Hi guys,
I honestly thing that this is a unique situation. I have done a lot of searching, not just here but on Googlez as well, and no one seems to present a solution for me.
I have a Galaxy S that I received yesterday. I thought this was going to be a new hand set but it has been used. I know this because the previous user has set a pattern lock that I don't know on it.
So I have been trying to wipe this phone so that I can use it. I have tried a lot of avenues and yet nothing has worked. Here is what I have tried:
Reboot Into Recovery Mode : I believe I have tried every button combination to get into the recovery/maintenance mode so I can select wipe. However, when I try a combination (for example holding vol down and power) the phone gets to the initial boot logo, goes black, shows the same logo again, goes back, and repeats this in a loop until I let go of one of the buttons. When I do that it boots normally.
So this seems to indicate that the recovery mode on this phone is broken. Anyone else have any ideas with this bit?
ADB : Ok, so I turn the phone on to the lock screen. Then I plug in the USB cable to the computer. First, the device drive unsuccessfully installs on Win 7 every time. Then I fire up CMD, navigate to my ADB folder, and run 'adb devices' this just returns an empty list of devices attached.
I assume that based on the results of ADB that 'debugging via usb' is not turned no. I cannot turn this on because I'm locked out. Anyone know a way round this?
Special Code : Apparently there's a special code that can be entered on these Galaxy S devices when in the phone normally to wipe it. You have to enter this code via the Dialer (my mate tells me the code is '*2767*3855#'). I can't get to the normal dialer because I'm locked out so I try and use the Emergency Dialer. However, this proves unsuccessful as the phone just tells me that the code is not an emergency number.
At the moment I cannot see a way to fix this phone. It is impossible to find who used this phone before me.
Any ideas are welcome.
Before anyone Calls BS on this "Stolen Phone" its not and it is legit i can verify that the phone is legit and defiantly not stolen.
If I bought a "new" phone which is actually a "used" phone, I would return it!
And if it is legal, that should not be the Problem.
Anyway:
For the normal way to unlock the phone if you forgott your pattern you need the gmail account.
Without adb or 3-button-mode your phone is kind of useless.
He is just doing the combo wrong if you ask me. Hold the buttons until you see the initial bootscreen and then let go. If it doesn't work, 3 key combo might indeed be disabled
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
It was not purchased it was given as a competition and there was nothing stipulating that the handset would be new.
Obviously the competition handset had been used as a demo before being given out as a prize and they had forgot to factory reset the handset before giving it out.
Problem is Gmail, lock pattern, adb (doesn't seem to work as usb debug must have been left of) , and recovery wont work by the looks of things. Also tried to call the handset and press back button but must have updated FW
The people who held the comp have been notified but obviously where there is an android problem you guys know your onions so we ended up posting here.
I was just about to say the same thing as Kenneth. This is indeed a device won through a competition with Samsung them selves.
What combinations of buttons are talking about? I've tried and read about a lot, but would like to what you guys think the combination should be.
Any combination does seem to do the same thing though:
Hold down till the logo appears the release = Normal Boot
Hold down till the initial logo changes to a black screen = Normal Boot
VolUp+Home+Power is the one i am talking about
Wait until u get the white text logo and release as soon as you see it. If it doesn't work, combo is broken and the phone will indeed be useless until you can get the right pattern
You should try it like this and stick to the order!
Hold Volume up + Home (sqaure bottun in the midle) + Power on
When Galaxy S (white on black) appears you can release all buttons. It should go to recovery, if not this mode is disabled on your phone.
Even so I would try to swap it! If it is from Samsung itself that should not be a Problem at all.
OH... MY... DAYS!
Ok! The three button combination, and then releasing it as soon as the logo appeared, worked. I have successfully wiped the phone and am in.
Great advice guys. Thanks.
Thanks from me as well quick response and always awesome knowledge.
Oddly enough the combinations from vodafone uk and others were different so you guys are amazing.
Cheers Kenny
Thread moved to Q&A.
I am in the same situation and the 3-combo combination doesn't work .
It doesn't communicate either ...
So the power button on my phone went out, which made getting to download mode and flashing back to stock a lot of fun, let me tell you. I eventually had to buy a JIG.
Anyway, I run ODIN to flash back to stock. It completes and as I'm disconnecting the cable, the battery falls out. (I was able to get into download mode because CM7 auto boots when it had power, something stock does not do.)
So it's flashed back to stock, it didn't have a micro SD card in... but am I right in thinking that the internal cards contents are still there? I.E. My pictures and apps and... the cyanogenmod nightly zip I was using? I can't hit the power button to turn it on so I can't check.
Needless to say, without the power button I can't get my phone back on (Unless a wizard here has an idea?), so my question is... will the files still be there and if they are, how hard does Samsung check these things for voided warranties? Anyone got any experience with their returns? The AT&T store guy says they only reject warranties for water damage, but I didn't exactly volunteer that I had flashed my own rom. If I'm likely to get a $400 hit on my cell bill, I'd rather buy a newer unlocked phone.
TLDR: warranty voiding files might still be on unbooting phone. Will Samsung care?
Do you have an att service center near you? Luckily I did and I just walked in and they checked it a bit (tested it for like 20 minutes). After a quick conversation, the actually just replaced my phone. I told them I wanted a phone with working GPS.
Now if you have to mail it in, that's maybe another story.
It will be mailed.
I assume your jig still gets you into download mode, no? If so, use heimdall/odin to flash something and set it to auto reboot. You could flash something as small as the kernel or maybe just go back to stock once again.
I also want to say that heimdall has an option to try and kick you our of the "phone --!--PC" state and when I tested it while in download mode it just rebooted the phone.
These may be a few ways for you to kick the phone on to let it boot so you can clear the internal SD.
Also, when I take out the battery, insert the USB cable and hold down both volume rockers and put the battery in, I'm kicked into download mode. Perhaps yet another way to turn your phone on?
Use your jig to get into download mode, the use the heimdall one click unbrick in this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153310
It will reboot your phone from download mode.
I'm certain the JIG would work, if the phone would power on. Without a functional power button (or a rom that auto boots when powered like CM7), I don't think I can get to DL mode.

You don't need use the power button to get into download mode. Just plug the jig in and your in download mode. also if your phone has captivate bootloaders just hold down the volume up/down buttons and plug in usb cable to a pc wait about 3 seconds and you should be in download mode, no need to touch the power button to get into download mode.
Ah, well I get no power up from JIG or USB cable hooked to PC holding vol up, vol down, neither or both. Nothing on the screen at all.

plug your phone into a wall socket to charge the battery and leave it for a while, the come back and check to see if you can feel the battery getting warm. If it does get warm try the jig again. If it doesn't get warm you may have something else wrong then just the power button.
If there is nothing else hardware wise wrong with the phone besides the power button and your boot loaders are not corrupted (and as long as nothing is wrong with your jig) the jig should put you into download mode every time.
charged phone, battery didn't warm, but area just above it did. Tried booting with JIG and USB cable and all combinations of volume buttons, to the same black screen.
Sounds like you should go ahead try with your warranty replacement.
But, if i were you i would try an going to an att store or service center, sometimes there with a hardware defect like your power button they will swap the phone right on the spot quick and easy. if not, the worst they will tell you at the store is to send it in for a warranty replacement, no harm in at least trying.
Yeah, I went to the store and best they did was watch me talk to the warranty people on the phone.
The disconcerting thing with the return is that they send me a phone, then I send them mine and if they have a problem $400 magically appears on my bill and there's nothing I can do about it.
If I can get it warrantied, great. If I can't, I'd rather spend $400 on a newer, better phone (instead of a factory refurbished version of the same phone).
I'm surprised there aren't more people with returns experience here...
I did a return for my wife's captivate at the att store. Her phone had random soft reboots. They did not even look at her phone, and just swapped it out with a new captivate.

My cappy was bricked because Odin failed while flashing the boot-loader.....so no boot-loader or anything was on there. I went into the att service center and told them I realized it was off and I couldn't get it to turn back on. Every question they asked me I just said I dunno im not sure. The guy said let me trouble shoot this to see whats wrong....lol he came back and they gave me a new one on the spot.
It seems that you really don't know whats wrong with it so there is no morality issues........IF there were any before lol.

I've had two actual experiences. The first was a soft brick. This happened before anyone really knew about how to build a JIG. This happened within the first 30 days. I was basically in your boat, I had a bunch of crap on the internal SD card and I even still had some i9000 firmware still loaded to the phone. I exchanged it last October and never had any backlash.
The second time I messed up /efs. I was able to flash it back to stock and master clear the phone to remove traces that I had done anything to the phone. This time I dealt with samsung directly. They paid shipping both ways, made sure my phone was not water damaged and actually ended up replacing the mainboard (they seem to do that to fix a ton of issues).
Both experiences I mailed in my phone. I never dealt with a local service center.
Google play, chrome, and other apps were randomly crashing one day, think it might've been related to google update. Decided to try and flash a stock image with nexus toolkit. It got to checking fastboot connectivity which failed, then I tried to turn on my phone and it won't work. Won't enter fastboot or recovery mode either. Is there anything I can do?
Your biggest mistake was in relying on Wugfresh without understanding the underlying fastboot and adb commands.
If you have no bootloader, no recovery and no OS, you have no phone. So do you have a bootloader?

I don't know what wugfresh is, is it another name for nexus toolkit?
How do I know if I have a bootloader? The phone was rooted so I believe I had an unlocked bootloader if that's what you mean.

If your phone won't power on, its probably bricked to the max. Meaning that the Google Logo does not show up.
If you charge your phone, it should be receiving power. First thing I would do is to plug your phone into a wall charger with a micro USB to see if it charges. If it charges, you can then try holding down the power button + volume down to turn on the phone and wait to see if the bootloader shows up.

Nothing happens sadly
If it isn't able to be fixed by me, could it be fixed by a phone repair specialist? And any idea what caused it to break so I don't do it again? Though I guess in general I'll just avoid rooting my device in the future.
@Firion Hope: Wugfresh is the author of the Nexus Toolkit. As you're finding out, toolkits are bad things when you don't know what you're doing. If something does go wrong, you have no frame of reference to help you fix it: no logs, no error messages, no nothing. This also means there is no way to tell what caused the problem in the first place so you can avoid it in the future.
The best way to prevent something like this from happening again is knowledge. Reading forum posts, blogs, Google's own webpages, or even watching videos of other people rooting a device will help provide some of that knowledge; the rest will come with experience. With knowledge of what you're doing, if you do decide you want to try rooting a device in the future you can be prepared to solve a problem if it occurs.
If the device cannot be revived by you, a person with the right hardware could potentially revive the device. However, the people who can do this are often sketchy types who will use that hardware to do illegal things. Thus we can't really discuss it here.

How to fix a hard brick.
What you're describing *could* be due to a ancient battery with charge issues.
Try plugging the phone into your computer's usb port to charge (at low power) for maybe an hour. Then unplug and plug in again. If the green led lights up, it's now charging the battery. Give it awhile and when you push the power button you should get the basic battery charging display. Once that happens, it should turn on.
You should now be able to charge normally.
Once you can boot normally, boot into bootloader, scroll through until you find bootloader logs then press and hold the power button until the phone reboots (~7 sec). Now fully charge the phone.
That process will buy you some time...maybe. you should get the battery replaced.

My wife Nokia 7 Plus was found in download mode (white screen with Android One logo) and is stuck in this mode. I've never done any unlock bootloader or root or anything on it (thus I did on other phones so I'm not totally stranger to it) and I'm 100% sure she didn't tried anything strange either. The phone is completely stock and probably with the last update as it went back new from repair a few months ago (for screen brightness issue) and I did update everything possible before she used it again.
The phone start automatically and immediately I see the white screen with AndroidOne logo and after a few ms it refresh and it's the same screen with the back text "Download mode" at the top.
I've tried to force shutdown and reboot by long pressing power. I cannot keep it shutdown, it goes back to Download Mode screen.
I've tried to restart start with power + vol up or power + vol down, power + vol up + vol down. Same.
I've tried to let it die on battery, charge it, and here it's a black screen with the large battery logo and a white text at the top saying: Download mode. After a few minute I try to boot and it's back to the white screen.
What can I tried next before I send it back for repair and it will be probably wiped again...
Side story, I've almost force her to switch from iPhone to Android because of price of the devices, and so far she is not converted at all with all the trouble we got with this Nokia.
As last before send to service try wipe in recovery, if not boot to recovery via buttons, try if your download mode is recognised by fastboot and reboot to recovery using: fastboot reboot AND IMMEDIATELY HOLD BUTTONS POWER and VOLUP until show "green android icon with no command

Thanks for your help, unfortunately none of this work. I've tried adb device and nothing is seen, fastboot reboot neither. I'll send it to repair now.
Suffering the same problem.

I'm having the same problem. Exactly what you said. I didn't root my device or even attempt to do anything. I bought Nokia because they were purely stock and delivered some quality mobile phones. I've got only this phone as my daily driver. So tell me if you have got the issue fixed and how much did it cost and how long it took. It's been stuck with that 'android one' logo and a small message that reads 'Download mode' on top. I've tried everything. And what I'm worried about is, my phone's out of warranty and I'm a student. I hope you got it fixed for some reasonable cost. Please reply to me ASAP.
My wife's phone also has had this exact same problem.
I have tried all the tricks mentioned above including ADB mode (it could not find the phone).
The phone is supposed to be under warranty. So I took it back to the place of purchase.
However, the phone has a tiny crack in the corner of the screen which my wife and I were not aware of. So Nokia have indicated that unless I get the crack fixed, the warranty is voided and they will not fix the boot problem.
Because the broken crack is not covered by warranty, Nokia want $270 for a new screen before they will look at the software problem caused by the pie update.
I took it to a third party repair shop to see if there is a cheaper option. They cannot fix it either.
So the 5 month old Nokia phone is now useless.
But if anyone can comes across a solution for this, can they please post it here.
Thanks.
Same here. I told the guy on the phone about the crack. But he told me it should not be a problem. Now I got an email that I needed to pay 185 euro's to repair the screen.
Because of their FW-update, my phone became unuseful.
When I get it back (not repaired) I will try a OST on it.
I solved my issue via this procedure:

I solved it via drivers: https://github.com/StollD/nokia-driver-installer/raw/master/out/Phone_Nokia_USB_Driver_v1.4.0.exe
WTF Finally I fix it!!!

My Nokia 7 Plus got stuck in download mode after accidently pressing all buttons simu
Yes I know that sounds like a weird title and maybe you are wondering why did I do that? notice the word accidently.
I was just trying to fly my newly bought drone x pro for the first time and the controller has a little pull out extendable cradle to hold the phone in
if you want to view what the FPV camera is viewing while in flight and because of the bad design with all buttons on the same side of the Nokia 7 plus, unbeknownst to me all 3 buttons were being pressed at the same time and before I knew it my phone was shutting down and rebooting to this ridiculous download mode and the rest is history!
So I just thought I would mention this to anyone who happened to or happens to land in the same situation as me to be aware that you should probably put a little bit of sponge taped to the side of your phone over the volume buttons to possibly prevent it from being pressed simultaneously when flying your fpv drone.
If all else fails you could always connect the drone to your phone and then just put your phone in your pocket and fly blind by simply walking with the drone or rather running since they are pretty nippy. I am a bit bummed as this would have been a very convenient way of checking how full my guttering is of leaves without having to climb a ladder every time to check!?
Anyway I also used the fix here: https://www.techmesto.com/possible-fix-nokia-smartphone-stuck-on-download-mode-after-ota-update/
after downloading the nokia phone drivers from github.
If you are on windows 10 pro you may get a screen protector warning not to proceed further?
Ignore it and continue installing the drivers!
So far I got the Nokia Logo back and then it just hung there for several minutes without being recognised by the pc.
So I simply disconnected the phone from the pc and suddenly got the familiar nokia tone start up but then black screen again.
I realised it had been on the download mode so long it had completely drained the battery so now I am charging it.
Fingers crossed when I power up again I will at least have my phone back, sadly minus the data. (I will of course at least have all my google notes and contacts etc backed up to google servers at least they are useful for something!!)
I can't recall the last time I used it but I am pretty sure I had the SD card set as the main download so hopefully fingers crossed that data should have remained untouched, not sure how Android sets this up anymore?
Long time since gingerbread when you could still install and run apps as a completely separate partition.
All became a bit confusing after that so rooting became something I did hesitantly and as a definite last resort!
Anyway I am rambling on. If I find the fix works I will let you know.
Thanks for reading and thanks in advance if the fix works !!:good::good:

So it worked, I have my phone back! Thank you so much for this solution!
Sadly my SD card was wiped too!!!!! super pissed off about this, many photos and notes and other files that I will never get back unless if I recall I may have made a manual backup of at least some of the earlier stuff I put on here a few months back on my pc?
Nokia will be hearing from me for sure!!!!! I want a 50% refund for messing with my life and my time. How can they send an update that essentially breaks a phone for a bit!???!!!!!!
Hi all,
First of all, I would like to say that as a new user, I am not sure if this is the right forum to post this question at. If it is not, I would be happy to be redirected to an appropriate forum.
I have a Moto 5G plus phone. About 4 months ago, my power button has died. All attempts in fixing it have failed, so I ultimately downloaded an app called "Volume unlocker" that allowed me to lock/unlock the phone using the volume buttons. This allowed me to keep using the phone for the next 4 months without a problem.
4 months later, I encountered a new problem: when I try to unlock my phone, when I enter my (correct) password, the screen goes black for about 2 seconds, and then I am asked to enter my password again, in an infinite loop. Note that if I enter a wrong password, the phone says that the password is incorrect. This happened all of the sudden, without updating anything or installing a new app. When the phone is locked, I am able to do some stuff like using the camera, activating the torch, and using the Assistant (basically, all the stuff I can usually do without unlocking the phone). If I enter the assistant, and while I am at the assistant I am trying to unlock the phone, once I enter my (correct) password the phone says "System UI has stopped".
All the solutions I found online required either restarting the phone, doing anything that requires the power button, which as previously mentioned does not work, or having debugging mode on, which unfortunately is off and it doesn't seem like I am able to turn it on without unlocking the phone. So I am stuck locked and have no idea how to fix that.
At this point, I guess that any solution that would at least let me extract my personal data e.g. personal photos would be enough for now.
I have also talked with Motorala but they were not helpful at all.
Thank you very much!
