Im 61 and learning - Moto X4 Questions & Answers

Is it possible to get the Moto x4 to use the SIM card as storage and what's the easiest way to get the green notification light to work?

If you wan't to transfer contacts on to your SIM card you can by going in to your Contacts app -> settings -> export or use an app from play store. If you want to enable the LED you will have to root your phone.

If you were asking about using the SIM card about storage for media files and such... the answer is no. SIM cards are not used for that. It doesn't matter what phone you have.

Then what do use the sim card for? Thers a company called OneClickRoot that wants to charge $39 to help me root my phone, is it worth it?

No need to shell out $39 for root on your X4. You just need to unlock your bootloader, boot TWRP, and install magisk.

Your speaking in a foreign tongue to me. I don't have a clue how do those things I never even heard of root till I bought this new phone. The company told me that on my particular phone it's harder to root.

I suppose you know sim card is used for calling purpose. It may also be used to store contacts but not other stuff. If you can manage without notification led then I'd suggest don't root. You may use moto display feature which automatically shows notifications when you peek up the device.

Yea I meant Sd card. Told you I'm new to all this moto x4 stuff. I took the sim card out of my Iphone se and put it in my moto and had a instantly usable moto phone.

@TaranScorp Whoever said rooting a Moto X4 is hard, is trying to rip you off. I personally have used MANY phones that's WAY harder to root than our device. As someone else said, it's just three main steps. And will only take around 20 minutes, including all the prepwork.

If you wish to use your sd card to store your photos on it; open Camera -> Swipe Left -> Click the small wheel in the top right corner -> Save settings -> click on storage -> choose SD Card
Also, everything needed to root this phone is FREE!! if somebody is telling you otherwise he is trying to scam you.
And you can just enable the Moto Display instead of the LED light and then you don't even have to root your phone.

In general, I would recommend against rooting this phone unless you have very specific needs that just wont be satisfied without root. The reason I say that is because once you unlock this phone, you will never be able to use Google Pay unless you are rooted AND google hasn't figured out that you are rooted / unlocked. Sometimes you can trick them (with latest Magisk methods), and sometimes you cannot. Even if you re-lock your phone and go back to a stock build, it will never be able to use google pay since the tampered flag is permanent.

[Q] URGENT! d3 unlock question

if i get my droid 3 unlocked, can i migrate my contacts from my at&t gsm sim card onto the d3? my previous phone doesn't have an sd slot, normal usb hookup, or any other option, and my carrier wants to charge me $50 to have my contacts migrated from the sim card to an sd (which i already own) to insert into my d3.
no fluff, please. don't answer unless you know, and i really only need a "yes" or "no." i need as fast an answer as possible!!
Get another phone
Transfer the SIM card to the other phone
Copy your contacts there
Get your D3
Get your new SIM card and put it in the other phone
Copy your contacts back to your SIM card
Put it back inside your D3
You're done
Aren't you going to keep the old SIM card?

[Q] Rooting with no SIM?

So, my N6 is supposed to arrive on Tuesday. I am currently using a Galaxy S3 on Verizon. I am going to trim my SIM card and pop it into the nexus when ready.
My question is, can I put on a custom recovery, root, decrypt, update to 5.0.1, etc all without utilizing the SIM? Is there anything specific other than using mobile cell/data services that are going to fail from not having a SIM? I know that when the SIM accidentally pops out of my GS3 the phone pops up a window saying a reboot is necessary to try to find the SIM and there is only a single OK/Reboot button and no other options.
I want to try to do all the main imaging and rooting work while still utilizing my GS3 as my phone, and then when I have the N6 ready I nandroid backup both phones and then pop the SIM over. I did pick up a nano to micro SIM adapter in case I need to move the SIM back to the GS3.
Well, I guess if no one knows I will give it a try when I get the phone this week and update you all on if it works.
you can do whatever you want with it without ever putting a sim card inti it. the sim card is only for your phone/data provider. and has nothing to do with rooting your phone.

Cool. I figured as much but had not heard anyone that had done it. I wasn't sure if there was some technical requirement to have the phone activated before root/recovery took place or anything. All my previous phones came from carriers so they were all activated before leaving the store and before being rooted.

na, ive done that. my sgs4 was never with a sim. my n4 and n5 are without a sim at the moment, the n4 and n5 were rooted before i even booted it the first time.
I did it with my new N6 because I had to wait as well to get new Sim.
Unlocked bootloader, rioted in encrypted. Screwed it up and started all over again. I think I flashed the factory image 5 times that night trying new stuff

[Q] Unlock after rooting - is that possible?

So, my friend just bought a Galaxy S6 from T-Mo. Nice device and all.
But... she only speaks a bit of english. Her major language is portuguese, so I installed a custom ROM to enable full portuguese translation. Unfortunately, she called me today about her SIM card.
Her device, right now, is rooted and tied to T-Mo. As the operator states in its website...
Device not recognized by your service provider. Please call customer care. Rooting your device will disable the unlock application
Download the latest T-Mobile software to continue

Also, from the Play Store description...
Device Unlock is an application that allows you to request and apply a Mobile Device Unlock directly from the device. The application is compatible only with Samsung Avant devices at this time.

(she just realized that the phone was locked after she bought the nano SIM, which took 72~96h after the ROM flash, last tuesday, so no way to detect it)
So, four questions:
1) Am I able to unroot and retry the operation? (using, of course, T-mo stock ROM)
2) Does KNOX Status interfere something on it? and...
3) There is a way to request the unlock code from T-Mo?
4) According to Play Store comments, no one succeded in unlocking the device using this "tool". Even Samsung Avant's owners. Is that confirmed?
Thanks in advance.
.......I was able to unlock my phone after rooting and then returning to stock. Even stranger is I still owe $297 on my EIP. The app worked and says I'm permanently unlocked. I have no idea why it worked.
T-Mo said that the phone needs to be activated on the network (IDK if it was at least once, I think it was something like that).
Because this phone never saw the color of a T-mo SIM card, in fact. So it's a 50% chance of going totally wrong.
Update on the case:
for now, phone is still locked.
When I try to use the T-Mobile Device Unlock app, it says that "Server is not responding". IDK what to do anymore.
Downloading MetroPCS ROM to see if I can do anything about it... but no luck until now.

Unlocked version on Verizon question.

So I recently purchased a Verizon phone direct from the store and forgot that I needed to get the unlocked version. Long story short, I got a google unlocked phone and updated it over wifi to the latest firmware. I am not sure I want to unlock the bootloader and root just yet, but I would like to start using it. I also need to return the verizon one with in 14 days to get a refund. so my question is, once I put the verizon sim in the unlocked google phone, will the OEM Unlocking option get greyed out preventing me from rooting down the road if I choose? Right now it is obviously available and I can toggle it. TIA.
EDIT: I meant to put this in the Q&A Section, not sure how it got here. Sorry mods. Please move.

So my understanding is that you now have 2 phones, correct? One on Verizon that you will pay $35 restocking fee on and another Google version that is, naturally, unlocked. I have an unlocked Google version as well with a Verizon sim in it. If your oem switch is active now then there is nothing you can do that will deactivate it. You're safe and you can send back the VZW phone today.

That's great news!! Thank you. I was worried Verizon would be able to toggle it somehow and keep me from accessing it once the sim provisioned on the Google phone. For instance, WiFi HotSpot works on the google phone now, but I assume once I put the verizon sim in that will stop working.

That toggle disable is built into the device and not subject to sim or carrier. Just as enabling it is as well. But to your hotspot I'm just not sure how that works. I have hotspot on Verizon I guess because of the plan I'm on so I never thought about it. How does that work if you don't have the Google phone with a carrier yet? I'm kind of out of it when it comes to that since I only use it when the electricity goes out at home or I'm in a stupid hotel that charges for internet.

Yea, I'm not sure. On the Verizon phone with the sim card it in pops up with a notification that says to call my carrier to activate this feature. The Google phone let's me setup a hotspot and put in SSID info and password. I know it has something to do with build.prop, was just curious if that is something that will change once I pop in sim.

For anyone else curious, the OEM unlock toggle is still available after installing Verizon sim. In case it matters, I started the phone first time with no sim, connected to WiFi, updated to December firmware, added Google account, setup phone, updated apps, setup WiFi hotspot, then installed sim. After reboot, my wife could connect to my hotspot but could not get internet access. But OEM unlock is good to go with this method. So I'll have to root and do tethering I suppose.

I know I tried to use an old sprint sim in my 3Xl once I upgraded to Barbet and TMobile said that the sim was still tied to the old device. It could be that you need a never-used sim if that is even a thing. I have figured out how to double-tap the back of the device to launch an app, you could google double tap back and then have that open a flashlight/routine of some sort maybe. I believe there is also a Magisk mod released for all google devices that changes some functions of the notification/time etc. Look around more and you'll find some of your answers either in the forum here or through google search.
Good luck!
Solved!! H2O wireless problem. Got a new H2O starter SIM, the phone recognized it. Then I called H2O to swap my old number to the new number. Now I have both Fi (eSIM) and H2O SIM card working. If it did not work, the phone was going back.
Put the new SIM into the old phone it works there too.
Still looking for answers to items 2,3,4 from my first post.

Shake to trigger flashligh - Really missing the convenience. I think it was native Android feature wish Google would put it back in.

Pretty sure that's a motorola specific feature, not android. Either way, it does have it's uses.

My Samsung phones also had the feature.
I did find an app that appear to work well, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.rnazarevych.shaketorch. I needed to adjust the sensitivity to max.
I am from India, where Google missed Pixel 6 series, and Pixel 5a launch is coming soon. Should I buy 5a or wait for my brother to get it from Europe?
