Update loop OPW28.2 on Amazon variant - Moto X4 Questions & Answers

Iif I try to do the OTA update to 28.2 it just gets stuck on part 3 and does restart loops for hours until I give up and wipe the phone
Is there a way to update the Amazon variant to something else that won't loop? (Pie would be great, but I just want at least the security patches)
I have looked and hopefully I just missed the post on how to do it for the AMZ variant, I have seen posts for the retail version, but no love for the amz variant.
Please let me know if you have successfully conquered this issue or if I'm hosed and should return it.
Currently on OPW28.1 (April 1 2018 security patch)
Android 8.1
Kernel 4.4.78
under that is says:
dirty (gcc version 4.9.x 20150123
(prerelease) (GCC)
sku is XT1900-1
(so my phone has a dirty pre-release kernel? LOL)
thank you for any advice you can give
Steve

please help, return window closing
I would love to upgrade to pie as easy as Amazon says, but it is just going to 99% of part 3 of 6 on update 28.2
Can anyone please let me know if they have flashed the Amazon variant to Pie?
I'm concerned about the security updates
thank you for your time and consideration,
Steve

Have you tried using the amazon pie firmware? You can get it here https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmwar...ubsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml.zip
You should be able to flash it in fastboot mode.

retail first?
I saw on this post https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x4/how-to/stock-install-stock-android-pie-t3873129
that if not on retail that I would first need to update it to retail, I just don't want to brick it
I have yet to see a tutorial on how to flash the AMZ variant, I can follow directions and flash devices, I just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing
Please let me know if I can just update directly to the firmware you posted or if I need to do something else beforehand
thank you very much
Steve

note 8 sm-n950U update to oreo from 7.1.1

Hi guys,
I want to know how to update to latest oreo update with all the security patches.
I am following this how-to thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...w-to-install-android-oreo-snapdragon-t3716281 but in the OP the links are broken.
Can anyone update me on this?
The phone is from verizon but I didn't use it on verizon. I got this phone last November. Currently using on Cricket, so probably I don't get automatic updates from Verizon.
my note 8 info:
7.1.1
experience v. 8.5
security patch level Nov 1, 2017
Baseband v. N950USQS2BQK2
Thanks in advance.

I am unsure if you should be on a much newer filmware or not. Sometimes a factory reset can resolve OTA not coming through, this will delete the phone memory though, so back up your data.
You can also get official filmware from sammobile and updato. Just if you want to flash Oreo with Odin, make sure you use the latest version of Odin (3.13.1)

I am on Cricket and using Verizon note 8 that I got from last December. Last update was in November when I still have Verizon. After inserting Cricket sim card, there has never been an update anymore. I turned on Wifi and went into settings> software update to refresh, and there is no awaiting update. I didn't change to unlock firmware (as I do not know how). How do you go about installing the updates to latest Oreo using Odin? I am on 7.1.1 with build 2BQK2

I recommend that you try a factory reset to see if that pushes the OTA update.
If this fails, I will help you step by step with Odin.

Moto X4 F.A.Q.s Thread

Decided to do this write up to hopefully create a one stop shop for all. Thank you MODs for sticky!
DISCLAIMER - Modify your device is at your own risk. Check any command set you use to flash a rom to assure it does NOT have a command to relock the bootloader. DO NOT under any circumstances attempt to re-lock your bootloader!
Enjoy!
1. Who makes the Moto X4?
Manufactured by Motorola which is owned by Lenovo.
2. How many variants/models are there of the Moto X4?
Motorola Moto X4 XT1900-01 variant
3 Models: Retail, Android One, Amazon
Canada, USA
Motorola Moto X4 XT1900-02 variant
Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, New Zealand
Motorola Moto X4 XT1900-04 variant
Latin America
Motorola Moto X4 XT1900-05 variant
Europe
Motorola Moto X4 XT1900-06 variant
Brazil
Motorola Moto X4 XT1900-07 variant
Italy, Ukraine,
Discussion thread here started by @Jithin91.
3. Is there a difference between the models?
They have the exact same hardware other then certain non-US variants offer dual-sim, 4gb memory, and 64gb storage options. Their firmwares are different slightly. XT1900-01: Retail has more Motorola apps and features like the One-Button Nav exclusively. Android One is more of a pure Android experience and will have the least bloatware but has some Motorola features. Amazon has Alexa and some Motorola features.
4. Can the bootloader be unlocked and how?
The only way to know if your variant can be unlock is via Motorola's website, via their instructions. There is no alternative method. This is the definitive way to find out if yours can be unlock. Typically, users are reporting that the Amazon model cannot be unlocked.
Lenovo themselves has not released factory signed stock images. Once you unlock the bootloader, THERE IS NO RETURN. Orange bootloader msg will appear at boot, even when you perform #9. SafetyNet will pass if not rooting.
5. Can it be rooted, and how? Custom recovery (TWRP)?
Bootloader must be unlocked first.
[GUIDE][Video] How to Root Moto X4 & Install TWRP Recovery by @munchy_cool
SafetyNet passes with latest Magisk
Don't forget to grab latest files from XDA Magisk Thread and TWRP. Have to install apk after flashing.
6. How do I remove the orange unlock bootloader warning at boot?
[GUIDE][Video/Text] How to Remove Unlocked Bootloader Warning on Moto X4 by @munchy_cool
Also, if you flash stock firmware, the msg is there only on Oreo 8.1 and Pie. The msg isn't there if you flash Nougat or Oreo 8.0.
7. Are there any customs ROMs/Kernels yet?
First off, BIG thanks to @erfanoabdi! He didn't even own the device but did the work to make it possible.

11. Can I flash a different stock firmware on my device? ie flash Android One on Retail or another variant
Yes. Non-US variant users have reported successful flashes of US firmwares in this thread. Ensure you have a TWRP backup before performing just in case.
12. I am rooted and now Official OTAs don't install
This is a known issue with no fix. Your only option is to wait for copy of latest firmware to be available and manually flash it without the erase userdata to keep your data (customized script here). Another option is if you are receiving the OTA notification, manually re-flash current firmware build without the erase userdata to keep your data and proceed to accept the OTA (You will have to re-install TWRP/re-root.)
13. What the hect is this A/B partition stuff people keep mentioning?
Great XDA article will best explain it all.
When you boot into TWRP, where it shows that active slot, remember when you do a flash you flash to the other slot. Example: If you're on A, you will flash to slot B and vice versa. Yes you can have stock firmware on one and a custom ROM on another but they share the same data partition. So its not dual boot in the way you're thinking.
14. Best camera to use?
Refer to this XDA Thread by @uccollab and this reddit thread.
15. I'm not on Retail version, how can I enable One Button Nav?
For Oreo - TBD
For Pie - Post by @jhedfors - Need root

I have an XT1900-7 with 3GB RAM / 32GB Storage / Dual Sim, it was sent direct from Motorola/Lenovo as a replacement, anyone know what variant this would be? It came with a two-pin Turbo Power adapter but I am in the UK, they then sent me a UK charger.
Don't have 8.1 yet but have the notification for the OPWS27.2.3, 1 June 2018 OTA update although I can't install it due to an error. I have Magisk installed with unlocked Bootloader etc. Don't have a backed up bootloader from stock unfortunately as it was wiped when I did the whole bootloader/magisk thing.
Would it be safe to flash the 8.1 update from here: https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=746163614322270003
Cheers for the info.

Go to settings, system, regulatory information, what variant does it say?
Is that an OTA or full firmware? Should be safe. For an OTA, it will fail if it can't install.

Thanks for this thread. I got Moto X4 today, coming from the Nexus 5X....
I have some concerns about OEM unlocking, bootloader as well, damn a/b partitions, variants...
It was way simpler and seemed safer with nexus devices I have.
Is there some kind of emergency recover software for if whatever goes wrong to manage fixing softbricks and returning to safe stock in such cases, like wugsfresh NRT?

There is no 3rd party software available at this time. It is definitely more then just flashing a single Google factory image image via recovery. We're spoiled.

There are some firmware files below the "copy partition.zip" file on that second post. I mean what are those files? There is no description about those files on that thread. I asked on that thread. And I got replied as refer to your this thread of Moto X4 F.A.Q.s. Kindly tell me.

Nokia 7 plus ta-1055 firmware request & questions

Hi there,
I have a TA-1055 which is the WW 4gb RAM single-sim version, mostly sold in UK and Italy (?)
I bricked it flashing twrp uncorrectly then I wanted to download an original firmware, but versions available online are just for TA-1046 and TA-1062.
Since the 1062 is 6gb RAM, I think I'd have to go for the 1046, would it work anyway on the 1055?
I honestly don't think so, that's why I'm desperately searching for the proper firmware.
Any help/suggestion?
Thanks guys,
always the bests!
1055,1046 and NonChinese(with AndroidOne logo on back) 1062 have same OTA FW
only chinese(without AndroidOne logo on back) version of 1062 have diferent
According to this manual, I installed Android 9.0 of my TA-1055.
Everything was OK
https://www.techmesto.com/nokia-7-plus-android-pie-update-manually/
I got the October security update over OTA!!

Do you remember which security patch you were on before you flashed twrp? And were you on pie or Oreo?
I have the stock boot images for most of the firmware and security patch updates, so I can provide you help, I believe. One of my friends has a ta-1055 single sim and my boot.img worked for him

AT&T Note 9 still stuck on August security build - Odin advice needed

I've got an AT&T branded Note 9 stuck at the Augist security patch. I've tried a few things (clearing cache on software update, setting date forward, safe mode, Smart Switch) and none have worked, so I'd like to give ODIN a try.
Based on the version I'm at now, can anyone recommend the specific files/versions I'll need to use in order to get my phone up to date but NOT wipe my data? I'd be fine with whatever the latest AT&T release is if it means that I might again begin receiving OTA updates.
My current info is in the attached screenshot. Any help would be appreciated. I'm not technically inept, but it's been a while since I flashed an update via unofficial means and never on a Samsung device.
Thanks,
-Brett.
Just download the most recent version of the firmware with SamFirm tool, then flash it with ODIN. Use HOME_CSC and you shouldn't have to wipe.
After checking sammobile, only 1 firmware available for n960u at&t which is that august firmware.

Pardon my ignorance, but would that put me on a path to no longer get updates from AT&T directly? Meaning, if I applied the latest updates that's not AT&T specific, would that cause me to no longer get updates from AT&T (not that I've been getting even those...) in the future?
Thanks,

In my experience, Sammobile never has the current ATT firmware. They have all the other carriers, just not ATT. Plus it's slow AF to download from them.
That's why I said to use the SamFirm tool to download it. It always pulls the most recent firmware and does it directly from Samsung servers, so it's super fast and reliable.

Why would that take you off the ATT update path? I never suggested using firmware that wasn't specific to ATT. You download the most recent firmware from ATT with the SamFirm tool and flash it in ODIN.
In model you put SM-N960U and for region, you use ATT. As long as you're on an official ATT build, you stay on the ATT update path.
The SamFirm tool just pulls the updates directly from the Samsung servers, rather than going through slow-ass sammobile or updato.

That's totally my own ignorance/caution showing. It's been quite a while since I did any sort of ROM flashing and I'm really out of the loop. I was just double checking that what you were suggesting was the latest for AT&T and not a global update of some sort.
Thanks for clarifying. I'll give the SamFirm/ODIN combo a try when I get home from work. I'll be sure to back up first (assuming Safe Switch is a good way to do so?) and hope things don't get wiped in the process. Seems to be conflicting advice between you and Venom0642, but even if it gets wiped it's not a huge deal as long as I'm backed up.
Thanks again for your time!

Yup, just back up with Smart Switch and Samsung Cloud.
When you flash with ODIN, just skip the USERDATA file and use HOME_CSC instead if CSC_OYN. That SHOULD avoid wiping your phone. But ATT is weird, so I can't promise that.

Glad you got it all figured out!!
Will this work on a Note 9 that was originally on Sprint converted to AT&T? I bought this phone on Ebay to use for ATT and the software shows as ATT/ATT/SPR. I am still on October update and want to try to flash the update to at least December.

Doing hours and hours of research and fact digging, I guess either I've read the wrong things, or haven't found the right thing to read, but my question seems simple enough.
My Phone: AT&T LG V40 Thinq
Software Version: V405UA10n
Android Version: 8.1.0
Kernel Version: 4.9.65
Build Number: OPM1.171019.026
Android Security Patch: March 1st, 2019
There appears to be no known root for this device, I actually paid OneClickRoot to root my phone, and received a refund just as fast. In my looking around, I noticed that you have to have an unlocked bootloader to be able to root your phone, now with this being said, the European model: EU LMV405EBW does have the availability of an unlocked bootloader and the availability of root.
I downloaded the kdz of the EU LMV405EBW and before I go jackin everything up, I want to know if it's at all possible or "just a given" that since the phone can be unlocked, will my US AT&T sim card work in the unlocked EU version of the phone...?

AFAIK, i still not find any dll and lgup which compatible with lg v40.. it makes me sad since i still not be able to flash the phone which stuck in december 2018 security patch (HK version). So, we might have to wait until someone comes up with an idea which i doubt they will cause this phone is soo underrated.

I had a similar situation, I had a lm-405ua that I wanted to flash to a TW 405ebw firmware. I used the information from https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v40/how-to/guide-lgup-root-t3967858 and all went fine.

Hi. I'm having the AT&T version (LM-V405UA). Can I cross-flash firmware on this model? If so, what kind of firmware (name, type) should I need to pay attention to? Thanks.

You can read the link above I provided on info regarding cross-flashing using LGUP.
In terms of what you flash, what is the problem you are trying to solve by flashing a different firmware? In my case I wanted a regional firmware that supported voice over wifi with my telco.
