Custom partition sizes? - Galaxy S III Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bricked my s3mini and had to restore everything with odin. Now I am back on cm12.1, all good so far.
However, I am 99% sure last time I installed it I used a custom pit file to change the partition layout. I think I got the file somewhere from this forum.
At the moment, there is at least 500MB of my system partition unused, and I would love to use that space somewhere else. Iirc there were multiple to choose from with different sizes for the partitions.
I searched for hours, but can not find anything regarding this anymore! At this point I think I am just crazy and confusing it with a different phone?
Long story short: Do custom pit files to decrease /system size and increase /data size exist for this phone? If yes where could I find them?
Any hint greatly appreciated!

[Q] Firerat's Custom MTD Partitions

Is it possible to flash Firerat's Custom MTD Partitions and then flash a Nand backup instead of flashing the rom and starting from scratch???
I'm thinking of using Firerat's Custom MTD Partitions but i dont want to go through the hassle of reinstalling all my apps and restoring all my setting to what they currently are.
I'm running aospCMod 2.3.3 GB (3/26/'11) on CDMA Hero
thanks for any help and responses!
Restoring your nand backup with standard partitions won't work after creating firerat's custom partitions. I don't think they will, anyway. You can try it. More than likely the nandroid restore won't work (might tell you there's not enough space in one of the partitions) or it won't fully boot, and you'll have to start from scratch.
Titanium Backup makes this process pretty painless, minus the clicking install, install, install... it even saves app settings and preserves Market links.

You can restore a nand backup if the new partitions have enough space. I will do this if I'm shrinking my system partition to accommodate a smaller ROM that I had already flashed. I haven't noticed any issue when doing it. Just follow the steps, and make sure your partitions are in line with what you need.
thanks for your reply!
I'll wait till a new realease of aospCMod is out then i'll try it out.

No problem. I'm running aospCMod. I had my partitions set at 130 10. I set them a bit conservative to allow for all the updates that were coming out. Since we haven't gotten an update since 3/26, and I was suffering serious flash withdrawals, I nanded my 3/26 install, then reflashed new partitions of 90 4, then restored my back up. 90 4 is still a bit conservative, and you can probably go to 72 2 depending on the size of the GAAPs and tweaks you flash with the rom.
Enjoy the mod, the increased data size is incredible.

And just a word of warning make sure you have atleast a class 6 sd card. Someone told me itll work with any class (i had a class 2) and eventually re flashing the MTD boot killed my sd card. Soooo just throwing my 2 cents out there. Its a great method though =]
Sounds like a bad SD card or something, mod has (or shouldn't..) absolutely no effect on your card at all.

Really now? Cause i heard it could effect that.
Which doesnt make sense cause it uses internel space. I guess Partioting would effect it but thats different. Perhaps youre right. Ill look into it =]
The OP of the Firerat thread explains what it does even. Doesn't do anything to the sd card. Or shouldn't. Have used it many times since the summer with absolutely no ill effect.

The first number specifies the size (in MB) to make the system partition. The second number specifies the size (in MB) to make the cache partition. Taking into account the size of all other partitions (bootloader, boot, recovery, misc), any leftover space after that is pushed into the data partition.
So your resulting data partition will be (The default size of the data partition + the size shrunk from the system partition + the size shrunk from the cache partition).
Thanks for clearing that up for me.

So I made a Nand Backup, Flashed FR's Mod 1.5.3 set to 105 5, then restored the Nand and flashed the FR_boot.zip and it WORKED!!!
this is AMAZING... now i have a total of 368MB of internal memory (233MB free)
Thanks for the help guys!!!!
I just joined the firerat bandwagon, it's kinda cool

In your opinion should i leave those number as they are, or isthere a benefit by changing them. Especially if i dont know exactly what changing those numbers would do haha

what i did to determine the numbers was check the size of /system in my latest Nand backup and gave it some extra head room.
i may change it again to a larger number as i feel that i didnt provide enough of this "head room" for /system

[Q] Resize /system partition, how?

I'm on latest CM9 with Semaphore 1.2.4, but this latest update used up a lot of space in /system partition which only left me 2MB spaces. I need extra spaces for system app and new bootanimation, how?
You cant change the system partition size however to get the space in it try moving your app to sdcard.

How sure are you on that? From what I understand PIT files in ODIN can change partition layout. If one can change partition layout, one should be able to increase /system as well.
That said, I find Android very confusing. Some examples:
Onboard flash is not a SD card. A SD card is something you can just pull out of the device. Yet android refers to the onboard flash - or well, more accurately a specific partition on the onboard flash - as SD card.
CWM backup is supposed to do a *FULL* backup. Yet it does not include my pictures. No matter what format/wipe options I choose in CWM, the pictures don't go away... I have a whole different concept off a full wipe / factory reset / format SD than that.
It seems several tools format the wrong thing.
App data directories seem to move all over the place. I usually make nandroid backups and I have issues restoring my app *data* every time I use another ROM.
All that said, I'm a big time linux user. I'm extremely familiar with system maintenance on computers. However Android is new to me. All the confusing on naming etc. however is a HUGE !#@%!!#% obstacle.
But why explain things clearly or use terms what they're for. Much easier to confuse people right? At least someone can make money of it then.

All new version of jelly bean will be of this size only....
Delete /system/media/videos and convert cyanogenmod wallapapers to user apps. Saves ~15 mb

Sorry to bump such old thread.
I was offered a I9000 that I would like to use as second phone.
I flashed I9000XXJVU_I9000OXAJVU_OXA through odin, and then root (cf-root) and MackayRom 1.7 .
As it says in the rom thread, I have a space problem. Is there any chance better than this one?
Any possibility of repartitioning the internal storage?
Here is my partition scheme:

[Q] Wrong partition size on my N7000

Hello folks.
First post here on XDA but I use this forum since I bought my Defy a couple of years ago.
Here is my question and sorry about my english.
I was a victim of Galaxy Note softbrick some months ago.
I did revive my device with the help of some tutorials, especially the one from forest1971, which helped me a lot.
But I noticed the partition size of the Internal SD, its completely wrong.
Instead of 16gb, it's showing only 4gb.
I tried several custom PIT files, original PIT file from Samsung and no results at all. Always showing 4gb.
Is there a way to revert my partition to the original size? Some partition manager or stuff like that.
I miss those extra 12gb because of photos and games.
Any kind of help and advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Hmmm tricky indeed;
i found this url
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/SD_card_partitioning
which shows how to partition your sdcard, internal memory should be shown aswell, you could try to partition and format it [on your own risk].

Thanks for the answer.
I tried this program and nothing happened.
It still shows only 4gb on the partition.
Now I saw the partition program, I just recalled I formatted the partition on recovery. Maybe that's the problem, but I can't find a way to format it back to the whole space, the 16gb
Is there a way I can do it?
Thanks for any help!

[Q] PIT files to repartition?

I would like to repartition my internal sd card so that I have much more space for apps (games in particular) as I have upgraded to a Note 3 and wish to use my t879 primarily as a gaming device.
There are instructions on repartitioning through ADB and parted, but whenever I try to use parted to give me a partition table I get
"Error: Unable to satisfy all constraints on the partition." I have searched google for about 10 hours and through every related xda post, only to find no solution to this error whatsoever.
I found on the N7000 forums that a user created modified PIT files to repartition through ODIN.
That sounds like a great work around to my problem with parted. Does anyone know how to get PIT files for the T879 and modify them in the same way?

[solved[ sm-t710 32 gb - internal capacity shows as 25.4gb total (correct?)

Hi there,
I'm trying to find out if this is the correct capacity listed under windows, I assume the missing GB is hidden away for system partitions, am I correct in thinking this?
I just had to re-flash my device because it said I only had 9 gb capacity... so I'm fairly distressed, I'm pretty sure 25.4gb is normal. (27,282,948,096.00 bytes). Let me know if yours is also (27,282,948,096.00 bytes).
Thanks. :fingers-crossed:
Edit:
It's 5:02 am and I remembered there is a storage area in options, apparently 6.57 gb is allotted to the system memory. Everything is back to normal.
Made this mistake again, for some reason re-partition kept checking when opening odin, was super tired last night and didn't notice.
I wasn't able to fix this with the entire image from sammy compressed into one (including hidden and pit files), I had to do it that way, then go into stock recover, wipe cache, wipe partition, go back to download mode, select the pit file individually in odin, flash it and see if it fixes it. 9 gb internal storage is not normal for this tablet, 25.4gb is.
Sorry for bumping but I nearly crapped my self because I couldn't remember how I fixed this so future reference for anyone.
