I'm thinking about getting a Moto X. I usually get a top-tier phone, but this one has really caught my eye.
I want a high-end device, but the "best" phones are all rather large. When I started looking at all the different "mini" versions, it turns out most of those phones are about the same as the Moto X. Nobody is really packaging their best phone with a smaller display; all the minis are pretty much 1.7GHz dual core units with 720-line displays. Compared to most of those the Moto X really fits my hand, and I like a lot of the features.
One thing I'm curious about is the operating temperature. My last three phones have all gotten pretty hot from time to time, but I read in a review that the Moto X draws a bit less current, and as a result it also runs a good bit cooler than some faster phones. This phone does seem to get a lot of life for a 2200mah battery.
Has anybody noticed any heat from this phone, or that it's particularly cool compared to other phones you've had? FWIW, I'd be using the Verizon version with 32GB.
Thanks in advance.
It gets warm when in my truck with GPS on, charging, and listening to podcasts... but no where near as warm as my Nexus.

Both 4 and 5.
No where near as the galaxy s4. The galaxy s4 gets so hot it burns lol.
MOTO X Slapped
I must say the Moto X is the of the coolest higher end phone I've used. There is absolutely no issue with heat on mine, even with a few hours of video running.
Both Samsung and LG phones can quite hot for me. Naturally any phone will get hot with prolonged GPS use.
i mean it gets warm, but thats it. i wouldnt call it hot compared to my Gnex, which would literally be on the verge of burning my face off. only time my X gets warm is if im using it while its charging. other than that, no problems at all

I guess it all depends on what you mean by top tier. If by top tier you mean a phone that works great as a phone, feels good in your hand, has a nice screen for its size, no lag and stock android plus, with the plus being very useful extras like touchless controls, motorola assist and active display, then the Moto X is top-tier. If by top-tier you mean has the best specs on paper but has lag due to its ridiculous OEM skin, drops calls and can't hold a 4G LTE signal well in weak signal areas, then by all means get the top-tier GNote3. I had it and returned it and got 2 Moto X's instead.

Never gets hot even when I WiFi tether my computer to it. My GNex used to get boiling hot when I did that.

What do you mean by faster? The CPU clock speed? Because I tested it side-by-side with the GNote3 and the Moto X beat the GNote3 in every data speed test I ran and opened apps and loaded web pages noticeably faster than the GNote3.
I don't think so. My note3 consistently pulls faster data TMob vs TMob on speed test.

I am on Verizon. The Moto X and the GNote3 and even my GNex all do well in strong signal areas. Where the signal is weak, the Moto X outperforms them all.

Hmmm... Probably. Didn't get to test x at work on day off. I switched to T-Mobile. My note has been pulling faster on TMob vs x on atnt. Note is still pulling down faster at apartment. At work, that will probably be true, x pulling down faster on a weaker signal. My refill runs out today on my note and might be awhile before I get to test again.

I'm too facing that issue. but that doesn't impact the usage or performance of x. even many of the youtube users checked that it is heating up little but not as xperia z2

This morning i woke up and my x was at 125° or 52c not sure if I have an issue or not but it seems like the general opinion is that it runs cool.

To me it seems that the front and back of my TMo Developer Edition is too hot. Just got an app to meaure the temp and its 39C without any serious load (facebook or just web browsing).
Anyone else has measurements to compare?
My dev edition gets hot with Maps navigation such that Maps just dies. If I charge it when using navigation, Maps dies quickly. Else it lasts for a while longer before dying. My note 3 and note 4 can go on and on with navigation even being charged at the same time.
That's nothing to worry about. If it actually overheats, it will shut down before damage is done. ?
I am stuck between Moto X Play and Moto X 2014... Can someone differentiate them on basis of Processor and what effect it has on phone,,
I have seen benchmarks of 615 to be quite close of 801, i know 615 overheats in other phones but is it as bad as non underclocked 810 heat
I Need Battery To Last Me atleast a day Without much problems (Not very heaviest of the users) and a Good Camera
Not much gaming fan although I do some occasionally (even high end games sometimes)
Both of Them are available at near Same price Here.. So anyone with experience of both can help me out??
No problem with any of the phones, none overheats, have used both of them.
Both are great phones, but:
Moto X PLAY: Much bigger battery, will last atleast a day for the heaviest of users, and some more. Better camera. Stuttery performance. SD Expansion slot. Dual Sim.
Moto X 2ND Gen: Smaller battery, will definitely last a day if you are a moderate user, but you will need to charge it every night. Fluid performance, much smoother than Play. MUCH better display. Much better to hold (Metal, and thinner). Better audio performance. Better microphones. Fast charging. 4K video Recording.
Make no mistake. The Snapdragon 801 is high end chip while the 615 is mid end and it shows. But the Play has a better camera (no 4K video though) and is generally more expandable. But the Moto X 2nd Gen seems much more capable. If you are not the heaviest of users, it will last you a day. I come home at 9:00 PM and am a moderate user with some texting, navigation and mid end games, music. I typically have over 20% battery left. I just carry a fast charger with me just in case. But till date I haven't used it except if I'm travelling and need to charge real quick at the airport. Moto X 2nd Gen also possesses better cellular quality (in my opinion). Screen-ON time of 3.5-4 hours for Moto X2, and around 6 hours for X Play.
So, I used both on a local retail store (The X Play being a bit more expensive) and here are my conclusions (I bought the X2014 a week ago):
1) The Snapdragon 801 + Adreno 330 performs considerably better than the Snapdragon 615 + Adreno 405.
While using the phone for regular stuff, like web browsing, whatsapp, instagram, etc. there were micro lags on the X Play that were almost non-existent on the X 2014. I tried to push both the hardest I could and the X Play had much more hiccups (Like fast scrolling facebook, fast pinching to zoom on chrome, quick switching between tabs on snapchat, quickly switching between apps), I guess it's due to the lower clocked A53 cluster being active more often to preserve battery. Nonetheless, both performed very well considering the price tag.
When benchmarking, the X 2014 Won on both graphics and cpu. My X 2014 always goes from 2900-3100 on Geekbench 3, while the X Play started at 2500 and went all the way down to 1700 (I guess it's due to overheating). Antutu it's the same, the X 2014 sticks between 47K and 49K, while the X Play went from 36K to 27K (Again, I think it's overheating). Bear in mind that I re-did each benchmark 5 times and I live in a hot country, which regularly sticks between 30ºC.
While gaming, same thing happens. I'm a heavy Clash of Clans, Candy Crush and Asphalt 8 player. On Clash of Clans there were no difference at all, both performed admirably and there were no hiccups at all. Candy Crush both lagged a bit on the pop-ups and when sync. with facebook, but during the gameplay I saw no hiccups on both. But when playing Asphalt, after like 30mins I saw the play getting a frame drop, but nothing that made the game unplayable, just a bit less smooth.
On the heat side, the X 2014 got warm after 30Min on Asphalt 8 while the Play was a bit hotter, but nothing that you can't lay your hands on. Acceptable.
2) The battery is where the X Play wins. I couldn't test it much becase I was on the retail store, but seeing their XDA Topics, the X Play can achieve easily 2 days of battery, even with the overheat issues. My X 2014 does around 5 hours SOT when on good coverage and WiFi (24Hrs off the charger), and gets maximum 4Hrs SOT (usually 3h30) when on 4G with mixed coverage (24Hrs off the charger). My X 2014 came with the Turbo Charger, so I can quickly replenish battery any time I need, and due to the smaller battery, Power Banks are more efficient (I have the Mi Power Bank 10400mAh and I can charge the X 2014 around 3,5 times until it gives up, the X Play I suppose that it would charge less than 2 times).
But still, X Play is the clear winner.
3) Build quality depends of who is holding these phones. I particulary found the X 2014 way prettier than the X Play, and the overall build quality also better (loose buttons on the X Play are a bit annoying). The X Play is a tad bit heavier and bulkier, the X 2014 feels a bit more polished and premium. The front fiering speaker is mono on both phones, and I found them to be quite similar. The X 2014 wins, for me.
4) Camera on the X Play is considerably better. Don't get me wrong, I'm more than happy with my X 2014 camera. When on good light conditions I can take pretty damn good shots, but I mostly use the camera for Snapchat, Instagram, Whatsapp, and for college, so I don't need the best of the best camera around. The X 2014, with the SD801, is capable of [email protected] and 4K while the X Play only records up to [email protected] Recording on 1080p 60fps is not supported on the stock camera app but it's possible. The main downside of the X 2014 camera, I could see, is when trying to get macro shots.. the camera struggles a lot when trying to focus on near objects. I don't have 4K screens to use the X 2014 feature, so for me, the X Play wins.
The 5MP Front Camera on the X Play also outperforms the 2MP on the X 2014.
5) The screen also depends on your taste. I found the 5.5" a bit big for my taste, 5.2" being exactly what I needed for one handed use. The X 2014 has much deeper colors, more contrast but the screen temperature is a bit high, the whites look yellowish, but I got used to it. The X Play has a bit more washed out colors, due to the LCD panel, but it's more color accurate. So, it depends on the taste. My main fear when buying the X 2014 was the infamous screen burn-in, but my display is fine until now. No winner here, it depends on your taste.
6) One downside of the X 2014 is the lack of microsd expansion. For me, 32GB is more than enough.. I still have 18GB free out of 25GB, with all my music, photos, backups, documents, apps, games... But having a microsd is great for emergencies and stuff, so the X Play wins for storage options.
In the end it's up to you.. I went with the X 2014, but the X Play is also a nice phone. Also, bear in mind that the X Play should get the next version of Android ( after Marshmallow ), while the X 2014 should stay at 6.X Marshmallow if Motorola keeps their updating cycle time.
Cheers and good luck with your next phone!
I would choose Moto X 2014 if you don't care about:
-Battery life.
-Software updates.
I went for the OnePlus One, but why?
Here's why...
Battery Life -------
OPO Wins here, OPO - 3100 mAh battery,
While the MX2 -2300 mAh battery :/
Warranty after unlock -------
OPO - Yes, MX2 - Nope :/
I had the exact same question one week ago. Went with the Moto X 2014, and I am loving it.
I know that there are no normal parameters to tell if the device temprerature is "normal" or not, but I want to know some opinions about it.
I have my Moto X 2014 (Lollipop 5.1) unrooted and unmodded, the temperature with a normal use is around 39-41°C and playing (The Simpsons Tapped Out) 57-59°C and around 47°C with 4G activated and using Poweramp, and 35°C idle.
It feels a little hot when playing, I think that sensation it's because the metallic borders (¿?)
Opinions please?
Nothing?
Its normal for devices to get warm with heavy ram usage but getting hot is not good
Would you say that the Moto G4 Plus is "fast" in day-to-day use? A higher rating indicates that you think the Moto G4 Plus exhibits fantastic performance. Like, is it as fast as your tears when you watch The Titanic?
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Not terrible but it does get laggy at times. Even the 4gb ram model.

when does it lag exactly ?
I have the 16GB / 2GB RAM, runs fine if not running anything aggressive like games.
I have the Moto G4 (non-plus) 32gb / 2gb ram model and can say that it is quick. Comparing to LG V10, S5 and S6, graphic intensive games are noticeably slower, but everyday use such as web browsing, app switching, email, video are all very quick. (no noticeable difference from the V10 or the S6 but fater than the S5 to me). I came from a S4 running Cyanogen that was quick and can say this phone beats the pants off of it. I don't do a any gaming really on my phone, I can say it play pokemon Go just fine however.
Overall Speed
I've got the G4 Plus with 64 Gb and 4 Gb RAM. I do have apps that are very slow in loading or sometimes even responding. I will get the Android dialog box asking me to "wait" or "close" the app. I had tried the classic "reset" and clearing, etc. No help. Definitely MUCH slower than my old HTC One M9. I don't do any games on it.
I came from a nexus 6 64GB (to xt1625), and considering the difference in price I'm quite happy with it's speed as a daily driver. I'm not running any games though.
The Moto G4 Plus, however, seems different compared to previous Moto Gs. It takes a lot of cues from the Moto G3, but also adds into the mix some new bits. Although the faster hardware does make the Moto G4 Plus run hotter compared to the Moto G3. But that is only in particular cases, such as when you are playing games for over half an hour. And in such cases, almost all phones with similar hardware show similar behaviour.
Only lag i've noticed was browsing the ridiculously ad heavy xda forums. Adaware took care of that.
Runs cool, no errors.
Not a game player.
I have the G4 Plus 32gb 2Gb RAM. I woumd say it's OK. For gaming is not very good either, heavy games tend to drop frames very often or straight up lag, in day to day usage it is fast, but it cannot handle a lot of apps open at the same time (I think it's a matter of lack of OS optimization).
Sent from my athene_f using XDA Labs
I own the G4 Plus 2GB model. I would say that performance is decent. It does day-to-day jobs quicly, but not lag-free.
I ran a comparison with the Moto Z Play (SD 625 3GB) a few days ago, and the difference is directly noticable. The X Play runs smooth, the G4 Plus does not. It's not that the G4 Plus stutters all the time, but there is room for improvement.
However, if you take the low price point of the G4 Plus into consideration, it does not disappoint.
Having 3gb/32gb model
Runs perfectly. Multitasking at it's best.
Switching between ongoing Google Maps Navigation, Play Music (or Amazon Music/Spotify) and a Browser is definitely slow and a pain while driving (2GB Model).
Looking forward to switch to OnePlus's next offering this year because I need more power.

Same experience here on Marshmallow. Had it a few months, always fast, never had any lag, slowdowns, force closes, etc. Runs perfect, couldn't ask for better. I did upgrade to N and it wasn't quite as smooth. Went back to Marshmallow and all is perfect again.
Some little lags here and there, but in general really good performance.
Hello everyone, big sony fan since the Z1 here.
Currently I own an an LG G7, that broke for a 2nd time, and got replaced.
I plan on selling the G7 they give me(since its on a sealed box) and getting another phone.
Since I've been a big fan of sony phones, I was considering getting the XZ2, but I was wondering its overall gaming performance.
I had an XZ1, that used to be a beast at gaming, I dont know if its because the specific phone I had was unique(aka silicon lottery), or it was the SD835 but its gaming performance was amazing.
The Lg G7 used to lag all over the place, even on low settings, on pubg, fortnite etc.
How is the XZ2? Can it run fortnite? Pubg? and if it does how well?
Thanks,
I've tested PUBG and it was so smooth and responsive but deleted shortly after it wasn't my cup of tea, but yeah performance was great. I mostly play Aphalt 9 which has amazing graphics, no lag it is also super smooth and the phone doesn't get hot, in 10 minutes it gets warm but thats it then it keeps that temperature for my testing. Phone is also pretty fast and snappy other than gaming, I sometimes randomly scroll through its menu because it is so smooth and responsive makes it kinda satisfying.
It have all the performance that the SD845 can give , PUBG runs good in HDR Graphics at 60fps with no stuttering at all, I even can play Need for Speed Carbon or Luigi's Mansion on dolphin emulator at more than 40fps!
It performs as SD845 performs, only difference is how long it takes to start throttling... is it 10,20 or 30 min...

Notice that the phone performance starts to throttle once the phone gets hot.
Pretty annoying at times. How i wish there is an additional accessory which we can attached to the phone to dissipate heat during intense gaming.
