Hey guys,
My phone is running terribly slow lately, but I mean it seems like it is starting to crawl. My nexus 5 was very speedy, then when I got the nexus ^ I noticed that is was slower than the nexus 5 accessing menus and opening applications which I believe was due to encryption. I disabled encryption on my Nexus 6 and used for a while but then you lose over the air updates, so it turn a pain to update the phone afterwards. I ended up getting back to encrypted Android, got the marshmallow update, the phone since then start to get slower and slower, now sometime when you want to create a new note on evernote, the keyboard take ages to show.
Camera app it the worst, crashing constantly, barely usable to say the least . When it doesn;t crash it struggles like hell, freezes and then makes the phone unresponsive for a while.
Is this all due to encryption?
The whole reason I like nexus devices is to have vanilla android, no bull**** that makes the phone slow like on my previous samsung phones (note 1 and 2).
What are my options here? I'm thinking about a factory reset, but then again the pain of setting up all accounts, setting up apps, etc... I'm quite disappointed with the N6 at the moment, and would not even think about the N6P, anotehr device fully encrypted that is not that much different in the end considering I also paid full retail price on the N6 when it was released in the UK.
What do you guys think I could do?
Cheers!

no. its either due to your nexus 6 having issues hardware-wise or due to a terrible set up. my n6 is still encrypted and is probably the fastest n6 out there. yes, you can try a factory reset. that might be of help to your device. and a factory reset isnt a pain. when i factory reset, i log in and google restores all my settings, my wallpaper, and my apps. no hastle at all.

Ok, I'm going to do that. The pain is 3rd party apps login info and accounts for example.

ahh, lol. thats not a real pain to me, so i have to log in to that app one time..
It's definitely not due to encryption. I ran unencrypted for a while, then accidentally encrypted after flashing a new stock ROM (duh...) and stuck with it for a while, then went back to unencrypted, then after my wife had her unencrypted phone stolen with all her stuff unprotected I decided that encryption is probably a safer more secure option, so I deliberately pressed the "Encrypt" button again.
I therefore have a pretty clear experience of the N6 in both states. There is no difference. Benchmarks may pick up milliseconds here and there, and say that unencrypted is 10% faster than encrypted, but in normal usage...? No difference at all, battery or performance.
I'm not trying to necro-post this, but I still have, and painfully had, the same issue with the Camera nowadays.
It was heavy and painful duiring my two weeks leave in July: I can't take photos, and when I took some of them in HDR+, while it was processing them, the phone was hanging, camera app crashing, phone unresponsive, photos lost due to camera app crashing or android crash and reboot, and when it wasn't Android, the phone was stuck and unresponsive and I just had to force shut it down.
Now, I hope these things will go away with Nougat, but the fear is still there and I always thought it was because of the Encryption.
Curious if anyone has figured this out yet. I have tried stock 6 and 7, Cyanogenmod 13 and 14 and turned encryption on and off. The phone always works well after a restart but starts lagging after a few weeks. Up and down scrolling, camera, app opening and closing etc. Restarting the phone seems to fix it for a few hours but it always comes back.
This is supposed to be a top of the line device. The hardware spec is still relevant today, why does it run like a dog after a while? I was thinking memory leak but there always seems to be enough left.
I have a N6 purchased Dec 2015 new from Amazon. The only mods, if you can call it that is, I have unlocked the boot loader. I am currently running N6F26Y sideloaded via ADB.
The phone was great when I first got it but now after about a day or so of usage it becomes slow and sluggish and unresponsive I have to restart it to use it. I have done a factory reset a couple of times which gets it back to normal for a week or so and then the problem recurs. Occasionally I will delete the cache which also helps. Snapchat is one of the worse apps - crashes the phone regularly and is a very slow app.
Also the camera can get very slow often taking seconds to take one photo.
I love the phone but it's becoming unusable now. The contrast between this and a new phone (I have purchased a Moto Z) is like night and day. The Moto Z runs instantly, has no lag and is a nice phone. But what I like about the N6 is the large screen which makes it great for videos etc.
Short of perhaps flashing some custom ROM is there anything I could be doing?
I'd recommend flashing a rom like pure nexus, super stable that should fix your problem, otherwise you've done all you can and is the easiest fix

Hello,
It seems like some apps are really slowing down your phone. I use my N6 at home for web browsing mostly as I have a Pixel XL now. Just like you I love the screen size.
The camera has always been slow fore, because of the time it takes to focus...
Did you try using your phone a few days without Snapchat installed? Maybe you also have other misbehaving apps installed.
Uninstall Snapchat and other apps and start from here. Reinstall one per one with a few days interval. See if the issue still occurs.
Installing a custom ROM + kernel will likely speed up things a little bit. I second @Dugaldrob with Pure Nexus and I'd suggest ElementalX kernel on top. Running this combo on N6, N6P and Pixel XL and they work flawlessly.
I don't believe installing a custom ROM alone will fix your issue though. Stock ROM shouldn't cause the phone to slow down to the point you need to reboot to use it.
Finding the culprit will...
Good luck...

First step is to remove Snapchat. I rarely use the app and only because my daughter sends stuff on it. I am going to tell her to send me stuff via another method
If that doesn't work then it's a new ROM. I have performed ROM installs before but have never flashed a new kernel on a phone before so that will be a new experience. Hopefully I won't brick the phone

Hello,
Don't worry, it's really easy. Also, if you are lost, there must be a ton of tutorials in general section. If you are lost yet, just ask and someone will point you in the right direction...

I've been running Pure Nexus and wanted to let peeps know I put Nitrogen on and man it's so smooth, my wifi tether is back and I went to sleep last night with 50% battery still. When I installed it I opted for the nano gapps I think so like 175mb for minimal apps and maybe that's why it's running so efficient. Maybe I could have re-installed Pure Nexus with a clean install and it would have gotten better but it was a good time to try something else. Also when Nitrogen got an update I was notified just like stock and it downloaded. I didn't even know these could do that. Anyways give it a try and you might just switch back. I was looking into new phones but if it keeps working so smooth with battery longer than a day then I'm fine for now.
Snap chat is not that big of an issue. What I have found to cause the device to slow down is normally almost full device storage and a crappy cache release code in apps. Some apps don't release their cache properly. So it causes lag. This is why a reboot seems to fix it.
While a custom rom may fix this issue it is not the solution. The proper solution is to find what is causing it and fix/repair/ditch it.
Worst offenders for crappy code in my thoughts. Other will disagree with one on this list I am sure. So don't bother. I know people swear by it. It runs like crap for me at times and causes my whole device to lag until I close it out.
1 Facebook
2 FB messenger
3 Google Chrome ( don't do it lol)
4 whatsapp
5 Hangouts
Mind you this is just a list on my usage. It may very per user and even device (considering different hardware)

I can confirm this, because I've removed these apps (-whatsapp) and also decrypted the data partition...
My N6 is fast.
Maybe a lite stock ROM and an other kernel is a good start.

Currently I have FB, FB messenger, and Chrome but when I installed gapps I chose a super lite install so tons of bloat and google apps were not installed and my battery has gone way up and it's so smooth. I'm sure even when we don't use apps they're always doing something in the background. I bet you're right and a stock lite ROM would be good too with the minimal bs apps.

Thanks for the advice. Of the list of apps above I have only Chrome and Hangouts. I really can't see replacing either of them.
I also should have pointed out that the phone locks up randomly requiring a hard reset. I wonder if an errant app could cause that or I have some RAM problem. Certainly on a PC bad RAM can use in Windows a blue screen or something but perhaps Android isn't so forgiving?

I would flash TWRP, flash supersu in TWRP to root, make a complete backup in twrp, then remove whatever Google apps you're not using with a system app removal app. Getting some of that bloat off the device should help. If it's still laggy, then look into a custom ROM. I run Tesla on my Nexus 6 with none of the issues you're having. I don't decrypt it either
Running abdroid 7.1 here. I dont get any slowdowns, at leas until the battery doesnt drop below 50 and 25 percent.
Im running a custom kernel and my phone is rooted. Everything else is stock.
Can you flash a custom kernel and presumably TWRP without wiping the phone? If so then might try that before a custom ROM

Hello,
Since your bootloader is unlocked, flash TWRP and install the kernel, no problem.
Might give you a slight boost at first sight, but your device will likely slow down over time anyway...
Cheers...
I'm on 7.0 with the April SP. I have dozens of apps installed, including Hangouts. I use Firefox for browsing, I like it better than chrome (and you can install an ad blocker).
My camera slows down when the battery is under 40%, and the whole device slows dramatically, though not unusable, at or below 5%. But otherwise, no issues what so ever.
One solution that I have not seen suggested here is resetting the device and NOT taking the Google account backup of all your apps. I would suggest making a completely clean install of the factory rom you have and installing one or two apps at a time, most important to you first. And do this for a few days/weeks until you find the app that's misbehaving.
Although there are general bad players out there, this bad app could be unique to your device. Just because all devices of the same model have the same specs and components, doesn't mean that there isn't variability in parts quality.
I would do this before trying any new roms or kernels. Find the true problem first.
Good luck!
edit:
I had another idea: Go into your battery stats and network stats and storage stats and see if any app seems to be using too much of any, or all of the 3. This may get you the answer more quickly.
Not happy with the performance of the P8Lite - scrolling is jumpy and often freezes for a few seconds. Facebook app definitely makes it worse, but even after removing that, the phone is still really slow. Has anyone else noticed this, and is there a solution? I expected better performance with the specs that the phone has.

Secure all apps and settings with the internal backup app.
If your phone is not rooted, do a factoryreset. Then everything should be fine.
This phone truly sucks right now. If anyone hasn't bought their phone yet pony up a few more quid and get the Xiaomi A1. It kills this, even just playing with the two at the store you will notice the difference.
Im gonna keep this and wait for the new lineage. In the mean time factory reset still did very little for my insane lag on B182 update. I have a GPS watch and LastPass going in the background so maybe I'm a bit too much of a power user for this budget/mid phone but the ONLY thing I've found that has made it slightly more bearable is to goto DEVELOPER options and shut off ALL animations. You'll probably get a 30-40 percent speed boost on your lag.
This phone run perfectly.
My P8 has become slow over the time. Swiftkey starts to be laggy during keypressed, fingerprint unlock sometimes dosnt work and i have to wake the phone pressing the power button, scrolling has laggy peaks.
But making a backup with HiSuite and doing a factory reset gave me back the snappy phone i had.
So, i think we just need a factory reset over few month to maintain the phone snappy as he is,
I had to play with Huawei's optimizer app but my phone runs really smooth. (I have small lags/crashes but it's very rare)

Same problem here. This phone becomes slow after a couple of days of uptime. Another issue I have is that it also freezes when toggling between portrait and landscape display. Rebooting the phone helps a bit, but the problem kicks back in after 1 or two days...
p8 Lite 2017
I got my Huawei p8 lite 2017 over a month ago. It was fine for the first few days but has become very slow. Last night I had to make a phone call at the airport. The phone app didn't even respond quick enough. I selected the person to phone and waited over a minute for the app to make the call because it was lagging.
Other than that:
- As a developer, my apps run fine when debugging.
- Music streams fine.
- Chrome runs fine.
- Youtube runs fine.
- Camera lags too much for quick photos. When opening the camera app, it freezes for about 30 seconds before it becomes usable.
- Rotation lags and you can see how the screen redraws.
- WhatsApp lags allot.
For a modern phone, this surely is a step in the wrong direction.
Cheers.
I have the same problem with mine. Barely 2 months old. It worked great until the last couple of weeks.
Now pretty much any scroll or swipe action results in the phone freezing, a transparent copy of the screen at the point of touching remaining, while the actual page underneath scrolls 'normally'.
These can last a couple of seconds or minutes. Then, you try doing something and it happens again. It does this in any app, homescreen, settings etc.
At times it is almost like screen tear as well.
RAM manager says I have always got 1gb+ remaining. I rebooted, it did nothing. Uninstalled some newer apps I'd got, did nothing. I backed up the phone and factory reset it..... It worked..... For about an hour or two, then it started up again.
Screenshots do not capture it either like I hoped it would.

One week on 12 with Magisk root and all was fine until yesterday. Phone boots for about 1 1/2 minuets, and freezes. The touchscreen does not respond to input and buttons do not work as well. The phone restart in about a minuet or so. but it's goes straight to the Google bypassing a the bootloader in unlocked, press to pause screen. Restarting the phone in safe mode the phone works fine. I assume it's a rouge app but I don;t know which one.
Anyone else have this issue? Anyway to locate what app is crashing the phone. I did a Malwarebytes scan that took forever because of the rebooting and it did find and remove a "threat" however that did not fix things.
I don;'t want to reset this phone again unless it is the only solution.
Thanks in advance.

If you already found malware... there may be more.
Reload and be careful what you install and download.
I've gone for over a year with Malwarebytes not finding anything... that should be a red flag for you. Clean your act up.
Mind you I do go to some nasty sites... but I'm very careful what I install and download. I'm running a N10+/Pie variant.

Agreed. Constant firmware upgrades are generally counterproductive especially if the device is fulfilling its mission.
Even Adroid 9 is secure enough to use with no issues.
Lol, you probably should have stopped with Android 10 if possible That's as high as my N10+'s will ever go. Scoped storage was poorly implemented and it seems not needed. Android is suppose to be the alternative to iPhone, not an inferior copycat
Guess Google didn't get the memo...

I know, I have no idea why I switched to 12. I figured the latest and greatest but that is not true at least not yet for the ones like me who need root. That's my fear as well as the complete mess they're making getting there. My office app is free and not compatible with scoped storage.
One of the reasons I now have 2 N10+'s is zero confidence in Google Android's immediate future or direction. Google gotten too big for its breeches and needs to be cut down to size.
UPDATE:
Wiped the phone and set it up with a fresh install of 12. After some issues I got it to boot on Friday. I rooted and all wall well until last night when the same thing started to happen. with constant reboots after a few minuets After thinking about what could be causing this I remembered that although installed via backup/restore I opened the app Greenify and gave it root privileges yesterday afternoon. I uninstalled the Greenify app and the phone is back to normal, at least for now. I don't know what it is doing but I assume Greenify is hibernating a vital system app that is causing the phone to freeze and reboot.

Greenify and 3rd party launcher were the 2 apps that I removed after 2 back to back boot loops over 1.5 years ago.
I suspect it was the launcher but Greenify was also a prime suspect. Ditched both, the last load remains fast and stable to this day.

I've used Nova launcher with no issues. It was Hyperion I had loaded... paid version. It was glitchy. I'm running stock; Greenify didn't have as much leeway as it did your load did.
Don't know which caused it, not doing another reload to find out. It was one or both together.
I just stick with the stock One UI now as it's the best overall launcher for my N10+...

Hi everyone. I just got my OnePlus 10 Pro and ever since I had it it's been running very warm when using I checked a few apps and they all showed that the battery was running at 42° Celsius which is keeping the device warm basically all the time when I'm using it. is anyone else having this problem? This is really concerning for me.
I'm unable to update to the latest version of the formula that's available because OnePlus seems like they don't release full ROMs for the OnePlus 10. What's up with that?

It's burning up the battery too. I'm familiar with Samsung's and this is a common problem with them. The solution is to optimize the phone unless it's a purely firmware or hardware issue.
Turn off global power management.
Find the power hogs and deal with each on a case by case basis. Either by changing settings or disabling/uninstalling them or by using work arounds.
Keep trash social media apps like FB, WhatsApp, etc off the phone. Cloud storage tend to be a battery sucker, one reason I use SD cards instead.
Try using factory loaded app versions, update one at a time if at all and see what results.
Once you get it optimized I would avoid app and especially firmware updates/upgrades. These can and do break things. In your case a firmware update may correct issues on your variant so consider wisely and don't update blindly.
Anything from Pie up is relatively secure in actual use... useless you do something stupid. Security even using Pie simply isn't an issue. Updates have cost me far more time then any malware to fix. In the last 2 years no malware repairs or factory resets on this stock N10+ running on Pie.
Mine get extreme warm too, specially when its charging.
I've also noticed some heat when Warp Charging!
