Moto X 2nd Gen Fingerprint - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was just wondering if anyone ever thought if it is possible to install/hardwire a fingerprint scanner in the place of Motorola's Logo. It seems just made for it. Not an expert in microsoldering neither in software developement but I've seen people adding wireless charging pads to their phones... Maybe it isn't so impossible.

Ok, let's build your own theme park, with blackjack and hookers.
PS: For why?

Why would you wanna do such a thing though ?it already has one, and back of the phone is the worst place you can think about placing a print scanner.

So is it confirmed that the nexus 6 doesnt have a fingerprint scanner?

Thats my only deal breaker.
That is correct, there is no fingerprint scanner. I must ask though, why is that a deal breaker? Seems like such a trivial thing when the rest of the phone is absolutely top notch.
I hate fingerprint sensors so I'm glad it doesn't have one.
Not a deal breaker for me, but I am certainly disappointed. I was hoping for a fingerprint sensor for lastpass, and to make 2-factor authentication simpler.
The fingerprint sensors on Android phones are kind of junk right now (compared to the one on the iPhone. Every once in awhile Apple does something amazing!), so I'd rather wait until there's actually a good one, but still... I was hoping.

I don't want my fingerprint data used for anything in terms of mobile because its possible to compromise it. You can't replace your fingerprints like you can a password, and just because no one has taken your data yet, it doesn't mean they won't in the future. Anything is hackable these days so I'd rather not have a person obtain my fingerprint coupled with my card data and information.

Well part of the reason being what you mentioned "Touch ID", it is great. Now I also own a samsung galaxy tab s and all I use is the fingerprint scanner to unlock it and Im actually used to it now. So for my next android device thats a must for me now, which is why I'm now leaning towards the Note 4

I'm not sure how Samsung stores your prints, but I know that the iPhone doesn't actually store any type of usable image. From apple.com- "Touch ID doesn't store any images of your fingerprint. It stores only a mathematical representation of your fingerprint. It isn't possible for your actual fingerprint image to be reverse-engineered from this mathematical representation." The data is also encrypted and stored locally in a secured place on the A7 chip. Someone would actually need physical access to your phone to even attempt to get the data and even if they somehow managed to pull it off, it is still encrypted and still not an actual image. So even if Apple is wrong and it is possible to reverse-engineer your prints, it would be a colossal undertaking to end up with a usable print and you would have to be someone real important for someone else to be willing to go to those lengths to do it. That said, and please don't take this the wrong way, I think your fears might be slightly irrational, at least as it applies to fingerprint scanners in general.

Don't get me wrong, I love having it on my iPhone 6 but the way Samsung implemented it isn't as reliable or convenient. I would love to have one on the Nexus 6, but it certainly isn't important enough to make me even consider buying a Samsung phone. The Note 4 is pretty slick, but it is locked down super tight, and I'm one of those people that absolutely can't stand TouchWiz.
Anything can be reverse engineered (remember the enigma machine) and I don't trust apple because they don't post source code so ego knows what actually happening

I'm not saying it can't be reverse-engineered, but the time and resources needed to do it would far exceed the value of the print. And even so, with the fact that the would be hacker would need to be in physical possession of the device to do it- wouldn't it make more sense to just lift the prints the old fashioned way off the phone itself?
who cares about fingerprint scanner anymore, now with android L we have the ability to use a smart devices(watch) to unlock our phones!!!

I think I gotta correct you on the reliable part, I use it daily and its just as reliable as the iphone's but I rather stay away from comparisons. Maybe I just have good prints :0. All I'm saying is I'd rather have an android device with that kind of security convenience than the type I'm using today, zilch. I have a wide open device, no lock code. I just hate having to enter a pin or swipe to unlock.
As for the locked down part, I'm not sure what you mean but Tmobiles is already rooted and unlocked. They got some roms and kernels already I believe. Touchwiz isnt my favorite but has improved a bit, and I cant stand plain vanilla just bores me after a while. Then again to each his own and thats why android rocks

Me personally am not wearing a watch, let alone a smart watch lol.
Your Google password can be reverse engineered and cracked a million times easier than a mathematical representation of your fingerprint. Think of the fingerprint as a 10000 character long completely random password and you'll have some idea of how hard it will be to exploit.
TouchID is the best thing ever. Samsung's fingerprint scanner also works well. Biometric security should be on every phone, its much more secure and reliable, not to mention easier to use.

[Q] Wanting to see if anyone else would like to complain to Motorola

I first wanted to see if anyone else was annoyed with this phone as I am. If that was the case, then I wanted to have a mass complaint to Motorola because I honestly feel cheated by this phone. Since upgrading to 5.0 I really feel like this phone has just been incomplete. The software has been so buggy that I have found myself hating my phone, something I have never experience with an Android phone ever. I would have liked to have sold this phone and gone with something else, but I happened to drop it soon after getting it and I fell like nobody would buy it with the cosmetic damage done to it. My complaints honestly deal with just 5.0 in general and the memory leak issue, but I feel like Motorola should have done something about it much sooner. Considering the 5.0 update has been out for quite a few months now and my phone is the slowest and laggiest phone I have used since the OG Droid.
Does anybody else feel this strongly about this? I have the XT1096 by the way (Verizon model). I paid like 600$ for an incomplete phone. The hardware is great, albeit a small battery, but the software has been so terrible to me.
No complaints here
Sent from my XT1095 using XDA Free mobile app
Yeah no complaints here. Wipe your phone.
There is other threads dedicated to the memory leak issue, you guys aren't experiencing it?
Man the 5.0 update bugs is not moto's fault it is google's they rushed with its release the 5.0 deteriorates performance on all phones

I love blaming Google for stuff just as much as the next guy, but I'm having far more trouble on my Moto X. I used 5.0 on my Nexus 5 for a couple weeks before I got my Moto X and the only real issue I had was battery life. On my Moto X I am getting frequent issues with apps force closing (including built-in apps), data connection issues, bluetooth problems, etc... And yes, I performed a factory reset and saw the same issues with a "clean" phone.
I'm having none of these issues. The only problem I am having is Smart Lock not working, but I am about 99% sure it is because my firm's AirWatch policies are overriding my Smart Lock settings and preventing it from remaining unlocked while connected to my home WiFi. I occasionally have the problem where when someone calls, my phone vibrates like someone is calling, but it does not show up on the display or give me the option to answer until I lock my phone. I've narrowed this down to only happening in my apartment, so I again think this is related to AirWatch vs Smart Lock conflicts. No other problems on my end; I'm happy I purchased this phone (used, pure edition, for only $340 instead of full price). And I hated the Moto X 2013, so I'm definitely not a fanboy or anything.

Yup. But I was annoyed at the orig. Moto X as well. Moto makes great hardware (why I'm a fan), but their software has always sucked. It took until 4.4.4 for them to get all of their advertised features to work properly on the orig X.
IIRC, the new Moto X was flawless on 4.4.4. It was a mistake to update to 5.0, but I did it anyway (my bad). Missing Attentive Display (a main reason I bought the new model). Moto Voice can't be heard on BT, and numerous nagging little issues.
I assume they will get it right on the 2014 model on lollipop, most likely several months before the next new model ships, if the original Moto X timeline is any indicator.
IMHO, less attention to detail is the part of the price of admission to Android, but it has yet to become so inconvenient as to consider going back to iOS.

I'm annoyed with the phone, but for very different reasons than you are. I've got a short list:
The feel is very slippery, and like you, I've dropped my phone several times as a result. I also now have chipped glass at the corner. Yes, I could put a case on it. But... why customize, then cover it? Why buy a thin phone, then have it be thicker? I've come to find out now that the original black back is nice and grippy, but the colored backs are slippery as a... yeah, those are the words.
One flagship to rule them all. I'd love to see a smaller version of this phone. I know the Moto G exists, I know the Moto E exists. Obviously neither of those fit the bill based on the lack of an AMOLED screen.
Repeat Notifications on Moto Display. Repeat Notifications on Moto Display. Repeat....
Unlocking from Moto Display gives the lock screen. Bogus.
It's not a long list, and it is one that Moto could take care of fairly easily with some good customer service (exchanging slippery backs for grippy ones, even if you are past your return date), and a few software fixes. I don't know that the one flagship issue is fixable, or at least not easily. I don't *really* expect Moto to put all the latest and greatest features into a non-flagship style phone, I just wish they would.
I haven't really seen a memory leak problem, but I haven't done a whole lot of research. I'm a 17 year veteran of the IT trenches, and while rebooting isn't a 'fix' -- it damn well gets rid of a lot of problems. When my phone gets slow, I reboot. Takes about 30 seconds. ;; shrug ;; Maybe that doesn't help with the memory issue, but as I haven't run into it, maybe it does. Should it be necessary? No. Definitely not. Is it something I can live with? Definitely.
Regarding the software problems, however I will say (and I'm guessing it won't get me lots of compliments) that the 'WHERE IS MY UPGRADE' faction does have something to do with why we often see buggy software. The phone was pretty great on KitKat, and while I do love some of the features of Lollipop, I am not sure that getting the upgrade in such a hurry was worth the bugs listed above.
I don't want to see manufacturers using "bugs" as an excuse for delaying software upgrades excessively (like coming out with the KitKat upgrade now, after Lollipop is released, yuck) but I would like to see upgrades held until problems can be fixed, while being 100% open and honest about what is delaying things. I'd love to see specific dialogs, such as "We've noticed a huge memory leak issue in Lollipop with our custom software, so we're going to sort that out first before releasing the upgrade."
For those whom an upgrade is important, I would love to see a larger scale, opt-in, beta testing opportunity where someone could actually visit a webpage or app, sign off on the fact that they know that they could lose connectivity, battery life, features, convenience, etc --- and then has access to download the latest and greatest update. Users who want the upgrades then, could have them... but without the 'right' to complain overly much if problems did arise.
Just my thoughts. Let the dispute of the validity thereof now begin.

I do: Nova Launcher keeps restarting after one or two days of phone uptime. Happens with Tasker too (but not so often than launcher to be honest).
It's easy to detect since going back to home screen leads to full screen redraw.
By using a task manager (like 3C Toolbox) one can check the "Time since start" of Nova process when the last restart happened (when set up as default, a launcher it should never restart).
Rebooting the phone solve the problem for a moment then it gets back again

Yeah, I had the carbon fiber one on my original 2nd gen Moto X; still slipped out of my hand often enough to chip the glass. It's funny, because the instant I described the slippery problem, Motorola offered a no-charge replacement (but only of the same exact design)

Which Moto finally, after about 5+ hours of phone calls, numerous long chats, and various e-mail exchanges... stated clearly to me as well. Prior to that, they were swearing up and down that the soft touch was ONLY available from AT&T and Verizon, as well as regional carriers.
I tried the blue leather since they were stating that the black was plastic resin (rather than the soft touch). It was actually really smooth as well, at least to me.
After 6 total exchanges, I've got a black soft-touch back Moto X on the way from the factory. We'll see if that does the trick. If not, I'll end up downgrading to the Moto G.. or now that I've discovered the Agent app.. perhaps the Galaxy S4 Google Play edition with the Agent app and Peek/ACDisplay/Ambient Display.

Samsung's radios/antennas on the S4 are absolutely horrible. They are as bad as the GNex and Note3.

I know this is about the backs and their feel but i have found that whule the navy blue is smooth and hard just like most of the rest with a hula case (aka bumper around it) slippage is minimized
While I don't think I'm quite as upset over the phone as you are I do agree that I am disappointed with 5.0 and can't believe it has taken this long for a bugfix. When my Moto X 2013 started to die I wanted another one but Moto couldn't replace it (32 meg units just weren't available) so they "upgraded" me to a 2014. Now keep in mind I loved the 2013, best phone I had ever had. Completely stock and no complaints. Then along comes the 2014 and 5.0. Not major issues just a bunch of minor issues that keep me from loving this phone. I guess I'd be happy to sign on to a complaint petition but then I'd be wondering if I should be yelling at Moto or Verizon?

Coming back to my Ghost (XT1053)... need help!

Hello everyone,
I jumped to a blackberry priv in 2016 due to the physical keyboard, but i find myself gravitating back to my sexy ghost.
Now when i left, we had some solid custom roms, but none had managed to utilize the "wave" properly. I am sincerely hoping we have made it past that point.
I purchased a second XT1053 so i could have spare parts... my original X was used extensively, and it shows... the new phone was used by a senior, is in perfect condition but doesnt have the proper aesthetics.
The plan is to cannibalize the new purchased phone for its parts to restore some life into my old phone.
Things i plan to swap
Back cover
Buttons
Headphone jack
Battery
Back cover
So aside from those, im wondering if XDA would see merit in taking some of the other parts, say ram/mobo/snapdragon, etc. Typically, i do all this type of work myself, but this time im going to do it at a shop who gives me a full year warranty on their work. (new phone if they mess up)
The second ask
What would you say the most well balanced rom is? Right now im looking forward to utilizing my moto x wave and gestures, but also want to remove any bloatware. Ideally, i would like to utilize newer features with minimal slowdown... but i know the phone is limited by its hardware.
All i can say is, im so hype to be back on this phone.

Question Nokia XR20 Owner Reviews, Tips, Accessories

Hey everyone!
I noticed this section was a bit dry so thought I'd kick it off as a happy new owner of a grey Nokia XR20 in Australia. Still on 4G but will be giving Optus 5G a shot soon.
My last phone was a Razer Phone 2 and I was hesitant about going from a past bleeding edge to low-mid range phone today, but the XR20 seems decent enough for a tough phone.
So far all my go to apps like Gmail, Evernote, Plex, Youtube, WhatsApp and others are working better than they did which is all I needed. The phone is definitely miles ahead of my last tough phone a Samsung Galaxy Xcover 2 which was pretty cool but felt further from the mainstream of capability than this does.
I have only two gripes and they're about the software:
I wish I could change the Google Assistant button, I've tried a few apps but they don't seem to pick it up when pressed to reassign it. I'm keen to hear if anyone has tips, even if they're developer ones!
The camera app seems.. OK? I tried a Google Camera port for the X20 but the colours were all wrong
Final though - I know this device is on Android One, but I am a tinkerer and Linux geek so am keen to hear thoughts on how we can get some of that action on this unit.
Cheers!
Gday? Also from Oz mate, & just bought an XR20 my first non Motorola or Google phone in the last 12 years & my first tough phone since my first ever Android which was the Moto Defy a very legendary tweaker phone from the early days, up there with the HTC HD2 for modding, running CyanogenMod9 the Defy was a little beast...
I'm glad this is an Android one handset ( I've tried a few) as the update schedule has not gone to **** [email protected] Moto & it's the only way to get more stock than Moto was,
Coming from an Edge 20 pro my only gripe is the downgrade in refresh rate, I don't care if its powerful or fast & since the Edge 20 broke way too easily after owning it only 3 weeks, I just wanted something durable...Moto aren't what they were during the X series heyday...
And there's nothing else out there that's anywhere near as decent so I made the jump..
It's actually a great phone, though it's a tank of a thing , I'll be happy with it for a year or so I'd say
Hi guys. I have just one question, is there any way to disable the uninstalled apps reinstalling after every restart? It is quite annoying...
When I bought this it was advertised as having Wifi 6 (AX). I have never managed to use on Wifi 6 network (Nighthawk)
I was searching for a "myself proof" phone. The last one had fallen in salted water and not appreciated it ...
This one is "myself-proof"
It has fallen from 1.50m several times and still works.
It has fallen into salt water and still works (just try to clean eat with fresh water as soon as possible, better with demineralized water).
By the way I love the fact that water will not stay on the screen, the screen behave quite like hydrophobic. Funny.
Compared to other "rough" phone it looks more casual and is quite powerful. Battery can stand easily for a full day with full use. Sound is quite powerful (I'm a bit hard hearing).
Camera is ok for me since I have a DSLR when I want to make photo. I use either google camera or Open Camera.
Unpleasant stuff:
The red button is linked to Google Assistant and if you don't use it, it's absolutely useless. No way to reassign it.
It seems - as for now- completely non-rootable. So you are locked with Android 13.

Question Extremely torn.

I've used the P7 abit now, and some things I can't get over.
1) The edges of the screen, is sharp for a flat screen. Hard to get used to.
2) Fingerprint scanner. I know, finger has to be clean and dry. Which it always is. I've turned on screen protector mode, registered each fingerprint twice and still having issues.
One thing that is making me hesitant to return/exchange is with TMobile you have the restock fee.
I probably should have gotten the OnePlus 10t or the Moto Edge 2022.

about the fingerprint, i face the same issue, its a hit or miss, mostly hit if you hold a finger in the correct place. try to enable the onbody detection which works pretty good if you carry the device with you at most times. you can also do face unlock which solves the problem.
other than that its a good device. you are going to get used to these small first world problems. you'll adapt. the 10t has other issues, i was looking to get it but the software support and the os is not what oneplus used to be (speaking from some experience). i exchanged my 7t for the p7 and have no regrets. like they say, never settle... with the moto edge i have no support in my country so... and on paper it looks fine but not that much better than the p7 (for me the CPU and GPU are the wrong set). if you want a solid device with the best of everything no matter what the cost? there's no such thing unfortunately. you have to sacrifice some functions or performance to get what you kind of looking for. so i hope that answers your question...

I agree. I initially wanted to get the OnePlus 10t, but the manager said that the few ppl that actually bought the device, didn't have a good experience. But he didn't say why. Thought it was odd he said that because at first he said he didn't want to sway my opinion from the P7 vs the OP, lol.
