Google Assistant Doesn't Work When Screen Is Off? - Xiaomi Mi A2 / 6X Questions & Answers

Hello! I recently got the Mi A2, and I've loved it so far (except for issues with upgrading to 9 from 8.1.0, and not being able to flash back) and I decided to try out the Google assistant for the first time, it works fine when my phone is unlocked, it does everything, but when my phone screen is off it doesn't work? It'll listen when I turn the screen on and it's still locked, but if I have to grab my phone to turn the screen on it defeats the purpose of a voice activated assistant. Is this an issue with android pie, or is my phone just broken?

The Mi A2 is not able to do this, it's a hardware limitation.

Help Getting Smart Lock to Work

Has anyone got Smart Lock working on their Mi8?
When I pair new bluetooth devices, the stock Android Smart Lock notification comes up, offering to keep my device unlocked, and I can follow it through and confirm.
But then the phone actually ignores that, and continues to ask for a pin or fingerprint, even in situations where Smart Lock should be working.
Anyone any ideas on how to fix this? I've check that Smart Lock is switched on as a Trust Agent already, not sure what else to do
Not entirely sure but i read somewhere that smart Lock only works with xiaomi products.

Camera turns on during calls

Hello guys,
i hope theres not already a thread on this topic as i searched for one but didn't find one.
My Mi 9 always turns the camera on whenever I'm calling someone. I mean always. And several times per call, about once a minute i guess. I always have to turn my display off with the power button when it happens but somehow the camera opens again after some time.
My AI Button is completely turned off so that's not the problem.
Any guesses? It's really annoying.

So just to get started, is everything stock, latest firmware (PFAEUXM or PFAMIXM), root or no root, GCam of any sort installed? Standard Xiaomi caller? Standard mobile phone call or Whatsapp, FB Messenger or the likes? You know, just a little more info. What have you tried yourself?

Check out if it happens during calls using speaker, headset or bluetooth not holding the phone to your ear or not holding your phone at all.
My Mi A1 has the same problem, but it turns on the flashlight. It happens on both first and third party caller apps.

Everything is stock despite POCO Launcher. No root, Firmware is QFAEUXM, GCam installed but the stock camera is the problem. Standard Xiaomi Caller and standard mobile phone call. Can't tell if it happens on Whatsapp or FB Messenger because i never use these as phone.
I only tried unbinding the AI button because the camera was binded to it.

It happens during normal calls without speaker, headset or bluetooth while holding the phone to my ear.
EDIT: I just remembered that the camera sometimes opens randomly while i use the phone but that's really rare.

In this case then, remove the POCO launcher and see if the problem goes away. Next thing if this doesn't help is to remove the Gcam. I strongly suspect the combination of the non-standard launcher and the non-standard camera. Even if it is the Xiaomi camera that starts the problem can still be the Gcam as with such non-standard ports they may cause all kinds of problems. I have used it myself and had to remove it.
I have the same problem. I have found that it is connected with AI button. You have to unbind anything related this button. I have no problem with camera app since then.
Looks like Xiaomi needs to check what is triggering AI button actions.
I have the same problem. I havent nothing on the phone - only stock firmware and software. Camera activate durign normal call, sometimes camera activating when phone is laying on the desk and someone talking near desk. When i have end call - i cant turn off call because it is in background and my galery have abotu 5-9 new photo taking from my ear :/
Same experience here. Miui 12.0.1 global. QFAMIXM. it was the same on miui 11. It turns on during calls and sometimes when laying on the desk or in the car. Is there a solution yet ? I unbound all the camera shortcuts/buttons but nothing changed.

Try to disable the AI Button. This should Help.

Camera and google assistant start with no reason
Latest Firmware installed, stock camera, stock caller
Same thing here, happens also with google assistant (while being disabled in google and normal settings, not mapped to the AI button), both camera and google assistant pop up during phone calls, switching back and forth every 3-4 seconds, also happens when i get bad service to the point where the whole phone is unusable. Does anyone have an idea if xiaomi or someone else could fix this? Hoping to find an answer to this problem soon.
Best regards, Max
Disable voice assistance under Apps -->Apps-->(three dots button ) --> Default Apps --> Voice assistance --> none
This is unfortunately hardware problem. I had the same issue (with AI and also later with volume).
When the phone changed its temperature (f.ex. during the call or in car in front of the AC vent) it's starting the "show".
Warranty service should help

Zero issues on my Pixel 4 or 4 XL. I've never had issues. Might be hardware

I have the Pixel 4 XL and it's been working fine until I had to get it replaced because of the 50% battery issue. The replacement phone the face lock setup doesn't work. I've loved the phone so far and was really considering getting the Pixel 6 when it comes out. But these two issues so close together have made me begin to question. I'll never buy another Samsung, so I guess that leaves Apple.
Mine just started doing this after a factory reset. It was driving me crazy. I was able to finally get it to work. Before it gets to the point of scanning your face there will be a place you can click on asking if you have trouble moving your head. Once you click that it will still say the same thing about fitting your face but you will not have to move your head around. Just keep moving your phone in and out and it will eventually take when it finds the sweet spot. I haven't had any issues using face unlock after setting it up.
Had the same problem and apparently it was because of my screen protector. If you have one on, try removing it and test
Solved this problem!
Bakstory: I have Pixel 4XL not locked on carrier's network. I was running Andorid 11 (build from Jun 2021) since the moment I've bought the phone and I have never updated it to the newest versions of Andorid till this days, cause I've read that many Pixel users expirenced problems after update (like not working wireless charging and problems with Face Unlock). Last few month I've noticed that Face Unlock recognized me with 50% chance, I've experinced it earlier and usually I was able to fix it by deletting the face and setting up Face Unlock once more. This time it did not work. I've deleted the face data and was not ale to set it up once more. It was saying "fit your face in inner frame", It was detecting my face, cause it was reacting when I was turning the head and it was sayin "turn your head less" or was reacting when I was moving away from phone by saying "move closer". I've also upgraded to Andoid 13 from push update and problem was not resolved.
Solution: I've rolled back to Andorid 10 (build QD1A.190821.011.C4, Oct 2019), before installing back up your files, cause during the process you will basically reset your phone to factory settings. And on Android 10 Face Unlocked works like charm! It succesfully set up and worked. After that I've upgarded to Android 13 from push update and Face Unlock still works! BUT, DO NOT TRY TO DELETE FACE DATA AFTER ANDROID UPDATE,IN MY CASE IT WOULD NOT SET UP BACK, I HAD TO ROLL BACK TO Andorid 10 TO SET UP FACE.
I had screen protector and the mentioned above problem is not because of it, because I was trying to set up Face Unlock without screen protector for 3 hours straight. I've even downloaded HedgeCam2 to check how Infrared Camera works with it and without it, no difference.
That's definetly software problem, not hardware, greetings to Google Developers
Sorry for grammar mistakes, English is not my primary language. I hope you understood me and I've managed to describe my problem and how I solved it.

Question Can anybody else access assistant from standby? *video*

Yes, i've always been able to do it, from my Redmi 5 plus to my last phone, Redmi Note 9 pro..even my GF can do it on her Mi 9.
I think it's a problem with Android 11, but can't be sure unless i get feedback from other users...I've tried all google setting (including the personalisation by ticking all boxes) tried everything in MIUI to no avail...it's a brilliant feature as i used to be able to just ask the time in bed/set an alarm etc without having to wake the screen...especially useful if you can't find your phone, just say 'ok google' and you can usually hear it!
Whenever i try it on my RN 10 pro, my RN9 Pro chirps up instead acting on behalf of it's much thicker bigger brother.

I always thought it was for security reasons one cannot do so
maybe 'trust' can work. check with headphones after approving as trusted device

Do you mean it's not accessible on your device?
I've used my headphones in the past but that was just part of it being open normally.i.e it shouldn't matter as i don't always have my headphones connected for it to work.
As i stated it can't be for security reasons as i've had this feature on previous Xiaomi phones (and my GFs phones as well) it's just the RN 10 pro...i'm wondering if it's because of Android 11?

Question WearOS (GW5) and Mi 11 Ultra (China Rom) Oddysey

Glad to be back to XDA after all this years. I just want to put this thread because of the difficulties I have with my Mi 11 Ultra (China Rom) and what I've surpassed and not. I'm loving this phone and I have almost everything working or with some workarounds and now that I have everything installled and functional don't want to reeinstall everything.
This is the problems I current have:
WearOS - bought a new GW5 LTE had a hole afternoon to setup the watch and pair but now it's working. The problem is I can't add a card to google wallet on wearOS. I press the + sign and show the loading circle and comes back to add a card. Simply won't communicate with the phone to insert the cvv. I tried with my old Mi 9 and paired flawless. I have all google services but seems something missing to wake up the watch app to validate de CVV.
This is my major problem right now.
I've surpassed:
- Add google pay to the phone and is working
- Pairing GW5 and having ECG and BP
I still have two more anoying problems:
- Screen cast simply isn't working and I think is because rear screen
- Nova launcher after restarts don't come app with last open apps WORKAROUND: is to turn on and off rear screen pass to default launcher and the returning default to Nova, works untill you restart again.
- the behaviour is strange because when it happens rear screen turns on and shouws recent apps even if you had it deactivateded.
If you have any problem that I can help that I passed I will be glad to help and if anyone can help me trying something to add a card to Gpay please help because I dind't want to Install and configure everything again and have manual updates.
