on my note 2

Cool. My Note 8 isn't my main smartphone anymore, but I didn't like putting Custom ROMs on there, because I found I was missing Samsung's Camera App and all their other cool features.
Kinda weird, I like the smoothness and simplicity of pure Vanilla Android, but all the cool little features of Samsung's OneUI. When I still used my Note 8, I just sticked with OneUI but rooted it for some additional freedom. (and for Custom Fonts and Systemwide Adblocking.. and YouTube Vanced. LOL)

Just keep in mind Samsung phones have a physical security chip (Knox).
If you unlock the bootloader, that security chip will permanently show that your warranty is void (0x1). You also won't be able to use Samsung Pay, Samsung's Secure Folder anymore, and some other things which don't come into my mind right now...
Samsung Health too, for whatever reason. However for that app there's a tweak you can do in a system file called build.prop... lol
So, there are disadvantages you must be aware of.
There's also Google SafetyNet, which detects an unlocked bootloader & root. And it's been a cat & mouse game to mask/avoid this detection of an unlocked BL & Root from Google SafetyNet, and it sucks. Google and the manufacturers try their hardest to disincentivize users from using their phone in the way they like to.
I don't want to scare you away from making these adventures. It's just a bit rough at the moment for the Android Modding Community and I'm afraid it'll only get more locked up, until Android phones sorta become like iPhones (in terms of freedom).
Yeah, playing around with root and different roms would be fun but i've pretty much settled on how i have things set up with good lock and all of those features. i can't seem to get videos to work with lock+ tho, that option seems to be greyed out.
