This just means you have to have a unlocked bootloader, you cannot lock the bootloader once flashing Global on to Chinese & vice versa
Quote from the article you linked:- "If you have an unlocked bootloader, you can safely flash out-of-region MIUI versions using TWRP, fastboot, or the MiFlash tool."
You just can't relock on a out-of-region ROM anymore
I have the same question as OP. Really looking forward to this one. Looks like it's going to be a really affordable device for the specs it offers but I would like to know how long it usually takes for global roms to be published.
I might wait until there's a stable global rom available.
Well the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 was released 11th November & the Global ROM was available on the 21st December I believe, based of that I'd say maybe a month give or take

if not installed the gobal rom, the mi 9 still has english language, so what is the big difference between china and global rom . its still usable while bring it back to U.S , right?

On the Global ROM there is less bloatware, & it includes Google Apps, if you have Chinese ROM you get no Google Apps, also the AI button will be Chinese AI & not Google Assistant.
There's probably a few other differences I'm missing too..

I'm pretty sure you can install all the Google stuff on the Chinese ROM yes, however I'd definitely look in to it first if I where you, also I'm not sure if the AI button can be remapped

I pre-ordered from Giztop.
They contacted me saying they have the Chinese version in stock and will install Google play on the phone before shipping out.
I'm in the US.
If I go this route, can I convert to the global edition using the global rom at some point?
I'll just have to keep the bootloader unlocked?

I m new to this,. So does it mean that once unlock the bootloader I can install global miui ROM?
Everything I have read says yes. Chances are though in the near future we will see some really good custom ROMS for the phone so you may end up not even wanting to go with the stock global ROM once its out. At least that is my thinking and what I plan to do down the road.

Some banking apps don't work with a unlocked bootloader, also if your device where to be lost or stolen it's easier for the person to access your data or wipe the phone completely to sell it
I have ordered the Explorer version, which is not there yet, come the days. Has anyone experienced what it looks like with a global version, so to install it? with locked bootloader? Am now back to miui for years and have lost something the overview. Will of course open the bootloader, but that always takes a bit
Congratulation for your Explorer Edition.
you can switch from china to global with unlocked bootloader (after 300 hours) but you should not lock the bootloader back after flashing, this will brick your device.
2nd disadvantage of these chinese edition is lack of LTE band 20.
If you are a european user this will have negative impact of your mobile coverage because most of our mobile phone providers use this band.
I would also like to have had the explorer edition but lack of Band 20 isn't a compromise for me.
yes thank you for the info, just hope the Xiaomi not sometime the bootloader still locks permanently.
seems like China version can install global rom via unlocked bootloader.
is there any instruction on how to do so?
also what will happen if bootloader is unlocked? thanks in advance!

They not talking about the play store but google pay (formally known as Android pay) which doesn't work or typically doesn't work if the bootloader is unlocked, but magisk root I believe has a mod to by pass but don't quote me on that I haven't used a xiaomi device before and haven't rooted my phone since I used my old Nexus 6p (which had bootloader unlocked and root with google pay working)(using Huawei mate 10 pro without root)

Hey guys
I was wondering if I am able to unlock the bootloader of this phone and flash Xiaomi EU Rom but I am on locked Vodafone network so I am not sure if I will be able to do this because something might go wrong. If anyone has any knowledge on this subject can you please help me out
In a telegram Mi 9 Group I read that someone was in the same situation and he open the bootloader and flashed via Mi Flash a global rom and lock the bootloader successfully without problem.
Do you have telegram app? Search Xiaomi Mi 9 - Espanol on it, and ask there about what did you want to do.
How do you know you are locked on Vodafone? Mine wasn't network locked

Not every phone under contract is locked, if you have a spare SIM from another network it may be worth checking.
Either way - I suspect you won't have any issues. The part of your phone that ROMs are flashed to is on a separate chip to where the network lock is configured AFAIK.

A dual sim phone is never locked to a specific carrier. You may get some that are "branded", so they have a bit of carrier specific bloat that can be uninstalled, but they never come locked.

Hi this is my 1st ever Xiaomi phone always had Samsung
Love the phone it's mint
I'm confused when it comes to updates and all the different kind of versions to the roms
And reading some comments about ota updates I'm just confused as hell lol
So I'm in UK on Vodafone im
On miui 12.0.2 stable global
How do I get 12.5 update please as it doesn't show for me
Do you have to manually flash all updates ?
How do I know if my bootloader is locked?
How do I safely update /flash phone ?
If I flash phone will that void warranty?
Will my bank apps and Google pay work as I need Google pay ?
What is the best version to flash people and do some roms have better features to use than the 1 I'm already on ?
Sorry for being dumb I'm just scared to do things wrong
Thanks for taking time to read this and if you have spare time to reply and guide me I'd be ever so grateful. Can't imagine ever going back to Samsung I just love this phone

Starting from halfway down!
If your phone is new, the bootloader is locked.
How to safely flash? Read the threads on unlocking the bootloader. There is very little risk provided you have learned how to do it (and not much risk even if you don't).
Warranty. I don't know. But you can always reflash stock firmware and relock the bootloader.
Most people who unlock flash Xiaomi.eu ROM. It is what I use. It's based on the Chinese firmware but heavily modified.
Banking apps and google pay work just fine

Hello,
I've bought my Mi 11 Ultra from China and loving it. I've then rooted it and installed the EU fastboot version.
However, I don't like having to worry about Magisk and all the security issues that this process might entail therefore I'd like to ask a very simple question:
is there a way to turn a Chinese version into an official European version?
So basically I would like to just flash it with a EU official fw and then lock the root again so that there would be no difference between a phone bought here. In my simple mind, the only difference between the China version and the EU version is just the firmware, is that correct?
I've read it's dangerous to flash and lock the root again though? Is that true?
Thanks a lot

yes the problem is that you get security issues with most banking apps so you have to play around with Magisk. And I don't really need the bootloader to be unlocked cause i don't want custom ROMs, but apparently there isn't a solution

The EU is approved and based on the Chinese version but has the best of all the variants and works on all approved banking apps. Some people say it doesn't but have never tried.
I use the EU and have done for a few phones. I use Gpay, Lloyds Bank and most secure of all, Sky go. You can't even hide sky go using any Magisk hide app, yet it works fine with the EU. Someone said, BDO bank doesn't work, yes it does, just delete the empty twrp folder.
See screenshots of both security and DRM levels on this EU ROM phone. The boot loader stays visually unlocked but it works as if it is locked.
If you have any questions, please message me, I'll tell you straight if you are still worried.

The unlocked bootloader doesn't give banks problems (at least here I never had), I had a CC9 Pro (CN), I unlocked the bootloader and put the official global ROM and used it normally, I had no problems with the banks. Understand that unlocking the bootloader and root are completely different things.
To my knowledge this is not possible!
While the CN version and the international version share many mobile bands they are not similar and it's not possible to change frequency bands. So the hardware will remain CN whichever ROM you flash....
As mentioned in the posts before you can flash different ROMs but only as long as the Bootloader is unlocked....
All correct, you can only relock the bootloader if you flash the original CN Rom, the one your phone came preinstalled with
